Relax, unwind, put you feet up and sip a martini is exactly what you should do when you get to the Portifino.. well its exactly what I did!

My boyfriend and I found this hotel by booking a last minute getaway on Hotwire and we were not disappointed! The hotel is picture perfect especially if you are able to grab a room on the ocean side. The decor is sexy and chic, somewhat reminded me of a fashionable boutique hotel you would expect to find on Ocean Ave in Miami.

If your objective is to get away from all the drama of daily life this is the hotel that can help transport your mind from hectic to heavenly.

I'm in love with this hotel. You know how you sometimes crave a place to hide away and just disappear from the world for a few blissful days? The Portofino is just that place. I'm not sure exactly what it is, I think it's the combination of all the things that makes this hotel more than great.

The waterfront rooms are a must-have. The view, the tranquility, and the joy of watching sail boats go by and seals on floating platforms while enjoying some cheese and a glass of pinot is beyond amazing. It's the kind of stuff that makes you glad you're alive. It's relaxing, and I totally agree with Barry W that if you can't chill at this place, you need drugs.

The rooms are large, well appointment and tastefully decorated in a nautical theme. Very understated but elegant, which in my books equals perfect. One of my favorite things to do here is to get on their free bikes (yes, it's free for hotel guest!) and head down the strand. We got on bikes almost everyday while we were there, and biked all the way to Venice Beach, with lunch and shopping stops in Hermosa and Manhattan beach. Back and forth, it's about 23 miles... Makes for a wonderful vacation day.

We also rented kayaks on the second day. One of my favorite aspect about kayaking here is that you get to go through the marina and whoo and ahhh at the beautiful sail boats. The pier is also but a stroll away if you want to rejoin the world out there or get some food. Talking about food, please do make it a point to head over to their affiliated restaurant, the Baleen (see my review of it here: http://www.yelp.com/bi...) for dinner or breakfast at least once to complete your Portofino experience.

I will be back.

This hotel is so relaxing!  We had a room that looked out over the bay and we watched the sun set every night on our own private deck.  They have bikes you can use to cruise down the beach and a great restaurant/bar in case you don't feel like going out.  This is one of those hotels that really pays attention to the details, which makes your stay even better.

I would go back here in a heartbeat and highly recommend it!

I stayed here once and was very pleased with the room and the view. If you got an ocean view then there is nothing to complain about. I definetly enjoyed the experience and was pleasantly surprised about the rooms. They are very well done with upscale material/fabric. I also had brunch at the restaurant overlooking the marina. The brunch was very good and the service was great.

I stayed their a few months back and found it to be a really relaxing experience.  We had an ocean side room and could sit and watch the sea lions fight for barge space during the day and watch PV light up at night.  The view is amazing, it's supposed to be the only ocean front hotel in LA so I suppose that makes sense.  The restaurant (Baleen) was also very nice and I found the outdoor fireside couches to be a nice place to enjoy a cocktail.  I'd previously been to a Mother's Day brunch in their ballroom and the view from there is amazing.  I can't think of a nicer location and there are plenty of nearby attractions in walking or biking distance.

One of the most disappointing hotel experiences I've ever had, and way over priced. I spent three nights here for a wedding and I will explain our issues:

Check in: Over the phone, the reservation desk said I would have a room adjoining to another couple. Upon check-in, that room wasn't available so I was given another room. No problem. I went to my room, but the keys didn't work so the bell-hop let me in the door. I unpacked, showered up, and looked out on a beautiful ocean view. Ahh, life is good.
I walked down to get a new set of keys, but those keys didn't work either. I went down for a THIRD time, and the gentlemen told me he gave me the wrong room. My room was indeed the room adjoining to our friends. The same one that wasn't available upon check-in.
I told the front desk that I would stay in my new room since my stuff was unpacked, I had already showered, and it had a nice ocean view. He told me, you didn't pay for the ocean view so I need you to move. I told him, "That's you're problem, not mine." After several minutes of the front desk telling me I need to move,  I ended up moving to a room on the first floor....with an ocean view. I will also add they gave the wrong room to TWO OTHER people in our wedding party.

Other notable things:
- I understand we're at the beach, but the pool is terrible
- Wifi service went down multiple times
- We witnessed the maintenance guy scraping ice with his hand that went into the water jug in the lobby. This is the same jug that all guests drink from when they arrive
- The room doors slam shut and shake the rooms next door
- We found red ants in our room
- Hotel bikes are old and rusty

Bottom line is this hotel is way overpriced. We paid over $300 a night, and got the service of a Super 8. Yes. The ocean view make this place much more enjoyable, but I'd recommended spending your money somewhere else.

