After meeting a very sweet hedgehog at a science convention, I fell in love and decided my world would be incomplete without one.   I did the reading, got a cage, and got ready to welcome a prickly ball of love into my classroom.

When I went into the Pet Shop, the owner and I discussed hedgehogs for a while and he made many vaild points and convinced me this was not my pet.

Instead, he took the time to introduce me to degus, cute little guys (and girls) from South America.  I adopted two degus, and they have been amazing pets for the past two years.   Every other pet shop I have been do has not carried the food, and if they do they say, "yeah, I've seen pictures of those things..."

Bottom line, the people who work here know what they're talking about and have great animals and the things they need.  The owner saved me about $250.00 and I couldn't be happier with my pets.

I've been there once or twice and everyone giving bad reviews are idiots. Animals smell, it's true. That's why this shop smells. Have you seen how small it is? Of course the smell is going to seem more extreme in close quarters.

Petco and Petsmart both get their animals from questionable places and take horrid care of them because they don't know what's what. This guy does. He and his family love animals and take very good care of them.

Oh no! Rodents kept together in cages? Why on earth would anyone keep social, flocking animals together in a cage? That is so terrible [/sarcasm]. How many people buy one rat, one mouse, or one guinea pig and keep them alone for their entire lives? Too many. The same with birds. These are all social creatures and they don't mind sharing the space. A pet store is a temporary situation and they can't give each and every animal lots of space. Have you seen how overcrowded Petco's animals are?

The dogs are family pets and are all friendly, there is no liability there. The selection is small, but this is a small small store in the middle of Allston! What do you people expect? It's a small family owned business. The family knows their stuff and cares for the animals. Sorry your virgin eyes can't stand the sight of poop in the small animal cages. I have news for you, don't ever come by my house. My guinea pig can cover the bottom of the cage in it by himself in a single day. Small pets have smaller stomachs and have to eat smaller meals more often. This means more waste.

Great store, and they know their stuff.

One afternoon, tragedy struck and my boyfriend's poor fish Kingsley was no longer with us. Saddened, we did what any normal American couple would do: we sought to procure a replacement after we promptly gave Kingsley a proper burial at sea. Or out to sea, as it were.

Having some things to care of over in Allston, we stopped here to check out the fishies. Their bowls and tanks seemed relatively clean and there was quite a selection. After some debate, we settled on a very colorful fish with big spikey fins. We even got him a hermit crab statue to keep him company. He is one happy little fish.

Aside from the fact of how cute our new friend is, I'd have to agree with most of the claims below that the store is somewhat desheveled, there is hardly anyone to help and the disorganized shelves are coated with dust. The smell, however, is nothing more than the smell of a standard pet store and the animals (hampsters, gerbals, birds, chinchillas, ferrets and fish) seemed to be well attended to in clean cages and clean water.

For fish rescure missions and new swimming friends, The Pet Shop came through. I just think the store itself could be better kept!

0 Stars. This place should be shut down.

Large numbers of animals are crammed into tiny cages.   It's  awful.  Not to mention the guys who work here are dicks.

Please don't give this place your business...  There are lots of great shelters around here where the animals are actually cared for!

I would give it 0 stars if i could!
I asked for the recycled paper litter and they charged me 17.99.
ok, my friend said it was a good type of litter, so i thought "ok, maybe it is worth it". then i walked to the star market to buy some groceries and saw the same exact litter for $8.29! what???
ok, i can understand the difference in price of 2-3 bucks, but 10$! R u kidding me???
Never ever again i will show up in that store! they are ripping people off in such tough times!!!! spend ur hard earned money elsewere!

I also wish there was a 0 star option (Yelp, how about it?) for this store.

I've been in here a few times because my boyfriend used to have a lizard and this was the only T accessible place to get live crickets. My friends and I call it "The Sketchy Pet Store" because it's such a disaster.

The place smells disgusting, and pet stores shouldn't smell disgusting- they should smell vaguely like pets, but no more. (Think about it: if your supermarket smells like food, that's one thing, but when it smells like rotting, that's a sign you should shop elsewhere.) The store was infested with flies, everything was dirty, and the animals definitely looked like they were not well kept. The two I remember best were the old bulldog in the store, who appeared to have an untreated eye infection and was acting ill and lethargic, and the kittens in the window who were cuddled in their litter box from the cold.

