About the Business
Enjoy our tuna and crab melts...or if those aren't up your alley, try our veggie and brie sandwich (and if you're not a vegetarian, they you've gotta try it with chicken....mmm, mmm good). We also serve the Impossible Burger...vegetarian or not, this is a tasty option. We serve a hearty portion of shrimp in our shrimp cocktail for a great starter...and if you want a hot appetizer, try our fried oysters. Our Caesar salad is made with our homemade Cesar dressing...garlicy goodness! And finally, if none of our salads or sandwiches seem like they'd "hit the spot," come in on a Tuesday and enjoy our slow roasted Angus prime rib or a prime rib French dip. We hope to see you soon...

Honestly, I was floored by this place. I chose it for the location - a convenient midway point to meet someone.
It's a welcoming small bar/restaurant. The building and setting is relaxing - takes you out of the frequent, anonymous sameness and congestion we encounter. It was full of locals in mid afternoon.
Our waitress, our drinks, our food...everything was memorably great. I had a martini (perfect) and finger-licking good mussels - literally. I sat there and liked the garlic/butter sauce off each shell. It was like the mussels from small, neighborhood restaurants in the Italian neighborhoods on the East Coast that I grew ip with.
I never had a reason to be in Hercules. Now I do.Helpful 1Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 10, 20241 check-in
This little place was a gem within a Gem of a neighborhood ! Cutest little spot in the cutest neighborhood! Honestly the neighborhood was so great we started looking for a place lol.
The Powder Keg pub was such a cute little spot. We had a really sweet and attentive waitress who was kind. The food was pretty good. I'm all honesty the wings were my favorite they were fire! The clam chowder was a no go for me and I would not recommend ordering it especially if you're used to thick rich chowder. This chowder was just yuk and milky water thin substance. Hard pass.
The burger was pretty good. But them wings thoughhhhhh let me tell you I will be back just for these bad boys! Also we ordered the garlic chicken nuggets and they were actually fire too! The garlic fries too were very delicious.
Even though the chowder was blah everything else was great! Thank you for the good experience!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Feb 2, 2024
Small restaurant but the food and drinks are good. Decided to go here on a Friday night, and it was pretty packed. We had to wait for a table but it wasn't that long maybe 10mins.
We ordered drinks and food; they all turned out pretty good. For small business restaurants the food was really good. Our entire order was cooked to perfections. The mussels were amazing!
Our server was really good too. Got all of our order to us fast and no issues.
Like I said it's a small place and on a Friday night, the tables were packed so was the bar. But they got us seated pretty fast.

This is a good, solid place for casual dining. It's located in a cute neighborhood of residences. There's ample street parking.
I've been here several times and the food was always tasty and portions were good-sized. The fish and chips is a go to with its crunchy batter. The fish is moist and fresh. The fries are okay. I think that the hot fish that placed on the top may tend to get some of the fries a little soft and limp. The mussels in butter and garlic is the only dish that I wouldn't order again. It's messy to eat. Maybe a larger bowl could solve the problem. The fries kept falling off and were overcooked and chewy. My friend had the crab sandwich and said it was very good.
Service is friendly and the food doesn't take long to appear.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dee J.Chicago, IL502128Apr 1, 2024
Wish I took a picture of my plate before I started, the food was good and I definitely cleaned my plate. Service was great and the servers were friendly. It was a little windy outside so we sat inside, the wait was very short, although I hear today was unusual because the wait and line outside is usually long. It's advisable to call ahead of time.

Ok, so this pics are NOT from our Friday night dinner! I forgot to take pics--but they are from a great brunch we had a few weeks ago. The PK, as we call it, is our local haunt. Tonight we had the amazing tuna melt with a side salad (fries are an option) and the fish tacos - grilled (fried is an option). Both were delish as alway! My first time with the tacos and the fish was moist and the salsa spicy--just like I like it! Staff is always friendly and caring. Come and enjoy our local pub--you'll love it!

Thanks for your nice review Cami...see you there soon!
Jul 8, 2018Previous reviewHad a fantastic late afternoon lunch with my Honey and we both loved our burgers (which is a special treat for us!)! He got the San Francisco with shoestring fries and I got the Railroad with onion rings. I asked for no bun and our waitress asked if I wanted a lettuce wrap--yes! The burger was perfectly cooked medium rare, and so flavorful! The fries were hot and crispy, the onion rings were a bit greasy, but they use a light batter and the onion taste shines through. Yum! And the service was awesome! We were created and seated right away, checked on appropriately, and our servers were engaging and delightful. Another great experience at The PK!

