Why hasnt anyone commented on the fact that the owner, Steve, takes a ton of care to offer only local, fresh, organic ingredients? I love their mindful approach.
Just yesterday I went in and was BLOWN AWAY by the special. It was a much-heartier take on a Banh Mi...but made with venison flank steak! To die for. Even if it doesn't make it to the permanent menu I will definitely keep coming back. -
Review from nik o.
Kind of a limited menu but what they do offer, they do really well. I opted for the hammer and pickle, which is more than "just a Cuban" because everything down to the pickles seemed house made. Like everywhere else in Portland, they seem to strive more for quality than speed, but I'm not complaining.
Crusty bread, juicy pork loin, ham and gooey cheese was made even better with the house made hot sauce the cook brought over with my sandwich. The Tootsie roll....yeah I didn't really get it... but the little brown bag of fresh chips that comes with every sandwich was a great bonus.
I'm really happy that nothing at the Saturday market was appealing, or I never would've happened upon this place while trying to remember where I parked. The area seemed a little sketchy and I probably wouldn't go there at night, but I'm sheltered so maybe its just me. -

Great sandwich shop with excellent service. I had the Cuban sandwich and a cup of soup. It was perfect for a wet Portland day. I will definitely be back.

This place was a great find, the menu is relatively simple, sandwiches, sides, etc. The restaurant has a very green theme, and actively composts and produces low waste.
The vegetarian menu items are really great tasting and not a fake out! The frys are $3.00 for a large amount of the, we ate less then 20% of them, we got them to go and gave them to a homeless person later on.
The place fills up a lunch, but they had enough seating in the restaurant. Part of how it doesn't cost so much is that they don't do table service except for bringing you your dine in food. The drink selection is a bit small, but they offer water for self-serv. The place is great for groups under 8 people eating together, if your more then 8 folks you'll have trouble finding room or tables to sit at during busy hours.
The food tasted great and was available in large portions so you might look around before you order that whole sandwich unless you might want to share it. They also give away fresh unsalted chips which are a nice treat.
Definitely a return trip will be in order. -

The greatest place to get a sandwich in Portland! Everything on the menu is homemade mayo, bread, vegetables, and even their meat. I'm from Oahu so I found this mind blowing. I had their ARGENTO and HAMMER AND PICKLE sandwich and it was ahhmazing! I seriously wanted to give the person who made my sandwich a hug. Their hot sauce is awesome and of course homemade. When you're in the area you gotta try this place out.

Very friendly service and I love the chips... I didn't love the sandwich for the price but I would be willing to try it again.

DIG the tofu sandwich "people sandwich" -- not often does tofu work between two pieces of bread
fish, vegs, meat, housemade chips AND condiments, soups, salads etc.
open until 3am Fri/Sat ! -

I got the People Sandwich (pan fried tofu covered in pesto, sweet and spicy peppadew peppers and filberts on a french roll). So good! They make their own homemade chips and ketchup as well.
The person that took my order was friendly, and was able to tell me where there was a store so I could pick up a 6 pack to have while I ate this amazing sandwich.
This place is pretty much evenly priced along the same lines as Subway and Quizno's, but why go to those places when you can have something delicious, fresh and local?
This place is definitely a place I wil go to again and again. They are even open until 3 am on Fri and Sat! -

Nestled in a corner of Old Town Portland, People's Sandwich is dishing out some of the tastiest noshes you will find between buns. With all proteins sourced from the region, house-made chips and condiments, People's satisfies my sammich jonesin' frequently (3x this week).
There's a nice variety on offer, from breakfast types (fried egg and cheese, with ham, bacon, or veggie patty), to the spicy hot sub (salami, ham, provolone on a French roll).
I gotta tell ya, I'm not a mayo kind of guy, and their mayo is to die for.
This week I had both the hot Italian, and their Cuban (traditional recipe w/ ham and pork loin), and I couldn't say which one I liked better. In fact one day, I ordered both, and alternated bites. (Hey, I'm not joking about this place).
Open from 10A weekdays, and noon on weekends, People's dish it out til 6pm Mon-Thurs, 4P Sundays, and for the late night crowd, til 3AM Friday and Saturday nites.
Catering available. -

I've worked downtown for 8 years and can't ever remember waiting longer for a sandwich. When it did finally come, it was tasty, but a pretty modest size. (I ordered the Portland cheesesteak). The complimentary chips, which appeared homemade, were a nice touch and hit the spot. But I was quite honestly shocked by the 15 minute (at least) wait, which was more like 20.

