13 reviews for The Pub
My folks used to take me to the Pub when I was a kid...it was awesome then and still is now...it's been a while since I've been (2004), but I can tell you that it was just as I remembered...really good...yes, it's dark inside, and HUGE, but the food they put out is so good...I've always loved their chicken and ribs dinner, and the salad bar is also excellent...very clean, really big.
Definite atmosphere like from the 1500's...knights and all...
you can't go wrong at the Pub!!
Boy my Dad would have loved this place, and there's very little not to love about the Pub. Located at the end of Admiral Wilson Blvd at the junction of Camden and Pennsauken, most people zoom by at about 60 miles an hour as they flee the Camden wastelands on the way to AC. Such a shame.
The place is huge, from the parking lot to the bar to the main dining room. As you are brought down on the main floor looking at the seven huge wood fired hearths, it seems like they could seat 1000 people. (they probably have!) Yes, the place is old school, it's been in business for 57 years and maintains that old school combo diner steakhouse feel, and there's no good reason that should dissuade you, think of it as 'kitsch'.
As for being dark, I've been in many lounge style restaurants where I've needed my cell to read the menu, Vetri included, so don't think they escort you with flashlights. I'll also point out that as we usually go early for dinner, there are plenty of older folks there and they seem to get along just fine.
So let's get down to why you're coming. Huge steaks, charcoal grilled and darn tasty for a reasonable price. The 'Relish Bar' (salad bar) is also a nice touch, and is always being restocked with fresh ingredients. Don't miss the cheese or date nut bread at the end, they're my favorites.
I've included some pictures of our food, I had the bone in ribeye and a cup of snapper soup, my son has the 12oz strip, and our guest has the boneless ribeye. We all enjoyed our meal, and it was perfectly cooked.
The snapper soup was strangely thick, almost seeming to have a bean base, and the meat, although plentiful, didn't actually taste like turtle. The accompanying sherry also was pretty weak, but that was the exception. Normally it's all top notch, and I suspect someone new was making the soup and a busboy was nipping at the sherry and refilling it with water.
Did I mention the 1/2 basketball size loaf of bread that hits your table as you're being seated? How about the airplane style service carts that your food is delivered in, each equipped with a gallon of fresh made au-jus for those that like some extra sauce. Seriously. Want some extra on your steak, of course. Your potato too? Certainly. Directly into your mouth. Open wider hon. A glass to drink after I leave? Here you are. Yum.
Huge potatos, some baked, some stuffed, and some double stuffed, accompany your platter. Double stuffed resembles a potato skin on steroids and is pretty much a meal in itself. I wish they had a sweet potato option.
We've never made it to dessert, but I can say they make a darn good cup of coffee. The desserts sit spinning in a cold case as you walk in, and are tempting, but there's just no room left! Our server, The meticulous Maureen, kept our sodas full and stopped by at least five times to make sure all was going well. We'll request her again for sure.
Three huge steak dinners for three, with take home extras, all for less than breakfast at Max Brenner's. How can you beat it!!
This place is my idea of awesome. Ceasar salad with tons of anchovies, perfectly cooked prime rib big enough for two, dynamite horseradish sauce, plus all the classic "the shining" kitsch a girl can handle. I will return.
Do you enjoy eating in complete darkness? Well, if you said "Yes", just head on down to The Pub!
Do you enjoy eating mediocre food? Well, if you said "Yes", just head on down to The Pub!
Do you enjoy being served by a 200 year old woman who just can't seem to get your order right? Well, if you said "Yes", just head on down to The Pub!
But, if you answered "No" to all of these things, you are a normal person, and you probably don't want to eat at The Pub.
WARNING:
Vegetarians and Vegans beware... You're in for a SCARE!!!! MWAHAHAHA!!! *chime Goosebumps opening music*
Wonder what it would be like to eat in the medieval times? Well this is close as it gets! The interior is big enough for your 400 pound uncle and the rest of your Fat Greek Family and if they aren't Greek? That's fine too. The food is to die for, and by that you might if you try to finish the whole steak, which is close to the one you see in the Flintstone's opening where Fred receives a brontosaurus sirloin that makes the car topple over. I happened to try the butterfly fried shrimp, which were almost the size of my fist, individually. You get to watch all the cooks work the awesome brick ovens and the smells of cooking flesh brings out the caveman or woman in you.
