I haven't been to see my grandparents during the summer in a while (they live in Bay Ridge, and don't have cable tv...so watching the Yankees game requires trudging to a local bar), but I used to go to the Salty Dog on nice days.  3JP is much closer, so the walk over to Salty Dog took a little encouragement from the weather.  I can't say I was ever disappointed.  The staff were great, the beer was good, and the food was really good (after aforementioned beer).  This would typically net the establishment 3 stars.  However, the ambience is awesome!! It's in an old firehouse, and there's a firetruck there; I love the feel.  In addition, on a nice day, the whole front of the restaurant being open to the street is a huge plus.

Come hop on the fire truck!

You probably shouldn't, it's the DJ booth and those guys'll throw you off. Can't go wrong here for a beer or two. Sometimes you'll catch that hot firefighter glancing over at you. I love when the firehouse doors are down in cold weather and when they're up in warm, exposing the entire bar.

It's one of the hotspots in Bay Ridge, and their food isn't bad either. However, I'm still looking for that pole ...

I really love the space in this place and it is full of fun locals mostly before say 10 O Clock. I think the food is good for bar food and even sometimes for delivery. I have tried a couple of the sandwiches and wraps with some great fries. This is not someplace I would make a regular hangout but it is fun depending on who you are with and what you are in the mood for.

    Cheers

There seems to be some skimping going on with the meals, as with the Shrimp & Scallops w/ Penne.  I was not expecting the seafood to be diced up into the penne so one wouldn't notice there wasn't much seafood given.  I don't mind paying the price but give me the real thing with whole shrimps and scallops!  As for the salad, how can you destroy a salad?  The balsamic vinaigrette is awful.  If they're going to charge restaurant prices, they'd better provide well-prepared full entrees.  One more thing, when the delivery person arrives can she please not voice my "private" tel number to the universe upon delivery?

I love the ambiance of this place- it used to be a firehouse and they turned it into a bar.  The food is GREAT if you're going mid-day or early evening for lunch or brunch.

But once the sun goes down, the vampires come out....

The people who go here are not my scene.  And the bar is HUGE and there aren't a lot of people actually manning it.  All the staff (including the "bouncers" who do nothing to stop the plentiful bar fights) are rude, inconsistent and perpetually annoyed (probably because they're overworked).

So I would say go for the good, leave for the nightlife (which is kind of a bar fail....)

Salty Dog is a bit of an enigma. On Sundays it's a great sports bar with great bar food, usually full of Giants or Jets fan watching football on their number of TV's.

Salty Dog on a Saturday afternoon is no different than it is on a Sunday, but it suddenly morphs into a club of sorts. It's as if the folks from Staten Island and maybe even Brooklyn get all dolled up/dressed up with their skin tight dresses, 4 inch heels, get their weaves in while the guys have just gotten back from a day at the beach or a fake and bake, grease up their hair for a night to try to score. There would be DJ spinning dance music while people grind with each other. Meanwhile, there are those that came in shorts or sweats because they know at heart it's not a pretentious place. But I suppose that Bay Ridge is as far as those from Staten Island can reasonably go to, Manhattan would just take too long.

As a sports bar, Salty Dog is top notch, 5 stars. As a dance club/hook-up spot, it's 2 stars so I'll split the difference and give it a 3.5.

One of my good friends loves to refer to this place as Salty Balls which should tell you all you need to know.

If I had a dollar for every time I vowed I'm never going back to Salty Dog again, well maybe I'd be able to buy Salty Dog and actually turn it into a decent bar.

Sadly since I don't get reimbursed every time I go against my better judgement, Salty Dog will have to remain the craptastic bar that it is.

There is only one reason I go here and that's for convenience. I'm a hermit crab in the winter and rarely venture outside. On the rare occasions that I do, this is where it seems my friends are always heading. I can undertstand. No one really wants to trek to Manhattan in the dead of winter, especially the winter we just had. But on more than one occasion I find myself wishing that I had just stayed home.

The actually decor of the bar is cute. I like it. But that's about as far as the positives go.

This place gets way too crowded and with all the wrong people. One time while I was waiting in the bathroom some girl first asked me if I was a cop and when I answered no with a confused look on my face she offered me some coke. This place is filled with about 70% trash and that's on a good night.

Also, the bartenders are rude and aren't consistent. My friend was ordering Heinekens the whole night and then all of a sudden they decided to up the price a dollar. Now it's only a dollar but it's more about the principle. When she said something, the bartender looked at her like she was crazy and nastily told her that this is the price and if she wants her beer she'll have to pay that price.

The last time I was here was January and I havent' been back since. Hopefully this time I can actually stick to it.