I've also noticed tons of pets I'm pretty sure are illegal, and one of my friends thought that one of the parrots that was in the bird area is of an endangered species.

I really, really wish this place would get shut down! It's disgusting and appalling that animals could be kept like this. They must be paying someone off to still be open. A small pet store that's T accessible  is invaluable in Allston, but this one is reprehensible. Do not give them your business!

The MSPCA Shelter in JP, the Animal Rescue League in the South End, and the City of Boston shelter in Roslindale all have adoptable pets for comparable or cheaper prices, and their pets get routine medical care and often come with an appointment for follow-up care.

Notice that all of the 5-star reviews of this store are from members with fewer than 10 reviews...they're definitely plants.

Unlike previous reviewers, I was not overwhelmed by the smell in here. It just smelled like a pet store to me, which meant it smelled like animals. Perhaps I'm impervious to such scents because I'm from Ohio and therefore used to smelling farms? Who knows. Anyway, I couldn't pay much attention to the smell when there were adorable animals right by the entrance. A male Newfoundland (small for its breed, the owner told me he only weighs about 110 lbs.--a runt!), a black and white cat, and a female Bulldog can usually be found lounging right in front of the door. As they're extremely friendly (and lazy), I highly suggest giving up a few minutes to pet and coddle them.

On to the store! I found the layout cluttered, yes, but in a charming way. This is a store that wants you to take your time wandering around exploring--it's not an "in and out" kind of place. I was fascinated by the degus and the pygmy hedgehogs (omg I want one!), and as far as I could see the cages were really clean with fresh bedding and everything. And there were only maybe 3 animals to a cage. Now maybe I came in right after clean up time, but for all future visitors who may encounter dirty cages: small animals poop A LOT and it's entirely impossible (and impractical) to change the bedding more than once every couple days. So if you go in there and see "dirty" cages and think "Ew, gross! How inhumane!" you should probably walk away from the small pets because you're clearly not ready to have one.

I came in here to get a betta fish, and he's doing quite well in his new home. There's a good supply of fish things, although clearly it's not as extensive as what you'd find at, say, Petco or Petsmart. But I was more than satisfied and had a lovely chat with the owner who told me how he came to own all three of the dogs that wander the store. He was extremely knowledgeable and I could have listened to him talk about animals for hours, but I had to get my fish home!

For most of the people who've reviewed this place negatively, I have a question: do you have any idea what goes on behind the polished  doors at places like Petco and Petsmart? If you did you would understand why I much prefer this place with all its smells and poopy cages to the clean and shiny set up of a commercial pet store chain. I've seen *plenty* of foul looking cages in those kinds of places, so I don't know what you're complaining about. Also, animals like dogs and cats are social animals and most often prefer to be housed together. So while some of their accommodations in this may seem cramped to you, the puppies and kitties are much happier cramped than lonely.

And the biggest reason to shop at The Pet Shop as opposed to a big chain? PUPPY MILLS. As has been previously stated, all the dogs and cats for sale here are rescued animals or have been turned over because their owners cannot care for them any longer. The ones that look sick? They probably are sick and *were sick* when the owner received them: it takes time to nurse animals back to health! You don't see sick animals at chains because they don't put them out front for you to see! Those adorable puppies you see at Petco and Petsmart? Yeah, chances are they came from a puppy mill in Pennsylvania where their mother has never set found on solid ground.

Whereas the teenagers working at chain stores can't usually tell you *anything* about the specific animals they're selling, The Pet Shop owner can tell you where all his animals come from, the history of the breed, what they eat, their common behaviors, EVERYTHING.

Be a responsible pet owner and do your research before you criticize. Store appearance means diddly shit when it comes to the quality of a pet store.

I came in here one afternoon hoping to be like that lil kid at the pet shop ooooo-ing and ahhhhhing at the animals in here, but that was not the case. Instead, I walked in here and was disgusted.