Nice view of the ocean, not particularly a fan of the harbor sailboat view. A bit dated, but good for conferences. To get some food, I'd suggest taking a couple block walk to the Cheesecake Factory which has a large menu and good food for a chain.

Our stay at the Portofino was phenomenal. The staff was so accommodating and cordial and hooked us up phat. It definitely helped that we came for gobble gobble day though and initially utilized Orbitz paying a third of the normal rate.

Be pleased:
- The view from the oceanside rooms is just spectacular.
- It's on a marina!
- Never before has any architect under the sun manage to design hallways that appear so endless without using mirrors.
- There is a common area that people actually lounge in.
- I'm writing this on their free wi-fi.
- Barking seals! The rooms come with earplugs.

It's so conducive to relaxing and taking it easy. Borrow a free bike and tackle the miles of trails, drag your feet through the sand on the nearby beach. Even a couple of days here will rejuvenate from the most frustrating of travels.
Plan an escape. You know you deserve one.

If there were ever a place I'd peg as Ideal Stomping Grounds for Old Men Wearing Monacles, this would be it.

I didn't see anyone walking in wearing safari gear & carrying an elephant gun through the lobby, though that wouldn't have been shocking.

I didn't see anyone donning a green blazer signifying a past victory of The Masters, stepping out of their Jag-U-ar & passing the keys off to the parking attendant , though I half expected to.

I didn't see retired C.E.O.s sipping Tom Collinses out of crystal highball glasses in the bar & while boasting of their sport fishing exploits in phony Queen's English, & that fact surprised me.

All in all, for how nice, beautiful & expensive the Portofino is, I didn't see ANYTHING remotely cliche, or hilarious for that matter. Whoever decorated this place did a fine job, too. The nautical theme throughout was a constant reminder that you were, indeed, at a marina.

My biggest complaint was the total lack of old men wearing captain's hats. That said, five stars for the Portofino.

Love this place.  My boyfriend and I live near Hollywood and wanted to get away for our anniversary.  So we spent the weekend at the Portofino.  It was amazing.  We had a waterfront room and spent the evenings sipping drinks and eating room service on the patio.  They also had free bike rentals and we took the bikes out for a spin and realized that only two blocks was being ambitious, but biking to El Segundo was just a little out of our league.  But thank goodness they have a jacuzzi in which we could let our tired muscles recuperate at the end of the day.

Now, what did put a little damper on the weekend, was that while I was in the shower, maintenance came up and told me that our shower was causing a leak in the room below us:  So we had we had two options, we could move into a smaller room for the second night, or not shower.  We chose the smaller room and received the second night for free as well as vouchers for breakfast.  It worked for us.

the Portofino is a special little south bay gem ...
it's gotta bed & breakfast charm but a Marriot size.
i stayed here for a week while getting house repairs.

ever stay at "Argonaut" in SF (Fisherman's Wharf)?
well Portofino sort of reminds me of that hotel feel ...
the sounds of seals meeting on a floating platform,
nautica-style room dressings, blue & white paint,
spacious marble-tiled bathroom, comfortable
balcony for two to chill, plus a fine restaurant.

if you cannot chill at Portofino, you need drugs.
it is a natural sedative and esthetically pleasing.
they even offer rate specials on 3-day holiday wknd.

What a wonderful place for a hideaway!  We had some special which included a bottle of port and a box of Godiva Truffles...We loved the hotel and found it to be very warm and inviting!  Make sure you ask what specials they offer...the people in the next room paid 150$ more than we did for the same room!

This is the only part of my otherwise perfect wedding day that I regret! Upon check-in the reception staff was totally rude to us, and almost didn't let us check in despite the fact that we already paid for our room. We had forgotton our credit cards(yes our mistake) for the additional charges, but we were still in our wedding clothes for goodness sake. I couldn't believe that they were going to turn us away! The manager finally straightened out the matter, but by that point I was practically in tears. The room was nothing special, and the people above us partied on their balcony until 4am. Honestly, I've never complained about noise to hotel before, but I did that night. And they did nothing about it. And no apologies either. I should have listened to the negative reviews on Trip Advisor. Oh well, I'll never go back.

A wonderful getaway place.  Everyone was genuinely friendly and helpful, the accommodations were beautiful and immaculately maintained, the ocean view was breathtaking and our experience, totally wonderful.  Tons of interesting restaurants within walking distance, clean ocean water to swim or paddle in - we could not have hoped for anything more.  See the pix and then go!
