Review Highlights
Loved the giant garage door that was wide open, which displayed the festive Christmas decorations and fire truck. Was a nice atmosphere and the beer selection was great.
The music totally sucked though. I'm not a fan of all the generic shit that is played on the radio, which is also played at this place. Plus it was way too loud.
I visited The Friends in Brooklyn for about a week and they recommended The Salty Dog because its close to their crib.
Pros:
-The firehouse decor
-The HDTVs scattered about
-Cleanliness
-The hella big booths in the back.
Cons:
-The food could be bettter, but hell its a bar or is it?
-The scene on Fridays. The music was a bit too loud, but I woulda felt better about this if I was in a better mood.
I've went to the Salty Dog for about ten years.. and I never knew it was a restaurant...
Let me explain why I gave it 3 stars...
1. I love when vehicles are indoors, hence the half of firetruck that is inside.
2. This is the only establishment worth going AFTER 2am in all of Brooklyn, it is either Salty Dog or to the diner of course...
3. Bartenders are generous, with buybacks of course...
4. The place is good for great laughs, u will laugh at the younger crowd get wasted, dance, fall, embarrass themselves...
5. The bar makes u feel like you're suddenly on the Jersey Shore, the amount of spikey hairs, over sized chains, men with perfectly thin waxed eyebrows, you get the idea...
6. Firefighters or at least guys who are pretending to be firefighters, well done boys now this is a good idea and a way to get those easily impressed girls...
7. No complaints about the drinks...
8. The big open door to see in, if it's a dead night this open door saved you time finding a parking spot and walking in only to find two big Irish drunks standing and waiting to hit on you...
9. The reason I gave it the 3rd star, dress down baby! You cannot come here dressed up, it is almost frowned upon... ahh finally I can wear sneakers and have some dance battles!! :)
So all in all, avoid the bathrooms, they get crowded and crazy... be ready to see people you used to go to school with or have seen on facebook lately, if guidos irritate you do not go here, go to enjoy the game, TVs are all over (HUGE crowds for big events though like World Series, etc.) and finally a nice even mix of girls and men, no sausage party here fellas!!
Ok this is a bar, not a lounge( you sissies), not a club (you hussies) but a bar. A fun bar to come watch the game, drink a guiness and enjoy the crowd. Food is so-so, but the bartenders are friendly as are the people who hang out there. Of course, I would only go to see a game, the ambiance changes once the sun goes down and the music goes up.
was at the bar with my family for game 5 of the yankess series with the angels;my son who is 9 yr's old and a big yankee fan;had a great time watching the game on all the four screens;the pictures they have on the walls are great;good place to bring kid's to watch the game's
Untz untz untz untz. Came in during the summer when we were in the neighborhood. Lots of cavorting white canvas belts and white sneakers.
"Oh my God! I think I went to high school with that girl! And that guy..and that."
"Wanna go somewhere else and smoke Hookah?"
"Okay."
Untz untz untz untz untz..
GREAT football bar .. decent on the weekends too!
My time in Bay Ridge was short lived .. but during my tenure I spent my Sundays @ the Salty Dog.
I loved the decor, the firetruck and the people. I ate here once and the food was typical bar fare .. nothing to write home about.
During football games the place was packed and the seating was limited but it did provide for some great people watching and the drink specials were good too.
If you are looking for a fun, relaxed neighborhood bar .. this is the place to try out.
There is Way too much testosterone in this bar.
My friend almost got into a fight within 2 minutes of walking in. We were making a bee line for the bar, and walked through a gap between a small group of people.
This guy bumps my friend, " Hey bro, whad are you doin?"
We look at him confused. He starts up again,
"I'm having words with my lady here."
We nod and "yeah, no problem" our way to another spot.
The service is good here. During the dinner rush there are a ton of people on the floor. Skip the food, unless are you game for average pub food, Stick to the drinks.
This is THE local bar where the drunks looking to hook up converge around 1am. There's always a crowd, and a fight waiting to happen.
This bar should be renamed to the THE CIVIL SERVANT, because its essentially a short summation of the crowd you'll find here. Its for all the schelps who never made it out of Brooklyn and never will! That being said, I ll cut this place a small break and say it isn't completely awful and there is a garden variety of sluts you can meet up with, but don't be fooled, you may want to make sure you are up to schedule on your hepatits vaccinations and that you check for some ID b4 you touch anything you meet here. Never ate the food here, never came here during the day, and if I ever did do either I would most likely jump of the VZ bridge. The fact that this place demands you use the coat check is also laughable.