In my failed quest to find the Pho truck on New Year's I stumbled my way into this joint to rest my weary liver, legs and to get out of the cold. I am happy to have gotten lost on that fateful night as I ended up in an awesome sandwich shop!
The sandwich I ordered was awesome. I ordered a custom one while I chatted it up with the guy making it. It was quite delicious and helped me stave off the charms that drinking too much alcohol can bring. I hope my next lost/drunken excursion in PDX will land me here once more... -

its a good place to get sandwiches. They did just raise their prices because when I last went in, they put scotch tape and hand written prices. They sandwiches are a little over priced for what the taste is...good place, but there are better places to eat in Portland.

Just two weeks ago I had the opportunity to sample what I consider to be the best cheese steak sandwich the west coast has to offer.
I found it tucked away at The People's Sandwich of Portland. I think these days people have kind of come to the conclusion that an affordable lunch can only be boring and I'm here to tell you that is not the truth.

There's an abundance of good food downtown; I'm hoping People's Sandwich sticks around. Their food's inventive and interesting, you can have something healthy (a sensible cold sandwich, veggies and some protein) or heart-attack-prep (philly cheesesteak!) or inbetween (see rest of menu). Dave's Killer Bread (mmm) is an option for many sandwiches... Mmmm. They also have beer on tap, if you need a mid-day pint.
I'm an omnivore, but their vegan sandwich is one of my favorites - big chunks of pan-fried tofu with pesto, a mound of grilled veggies, and roasted filberts/hazelnuts. Took one of these out to a mountain bike race - my guy and I demolished one after our races and were quite happy. (Note: racing bikes makes one incredibly hungry. Being full is unusual.)
Only downside: bike parking will require a half-block walk at least -- but so it goes. -

Although they have odd, inconsistent hours, the food is quite steady. Made with great bread, the sandwiches are prepared by hand only when you order it. The sandwiches use good varieties of meats and veggies. I've had the turkey sandwich as well as their tuna salad. The amount in the sandwich is good, but it was a little overpriced. $5 for a half sandwich in these economic times is still a reach. Unfortunately, the best part of the meal are their housemade chips. Overall, it's a good sandwich if you ever get caught in that part of town, but not necessarily a destination trip.

One of the best sammie joints I have ever had the pleasure to visit Their pesto spread, breads, cherry tomatoes, etc all taste incredibly fresh and delicious.
I remember the first time they brought out the bowl of curly fries - there was so much I thought they had mistakenly given me a double order but NO. Consecutive visits showed this was not the case - they just give you a ton of taters! -
Review from Jenny C.
If The Peoples' Sandwich of Portland were any more solid, it would be at risk for some sort of Reagan-esque inspired intervention to tear it down. What has quickly become a stronghold for lunch, dinner, or late night dining in Old Town, was little more than an abandoned storefront in a tired neighborhood just over a year ago. And yet as businesses and schools slowly begin to creep back into Old Town/Chinatown, you can't help notice the trend... hard work and a good idea really does pay off.
The TKP is fantastic, and totally worth the 8 bucks. You'll get what's essentially a huge, toasty turkey sandwich stuffed lettuce and tomato. Paired with a side of dictater chips, and some killer hot sauce, it's a filling meal that I guarantee you will devour. The interior is spacious, and ordering at the counter is about as straightforward as it gets. While it's been empty every time I've stopped by, I wouldn't want to get stuck in a line if I was in a hurry. Everything is made as a labor of love, and takes almost the same amount of time you would expect for a sit down restaurant. But worth the wait? Definitely.
If you're looking for a great meal, add this spot to your list. While it doesn't deviate much from the sandwiches (for good reason) sides like the curly fries are a dirt cheap snack to share with friends. Even ice cream has found its way onto the menu. I really like where their dessert idea is going... heck, maybe one of these days we'll see an order of "Mikhail & Cookies." -

