Awesome. Reasonable rates and top of the line service. The owner, Maria, REALLY loves cats and will work hard to make sure yours is well taken care of (and sometimes overfed... but hey, it's a vacation for you and for your cat, right?). Book early for the holidays! But even if you're on their waitlist, they will be super accommodating and even let cats stay in extra bedrooms in their home and do a home visit or two if it fits in their schedule. Wow!
This place is great for anything from a long weekend to a multiple week trip. You get a written page of how your kitty was feeling that day and the various activities they did. It probably doesn't make sense to take them here if you'll only be gone for 1-2 nights, because any car trip can be mildly traumatic for kitties.
Since I have two cats, they were put in the same room (the size of a small closet, but well-lit and with ample "vertical" space), for something like $25/day for the first cat and $10/day for the additional cat. I think their rates have gone up a bit since 2009 though. They will accommodate nearly any special requests or crazy things your cat does, and love every minute of it.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough - it will be sad when we move away from San Diego because our kitties will not get to stay at the Purring Parrot when we are out of town.
The Purring Parrot was a last minute savior when it came to housing my cat King. I recently moved within San Diego, and didn't want to risk scarring off my cat during the move. I had called 2 other local pet boarding locations, however their work hours were not accurate, nor did they return my messages for 4 days!! I stumbled upon the Purring Parrot here on Yelp and the positive reviews are extremely accurate.
King was welcomed with a room ready for his "highness". The staff was very friendly and made the entire process painless and very cost effective. When I had mentioned the first time client discount here on Yelp, I accidentally thought it was 10%, but they quickly corrected me and honored the 20% discount. It is these little things that has earned my business for as long as I am in San Diego.
Thank you Purring Parrot
We had a fabulous experience with boarding our cat at Purring Parrot. We were referred by my husband's boss who boards his parrot here. We were getting ready to leave on a three week trip out of the country not relishing the thought of boarding our cat at the vets. Then we found Purring Parrot...we went there to check out the place and the staff was so nice! He had a whole room to himself with ramps up the walls and great hiding places. The door to the room was glass so he could see the birds which was great entertainment for him. Maria emailed me almost every day with updates and even sent us a video of him so we could see how well he was doing.
I was really worried since he usually is so stressed out when we leave him...he loses weight and won't eat. He loved it there so much that when we went to pick him up he ignored us.
I am so trilled that we found Purring Parrot...it will now always be our go to place for boarding our cat.
What a totally cool concept for pet care. I have never boarded my kitty Buster before, and was not sure how it would be for either of us. He's completely neurotic! He gets traumatized just driving a block in the car.
I can't say enough about how nice the people at Purring Parrot are, and what a great space they have. The layout of the place is great (except that you have to lug your stuff up a flight of narrow stairs first) - there are a series of little rooms about the size of walk-in closets that surround the main aviary. Each kitty suite is painted in a different decor, with lots of activities and carpeted ledges for them to climb up to a "safe" place and hide like kitties do. I loved that they put a little privacy curtain up on the topmost ledge so that shy kitties can hang out up there and feel like they're invisible. The doors on the suites are glass so the cats can watch the birds and keep themselves entertained. The people there are so nice too - they played with him twice a day, which is more than he gets at home! I would definitely recommend it. In fact, I'm sure I was annoying to my friends as I gushed about the experience all week afterwards. Reasonably priced, I thought, but I'm not a pro at this so don't have much to compare. I did notice that they now have a coupon in the Uptown Coupons magazine, so if I have to board my cat again I'll save a few bucks.
Our special needs kitten stayed at the purring parrot for 6 nights during December 2008. We we very pleased with the service, amenities and value. He will stay at the Purring Parrot next time we abandon him.
This place was awesome! I took my cat Scottie there when I was away for a week. He got plenty of attention and great care. Maria sent me pictures while I was away to prove he was having a great time. I felt very relieved to know that he was not stressed out. I am definitely coming back!
We love the Purring Parrot. This past week was our first visit and will definitely not be our last. We have one kitty (Pernod) that experienced some health problems last year and one kitty (Marseille) that tends to be very timid. We were a little apprehensive but are so happy we gave the Purring Parrot a try. Both cats were loved and nurtured by Maria. When we arrived to pick them up they were happy and content kitties, just what you want to see after a week away. Pernod looks as healthy as ever and I swear Marseille is less timid. Being able to leave town and know that our cats are being watched with such care made our vacation much more enjoyable. We went on vacation.....they went to kitty camp. A great experience for all.
The Purring Parrot is a fantastic place to take your kitty for an overnight or extended stay. My cat Oscar was well taken care of. He is a very shy kitty and they set up a special area for him to hide and took the time to give him some love every day (even though his roomie, my sister's cat, attempted to hog all the attention :) ). Before I dropped him off I filled out an extensive form about his likes, dislikes, teperment, etc; and after I picked him up they had filled out a daily diary with what he did that day, whether he played or just got petted, etc. They really made me feel like they cared about Oscar and gave him all the attention I would have if he was at home. I highly recommend the Purring Parrot and would definitely take my baby back here!
