When the owner of the Petite Retreat returned my call I was really impressed by her professionalism. Then I was struck by how friendly and warm she was. She seemed like a good friend and not in that fake way people are. She just seems like good people.
So I booked my wife an appointment - The Ultimate Massage.
My wife is a certified massage therapist so she's a good judge of massage technique. I drop her off at the appointed time and go search out a beer and some vintage clothing.
I show up promptly at the appropriate time to pick her up and the wife comes out looking totally relaxed.
Now, we have this secret signal tipping method worked out because I once gave a huge tip to a woman that gave my wife the worst wax job she had ever had. I had no clue she had almost been mutilated and like a moron I gave this incompetent idiiiot a sweet tip.
So If she signals 1 finger the massage was OK and the tip is 10% and if the massage was great it's 2 fingers or 20%.
She signals a very emphatic 2 fingers. Later she told me she had an awesome time and was very pleased with the massage.
I even booked one the next weekend, my first massage in years and just as promised it was awesome.
The owner tells me she's going to expand her mens massage offerings and I look forward to becoming a regular customer. -

I had an awesome Valentine's day gift idea: couple's spa! Unfortunately, the idea came to me about a week before Valentine's weekend and I called around franticly only to find everything was booked for the next two weekends. I saw a few reviews of this place by searching "couple's spa Houston" on Google. The reviews were positive, but since they weren't off of yelp, I was skeptical. Desperate, I called anyway. The voicemail informed me that to ensure the privacy of the patrons, they don't take calls during a session and will call back. I liked how that sounded already. I left a message but didn't really expect anyone to call and practically gave up on the idea. An hour later, my prayers were answered when she said they had a spot available on the Saturday following Valentine's Day. Perfect!!!
The name of this establishment describes the setting perfectly. Its pamphlet informs me that "[they] have transformed a charming cottage built in the early 1900's (1929 to be exact -- I asked) into an exclusive, beautiful retreat. While relaxing in [their] spa, you can expect superior service as we never have more than 2 guests at a time (unless it is your own private event!)." Everything about that description is accurate, and I will explain why below.
This place wasn't too hard to find; yet, one would never expect to find such a charming and serene little place tucked away in back corner of the Montrose neighborhood. We walked up the front door, unsure if we have arrived at the right place, until a small, discreet sign reaffirmed us. We were warmly greeted by our masseuses, the aromatic scent of massage oil, and the coziness of the spa itself. We sat down a little bit as introductions and instructions were made, paperworks were filled out, and then we were quickly swept away to our retreat from realty for the next 3 hours.
The 3 hours felt like a blissful eternity. My boyfriend and I were all alone, except for the 2 masseuses and the esthetician who performed our facials. I felt like royalty. We had a private room in the back where we undressed and put our stuff away. Linked to it was a small bathroom, and the room in the front had 2 massage beds in which we received our services side to side. We were treated to 1 hour of massage, 1 hour of facials, and 1 hour of Japanese foot treatment. The masseuses were excellent. They applied just the right amount of pressure, and I can feel the knots in my back melt away. During each treatment, we could get up and use the restroom or drink water as we needed to in the back rooms while they prepared for the next round of spa treatments. I got my facial first while my boyfriend got the Japanese foot treatment. I thought the esthetician smelled really great....and then I realized it's because of all the masques and lotions she used to apply to my face! That made me happy. This was the most serene as I fell asleep for most of it....lol. Finally, I received my Japanese foot treatment. They first massage your feet and calves, then they use various sizes of hot stones to trigger the pressure points of your foot. They will put the hot stones between your toes (I still have no idea how they stayed on...I could only figure out by touch because my eyes were covered), so be sure to tell them if it's too hot and they will accommodate. I did come out feeling like a million bucks, and we ended the sweet occasion with complimentary champagne (you can also request wine).
The services were most excellent and the staff was very professional, nice, and responsive. One of the masseuse told me that you can come with 2 pairs of couples together, and they can put all 4 people in the same room if you'd like, and you can get whatever spa "packages" you want. I loved the privacy, the place was incredibly cute, and I thought the whole experience was exceptional. My boyfriend and I will definitely return, either separately or together! If you're looking for a getaway without leaving town, this is it.

After owning a salon and spa for 5 years, I decided to specialize in Couple's spa treatments. The idea of this concept spa has exploded over the past few years and we are know for celebrating special events. Even though we only cater to one couple at a time, we still were voted 11th in Citysearch Best of Category for "best couple's spa in Houston". We are honored and proud to be serving and relaxing Houstonians for the past 10 years.