Portland, OR
I've taken gambles on their menu and lost--the Navin Johnson (cute name & concept ruined by bland, underspiced, dry chicken) and the special burger (horrifically boring and overpriced) being the worst offenders--so now I just stick to what I know they're good at. A surprisingly tasty cuban sandwich and a rather delicious Italian sub would be enough to earn this place a regular slot in my lunch rotation, but the friendly staff and generally OK music (can't beat eating a sandwich to Sabbath) don't hurt either. Don't let the hokey high concept aspect of this place turn you off--it's (mostly) good sandwiches.

I went here today because one of my favorite places wasn't open for lunch yet, too bad for them and good for The People's Sandwich of Portland. I honestly wasn't expecting much but this place was surprisingly great. When ordering, the cashier promptly gave me some freshly made potato chips, which really hit the spot because I was so hungry at the time.
Then they made the sandwich, and it didn't take too long. The Cuban Sandwich is what I got. I don't remember the name they called it. But it came rolled up in and wrapped nicely in compost-able sandwich wrap with a little tootsie roll as a surprise treat. I was really in shock how good this place can be. They aren't the most uppity crew but I wasn't expecting much due to the name of the place. However, their service was fee-nominal and the little extras that they do to make your experience even better just made my morning.
:-)
Thanks

The food was fantastic, the staff was obviously happy to work there and proud of their company. Everything was great and I highly recommend this place for wonderful sandwiches. -

I was once treated extremely rudely here and have refused to go back since, despite how convenient it was at the time. I suppose if the sandwiches were more appealing to me, I would have wavered and forgiven the place, but it turns out they aren't. You can go next door to Floyd's instead.

This is a 5 star sandwich place because they do things right.
Most everything is made in house, from the roast turkey to the
frickin addicting potato chips. And if they don't make it they buy
good stuff, like Dave's bread.
I'm a BIG fan of TPSP. -
Review from Kyle F.
Very good sandwich with quality ingredients is what you can expect from here.
One thing I always forget about after ordering is the fresh made potato chips they bring out to you. Make sure to also try the fries that are hand cut on the spot by a spiral slicer.
I have had both the Cuban and Italian sandwiches here. The Italian one has some spice to it that will catch most people off guard and the cuban is delicious with mustard and cheese oozing out the sides. -
Review from dan h.
Why oh why Portland (or west coast for that matter) do you insist on putting mayo on everything? Not everyone likes mayo. It is an evil evil condiment. Sorry. I'm ranting.
I came here for lunch from my office because I'm on crutches and I didn't want to go far for my meal. Had been meaning to try this place, so today was the day.
Looking over the menu I decided on the Hammer and Pickle (hold the mayo). This is a traditional Cuban sandwich with ham, pork loin, pickle, Swiss and mustard on a french roll pressed on a grill. This is served with their dicTater chips. Get it?
The sandwich was very tasty, but again a bit too small for the price. $8? Really? Is this the common price for small sandwiches in Portland now? I'm not knocking the sandwich at all. Seems to be made with care and quality ingredients, but you can't tell me it should cost $8. $6 maybe, but certainly not $8.
The service was friendly. Cute tattooed girl behind the counter. Free water. Blah blah blah.
I am not a commie nor have I ever associated with commies. -