This old fire house turned bar kept true to its roots w/ fire house interior giving it a rugged look and the fire truck w/ DJ booth makes for a marquee center piece. Fairly large to accommodate a slew of people. What more can you say, It's the salty dog. Good times as well as bad. Burgers are good better then what's expected from a bar. No complaints better when it's not over packed. The DJ can be hit or miss though. Excellent for starting off a beer crawl night in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

NOTE: This review is only for the lunchtime Salty-Dog experience.

Most of the time I'd rather be shot in the face than walk into a sports bar, but I'm actually a pretty big fan of the Salty Dog's food offerings.

Now, as implied above, I don't dare to walk into the Salty Dog at night - it's just not my scene.

I will regularly drag my sister to the Salty Dog for lunch though because they do bar food pretty damn well, and the wait staff brings their A game every time.

The food is always fresh and tasty, and there's a pretty big variety of stuff to choose from, even for people who aren't looking to maximize their intake of sodium and saturated fat.

The salads are surprisingly good, especially the spinach and cobb options. I also recommend the Fire-House Fettuccine, the steak sandwich, the BBQ chicken sandwich, and of course, the combo appetizer sampler.

The burgers are also pretty decent, but if I was in the mood for one, I'd rather head for the Burger Bistro just a few blocks down on 75th Street.

Again, I'll never head to the Salty Dog at night to drink, but it's a damn fine place for a bar-food lunch.

I had such an amazing time at this place. I've only been once, but it was a blast. I went just for the club part of it, so I can't comment on the food. The drinks are priced decently and the music is great.

One thing I don't like is that you have to spend $20 bucks to use your card. I was worried about bring drunk and forgetting my card, and ended up doing three $20+ transactions.

Can't wait to go back to NYC and tear it up at this place!

Can no longer patronize them since I've moved closer and realized what crappy neighbors they are by leaving the garage door open late at night (after 11) while the DJ is blasting away and the dogs are outside smoking and howling.  You can hear the music almost 1 avenue away and it's not just weekends -- they do this on Wed and Thurs. night as well.  Nice job keeping your neighbors awake, lowering their property value, and making it hard for your fellow business owners to rent their upstairs apartments.

Let me start by saying they call this the "firehouse bar", but most firemen hate it. Also, there isn't a weekend that goes by without someone saying, "did you hear about the fight at salty?"
The food is decent, and they have a good selection on tap.
The thing that I most dislike about this bar is their dress code. This bar puts off an image where they want their patrons to be working class people who want to come in and watch the Giants game, and hang out with some friends. They claim to be a sports bar. Yet, They do not allow baseball caps to be worn, and jerseys of any kind are not allowed. Now what kind of sports bar is going to turn away patrons that want to watch the game because they have their team's jersey on???
I gave this bar 3 stars, mainly because of their food and drink selection.

Listen, I'm a little biased towards this place. I really want to like it. The house does a good job providing a solid choice of beer on tap, bottles, drinks and generally ok bar food. As a restaurant, it fulfills its purpose. It's not amazing but it's very edible. The problem is the crowd that this place attracts after dark.
It's not a firemans' bar. I'm 5th generation Irish Catholic NYer (half anyway) and I have more FDNY on my family tree than I can count, I can attest to this. This place attracts young municipal workers, especially cops, neighborhood vinny and tony types with identical shape-ups and White Nikes and local women that love that. You know the type. Long acrylic nails and crazy thick accents, reeking of Newports and low self-worth. Not my place. It's just that, well, these guys generally aren't the best of character. Cops will rape you or steal from you or shoot you, and firemen come through with the ambulance and try to pick up the pieces and salvage what's left.

I visited The Friends in Brooklyn for about a week and they recommended The Salty Dog because its close to their crib.

    Pros:
    -The firehouse decor
    -The HDTVs scattered about
    -Cleanliness
-The hella big booths in the back.

    Cons:
-The food could be bettter, but hell its a bar or is it?
-The scene on Fridays.  The music was a bit too loud, but I woulda felt better about this if I was in a better mood.

Ahhh... I miss the days when Salty Dog was a hot Bay Ridge pub to pick up even hotter VERY friendly women. They boasted good DJs and many familiary faces.

Fast forward to 2002 til now:
Firemen, cops, and teenage girls get together to dance to shitty music, with an atmosphere that screams, "YO WTF ARE YOU LOOKIN AT? GOT A PROBLEM, BRO?!"

Asshole guidos, lots of fights, and statuatory rape waiting to happen.  Get me the fuck out of here!

Quick aside - My friends use this place as the joke to piss me off when they suggest plans.

