12 reviews for The Pump Energy Food
So, not gonna lie their smoothie with instant coffee and chocolate protein is so delicious. With a banana in it. I love it but it's also $5.50 and its not that big or filling. I haven't really gotten down on their food - I had a $8 wrap with tofu and veggies and while it was good, it did in fact leave an empty voided space called lunch in my stomach and work day.
I will be back for those damn smoothies - but, don't think I'll be back for any solid food anytime soon.
You guys are slipping!!!
A few things first. I have been coming here for over four months. I think the quality of the food is the same, not any better. It is hit or miss. Sometimes, all the steamed vegetables are delicious and other times they taste like they are not steamed enough or have been left out for quite some time.
Next, I have to say that this place is really starting to stretch a buck. When I first started going here, it seemed like the quantity of food was much more than it is now. Stop skimming the patrons!!!
No thanks!

I'm very surprised at the reviews on this place. I live down in the financial district and I was… Read more »
I'm sorry but this place blows.
I tried the wraps.. did not like it. I tried the super-charged plates.. did not like it. The food is healthy but extremely bland and quite boring.
There are only 3 things to like about this particular Pump location.
1) Their seating is awesome (those red bar stools are comfy and stylish!)
2) The breakfast wrap isn't so bad (baked egg whites? revolutionary concept.)
3) The peanut dream shake (I think that's the right name, but if not, they only have one peanut drink and it's absolutely amazingly delicious!!!)
I'll even add a 4th bullet for the service. Friendly and efficient.
I don't see this Pump lasting too long... unfortunately, they seemed to have veered off the original and famed Pump menu and is now suffereing because of that. They should have stuck with what worked in the past (I've heard folks asking about the "western wrap" time and again, but it's not an option on their menu).
I barely see customers during lunchtime. That's not a good sign.
In light of the consistent, rapidly flowing lines every weekday lunch, the proof is in the pudding and I'm shocked about these yelp reviews.
Question for people who fail to enjoy their meal at The PUMP and proceed to ramble on about it:
"Who is more bland / boring / tasteless, you, or the PUMP?"
Here's the issue: the PUMP requires you to build your own meal. The food group is sorta unconventional (not salads, burritos, sandwiches or burgers), so it takes some time to figure out what works for you.
Luckily, when given phenomenally high quality ingredients, most people can more easily build their own meal than, say, build their own car, clothing or computers. If you can't build a delicious meal as you stand in front of an unparalleled spread of fresh, flavorful, lean mean food, then I am eternally grateful that you're not also tasked with custom making anything else. Because you must not be.
Ask the patrons, managers or line workers. The place has a very warm vibe. People there are helpful, so if you don't know, ask somebody how to do better.
Don't complain, get outside of your confining box; maybe take an art class, or dance lessons.
Here are some of my favorites:
--Super Charged Plate with bison meatballs, balsamic mushrooms, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cheddar, roasted red pepper sauce, hot sauce
--Salad with 12-hour turkey, brown rice, string beans, hummus, hot sauce
--Egg white omelet with broccoli and bison. Once its finished cooking, add guacamole, diced tomatoes, chilli.
As long as you approach the meals here knowing that it is "healthy food", its not so bad in comparison to other health food joints out there. The food is decent and fills you up without leaving you feeling greasy and comatose.
For years, The Pump was one of those rare, curious oddities of Murray Hill that actually distinguished it from other neighborhoods in the city. The seating was non-existant, the menu was long and confusing, the wait was upwards of 10 minutes, and the food, while hearty, satisfying and probably very healthy for you . . . was almost always excrutiatingly bland. You came because you felt better for yourself for eating there, not because you actually looked forward to it. Coming in with this understanding, it's easier for me to see this latest iteration of The Pump as a major step up.
To compare it to Chipotle is to miss the point entirely. Lined up against such post-gym mainstays as Energy Kitchen or BetterBurger, it is faster, more flavorful, and less expensive. They have replaced the lenghty old menu with a more straightforward build-your-own salad/sandwich/wrap format. They have introduced a greater variety of lean proteins-including savory bison meatballs, and lean briscuit (where before you were restricted to chicken, baked tofu, egg whites, and flavorless lean steak)-kicked things up a notch with their marinated chicken, and brought in a wider of selection of fresh, dark vegetables (before you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that wasn't steamed). As such, the line moves alot quicker (the open kitchen is quite large) and you'll have no trouble finding a place to sit.
Considering the garbage they expect us to live off of down here, Wall Street can do worse than to have a fast, affordable, decent-tasting aternative to Subway, Chipotle, and Just Salads.
You won't mistake what you're eating for, say, Arby's. But guess what? You're not supposed to.
The problem with this place is the textures: way too much damp/soggy, not nearly enough crisp/crunchy. Also, trying to cross a sandwich shop with a burrito place ends in tears. Here's the basic premise:
- base of brown rice, wheat wrap, or salad greens
- protein, either bison, beef, chicken, or "vegetarian option of the day," a.k.a. steamed tofu squares
- vegetables, either broccoli, spinach, vegetarian chili, cucumbers, tomatoes, or peppers and onions
- some sort of mystery sauce, either green or red
- add hummus or guacamole for an extra charge.
If these combinations sound weird, they are. The line moves quickly, you have to make decisions fast, and it's easy to end up with a $10 disaster. The first time I went, I ended up with a bowl of brown rice with tofu, chili, cucumbers, tomatoes, and broccoli, swimming in guacamole. It just didn't work. And everything is steamed, which makes your food a hot wet mess.