Eugene, OR
The food here is delicious. The sandwiches are made with the freshest ingredients and the cooks LOAD them with tasty meats (or whatever veggie substitute you desire). I'm a pretty big eater and this sandwich kept me full for quite some time.
There is a relatively small beer selection (with only one or two on tap, if I recall correctly) so if lunch-beers are a must, then you need to keep that in mind.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is functional, yet friendly. There's not a whole lot of flair in here aside from the proletariat uprising themed menu board (dicTATOR chips? Cute.). The staff is very friendly and very happy to help you make your sandwich be everything you want it to be.
I would strongly recommend stopping in and grabbing a bite if ever you're in the area. -

New York, NY
The most convincing reason yet for the Vietnam War. If communism is responsible in any way for the Cuban Pressed Hero I had today than it must be put to a halt before it spreads further. Call me a war monger, call me paranoid or even an emotionless neo-con but I've tried two sandwiches and french fries at this joint and I'd have to agree with Ronald Reagan - Mr. Gorbachev, tear these walls down!
I went at 4:30 in the afternoon. I was the only one there so nobody rushed through my food therefore I feel I got the best of what they had to offer. The Cuban sandwich was nasty...two kinds of ham and flavorless. I also had a 2nd sandwich (I know, lay off...I realize I am a fat capitalist pig) The Portland Uber Alles - veggie sandwich on a microwaved bun that's probably better if it wasn't heated up.
Nothing spectacular.
The fries were cold and stale and the ketchup was 2nd rate. It tasted like Hunt's Ketchup with strange seasoning. If that's homemade then tell the owner to buy some Heinz and focus on the sandwiches, please!
Even the water here was gross. Portland has great water...what's the deal with this place?
People's Sandwiches has all the bad parts of communism without any of the good stuff....fox example - in communust countries there are no homeless people but at People's Sandwich they are literally banging on the windows.
The bottom line is I went to this place because of the Yelp reviews and I was disappointed. There's way better sandwich options in PDX.
I'd rather wait in line for toilet paper on the streets on Leningrad than give this place another shot.
Also, as a side note, I'm a little sick of the communist kitchy-cool stuff. -

Stopped by here on a walking tour and came back for a full lunch. The Hammer and Pickle is the best Cuban sandwich I've ever had, and the Dictater Chips are quite good. We were there for lunch on a Saturday so service was a little slow, but not too bad and totally worth waiting for.

Solid sandwiches, friendly staff and an casual atmosphere rounds out one of the best sandwich places I've found in the Portland area. All the ingredients used were fresh and well balanced. Not the absolute best place in the world, but definitely worth me recommending the place to friends who happen to be in the area. Not to mention decent prices on beers in bottles and on tap.
Parking is a bit of an issue so be prepared. -