Yes, pet shops generally smell bad because well yeh, there are animals. That I am not denying. However, this place was disgusting. The store was such a clusterfuck in every way possible. The layout of the store was disorganized. And if you walk towards the back where most of the animals are kept, you will find that the ratio of animals to cage is absurd. There was one cage that I was looking at, where there were probably 20 mice or rats, I'm not sure, packed into a cage. You can literally see them stacked on top of each other, where they can't even move. Most of the animals were sickly looking. Why would anyone want to purchase a pet that is not only sick, but could possibly die within weeks of taking it home? Can you imagine having a kid and giving them a pet to only die a few weeks later? That would break my heart!  Not only because of the child, but also because of the pet.

What this store needs to do is shut down for several weeks and clean up their act. Forget about trying to make money and bring these animals back to life. Clean up the store. All the cages were filled with feces at the bottom of their cages and it didn't even appear to be fresh feces, but rather been sitting there for awhile. Can you imagine you were locked up in a room by yourself with nothing else but your own urine and feces? Wouldn't that depress the CRAP outta you?

For those of you "defending" the owner of this shop - shame on you. Put things in perspective and imagine what it is like for those animals. Talk about animal cruelty.

P.S. As much as I like dogs, not everyone is a fan of dogs. Having that St. Bernanrd at the front entrance is probably not the best of ideas. Especially if someone was to walk in with a small child who might be deathly afraid of dogs. And to let him walk around the store?! Isn't that considered a liability?

I always walk by this place when I go to karate, and it must be some sick kind of curiosity that I've wanted to come her, especially because of all the horrendous reviews here.

Well, today I came, and needless to say, everyone was right.

First, the smell.  OMG seriously, I probably puked in my mouth a little.  No, wait, a lot.  ALL of the cages were DIRTY.  There were these 3 poor little kittens, and they were in this tiny and dirty cage, and the only thing they had to play with were their FECES.  FECES.  I wanted to cry.  They looked SO unhealthy, their eyes were red, and their bodies were bony and they just didn't look healthy at all.  Jess had mentioned that they looked too young to even be away from their mother.  I really wanted to cry.  I wanted to steal them and take them home with me and take care of them.

They had this back room, and one of the employees wouldn't let me go in with my backpack.  I had to leave it behind.  Um, I am not leaving my laptop alone kthx.  But there were two huge snakes so I was ok with not going in.

This place needs to go away, they don't know how to take care of their animals.  No place should smell that bad.  If you want a textbook definition of animal cruelty, then just stop by the Pet Shop.

I will never enter this store again. In fact I might even deliberately walk on the opposite side of the street the next time I am in the area. The owner of this store needs to think long and hard about what he is doing to these animals. Either stop selling animals, or stop selling supplies, because this store is too small for both. The cages for the cats alone were over-cramped.

Three 6 month old cats living together in one cage (in the front of the store) cramped with food, water, and litter box (the food and litter were RIGHT next to each other) is not acceptable. Four 2 month old kittens in the back were in a slightly bigger cage, but one kitten had pink eye, and didn't seem to be treated.

Oh, and they were charging $200 + tax /cat not including spaying or rabies shots.

The urine smell is unbelievably overwhelming, and the store looks dingy, unclean, and cluttered. Not an acceptable environment for animals. The sales girl that was there didn't know which cats were males or females, she had to ask the owner in the back for info. The owner should be ashamed to be running this "business" regardless about how much he knows about animals or in what manner he talks to people.

I seriously had to leave before I either cried or yelled at the owner. Just pathetic.

but at least they don't take full-breds from puppy mills. all pups and kits are rescue kids. there's something to be said for that.

somebody give them a hose or a sponge or something. maybe they could send that big-ass dog to allston car wash..

I  bought my beloved rabbit from this place. I didn't know at the time, but she was living in awful conditions. Her feet were stained with urine, and her diet was incomplete. She was placed it the same cage as an adult rabbit that was dominating and probably abusive to the baby bunnies there.

I used to go into this place every few months because I liked to see the rabbits. I was shocked as the same animals stayed there, looking sicker and sicker. My significant other and I contemplated buying a rabbit that had been there for seven months -- and then giving him to a shelter that would take care of him.

