One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I was working down in the Fisherman's Wharf area and I saw this new restaurant. Since moving to San Francisco from New York, I have been striving to find a BBQ restaurant that compares to some of the places back east and I think I have finally found it. Probably one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I have had in a long time. And their tater tots are a great side. Both people that I ate with agreed that their meals were excellent. The service was fantastic and the prices were good, given that it is in Ghiradelli Square. Definitely give this place a shot.
The Pub is probably the only bar I'll frequent regularly in the Wharf/Ghirardelli Sq. area (aside from Fiddler's Green) The people running/working this joint can practically read minds, they're that cool.
Bartender: What can I get you?
Me: I dunno, make me something you think I'll like.
Bartender: *Pancake shot*
Me: OMG. Make me another!
Bartender: You look hungry *hands me a menu*
Me: FAMISHED!!!
Actually, I think I might prefer the Pub over many of the bars in my neck of the woods, the walk is compensated by good service, food, and fun times.
Do the pork sliders, tots, and brisket. I'm telling you!
Worlds collided at The Pub:
My world was minimal sleep, smelling like a cigarette (thanks people who smoke indoors!) and needing to refuel after a six hour Tiesto dancing marathon.
Their world was XL jerseys, beer, yelling at football on TV and girlfriends passing the time on their iPhones.
We usually don't mix. Except over brunch.
I wonder if they shared my opinion of the french toast. Good, but not great. The strawberry compote and whipped cream seemed to be missing - perhaps the chef kept it off after I asked for no butter. I'll never know. Side salad was a nice touch, and was a good reason for another side of that fantastic house BBQ sauce (see previous five star yelp for dinner.
I did leave refueled, less interested in beer and sports, and still highly recommending The Pub for dinner. Brunch can be skipped.

I should preface this by saying I normally am willing to give a place multiple chances before reviewing but the food that was served did not entice me to return.
When I first saw a flier indicating a new place at Ghiradelli Square, I was excited at a new casual dining experience in the area. I should have known better then to dine here once I stepped into the placed and could smell the cleaning solvents used in the bathrooms. I guess to comment on the rest of the atmosphere...it's a bar set up for sports viewing on multiple flatscreen TVs. Great idea for the location, it's just unfortunate the food is terrible.
We choose to dine outside under the heat lamps which provided enough heat to keep the night's chill away.
To keep it simple I ordered their burger to see if they could provide something simple...it was simply small, the meat tasted old to say the least, the fries tasted just like the frozen Ore-Ida french fries that were warmed in a vat of fat.Very soft with no crispness. Adding a 1/4 of an avacado made it an expensive burger.
My wife had the truffle oil mac and cheese. The Macaroni was overcooked to a point of mush.
For a burger, a bowl of mac and cheese and 1 Guiness Beer...$40+ including tip...very expensive "pub" food. The quality of food is questionable and the price is too expensive. I suppose you are paying for location and trying to take advantage of the unassuming tourists that are unloaded from buses in close proximity. Locals looking for a place to rely on should be warned to stay away if you want quality food for your money.
Overall we were not impressed with THE PUB at the Ghiradelli location, and won't be returning.
Bartender Mike - cool guy from New York, good luck in Barcelona, buddy!
Truffle Mac & Cheese - yummm
The Pub Melt - just OK
Pineapple Vodka shots - damn these are good & do not taste too fruity or alcohol-y
Hubby and I met a couple cool folks there who were visiting from Washington D.C., laughed so hard, blame it on the alcohol! Otherwise, on a Wednesday night, the place was D-E-A-D. I'm sure it's busy on the weekends & when the weather's warmer. Just a few doors down from Buena Vista and alot of parking nearby on the street. Wouldn't recommend for large groups though, the place is kinda small, but overall a great spot to grab a drink and gaze at the ocean =)
Pros:
-Outdoor seating
-Great service
-World's best tater tots
-Great Ribs
-Fantastic mac & cheese
-Locally owned (one partner is Barb from Bell Tower)
Cons:
-Southern fried chicken is just ok
We came back here on Wednesday night and I gorged on a plate of hot wings THEN had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of tater tots.