If you happen to be a Vegetarian and don't mind watch people tear into ribs like the beasts we are, they do have some veggie-styled meals too. Take it, there are only two dishes compared to the meat, meat, other meat, and meaty meat sections in the menu. They also have a kick-arse salad bar and they encourage you to pile your plate. Don't go near the raisins though, I had an issue with finding hairs in them as I ate. Guess they keep the same raisins each day and brush as much dust from the surface? I hope not! Everything else though gets my props.
If you notice their 1&1/2 symbol, they are also a pub after all and they put that many shots into your cocktails. I asked that question on the way out. Well there you have it. If you want to bring out the carnivore in you, come here with an appetite.
I don't know why I've never reviewed The Pub - it is my mother's favorite restaurant and I like it well enough myself. From the outside you would never guess that the inside looks like a huge english alehouse complete with stuffed animal heads on the walls. The portions are HUGE. The prime rib is fantastic - lovely marbled slab of meat that you are. I also enjoy the stuffed salmon. They serve these weird pop over things that never seem to be eaten by anyone. The salad bar is quite good - REAL bacon bits! I had taken my mother to a number of steak restaurants in and around Philadelphia since she moved back to the city after living down the shore for 30 years and missing Library III restaurant on the Black Horse Pike. The Pub fit her needs for a casual restaurant with friendly waitstaff that serves up snapper soup, surf and turf, and huge desserts.
Whenever I bring a friend to The Pub for the first time, the reaction is always the same,Wow is this place huge or what? They could stage a nightly chariot race without interupting anyones dinner! Speaking of dinner, the open brick ovens are home to some of the best tasting steaks in NJ The homemade bread served with every meal is almost worth the trip in itself. The salad bar may be small ,but everything on it is excellent. The carrot salad is incredible. If you're in the Philadelphia/ South Jersey area, or visiting the aquarium in Camden, you must check out this old time steakhouse. Ample parking, and quick seating are a plus.
This place is one of my favorite restaurants. I've been going here since I was a little kid. Why? Total kitsch. Delicious steaks. Roaring ovens. Medieval decor. Little carts that the waitresses push out and serve you table side. Like I said. Uber kitsch. The caesar salad is out of this world. I judge all caesar salads by the Pub's standard.
The Pub is one of my mom's favorite restaurant's. The seating area is huge, and the service always good enough. Watching the cooks in the back is cool, and the salad bar a nice perk. There's really nothing all that good about it, but nothing to complain about either.
A friend of mine works in Camden, and he dragged me to this place for lunch one day. It's was a few minutes from his workplace, where Pennsauken meets Camden.
You walk in and the place swallows you. It's dungeon like. I felt like there should have been a renaissance-style duel at the far end of the room, but, alas, there was only a lonely salad bar.
For a place that size, the food surprisingly came without anything major to complain about. Of course, there were very few people in the establishment when my friend and I went, during lunch. Which is funny, since we still our service was still pretty slow. (But then, with a restaurant that size, it probably took the waitress to get from the kitchen to our table.)
This may be a quirky place for an office get-together, but definitely don't book this monster of a restaurant for your wedding/bar mitzvah. It will draw more than a few unpleasant snickers/chuckles.
A great place for a side of beef! I have been going to the Pub since I was a wee one and noting much has changed! The wait can be long on the weekends but, the food is well worth it. It is simply good food with no frills. One of my favorites is the wedge of iceberg lettuce with Blue Cheese Dressing. The waitstaff delivers your dinner on a cart with your meat, potatoes and any other fixins you desire. The service is usually good but, can someties be a little slow. Bottom line, if you are hankering for some good old meat and potatoes, this should defintely be a stop!
I'm a huge salad bar fan.
This one rocks.
Love the setting. Fell like your in another time.
Great for big groups.
Love this place daddy o. I gotta get back there.