I don't care what my roommate's girlfriend's sister said: I like this place. If you're looking for a Manhattan type bar with a hip crowd, DON'T go here. If you're looking for half a firetruck just in the bar with hilarious cover bands and lots of shaved heads, GO here.

I counted 8 shaved heads at once. It was amazing. For me it was just a fascinating departure from the normal manhattan and even brooklyn crowds. Its just so bay ridge, with a good contingent from Long Island probably as well. they probably haven't seen an asian there in 4 years, so I fit the quota for the decade. Anywho, the cover band playing that night technically sounded right, but they were a cover band, Bon Jovi was their hero. I was in awe.

I'm definitely going back, because hey its close enough and no place else in southwest brooklyn is going to have that many people boozing it up on a wednesday or thursday. Even though I didn't really fit in with the crowd, its the kind of place where if you drink long enough you'll find that everyone is just trying to have a good time, and eventually even the bartender stopped giving me this stern look like I just messed with his daughter. I'd suggest, if you ever go, wearing a small gold necklace, a wifebeater, or a buttoned down shirt with white sneaks and jeans. Or maybe shaving your head.

The first thing I noticed about the Salty is its lack of a door. It's open in the front, garage style, and so when you are inside, you don't feel trapped in a cramped bar. This setup enabled me to enjoy my cigarettes more in between the drinking, too, since with one step i could just venture outside.

Flat screens showing different baseball games all at once cover the walls, and there is a good variety of music, too. Last night the DJ was feeling the 80s, my favorites, and so he played a lot of this type of music. The drinks are great, and the atmosphere is pretty chill.

I went on a Wednesday, though, and even though it was Karaoke night, during which only one person sang and she did a pretty good job, too, there was a sober atmosphere and a good amount of people, although not as many as there are on Fridays. Apparently, on Fridays the section where they had tables last night, becomes a big dance floor. That should be fun!

Overall, I'd say my time and money in Salty Dog was well spent, but it would have been more fun if the guy I was with had made the date as fun as the first one, not like this...the worst one of my life. :(

OK, close your eyes, imagine listening to the sounds of the BEP "The Time.Dirty Bit" blasting outside this firehouse facade locale. Then as you walk in a bald headed man asks for your ID, greets you by your last name and tells you to check your coat and remove your hat. Cool. Not bad at all. But after listening to the horrors portrayed by the media about this place, I was a bit concerned about my safety. But boy, was I wrong, that is why you can't believe the media, is an all out fear fest to boost ratings. But enough about that, guidettes everywhere, from sober to sloppy, they were all out, most of them single, oh and yeah, there were also fellas for the ladies.
Salty's has a vintage firetruck in the premise,I think that's where the DJ was situated. The drinks were bold, and the bartenders were very attentive and showed urgency, they get brownie points for that. I can't comment on the food, and I personally don't remember any flatscreen TV's, cause that wasn't my main concern,if you know what I mean. Anyway, Salty Dog is amazing, the music was proper, the drinks were legit, and the crowd was cool. And you're guaranteed to get your groove on. I got nothing but love for this place!

There is Way too much testosterone in this bar.

My friend almost got into a fight within 2 minutes of walking in. We were making a bee line for the bar, and walked through a gap between a small group of people.
This guy bumps my friend, " Hey bro, whad are you doin?"
We look at him confused. He starts up again,
"I'm having words with my lady here."
We nod and "yeah, no problem" our way to another spot.

The service is good here. During the dinner rush there are a ton of people on the floor. Skip the food, unless are you game for average pub food, Stick to the drinks.

This is THE local bar where the drunks looking to hook up converge around 1am. There's always a crowd, and a fight waiting to happen.

FML I'm a regular here?!? Wow okay - so I'm a glutton for self punishment and was convinced to come here pre-bar hours AGAIN for dinner with my Beau and his friend.  I was sworn to that the burgers were killer despite my non favorite liking for this place - I opted for the BBQ boneless ribs sandwich because I love ribs ::licks fingers in hopes of remaining BBQ traces::

The service was not 100% up to par since we had to find someone to give us water, but the sandwich was delicious!  Totally would get it again.  The appetizer sampler was also a nice dish to get too with nice variety.

Don't worry - I was well outta here before the Kearney and Xaverian crew came to downgrade this place with underage children; go home and play a board game.

What a cute firehouse bar with some damn good bar food to go along with the open atmosphere.  They are always busy and you will really enjoy this sports bar with a lot of TV's which make it a lot of fun and a good place to go.  The wings were pretty good, a lot better than the Kettle Black which is down the street and I heard the other eats are not too shabby.