By the time the sandwich came out, I could barely eat half of it. It was pretty good. It was juicy and not overly drenched in barbecue sauce. However, what blew me away were the tater tots. I know, I know... What can be soooo great about tater tots? For me, they were the crispiest I've ever had, although kinda "juicy" at the same time. I've only had mushy tots before. So, for me, this was a momentous occasion. Hehe.
Thank you The Pub for the memories!

4.5 stars - WTF?? I do notice that a bunch of the reviews are written by Yelpers with less than 10 reviews or only a couple of friends which looks suspicious. I can't explain the elite reviews though!!
I was excited to find this place on Yelp, with the potential to knock In'N'Out off it's long-standing perch as the best restaurant in Fisherman's Wharf - what a disappointment!
I ordered fried chicken - which at $18 is not too cheap, but I thought, well this place is supposed to be good, so we'll see. The chicken was tender (even the white meat), but it had this really funky flavour, like sweet and sour. It was like it was marinated in vinegar....and sugar. I'm trying to eat less nowadays, so I don't mind so much about portion size, but these guys must use some kind of miniature chickens or something. I swear I've seen chicken breasts at Safeway bigger than the drumstick, thigh and breast combined at this place!!
I ordered a side of creamed spinach, which was bland and tasteless - how can you mess that up? The mac and cheese was very good though.
I tried some of my friend's ribs and brisket, which were average at best.
So for now, In'N'Out remains my best option if I'm in the Wharf (which I hope is not too often) :)
If you are looking for a great place to watch the game, eat some great food with a friendly crowd, all while enjoying a great view, the Pub is the place. I think the "Ghirardelli Square" is a little misleading, considering the crowd is not a touristy group. Big round tables perfect for groups, a spacious bar area where you aren't squeezing your way in to get a drink, all with an incredibly friendly staff. Been there on numerous occasions and haven't had a bad time yet (not including the way I feel the next morning).
Oh, and the drinks are very reasonable.
My son and husband will eat burned pizza. They will also eat very expensive, fresh and beautifully prepared meals that make some people weep with joy. They have pretty much the same reaction to both.
We went to this restaurant because the fine folks on Yelp highly recommended it. The family ordered the pulled pork sandwiches and spent the entire meal talking (with their mouths full) about how much they liked it. My son told the waiter he would need to come back and have the sandwich again before he died (he's fourteen so he's got some time).
Again, these are people that will eat burned pizza. Cold.
I try to stimulate the economy as much as I can and after my sunday shifts at Ghiradelli you best believe I hit this place up!
Extremely close to work so I can't complain. Amazing bartenders and great staff. The food is pretty good (portabella mushroom burger anyone? My new fav!) and the drinks are super yummy and delicious! If you go on a saturday or sunday night ask for a PB&J. MmmmMMmm
Theres a juke box with an awesome selection of tunes.
Oh- and it's open till 1:30 a. m every frickin day. Heeeellloooo?
Do me a favor- come here, get your drink on, have some tasty apps, mingle with your fellow patrons and watch some sports. It's a win win.
Being week one of football season, the bf politely requested to eat at a place with a t.v. and that was showing the Niners game. And I wanted to check out the Chocolate Festival at Ghirardelli Square. So I looked on Yelp to see what could accommodate both of our demands. I found The Pub at Ghirardelli Square and quickly glanced over their menu online. Reasonable prices (for being at a heavily touristy location) and it was right where I wanted to be. It was the perfect spot! (Well, perfect for me but I was secretly hoping they had a t.v.!)
Of course street parking is difficult around here, but the parking gods were in our favor as we found street parking a block away. YES!
We walked halfway through the Chocolate Festival and into The Pub. Gorgeous! High ceilings, spacious, dark wood and furniture - it seemed like the tourists were nowhere near and you were just hanging out at a neigborhood bar. I already liked the feel of this place. And to the bf's delight, there were several HD t.v.'s displayed on the walls showing, of course, the Niners.
Nearly every seat was taken, except two seats at the bar. Score! Today really was our day! We looked over the menu and I decided on the Grilled Marinated Portabella sandwich with a side of salad, while the bf went for the Beef Brisket sandwich and tater tots (tater tots, I know! This is probably one of the only restaurants I know that has tater tots as a side option).
