3 reviews for The Republican
This is a pretty happenin' place for the grounded locals of snowy salt lake. i relish coming here every time i visit my dear friends. it's an unassuming bar, quite large on the inside. it kind of remind's me of the fonz's garage in "Happy Days". the place is quite awesome in accommodating very large parties, as they allowed my friend to reserve a table for about 20 guests (they even put a little sign on the table).
the people here are delightfully surly, and will let you know if you're an obnoxious a$$hole. but if you're cool with them, they warm up to you and give you the best service.
this is definitely one of those bars where everyone will remember your name if you're a regular. and on sunday nights, they have the best live music with a band that's been playing for awhile. it's all classic country, and the singer has the greatest voice i've heard for it since johnny cash. seriously.
drinks are stupid cheap, especially coming from california. i think i paid $7 for a pint of beer and a shot of jameson.
Shuffleboard+Foosball+Pool Tables+Irish Dive Bar = Best Dive in Salt Lake City
Words cannot express my love for this pub. I come here every time I'm in town to catch up with my local friends. It's unassuming, low key and inexpensive.
This is an Irish-style pub owned and run by the Irish-American fellow who sits an the end of the bar in a newsboy hat. This is as local as the Salt Lake City scene gets and encompasses what many of the counter-culture and rebellious locals are all about. Most of the patrons are regulars and the bartenders, bouncers and even the owner know them by name and greet them with a smile. But don't let that intimidate you--say hi and get to know them.
They don't mix cocktails so don't bother asking. The only speciality shot they serve is a "muttled protestant" which you should do yourself a favor and order a round of for your boys. Other than that, beer is the drink of the day. Pickled Eggs are the only food served, but we've had pizza delivered and sat and ate while watching the soccer game (which is referred to as "football"). The TV's are always set to either soccer or rugby.
While it's not uncommon for the occasional bagpiper to show up and start playing, the rest of the night the juke-box plays The Street Dogs, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphies, Black Flag and a slew of local groups. Often times the bartender will throw on his iPod and introduce you to something you've never heard before or an old classic you forgot about.
The cliental is mid-twenties and up, though the occasional college kids will meander in and out. A group of supporters (The Rogue Cavaliers Brigade) for Real Salt Lake -- the local soccer team-- makes their home here at the Republican so game-nights bring a high-energy and fun crowd of vivacious and loyal fans.