I have only been here once, but after this review I'm feeling a little thirsty.

My 2 friends and I went there on a Saturday night - it was a dizzying panoply of girls with big hair and white gym sneakers, dudes with spiked hair, and tons of people desperate to get laid.  You could feel the neediness in the air.  Not being of the AYYYYYYY inclination, and not looking to sleep with anyone there, we left after about 20 minutes.  Yuck.

On other nights, this place isn't awful for food.  I wouldn't jump up and down recommending it, but the back room has tvs and is quieter than the main bar.  The main bar has an eating area in the back too.  But the service is slow as hell and the food is pretty bland.  For GOOD pub food and slow service, go to Kettle Black.

PATHETIC bouncers. Asked every guy to check their coats... ok fine. but then to check your SWEATER or SWEATSHIRT? ridiculous. On top of it, as I went back to complain again- the bouncer (bald guy) told someone if you don't wanna check it then just give me $10!!! Seriously ridiculous for bay ridge and most definitely for Salty. This place has a reputation to uphold and greedy bouncers have ruined it. Last I checked it was Bay Ridge, not Manhattan - and normal places wouldn't want guys walking around in white t-shirts... but they were trying to rack up the coat check $. HORRIBLE experience, I'm from the neighborhood and just moved Salty to the bottom of the list of places to go on a Saturday night.

This place is so freakin cool. If I drank this would totally be my "spot". Its an old firehouse turned bar. Theres an old school fire engine just sitting in the middle of the bar. Flat screens to watch the game. Karaoke nights. Its so clean and the door....is the giant garage door when the trucks used to pull into. In the winter they have a "regular" (aka no fun) door to enter and exit.
I need drinking friends just so I can hang out here and not feel weird about ordering soda. haha. Any takers!?

Aside from the old school fire engine inside the bar, aside from the muti screens they have around showing all the sports you could want to see, aside from the many cool beers they have on tap, aside from the pretty good bar food they serve up, aside from the giant front door that could actually fit a real fire engine through it, aside from the long bar and seating in the back, aside from the friendly bartenders, I have to say that this place is awesome because FIREMEN hang out here. I will be going back to this place many, many times....

No bike racks in the area, but plenty of poles to chain up to.

You must take into account that Salty Dog is a Bar/Grill.

As far as the restaurant goes, they are open 11am-10:45pm 7 days a week and deliveries 5-10:30 everyday.  Happy Hour with free buffet at the bar M-F. It's a great place to have lunch or dinner AND to go watch your favorite team. You're welcome to wear your teams jersey or baseball hat.  Sundays they have a special Brunch Menu, served until 4pm.

The waitstaff is friendly, attentive and all have been working there for quite some time.  There are lunch an dinner specials everyday.  I recommend asking them, what they like best on or off the menu - you'll be surprised with what they come up with and suggest.  If the dinning room is crazy CRAZY busy, I would not recommend keeping too much of the servers time.

There are only 16 tables (two booths that hold 6 people), if you're a group of 6 or more, I would suggest calling ahead, a day or even 2 hours so the Hostess can better accommodate you, or if there are special needs, wheel chairs or high chairs etc.

The restaurant is kid/family friendly, but I strongly urge you to pay attention if there is a 'big' sports game on (playoffs, football etc).  If a grown man decides to curse at the game and he's by the bar or if it's too loud/rowdy for your dining experience, then you may want to rethink going there with your young children or grandmother.

The bartenders, when not slammed with a crazy amount of customers, are genuinely kind and interested in speaking with their patrons.  When the bar tender doesn't have a million people to take care of, ask him to make you his favorite mixed drink or whatever his specialty is.

Taps: Amstel Light, Bud Light, Heineken, Bass, Sam, Sam Seasonal, Sierra Nevada, Salty Dog Lager, Cider, Stella, Blue Moon, Guiness, Sam Cherry, Harvest Moon

Bottle: Bud, Bud Lite, Coors Lite, Amstel Lite, Heineken, Heineken Lite, Corona, Corona Lite, Rolling Rock, MGD 64, Mich Ultra

    Wine: Red, White and Zinfandel

Then there is Salty Dog after 11pm, when it becomes more of a 'club'.  The bouncers will ID you, you have to be 21+ to enter.  Coat Check is $2 in the cooler weather, $5 to check it and take it back out to smoke and give it back to the coat check person.  Jerseys, Hats and Muscle shirts/Ginny T's are not allowed in once the restaurant is closed and it's a "Club" (Wed-Sat night).  **Actually, no man (not matter how fit) should go out to dinner in a ginny t/muscle shirt  - save that for your own home.