I've ordered many many burgers and it's rare that when I take my first bite I hear my inner voice scream how great the burger is!! I had the Cowboy Up burger. Bacon, onion rings, spicy BBQ sauce. Simply perfection!
Full bar if you're interested in beer, wine or cocktails.
Cool hangout nestled in a Hercules neighborhood with great service. Thanks Angela for making our lunch fun and enjoyable!Helpful 2Thanks 3Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jul 15, 2023Updated review
We got food to go last night. We ordered the Zucchini mushroom appetizer, the sliders with 2 burgers and 1 fish, and chicken wings.
Most of the Zucchini mushrooms were okay. A few were doughy and uncooked. I threw them away.
The chicken wings were just okay.
The sliders looked much smaller than they used to be, and the burgers were uncooked in the middle. The fish slider was greasy.
I ended up having to take something for my stomach because of the large amount of grease ingestion.
I hadn't been here in a while and was hoping for a good experience. When I initially called in my order, I was put on hold for a very long time. I eventually hung up and kept trying to call back and couldn't get through for a while. Finally, I was able to place my order, was told it would be 40 minutes, and I'd get a hone call.
The phone call never came. I went in to get my food. No one noticed me. I looked for someone to check in with. It took a bit of time. A guy cleaning tables came over and helped me.
This establishment needs more staff. It is too small for people to have to wait long times and get half cooked food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Hello Cyn. Thanks for your review. I noticed that you've been here a few times before, all with good experiences, except for the two you Yelped about. We're truly sorry with respect to your less-than-expected food...i would've hoped you brought it to your servers attention so that they could rectify it for you then. Again, our deepest apologies; but we look forward to hopefully serving you again soon.
Aug 6, 2016Previous reviewThis must have been an off afternoon at the Powder Keg.
Our orders were not made to our satisfaction.
I ordered the ceasar salad with salmon- light parmesan and no anchovies on top. Ugg! I got plenty of anchovies and parmesan cheese! So did my friend.
Our waiter brought our appetizers and entrees all at the same time. Our table was super crowded. All he could say was,"I put everything in at the same time."
My salad didn't have enough dressing on it.
My friend's crab melt had no taste and there was too much butter on the bread.
The waiter seemed overwhelmed and looked like he needed help.
We brought friends here for the first time. They didn't like the service nir the food. I felt embarrassed because I spoke so well of your restaurant. I usually have a great experience. I'm not sure what happened today :(Oct 16, 2015Previous reviewService was very slow. The young blonde female waitress was constantly stressed out which did not add to our visit.
She was abrupt and impersonal. I haven't seen her before so I'm not sure if she's new or not, but I hope she gets better at waitressing.
I had the fish tacos and the zuchini mushroom appetizer.
It all tasted good. It just took a long time for the order to come up.
I normally like coming here, but not today. I like the more personable waitresses. So only three stars.Aug 13, 2015Previous reviewLast night I ordered the Calamari and the Zucchini and Mushrooms to go. These items costs $8 and $8.50 respectively.
The Calamari equated to two handsful. It was such a small order. Definitely not the size that is served when you order in.
For the other dish, we got 4 stalks of zucchini and 6 half mushrooms for $8.50. Wait! We didn't even get whole mushrooms??? They were cut in half. This has never happened before.
Who was the cook last night?
Normally if I order the zucchini and mushroom there is enough to share with others. This was only enough for one person yet I was charged the full price.
Thankfully the food was decent, but the amount we received for the $18 we paid was not worth it.
I usually enjoy the service and food at the Powder Keg. I did not enjoy this one :(Apr 10, 2015Previous reviewI came for dinner with a friend. We ordered the mushroom and zuchini appetizer. It is deep fried with a tangy white sauce. This dish is always a good way to start off a meal. A waitress once told me that they grow these veggies in a local garden. I am so impressed by that! Great job in locally sourcing food!
I ordered the garlic noodles with shrimp. Now, let me tell you about this dish. Everytime I order it I get a different amount of noodles. Sometimes enough for three. Yesterday's was a one sized portion. You have to love garlic if you eat this. Why? Last night for the first time something strange happened. I smelled of garlic so much that I woke up with my whole room smelling of garlic. My husband says garlic was coming out of my pores! Wow!
The dish was super yummy, but I couldn't finish it all. If you want only a touch of garlic, ask the waitstaff for less. I think I got the king's ransom of garlic put in my dish last night.
I had a glass of Mirrasou Valley's Merlot. The first one was sent back because it tasted like the bottle had been open for a few days. They kindly opened a new bottle right away. The second glass tasted much better.
I keep coming to the Powder Keg because their menu has expanded, their pricing is very reasonable for the area (unlike a nearby restaurant) and their service is great.
They are no longer the best kept secret tucked away in Hercules. The word is out! This place always stays packed at dinner time. I only hope they can find a bigger location for the growing numbers of hungry people. Otherwise, be prepared to wait a while if it is busy. The place is so small that you may be waiting right next to someone's table. I don't know about you, but I don't like people being that close when I'm eating.Mar 7, 2015Previous reviewI am enjoying this place more and more. I call it the local Cheers. Where everybody knows your name! I like that!
I love the people who work here. They aee glad to see you and making your dining experience comfortable.
We had the fried zuchini and mushrooms which were great. This is such a hit. Whatever batter they use has just the right seasonings. We also tried the burger sliders and clam chowder. The sliders were cold, but I was there for a meeting so I let it slide. Ha! All pun intended :)
The clam chowder was chock full of potatoes. I was creamy and hit the spot.
Tell them to hold the bacon if you don't want it sprinkled on top.Feb 8, 2015Previous reviewThe Garlic Noodles!!! Oh my!!! I have had garlic noodles at many fine restaurants and they were not as good as these. They get the garlic taste just right! They are made using spagetti noodles. You can add shrimp. I always order mine with shrimp. They are super garlicky and yummy! You obviously have to like garlic to jam on these delicious noodles! I love my little slice of paradise called 'The Powder Keg'.
The space of the restaurant is small and cozy. So, don't go there if you have a large group. They do have some outdoor seating when the weather is nice.