I loved this place. Some of my colleagues and i grabbed some food and drinks here after work last Friday. The staff was very friendly and the drinks and food were great. I am new to Brooklyn so it was great to find a fun local hang out. They have a lot of different kinds of beers on tap. I will definitely be coming back here.
Aside from the old school fire engine inside the bar, aside from the muti screens they have around showing all the sports you could want to see, aside from the many cool beers they have on tap, aside from the pretty good bar food they serve up, aside from the giant front door that could actually fit a real fire engine through it, aside from the long bar and seating in the back, aside from the friendly bartenders, I have to say that this place is awesome because FIREMEN hang out here. I will be going back to this place many, many times....
No bike racks in the area, but plenty of poles to chain up to.
cool bar
What a cute firehouse bar with some damn good bar food to go along with the open atmosphere. They are always busy and you will really enjoy this sports bar with a lot of TV's which make it a lot of fun and a good place to go. The wings were pretty good, a lot better than the Kettle Black which is down the street and I heard the other eats are not too shabby.
I have only been here once, but after this review I'm feeling a little thirsty.
:)
It's always hopping, always packed, firehouse theme, good looking professional crowd, and karaoke... recipe for fun fun fun! Haven't eaten here, but the drinks are a plenty, they've got a variety of beers on tap, and large screens for the games.
My 2 friends and I went there on a Saturday night - it was a dizzying panoply of girls with big hair and white gym sneakers, dudes with spiked hair, and tons of people desperate to get laid. You could feel the neediness in the air. Not being of the AYYYYYYY inclination, and not looking to sleep with anyone there, we left after about 20 minutes. Yuck.
On other nights, this place isn't awful for food. I wouldn't jump up and down recommending it, but the back room has tvs and is quieter than the main bar. The main bar has an eating area in the back too. But the service is slow as hell and the food is pretty bland. For GOOD pub food and slow service, go to Kettle Black.
Ahhh... I miss the days when Salty Dog was a hot Bay Ridge pub to pick up even hotter VERY friendly women. They boasted good DJs and many familiary faces.
Fast forward to 2002 til now:
Firemen, cops, and teenage girls get together to dance to shitty music, with an atmosphere that screams, "YO WTF ARE YOU LOOKIN AT? GOT A PROBLEM, BRO?!"
Asshole guidos, lots of fights, and statuatory rape waiting to happen. Get me the fuck out of here!
Quick aside - My friends use this place as the joke to piss me off when they suggest plans.
The first thing I noticed about the Salty is its lack of a door. It's open in the front, garage style, and so when you are inside, you don't feel trapped in a cramped bar. This setup enabled me to enjoy my cigarettes more in between the drinking, too, since with one step i could just venture outside.
Flat screens showing different baseball games all at once cover the walls, and there is a good variety of music, too. Last night the DJ was feeling the 80s, my favorites, and so he played a lot of this type of music. The drinks are great, and the atmosphere is pretty chill.
I went on a Wednesday, though, and even though it was Karaoke night, during which only one person sang and she did a pretty good job, too, there was a sober atmosphere and a good amount of people, although not as many as there are on Fridays. Apparently, on Fridays the section where they had tables last night, becomes a big dance floor. That should be fun!
Overall, I'd say my time and money in Salty Dog was well spent, but it would have been more fun if the guy I was with had made the date as fun as the first one, not like this...the worst one of my life. :(
I don't care what my roommate's girlfriend's sister said: I like this place. If you're looking for a Manhattan type bar with a hip crowd, DON'T go here. If you're looking for half a firetruck just in the bar with hilarious cover bands and lots of shaved heads, GO here.
I counted 8 shaved heads at once. It was amazing. For me it was just a fascinating departure from the normal manhattan and even brooklyn crowds. Its just so bay ridge, with a good contingent from Long Island probably as well. they probably haven't seen an asian there in 4 years, so I fit the quota for the decade. Anywho, the cover band playing that night technically sounded right, but they were a cover band, Bon Jovi was their hero. I was in awe.
I'm definitely going back, because hey its close enough and no place else in southwest brooklyn is going to have that many people boozing it up on a wednesday or thursday. Even though I didn't really fit in with the crowd, its the kind of place where if you drink long enough you'll find that everyone is just trying to have a good time, and eventually even the bartender stopped giving me this stern look like I just messed with his daughter. I'd suggest, if you ever go, wearing a small gold necklace, a wifebeater, or a buttoned down shirt with white sneaks and jeans. Or maybe shaving your head.
This is one of the most crowded places in the neighborhood on a late night. The drinks are good and cheap. Don't come here for a martini though, this is a fireman's bar. Order a beer and dance!
