My husband took me here to celebrate my birthday a few weeks ago (March 4th).  It's a lovely place with a romantic atmosphere.  The decor has sort of a rustic "country European" style to it, though I found the wall decor to be a little mish moshed (large tapestries were hung on the wall with randomly placed, too small b&w photographs in between...it just didn't mesh very well).

They had a very nice selection of wines.  the food was excellent - portions were just right (if you are a quality over quantity person) and everything was delicious!  I had the leek risotto for an appetizer and the saffron poached atlantic halibut for my main course.  My husband had the baby spinach salad and a pork dish that I believe was a special or something seasonal.   His dish came with these amazing spicy crawfish mashed potatoes.  We ended our meals with apple cranberry crumble for me and the chocolate cubed for him.  I have to agree with Nicole M's review about the desserts - they were huge compared to the main course!

The service was good as well.  The staff was friendly and accomodating.  This restaurant is definitely worth checking out - in fact, it's the only one of it's kind in Riverdale.  It's the next best thing to upscale Manhattan dining.  We're looking forward to going back when the weather warms up and we can enjoy dinner outside in their lovely garden!

The Riverdale Garden has a pleasantly quirky, but modest atmosphere. When the weather is nice you can sit outside on the porch or in the garden with a view that overlooks the 1 train (love trains).

The food is exceptionally fresh and everything we ate had a clean edge to it. It's one of those rare places where you can eat something decadent, yet not feel like you overdid it later. The vegetables are often grilled and crisp. If you are in the mood for fish or game, this is a great place. I also recommend their beets and goat cheese salad - mmmm.

The only downfall is that Riverdale Gardens is not cheap. An average entree runs about $15 - $30. They have free valet parking and if you are a little patient you can find a spot in the Manhattan College area.

UPDATE: My fiance went here tonight (10.14), to celebrate our pre-anniversary. (We're getting here married here a year from today!) They've introduced their Fall menu and man, oh, man---is it good! We started off with a creamy veggie soup, garnished with a dollop of ricotta and roasted pumpkin seeds. I got the chicken breast, with wilted chard and roasted figs. The chicken was moist and cooked to perfection. The figs were carmelized and sweet. Yum. My fiance got the pheasant, on Chef Michael's recommendation. He loved it, said it was juicy, flavorful and rich, and didn't taste gamey at all. It came with a side of rice with peas and brussell sprouts, which was a perfect complement. We finished off with dessert, of course. I got one of my two usuals--molten chocolate with mint ice cream (though he doesn't like the mint ice cream--says its "too minty". It is definitely fresh mint!) They had a new dessert on the menu, which my fiance tried, called Beerscream. It was a sampler of four ice cream flavors--oatmeal stout, raspberry lambic with white chocolate, peach lambic and porter chocolate. The raspberry lambic was definintely his favorite, though all four flavors were good.
I'm telling you...this place is worth the schlep and the money. Try it...you won't be sorry.

I love this restaurant. Their brunch is a favorite--try the poached eggs over wilted greens, with creamy grits and homemade chicken sausage.

The desserts are out of this world...I can't even begin to describe it. All the desserts are made by the owner's wife. My boyfriend's favorite is the Chocolate Three Ways--white chocolate ice cream, chocolate mousse and chocolate cake. Mine is a toss-up between the molten chocolate cake and the cheesecake with passionfruit sauce.

We went there on Valentine's Day and this is where it loses a star. The food and wine were great, of course, but portions were way too small for the price we paid.

Nice romantic setting (although most of the decor is hit and miss) complete with garden in back. Set up to be upscale, but the service is really lacking. Slow beyond slow. The food is good, but upscale translates into very small portions (except some of the fish dishes). The desserts are huge and decadent though (the running joke was that they were twice the size of the entrees). You can bring your own wine, but be prepared for a $15/bottle corking fee.

Ate here in Feb of 2007 for brunch. Pancakes were dry. Cocktails were overpriced. Service was lacking. No thanks, won't be back.
