I've moved 5 times since I got to NYC and was expecting more from the rental broker that was assigned to us. I'd describe him as a sluggish bad listener that didn't seem to connect with what I wanted in an apartment. Even when showing places a little outside of my set budget I was thoroughly disappointed.
I know all brokers see renters as a commodity that provide a commission but for the love of all things - AT LEAST WORK FOR IT! He was very upset when I found a no-fee rental on my own using one of those paid listings sites but to hell with him! I have my new place, larger than anything he dug up, and for no fee!

as someone who's desperately trying to find housing on the island, i really, really appreciate the real estate group's manhattan rental market report (http://www.tregny.com/...) for its information on average rental prices in the city. it's given me a very realistic (if not harsh...very harsh...those apartments are expensive, man) portrait of what rental prices are on a monthly basis, which is incredibly useful.
anyway, i'm still looking, but i feel better equipped to face the manhattan rental market with this helpful little tool from the real estate group and, for that, i have to thank them :)