The restaurant to finally break my silence and make me want to comment enough to write a review. Oh, how I have loved lurking in silence, taking advice from all of you, bearing no responsibility for opinions of my own. Curse you, TPSP for making me love you so!
My generally-better half and I ventured into this surprisingly open and spacious establishment looking for something new and tasty that we would escape to on our lunch hour. After reading several reviews here on Yelp, I thought that The People's Sandwich might just fit the bill. My expectations were exceeded.... greatly! We have now been back twice this week, and expect to visit again soon.
The funny thing here, is that it is not the sandwiches that have me enamored. Oh, the Hammer and Pickle was good... the meat was tender and not fatty, the pickle was tasty, the bread pressed to a rather perfect density. The Cheesesteak was quite tasty, with the onions and peppers done just right - not too crisp but not a gelatinous mess either. The steak itself was sliced perfectly and incredibly flavorful and tender. A great roll added to an otherwise great, but not quite amazing sandwich. Perhaps with just a touch more cheese.... All in all, the sandwiches were good and quite filling, but while I might recommend someone try them I wouldn't wax poetic or regularly YEARN for them.
It isn't even the Dictater-chips that have me swooning here, though in my opinion they are some of the best house-made chips I have had the pleasure of getting to know. It isn't the pleasant and efficient staff who help our culinary journey to happen. It isn't even the astounding hand-cut curly fries that have been edified here by others far more experienced with their critiques than I. No, what has me nearly salivating as I type this... what has me ready to hop a train and blow off the rest of the day at the office (because sometimes you just need your FIX, dammit!!!), what has me finally participating in this whole Yelping experience is the ketchup. Yes, you read that correctly. I AM WRITING ALL OF THIS BECAUSE OF KETCHUP. It is that good.
The ketchup here is not the sugary semi-paste that you get from a packet. it is a little bit thinner than that, and with FAR more flavor. Many restaurants appear to use the same tomatoes for their marinara as TPSP uses for their house-made ketchup. There is a sense of spices and very fresh tomatoes and a bite of Worchestershire that deserves an ode in it's praise and possibly a holiday dedicated to it's glory. When using lunch as escapism from a bad day at the office, this condiment can restore my sanity and perspective. I want to buy this ketchup by the bottle and carry it with me everywhere. Even were the sandwiches terrible, I would return for the ketchup and fries alone, and gladly.
Unfortunately, I have fallen in love with something just to have it disappear far too often. Because of this,I am willing to risk losing the ability to walk in here and get a table right away. I am willing to risk having to place my order and take it back to work to eat it. I am willing to risk these things by telling you to GO TRY THIS PLACE, because I truly do believe this ketchup was conceived for the collective good, and letting it disappear would be a crime against humanity.
Power to The People's Sandwich! -
Review from Don B.
It just keeps getting better every time I go. I've now sampled:
-- The hot tuna melt - tuna salad on a french roll with melted cheese - YUM! Lots of tuna. Very tasty.
-- Portland Über Alles - Seasoned veg on a Dave's Killer roll - very tasty, lots of fresh veggies that are not overcooked with a yummy season salt and cheese. Delicious
-- Breakfast - Egg, cheese, and Morningstar sausage on a Dave's Killer roll. Simple but solidly tasty.
-- Soylent Green - baked marinated tofu with spicy peppers (roasted), pesto, filberts, and some form of tasty sauce (balsamic?). Not a flavor combo that I would usually choose, but a very tasty sandwich nonetheless (served on a french roll).
-- Caprese-ish - as you would guess and described in my first review - tasty.
Overall, you can tell that a lot of love and care goes into these bad boys, along with quality ingredients and creative flavor pairings. The most important aspect to me - I will not be making most of these at home.
Portland used to lack awesome sandwich places, and now with high caliber options like People's, J Cafe, Bunk, MCB, and Melt, we almost have too many choices! This one's easy, though. Add in the fresh cooked chips, and if I'm in the area, I'm sold.Listed in: The Last Crustade!, The Sammich Connection

I'm always on the lookout for a good sandwich shop. Being on the west side makes it not easy to go to Bunk or Meat Cheese Bread. The People's Sandwich, Commie-themed it may be, is just a great sandwich shop. The Hammer and Pickle, their version of a Cubano, delivers on taste. Two types of pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles. I don't usually go for pickles on a sandwich, but they added that extra something and I almost devoured the thing in a minute. The housemade chips were just icing on the porky cake.
if I'm ever in Old Town, I'm gonna stop by People's again to try something new. I'd hate to never know how awesome the other sandwiches are.Listed in: ROTDs

Filberts?! On a sandwich?! Yes, please!
What a great shop - TPSP has selected a healthy handful of sandwiches to choose from and they sure do them right. It's not the kind of sandwich shop where you build a sandwich from 8 million ingredients... they've focused on a few gems that are clearly wildly popular. Almost everyone walking in, or in line near me, were decided on the cheesesteak before even setting foot in the door.
I had The People's... thick slabs of pesto-smeared Ota tofu (they call this concoction the Soylent Green), sauteed peppadews (heck yeah), and crushed Filberts. Holy Hell it was delicious. It came stuffed into a white roll, but I had to retreat to the counter for a fork lest I make a giant mess of everything at our table.
Eight bucks for a sandwich may seem a lot, but considering that you would spend $6-7 at crappy Subway on a sandwich made of crap ingredients.,. the $8 at People's is a freakin' bargain. Nothing but the best ingredients here, I am confident of that. They even make their own catsup (ketchup?) for the curly fries, for Mao's sake! Do not miss the fresh dicTaterchips... and cross your fingers you get a couple in the bag still a little on the soft side- those are the best.
It's a great shop, I will be back. -