Overall, great dining atmosphere before 11pm, great food, people, and service.  After 11pm, it is loud, busy, crowded, and filled with men.  Great music by the DJ.  Jello shots in the back on the dance floor.  Busiest time on Fri/Sat is between 12am-3am.

My saying in life, is that "Nothing good happens after 2am" no matter where you are or what bar you're at.

This was one of my go-to spots when I lived in Dyker Heights for about 18 months.  The food was reliable, fairly cheap drinks, and there was always a good crowd for dinner or on a Friday or Saturday night.  The music was good too, for a night out, and it wasn't far my house so I didn't have to worry about going into Manhattan and then waiting for a train or paying $50 for a cab.

Don't get me wrong, the food isn't gourmet cuisine, but it was decent pub grub.  The burgers were really really good.  And the people were friendly.  Good times.  And the fire engine inside (this is an old firehouse) was entertaining.

The setup is really good for watching the NFL. Plenty of space in the bar area so you aren't knocking into people's drinks. And then a pretty large seated area to get food with flatscreen TVs everywhere. The food was just OK, but the servers stayed on top of things and took good care of me. I think I'll be back Sunday afternoons the rest of the season!

There is no question that on certain nights, some real yo-yo's hang out here. As long as you eat here early and not on Saturdays, the Dog is great.  The wait staff is friendly and the food is pretty tasty and consistent. Standard pub fare. They get an extra star from me because last year I threw a surprise birthday party there for my husband and they did a great job.

GREAT football bar .. decent on the weekends too!

My time in Bay Ridge was short lived .. but during my tenure I spent my Sundays @ the Salty Dog.

I loved the decor, the firetruck and the people. I ate here once and the food was typical bar fare .. nothing to write home about.

During football games the place was packed and the seating was limited but it did provide for some great people watching and the drink specials were good too.

If you are looking for a fun, relaxed neighborhood bar .. this is the place to try out.

I've been here on a Saturday night for dancing before and I had a great time. I went in last night after bar hopping because I was hungry. The bartender was not 100%, it took him a while to even realize we were there and the place was not very busy at all. My friend and I both ordered a burger and fries. The burger was perfectly cooked and absolutely scrumptious, as were the fries. I would totally eat there again and I do enjoy the great music on Saturday nights. Not a bad place, I'm a fan!

I've went to the Salty Dog for about ten years.. and I never knew it was a restaurant...

Let me explain why I gave it 3 stars...
    1. I love when vehicles are indoors, hence the half of firetruck that is inside.
    2. This is the only establishment worth going AFTER 2am in all of Brooklyn, it is either Salty Dog or to the diner of course...
    3. Bartenders are generous, with buybacks of course...
    4. The place is good for great laughs, u will laugh at the younger crowd get wasted, dance, fall, embarrass themselves...
    5. The bar makes u feel like you're suddenly on the Jersey Shore, the amount of spikey hairs, over sized chains, men with perfectly thin waxed eyebrows, you get the idea...
    6. Firefighters or at least guys who are pretending to be firefighters, well done boys now this is a good idea and a way to get those easily impressed girls...
    7. No complaints about the drinks...
    8. The big open door to see in, if it's a dead night this open door saved you time finding a parking spot and walking in only to find two big Irish drunks standing and waiting to hit on you...
    9. The reason I gave it the 3rd star, dress down baby! You cannot come here dressed up, it is almost frowned upon... ahh finally I can wear sneakers and have some dance battles!! :)

So all in all, avoid the bathrooms, they get crowded and crazy... be ready to see people you used to go to school with or have seen on facebook lately, if guidos irritate you do not go here, go to enjoy the game, TVs are all over (HUGE crowds for big events though like World Series, etc.) and finally a nice even mix of girls and men, no sausage party here fellas!!

This bar should be renamed to the THE CIVIL SERVANT, because its essentially a short summation of the crowd you'll find here. Its for all the schelps who never made it out of Brooklyn and never will! That being said, I ll cut this place a small break and say it isn't completely awful and there is a garden variety of sluts you can meet up with, but don't be fooled, you may want to make sure you are up to schedule on your hepatits vaccinations and that you check for some ID b4 you touch anything you meet here. Never ate the food here, never came here during the day, and if I ever did do either I would most likely jump of the VZ bridge. The fact that this place demands you use the coat check is also laughable.

Untz untz untz untz. Came in during the summer when we were in the neighborhood. Lots of cavorting white canvas belts and white sneakers.

"Oh my God! I think I went to high school with that girl! And that guy..and that."

"Wanna go somewhere else and smoke Hookah?"

    "Okay."

    Untz untz untz untz untz..