My plate came out and I was almost disappointed. It looked too simple - grilled portabella with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, crispy onions and aioli on a bun. I know that's exactly what the menu described it to be, but I guess I was expecting more...of what, I don't know. Color? Two mushroom tops instead of one? However, I took one bite and all my misconceptions went away. The aioli was a winner! And the portabella packed so much flavor, I did not miss the meat at all! But I would have appreciated a bit more of the salad portion, though. Since it was basically mixed greens with balsamic vinegarette, I think they could afford to put more on the plates.
Let's not forget what this place is really known for - the bbq. And they did not disppoint! The Beef Brisket sandwich was delicious! The brisket wasn't doused in bbq sauce, and the horseradish mayo wasn't overpowering at all - you can actually taste the well-seasoned and perfectly cooked beef. However, I would have liked to have seen the brisket on a sourdough roll rather than in between two pieces of sourdough sandwich bread (just a personal preference). Needless to say, we both finished our plates =)
Staff was extremely sociable and all seemed to be having a great time with the customers. The bartender, Brian, informed us that they had just opened in July. Wow! And already an average of 4 stars on Yelp?! They've got nothing to worry about!
Bf and I were doing the Alcatraz tour and were trying to find a place nearby (that wasn't touristy) to meet my friend for some drinks. Friend suggested this place.
It was about a 15 minute walk from Pier 33. The place has great wood decor, tons of booths along the sides of the restaurant; luckily we snagged one by the windows. Got a few rounds of beer and some apps (cheese quesadillas, tator tots with a side of cheese sauce, and my friend got chicken tenders). Beers came quickly and apps followed soon. They were pretty good; the fire roasted salsa had a nice little kick to it, the cheese sauce was awesome with the tator tots.
Beers were, for the most part, $5 which to me is a steel in terms of city prices!
Great find!
Wings are good!

Visiting SF with my son. Found this joint by accident while walking to Fisherman's Wharf . I LOVE BBQ, so gave it a try - absolutely great! Have been to Texas many times and the brisket served here far exceeded anything I've ever eaten in TX. My son had the Pub Melt and was equally pleased. Even the turnip and brussle sprout sides were incredible. We highly recommend this place for a very good and reasonably priced dinner in the SF waterfront area!!!
A perfect venue for a large, casual group. The crew at The Pub was more than accommodating of our last minute gathering. Even though our Sunday Funday football crowd ballooned from 8 to 30, the servers and bartender never missed a beat. Blood Mary's were fantastic and I enjoyed a BLT salad that was dee-lish!
It's a touristy location--not some place I'd normally patronize...but I was there for a fundraising event and was pleasantly surprised.
The staff there were very friendly..and a great menu of delicious pub food that every good pub should have. The highlights were the pulled pork sandwiches with tator tots, chili mac-n-cheese..and their fried potato chips. It's a great venue for an event or for large parties.
You know this place deserves 5 stars just for the tucked away factor alone. It is a strange oddity to be directly under Ghiradelli Square and still feel like you have just stepped out of the beaten path to your own private sanctuary from the hell of tourism that Fisherman's Wharf offers you.
We opted for their 1/2 rack of ribs with some tasty fixings on the side. Their cornbread was moist and pretty fabulous. I find myself quite the connoisseur of cornbread (I make a mean batch that is tough to beat) and theirs definitely gave me a run for my money. The sauteed green beans were crisp and perfectly cooked. The corn was ridiculous. Seriously, crispy fresh sweet corn with (wait for it) BACON! It was tasty, fresh and crispy all around. My only complaint is that their regular BBQ sauce was too heavy on the tomato sauce and not enough BBQ-ey in flavor. I should mention I also took a few nibbles of the mac n' cheese that my mister got and while it was a little greasy thanks to the overload of cheese, it was delicious!
Service is great, friendly and efficient.
Price point is incredible considering the area, $16/plate and that included both sides and the cornbread.
If you are in the area give it a shot.
Great addition to the Fisherman's Wharf area. If you are seeking something other than the typical seafood and Italian food here at the Wharf, The Pub is a great option--the food is Southern, with a California Twist.
Came here for lunch during work and had the BBQ Ribs. Extremely y u m m y ribs; meaty, tender, and BBQ sauce was sweet and had a nice zing to them. BBQ Sauce wasn't overpowering the ribs as many places tend to do, resulting in the drowning of ribs in sauce. But the sauce was perfectly smuthered on.