Two words: Argento Arabiata.
Make sure to get it with mustard.
Another two words: Curly Fries.
Get them, no matter what.
They have other sandwiches on the menu that I'm looking very forward to trying.
Cool thing: They're open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Well, technically, those are Saturday and Sunday mornings, but you get the picture.
Get your TPSP on. Pronto. -

Really, all you need to know about this here Old Town sandwich-giving establishment is that the soylent green inside of the synonymously named People Sandwich is not actually made of tofu, as the menu claims.
IT'S PEOPLE! IT'S PEOPLE! SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!*
*Note that the soylent green aka pesto-crusted tofu in the People Sandwich at the People's Sandwich of Portland is in fact made from tofu and not people.
Really, you need more? Fine.
Basically, since Garden State closed up shop for the winter, my cravings for non-meat-based sandwiches have gone largely unfulfilled. And when my chompy needs continue to go unrealized, weird things happen. I start to talk about prying French rolls from my cold dead hands. The Doctor Zaius song from The Simpsons escapes my mouth without warning. Luckily, as I wait with anticipation to renew my acquaintance with the chickpea sandwich, I stumbled on a sandwich of the people and for the people, or at the very least the vegan people. I'm not a vegan people, but it's fun to mix it up sometimes.
The People Sandwich contains not just the aforementioned fried tofu but red peppers, a lovely light vinegar-based dressing, and filbert nuts. So if you have leftovers and happen to be waiting for the Max and run into a bum, you can offer that the bum eat your nuts.
Lest you think that the People's Sandwich only caters to a clientele of plant killers, I will also mention that I've tried the Hammer and Pickle - a panini with thick layers of former pig - and the Argento Arabiatta, which contains salami and pepperoncinis. The first is fine, the second is even better, but my loyalty lies with the People. Well, if the house-made potato chips started a revolution, I'd probably be on their side, too. And all this runs not with the blood of the proletariat but by a few really nice guys in a humble, well-organized workspace. Check 'em out, because nothing gets better publicity than talk amongst the people.

Yum!
Got a Ham and Pickle (aka Cuban sandwich), Caprese-ish, curly fries, and two PBRS for $21. Two people could probably share a sandwich. I ate half of mine and saved the other half for later, which is always a treat.
I inquired about the Scotch ice cream and wasn't able to taste test it, but the friendly staff did let me smell it. "That was weird," the server said afterward.
My Caprese-ish sandwich was fucking delicious! Totally dank pesto vinaigrette that made my leftovers extra tasty. Both our sandwiches came on a french roll but I'm pretty stoked that other sandwiches come with Dave's Killer Bread.
This place also ruled for having more vegetarian options than Bunk Sandwiches, and more breathing room. -

Mmmmm...
I stumbled upon this little gem while shopping at the Duck Store. I would highly recommend this place for anyone shopping at the Saturday Market instead of the generic "Hawaiian Noodles" or elephant ear. Tucked in close to the Burnside bridge in Old Town it is the perfect stop when taking the Max train into/out of town.
I've visited twice. The first visit I was blown away. Super yummy sandwiches (Portland Über Alles & Caprese-ish), quick & friendly service and the CHIPS, excellent. The only thing missing is the sugar-cane Cokes (found at Bunk). The second visit I got the tofu sandwich (Soylent Green) and was a little underwhelmed, but the hot tuna melt that Don got was good, and the CHIPS, oh the chips. They are fresh fried salty little nuggets of bliss. Worth the trip alone.