The last straw was when I went to visit the rabbits. I picked up a cute little baby doe that looked like my own rabbit. (In retrospect, she probably was related -- where do they get their animals?) She was too thin, her feet were stained with urine, and worst of all, she had sores on her skin. This innocent little doe was having medical issues that needed to be addressed immediately; she should not have been around the other animals or in public. I told the owner, and he claimed he would check it out. I don't believe him.

I don't know what to do with this place. I hope it goes out of business for the sake of the animals. They deserve better.

By the way, it is very shady that they prohibit videotaping. I reckon they are trying to keep the local news from doing an expose. But newsprint requires no photos....

What an awful awful awful place. It doesn't even deserve one star.

Way too many animals per cage. Dirty unkempt cages. To tell you the truth, I have to stop myself from really thinking about it because it absolutely breaks my heart.

We overheard the owner (or whoever was at the desk) go on about animals as "little shits." My friend even heard him talking about how he doesn't feed one of his dogs because he doesn't like it.

I wanted to take the animals away, particularly the bunnies who I found crammed under empty cages/boxes/a mess. I couldn't buy any animals knowing that it would fund this lowlife's pure and simple greed and disrespect towards animals. Also, knowing that it would only let him buy more (from god knows where?) animals to replace them.

Please, let this place go out of business.

for all of the people who are horrified by this place, I have something more horrific to tell you.

I lived in Allston starting around 89/90, and the shop was there then (across the street, however), and it sounds as though nothing has changed.

Hopefully those of you with legitimate complaints have reported it, for whatever good that will do.

I've only been in here a few times when I had to pick up some worms for a friend's fish that I was taking care of over the summer.  The man who was in the shop was nice and helpful.  I really liked petting the three dogs (2 bulldogs and a Newfoundland) who were hanging out in there.  They were very sweet.  The big issue that I ran into was finding any place to park my car  since I was driving in to feed the aforementioned fish.  There was definitely a pet store smell to the place, and the set-up was a bit crowded, but I chocked that up to having to fit so many things into such a small space.  That's what happens in the city I suppose.  The friendly dogs made up for a lot in my book.

As someone who has searched high and low for adoptable Degus, the fact that this place has them is enough to qualify for 5 stars.

As for the pet shop itself, I think that Anna and Claudia make good points. This isn't the place you would come if you can't accept the fact that animals poop and smell and get sick and fight and all the the negative aspects the big chain stores hide so well to earn their cash.

Yes, the shop is a bit shabby and cluttered, yes it smells like animals in there (duh, it's an animal shop, for heavens sake!), and yes, I do believe that the animals aren't in the best condition that they could be, but hey, this "best condition" might only be achievable without the presence of the human race! Who knows?

The guy who runs the shop (there were two people bald with glasses, I'm guessing the older one is the one who is in charge) is quite knowledgeable, compared to the lady at Petco who was like, "you have a WHAT?" when I said that I had Degus.
He seems to really care for animals and his shop, and takes time to answer every question.
Also, the pet food section has special Degu pellets, I haven't been able to find those at the chain stores.  That's definitely a plus.

This pet shop seems to be fitted to my needs.
If you're not the everyday dog and cat only type of person, I would recommend it.

Missing the point!

Yes, this place is crowded, and yes, it costs a little bit more than the impersonal, bland mega-stores like Petco.

However, the guy who runs The Pet Shop (the bald guy with the glasses, I can't remember his name, I'll call him The Dude) knows everything about animals. Seriously, EVERYTHING. I have turtles, and he diagnosed exactly what was wrong with one of them before I decided to take him to Angell Memorial because I wanted a "medical opinion" (they ended up treating the symptoms and not the cause, and I Should have listened to the bald guy!)

Basically, if you have an exotic pet or fish, The Dude knows everything about them. He won't sell you something if he thinks you will be doing the wrong thing for your pet. The Dude may be a little stand-offish, but pick his brain if you have a question, and you will not be disappointed.

This store also offers a good selection of fish and reptile supplies, though you may have to dig in order to find them! This is not a store for people who want to breeze in and buy some catfood, or find the perfect jewel-encrusted carrier for their yappy little dog. However, if you want sound advice, exotic pet equipment, or the odd strange animal (I've never found hairless rats anywhere else ever!), it's a great experience.