The plate also came with corn bread which was great as well. It was nice and soft, almost like a cake texture, and had nice little bits of real corn in it, as opposed to a corn bread batter mix. Loved the flavor.
Their Chipotle Coleslaw also came as a side dish with the ribs. I would pass on this next time in exchange for another side, as the coleslaw was extremely bland. It did have a little kick to it, but didn't really do much to, due to the fact that it was lacking in flavor so much.
Have yet to have a drink here, and looking foward to coming back, since they have a great list of beer, wine, and cocktails.
The space is very spread out and classy, with dark brown furniature, and high ceilings. Great aspect for a bar, as I can imagine just how stuffy and hot it could get.
Overall, the meaty ribs and BBQ sauce and corn bread have me wanting to come back for more. I just hope the other sides have more flavor than the coleslaw!

Brand New Pub we stubbled across last night. Great to meet up with your friends for pre-party night or make it your new neighborhood Bar & Grill. Southern Style BBQ and a full bar! The menu includes pulled pork, brisket, ribs and mac & cheese. They are open and serving food 7 days a week until 1:30am. If you are looking for a cheap night for a beer special~ $3 Bud & Bud Lights ! The staff is very friendly and helpful. The pub is right on the wharf so the view is beautiful. Forget about parking, take muni, taxi, or walk :) unless you don't mind spending loads for parking garage/lot.
Right before this place opened, I had mentioned to a friend that I have not been down to Fishermens Wharf/Ghirardelli square for a long time. I think too many of us have given it up and leaving it for the tourist. Well, now I have a reason to head down there.
In all fairness, I have to mention that one of the owners is a friend of mine and that is why I went down there the first time. But I have been back several times and have even suggested it for a birthday party for a large group of friends (they all had a great time).
The BBQ here is really good. I've had the brisket, fried chicken and the mac and cheese; they are all good. The mac and cheese really stands out, but then I think wonder bread would taste great if you put truffle cream on it. The fried chicken was done just right. The brisket was really good, lean with just the right amount of fat. My only complaint about the brisket sandwich was that it was served on grilled toast, with the brisket, it was just a little too greasy, wished I had a little coleslaw to cut down the fat content (while you can order coleslaw, it does not come with the sandwich); I would have preferred a plain roll with the brisket.
The staff is very friendly, they are trying to be more than just you typical tourist place and wants to build a regular crowd. Try it, and you might just find a reason to head down to that area of the city again. Plus the kitchen is opened till 1:30am and they validate parking (2 hours).
Kick Ass Bartenders! Great times and good food, even late!
the pub melt is heaven! u gotta check this place out for that sandwich alone! omg, it's sooo good!
After a thorough discussion of options in north Beach and Girredelli Square, I decided to bring my mother, aunt, and her two friends from Minnesota to this southern spot. We were all in the mood for something different aned that is definitely what we got. The service is very friendly and they are very knowlegable about the menu and not to mention young and hot.! The corn bread is moist yet firm with a buttery crust on the outside and moist interior of buttery, corny goodness. The southern fried chicken is crispy and well seasoned from the badder to the bone; the meat is probably some of the moistest I have ever had. Be sure to bring your appetite as the portions are big and on top of that, you get two sides; the macaroni and cheese will spoil you for Kraft or any other version elsewhere with aldentae noodles and a rich, cheesy, buttery sauce that is so sinful it isn't funny. The candied yams are sweet and savery with a starchy consistency similar to potatos and a brown sugar crust that rivals sweet potatos any day. I only wish that I would have gotten a chance to try the organic persimin tart; definitely next time. I also got to eat everyones' leftovers the next day and they were just as good; the beef and pork ribs tender and meaty with a smoky barbecue sauce. Round it off with a couple Bud Lights and you will not be disappointed. The classic rock playing was a major bonus, as was the layed back, yet lively crowd. So, for excellent southern fare at reasonable prices in a casual, stylish atmosphere at reasonable prices with friendly service, The Pub cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.!
Great food, great service. Thank you Scott and Ben for making our stop very pleasurable! David and Suzy from the SV (sailing vessel) Quest.
Great addition to the neighborhood! Had the pulled pork sliders (YUM!) and they carry my favorite beer, Mirror Pond, on tap. I've been back a few times and it's nice to see the non-tourist patronage. Keep it up!