This place is so freakin cool. If I drank this would totally be my "spot". Its an old firehouse turned bar. Theres an old school fire engine just sitting in the middle of the bar. Flat screens to watch the game. Karaoke nights. Its so clean and the door....is the giant garage door when the trucks used to pull into. In the winter they have a "regular" (aka no fun) door to enter and exit.
I need drinking friends just so I can hang out here and not feel weird about ordering soda. haha. Any takers!?
The food is good here as for the nightlife.... well if you ask anyone who lives in the neighborhood "hey lets go to Salty!" they will more than likely roll their eyes and tell you no thanks. Its a good place to go watch sports (esp if you are a yankee fan) and to meet up with friends. But if you like to watch cheesy guys and girls dance and be in a mist of tacky foam falling from the ceiling then this place is for you too. I haven't been here in years because of this and secondly because im a Mets fan.
As an old married man I wasn't there to pick up women but if memory serves that was a fun thing to do. I went there off hours by myself. Reuben sandwich was OK; fries were undercooked for my taste; tossed salad was fresh and beer was cold.
Certainly alot better than Skinflints which my wife and I hated.
THis place is ok if you are in the FDNY. There are so many other bars/pubs on 3rd avenue that have a much more relaxeed vibe. I swear you feel that a fight is going to break out any minute you are there. I will give the bartenders props for knowing what a Shandy was and they had it on tap for the mrs. so that is the only saving grace.
YUMMY penne and chicken ala vodka!!! The best I have ever had! Delivery is QUicK and perfect every time!
Fun bar to hang with friends on a weekend in Bay Ridge. Attentive bar tenders and a wide variety of tap beers. Fully stocked bard with all the goodies like whiskey and vodka. They do have a great feature in the spring and summer which is since this used to be a firehouse they have firehouse doors that used to open for the trucks. On a nice day or night they open them up and it makes for an interesting scene to walk off the street and right into the bar. The firetruck inside is a nice touch since this really is a fireman's hang out.
Hot Brooklyn firemen everywhere! What's not to like?
Has pretty good food, but its a little chaotic if you just want to go there for dinner. The staff is is pleasant and very attentive. The best part is the mass amount of firefighters that actually eat there. They are the only reason I would consider going back.
Great place to have a good time with friends, and have good pub food. Summer time is great to have a drink and watch some baseball.
salty what? its a bar? its a restaurant?
ooo how brooklyn...tits and ass, spikey hair, baseball hats, hoops and bling ...with golf on the flat screens?!?!?
Where am I...somewhere where brooklyn, manhattan, and staten island vibes seem to blend together and create a who gives a fuck ...ye theres no door and we got our own firetruck style bar/street corner (since the lack of door makes there no distinction between the two) in the middle of bay ridge of course.
come for the bar or come for the block party
This spot is ok if you are looking for a good place in Bay Ridge. A lot of old friends show up here to just drink and have a good time. Not so many good looking people show up here though. Place is harmless with people just wanting to meet each other and hang out. Dance floor is a joke though, its usually 3 girls in the middle of a circle made up of dudes with bad hair and track suits.
Once upon a time I spent my wknds here and danced my ass off with friends and strangers alike. The vibe is mixed since many people come from all over to check out the scene. You get the beautiful people and the wannabes, but mostly, you'll find people looking to have a good time. Nowadays, I come here to catch a Yankee Game and to enjoy food and drink with good friends. Their food is great and their drinks are plentiful and cheap. This is by far one of my fave. places to order food and their delivery service is fast so the food arrives hot. They also have a private party room for events at reasonable rates. Two thumbs up for the Dawg!
I've always loved the layout of the bar. Cmon a bar designed like a firehouse, how cool is that? The coolest part is the beer tap designed like a fire hydrant. Now the crowd that hangs out here on Friday and Saturday night isn't so cool. Though I must admit it's cool to come here once in awhile just to laugh at the guidos.
This is a pretty good neighborhood bar depending on what you are looking for in a bar. I like this spot for good beer on tap and good bar food too. The sandwiches and burgers are great and perfectly paired with a friendly staff and awesome music. I've been many times right after work and this scene is a little better than the Saturday late night desparate single scene.
Place was an utter sausagefest on Saturday. Good if you're into hair gel and wifebeaters, pretty lacking otherwise. However, the bartenders were fast and attentive even with the hundreds of identical guidos vying for their attention, plus they kept hooking me up with free rounds which is OK in my book. Fri/Sat before 10 and any other night I really enjoy it. The food is pretty good too.