I recently gave up my fishtank (traveling too much to take care of it properly) and I can only speak for fish but I think  the poster who said the owner knows everything about pets was right.  I used to find I was explaining to people at Petco how to take care of fish.  The Pet Shop guy always steered me right.  As for the smell, it's normal pet store smell.  If you had a bunch of pets in your house it would smell the same.  I think some stores have better vents or use more chemicals to kill odors.

The place is small, smelly, and ridiculously cramped. Everything in Boston is a little narrower or smaller in space, but it's almost impossible to walk in the aisles if there's another person examining the merchandise. I don't have too much experience with pet shops, but I've been inside PetCos and marvel at the amount of space and cleanliness of their stores.

I suspected things were overly priced, and these reviews confirm it. The manager/owner is a little creepy, but nice. Personally I would have never come here on my own, but my friend needed food for her pet turtle and for some reason she insisted I go here instead of the PetCo by CambridgeSide Galleria.

Brittany S. hits it on the head. Looking around you have to wonder where they get the animals and how the place is still in business. If you have a car, just brave the roads and find another pet store.

Super easy to get to (Harvard Ave stop on the B/Green line).

Reminds me of the Ma & Pa pet stores from when I was growing up. The smell of aquariums, birds, rodent cages, etc. Not very clean inside either. For those used to Petco, Petsmart and the like, this place looks dirty as all hell, but before those kinds of super-pet-chains existed, this is what most pet shops looked like 2 decades ago.

And if their prices are a $1 or 2 more than the mega-stores, it's for a reason - they don't have the bulk buying power to sell those supplies at a lower price.

It is really, really hard for me to write this review. Painful. I am not a fan of this place. For many reasons.
As many have mentioned, it smells very bad in here. Yes, when you have a lot of animals in one space, it will smell. And that is natural. But, this is not the smell I speak of. Say you go to the MSPCA shelter. It smells like cats and dogs in there right? But at the same time it smells clean.  Like it isn't dirt and feces AND animal smell, but just the animal smell.  That is okay. At the Pet Shop though, it is dirtiness, AND animal smell.
Okay, the most heartbreaking thing. I am ready to type it. There was a small cage holding 3 kittens.  These kittens looked no more than one month old.  They should NOT have been without their mother.  The cage was small, extremely dirty and with no toys.  Because they had no toys, they were playing with the feces in their litter box.  Also, they looked very unhealthy.  Skinny and bony and there eyes were saggy and red rimmed. I seriously almost cried.  For the other animals they have there (many rodents, bunnies, snakes etc...) many were in crowded cages or dirty cages.  There were so many animals crammed into this store that it was ridiculous. In between all the cages are the products they sell.  Food and what not.  The whole place is extremely crowded. I wanted to buy all of the animals here and save them.
And look, I don't buy some of the other reviews about how much this store cares about animals.  If you cared, first off, you wouldn't have this store to try to cram as many animals in here as you could.  Because there are so many, I am sure it is impossible for them to keep every cage clean. That makes sense. So, if you can't keep animals clean, safe, and loved, then maybe you shouldn't have them.
I was so heartbroken after leaving this place. I can't even tell you.

Have to agree...kinda sketchy.  I went today for the second time ever because I heard they had degus and wanted to see (for shame, I know).  And I was sad.  The degus, like any other pet store rodent, were all cramped together.  "So don't go in a pet store," you say.  Fair.  But whether or not I visit and get sad has nothing to do with whether animal-cramming is good.

The staff had brought their dogs in with them that day.  I noticed that the bulldog lounging by the door had momma-size nipples.  Hmmm...

The young mice had spiky coats, and some rats and gerbils and had that red stress-crust arount their eyes.  Also, I'd expect a pet store to smell a little, but this place was just plain hot and poorly ventilated.  It was only low 70s outside, but the rats in the back were doing that "uhh...I'm so hot...I'ma lie on my back like I'm dead" thing.  A particularly fat one had a turd-sized open sore by his penis.  (No, it was not a stuck-on turd.  I've seen plenty of those before.)  I wanted to alert the guy who was busy feeding reptiles (hey, look, a glass snake...), but I figured what with the stringent "no photography" policy, I probably wasn't going to get much of a response.  I suppose he was python food.  Sigh.