Silly us. This is a Southern place in Ghirardelli Sq.!! What else to expect besides overpriced food, small portions and not quite authentic cuisine?
The portions really shocked us-main course prices, appetizer portions. It wasn't tiny but we were hoping that for the portions we got, both of our dishes would pack a punch. The food was both a hit and a miss. The miss was the Mac 'n Cheese. I've noticed that Mac 'n Cheese is usually a hit or miss at Southern places. At the Pub, the Mac 'n Cheese was quite bland, the cheese flavor did not stand out and while the bacon bits did add flavor to the dish, it also ended up overpowering the actual Mac 'n Cheese as well.
The hit was the Jambalaya. I've had Jambalaya multiple occasions in the past and never was a fanatic about it, but this was awesome Jambalaya. Very flavorful, fresh, jumbo shrimp, good texture, really good.
The service still needs some work, which is understandable since they opened the day before we went. What was not so understandable or acceptable was that when we entered the restaurant, no one greeted us, much less seat us. The place wasn't packed and there were waiters floating around and a few of the staff members saw us and yet almost pretended not to see us. It made us feel very uncomfortable and was very awkward. Finally after a few long minutes, someone came over and told us we could pick any of the empty tables.
This restaurant seems more Southern with a twist which makes sense considering the area and customers. If you're in the neighborhood doing the tourist thing with out of towners, I would try this place out. Otherwise, I wouldn't brave the tourists and traffic.
The Pub is great, whether it's for a drink after work, Saturday college football, or a Sunday morning brunch with beers and bloodies (ask for the Absolut Peppar or Jalapeno vodka to make it extra spicy), it's a great place to bring a large group of people. They have 8-10 flat screen TVs throughout the bar area as well as the "dining area" which can show various games at once. You can call in ahead and ask if your game will be aired and tables can be accomodated for your group size and viewing pleasure (which i think is exceptional service). There is a great large hi-top round table in the center of the dining area that is absolutely perfect for drinking/dining/viewing with a bunch of friends. The food is great (personal favories - the pub melt, sliders, tommy tots, and truffle mac n' cheese), and the prices are very reasonable. There is a beach right across the street which is nice to hop on over and relax, drink, swim, or play beach games at after a few drinks, which has worked really well for us after Sunday am football games. Conveniently you can order food-to-go from The Pub to bring it back down to the beach. The Pub also works really well with any type of events you want to host there, they are very easy and fun to work with. I never thought I would make the "trek" to Ghiradelli Square as much as I have since The Pub has opened, it's a great experience!
Terrific food and really great people! We came here for lunch and had so much fun that we stayed all day :-)
I had the meatloaf & cheddar sandwich on sourdough -- really delicious and very filling. My SO had the mac & cheese and I kept sneaking bites because it was so good -- also, this is a guy who *always* cleans his plate (good home training) and the mac was so filling that he couldn't finish the whole thing. I was impressed. :-) I'm looking forward to trying everything on the menu!
I really love the location & when the park re-opens it's going to be even nicer. The bar is beautiful & the atmosphere is warm & inviting.
What a nice find among the touristy restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf! Parking is outrageous but you can get validation. We went at 12:30 on a Sunday and the place was empty though it still took a while for the food to arrive. Best fried chicken I've had in a very long time...hot, extra crispy and oh so moist. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent too; potato salad was a bit bland and the candied yams a bit small - but overall a delicious meal. Prices are reasonable for the area too. This restaurant is definitely worth a second visit!
Don't know who the previous reviewer is. I totally disagree with her assessment of this restaurant. The food is definitely fantastic, and is definitely NOT OVERPRICED, especially for San Francisco. I went back to this place several times and the food has been consistently outstanding.
Surprisingly wonderful food! It was mostly empty when I arrived with friends at about 5p, so I wasn't sure. I'm not even a bbq fan, but I got the side mac'n'cheese and green beans. Yum! My friend had the truffle mac'n'cheese. Yum! It's not super cheap but it's certainly not bad for a nice place at fisherman's wharf. Would get 5 stars but the service was not the best... forgot two things on our order, and didn't explain when one waitress sat down across the room texting and another bland waitress took her place.