I feel bad, because the owner (I assume) is always out in front, greeting people and trying to explain how the menu works. He's cheery and chipper - and to be fair, some of my coworkers love this place, but it just doesn't work for me. I'd like to see them separate out the "bowl" stuff from the "sandwich/salad" stuff, add some soups, more creative dressings, and some better non-meat protein toppings, like egg salad or tuna.
The decor is nice, but unfortunately you can't eat shiny faux-industrial exposed piping.
***My comment in their comments box***
I will tell you exactly what I am thinking...
You guys have ruined your name. The location has to be the worst establishment in the area! I wrote a comment to you after I had lunch here the first day you were open describing how the new menu is terrible and how the food was sub par at best.
Now I must tell you, I tried you guys for breakfast, came up short again. Everyone down here puts oil on their grill and thought you would have something to offer. NO!!! I was wrong again! I got back to my desk at Deutsche Bank (on the trading floor, 30 people watched me eat and heard me complain), and the uncooked egg, because you don't use oil, started not dripping but draining out of the sandwich. I will gladly run the extra mile to run off the grease from the other establishements grills.
I guess I will have to give one more shot for the shakes. I hope I don't have write you another negative comment.
Side note: everyone is very friendly!!

The name conjures images of a juice bar with protein shakes, shots of wheatgrass, energy bars, and plenty of carbs to make you wonder why they chose a swinging door instead of a revolving one.
However, the menu is reminiscent of Chipotle and the food combinations are confusing. There were 2 different types of water available and no fruit. Makes you wonder how much thought was put into the establishment.
Very good, healthy food. At first glance, I thought this place was pretty much the same as Chipotle. But it's far from it. The food is more or less your usual protein-rich food to give you solid energy throughout the day. I usually get the chicken wrap with a few add-ons. The cuts of meat (epsecially the chicken) are 1,000 times healhier, meatier, leaner, cleaner, better, and tastier than Chipotle could EVER hope to be (it's a joke even to compare them). In fact, Chipotle's chicken seems like pure garbage in comparison.
I usually get the whole wheat wrap with brown rice, chicken, three-bean vegetarian chili, cucumbers and dill, some hummus, and a touch of hot sauce. There are other add-ons, such as steamed broccoli, veggie medley, steamed spinach, etc. One of the most satisfying, filling meals, and it keeps you going throughout the day. And overall, the place is very keen on making healthy food that's free of oil, cholesterol, and other garbage. A decent wrap with your choosings will usually run you under $10.
Healthy food choices in a very clean, spacious atmosphere. Finally a place that has the right idea. Definitely try this place.
The predatorily phenomenon of various restaurant attempts to cater to more "healthy" clients has led to the establishment of The Pump Energy Food in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. Given that the circumstances faced with the majority of Financial Institutions here in the United States, The Pump Energy Grill defies the economic downturn and establishes itself in a sector where the common and trendy approach to lunch time consumption is found in the form of "brown bag lunch". Nevertheless, there are those of us who do find the occasional restaurant lunch purchase to be rewarding. Thus... The Pump Energy Food is the way to go.
The establishment... Mostly upscale and trendy! Although the establishment dictates a grab and go type atmosphere, dine in patrons will find the dark metallic black and gun metal colors to be highly energetic. The grim yet sleek décor of the establishment reminds patrons that they're dining in more of a get up and go type atmosphere. Solid reinforced plastic seating surrounding metal long length tables gives the idea restaurant a juice bar in a workout facility type feel. Patrons will find that eating at The Pump Energy Food resembles that of any other fast food establishment, only with a more upbeat feel.
The Food... Opted to order the "Chicken & Spinach Twist". The application includes Marinated Chicken, Steamed Spinach, Low-Sodium Tomato Sauce, and Non-Fat Mozzarella that's wrapped around a Whole Wheat Twist. In description, the sandwich wrap is a healthy - low calorie choice. Sadly, the application and use of the various ingredients failed in both construction and taste. At first presentation, it was evident that the Steamed Spinach used in the wrap was not drained, thus led to an excessive watery wrap. The excess liquid flow derived from the Spinach diluted any of the marinade taste used for the chicken. Although a bit discerning, the hints of salt and tomato sauce were evident in the wrap, but was unfortunately diluted by the execution error with the Spinach. Furthermore, the Low-Sodium Tomato Sauce was rather on the tart side in terms of taste. The acidity derived from the sauce hindered the properly cooked chicken. Overall, if the application used that of Sauteed Spinach in lieu of Steamed Spinach, the taste and textural composition would work remarkably well with one another.
Overall expectations were as anticipated. Although the hefty price tag of $7.65 was a bit much to pay for a poorly executed wrap. Nevertheless, the restaurant is at its first week of operations. I anticipate that establishment will fine tune its application approach as more consumer feedback is made available.
I enjoyed the flavors of the food, but the portions are the WORST!! I got a salad and they put about 1 cup of lettuce in the bowl, by the time everything else got mixed in the bowl was only 1/2 full. The next day I ordered a plate with brown rice, spicy bison & spinach, the server acted like she was using a tweezer to serve the spinach. I know times are hard for new businesses but if The Pump wants to survive on Wall Street they are going to have to step their game up!