So why am I bothering with the second star?  Well...you DO get a chance to see a lot of neat animals...just make sure you leave empty-handed.

For the record: I overheard reptile man describing the degus as members of the rabbit family.  They've been reclassified with caviomorph rodents based on DNA sequencing.  Aw...like guinea pigs!

OK, I may have spoken too soon. When I brought Bam Bam home she was in great shape, but after about a week she got one of the typical kitty colds that can happen when animals are housed together.  The vet said it wasn't the store's fault if she was OK when we got her, and she was fine. He wouldn't vaccinate her the first time I brought her because she had a slight fever. Also had goopy eyes and was sneezing. The eyes were the worst, the respiratory issues were minor compared to what can happen. Apparently this illness can be deadly in baby animals (they have tiny air passages). She gave it to my full grown kitty too, and putting the eye ointment in 2 cats was not fun. However, they recovered in about 10 days (7-21 is the norm). I think that I may have over reacted when she first started sneezing, but she wasn't THAT sick.
Have not had an issue since. Bam is into everything and in that chasing tail getting into everything phase.  She is healthy, active, and totally obnoxious.
I wouldn't necessarily avoid this store but ask questions about who the cat was housed with and if they have observed any symptoms like the ones I described. They have a 1 month return policy, but I just couldn't bring her back, she had become my baby.

Dark, sad, smelly and crowded.  I need a prozac for my soul and a clothespin for my nose to shop there

Place is kinda sad and makes you wonder where they are getting the animals. Most of the birds look unhealthy and have some bald spots. The rodents look all right and the reptiles are OK but the whole place smells bad and is really hot. I wouldn't say these are the best conditions. I usually like the smaller pet stores but this one seems pretty ghetto. I dunno if getting an animal here is a good idea because they look like they might die within a couple months. Maybe I'm wrong though. This is just the impression I got from the place.

Where else in Allston can you go chill with macaws?  We all secretly love the smell of birds and aquariums.  Go here to get fish, hamsters, or finches or to just go hang in the back room with the huge uncaged birds.

Everytime I've ventured in I have gawked at how uncomftable the animals are. It smells, the pets live in there own filth and I would not be surprised if this place was the subject of a FOX-25 news expose on cruelity to animals. I personally would never patronize this store.

hm...
i have to say that this is my favorite pet store in boston! i have been going to this shop since i was a freshman at BU and was terrified of the shop owner. Now, 8 years later, i am thrilled when i get the chance to make it there and talk to Jim.
i read over the reviews of the pet shop, thus far and was saddened by the experiences that people have had there. most of the animal there are NOT from breeders but are rescues. the owner treats all of the animals with the utmost respect, as i am sure that you realize that some of the recues were harmed in there adopted homes and need treatment which he provides.
i stop into the pet shop for crickets or sometimes just to chat. jim has sold me several of my pets including a pygmy hedgehog and a leopard tortoise. interestingly enough, when i wanted one animal in particular, jim talked me out of it (costing himself a sale of almost $500) and gave reasons why it may not be a good choice.
i called the shop once when my leopard tortoise was bleeding from a hurt beak. they told me to bring him in and talked me through how to get him healthy again. the wealth of knowledge at this store is unparalleled!
my point is, instead of being on a soapbox about the apparent mistreatment of animals (what other writers alluded to as "calling animals little shits" and the person at the front desk saying that they were not going to feed their dog....come on, it might have been sarcasm?!) why not actually talk to the people at the desk and ask them questions. talk about the animals they have in the store, the reptiles in the back, the birds, his dogs...whatever you like, instead of simply judging.
i give the pet shop 5 stars for location, convenience, product selection/guarantee, and for the ability to answer any question about any animal that i could possibly have.

This place is HORRIBLE. Disgusting, cruel, overpriced-how this place stays in business is beyond me. it DOES NOT DESERVE EVEN ONE STAR! It reeks. It's overheated (no AC). All of the items are at least $2 overpriced (compared to PetCo). And the poor animals. Overcrowded, dirty cages filled with sickly animals (sickly as in tumors, missing eyes or legs). I know many people have complained; sadly they remain open. PLEASE don't shop here until conditions get better.
