Love, love this pub. My husband and I make it a routine stop after hiking Mount Tam. Excellent selection of beers on tap, lovely garden, cozy rustic English interior, and great pub grub too - nice selection of cheeses, bangers and mash, shepherd's pie and other traditional fare.
Only trick is parking. Ugh. Minus one star for that, though it's not really their fault. Also - there can be quite a crowd on weekends in the spring and summer.

Came here with a headache, left with a smile. Great place to come with friends and/or family. Nice bartender, tasty food, great decor. Take a 3 hour vacation and go to the Pelican Inn this weekend.
(don't forget to play a round of darts!)

It's not an oasis unless there's a pub.
There is no better place to derive deep satisfaction from a long hike than the Pelican Inn. After following the coastal trail from Muir Beach for most of the morning, (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) my throbbing feet and legs are given a much needed recess as my ass drops heavily onto a wooden bench. I savor the first sip of cold beer like a man who is acquainting himself with it for the very first time. After my moment of bliss, the rest of my Boddington's goes bottom up all too soon, so I reach again for the menu. The list includes Hen's Tooth, Young's, Samuel Smith, Fuller's - I'm not in Marin, I'm in jolly old England.
"I'll stay for just one more, and maybe some food..." I tell my dog, Murphy, who is tethered outside and looks ruefully at me through the front window. Brits have never been known for their cuisine, so if I had come looking for fine dining, I'd have been disappointed with bangers and mash, fish and chips, toasties, or a Ploughman's Lunch. But I believe that there is a time and a place for everything, and nothing goes better with English ale than pub grub.
As I wait for my shepherds pie to make its way to my table, I take in the setting of this Tudor Tavern and Inn. This is the real deal, in every detail. Even the decorative adornments were brought from across the pond. Looking a little closer I find further evidence of why this venerable establishment is every bit as authentic as it appears. There are listings for local events including weekly buckshees, high tea, fireside singalongs, and celebrations of British holidays.
It is all too apparent why good taverns are also inns, because after the drinking, the eating, the singing and the new best friends that I make during it all, I need a room. My dog, Murphy, still chained up in the front yard, gives me guilty looks. As day bleeds into night, he begins to whine pitifully, as if to say, "I'm driving home again, aren't I?"
Good dog.

We love this place for dinner or lunch, so charming and yummy food too. The Calidonian Beer AWESOME. But, as far as the rooms go, not as great. A little smelly and old, which I realize is ironic, (the place IS old, was brought over from the UK), but the rooms should feel cleaner... Or at least smell fresher. Not worth $200/night... But do stop for lunch or dinner. The hike at Muir Beach is so beautiful looking out over the bluffs. One of our favorite day trip places.

The Pelican Inn is a total gem in Northern California. It's as authentic as an English Inn & Pub can be in this country from the great selection of European beers to the mediocre water pressure in the rooms. It's great for simply stopping by for a bite after a day of hiking or hanging our at Muir beach, and even better if you can spend the night. IMHO, the complimentary full English breakfast is the highlight of the stay (great bangers, baked beans, grilled tomato, organic bread made at the nearby Zen center).
To be clear though, it is an English pub, so don't come expecting drinks that end with "-tini" or flat panel TVs in the rooms (no TVs at all, actually). Also there is little/no cell service in the area, so go there to embrace it and disconnect. It is a very special place indeed.
We had our wedding at the Pelican Inn. Everything was amazing, except the mosquitoes. We had the best day and will be coming back for our first anniversary!
Our guests loved the atmosphere and the food. The mini fish and chips were a personal favorite.
The service was excellent and the rooms were charming. I loved that we didn't have to ask anyone to turn their phones off, due to lack of cell service. It was wonderful to just be there and enjoy it without checking my phone for email or messages. It was a perfect day!
Nestled between the beach and the mountain it's the perfect place for a pub, and the perfect place for either a been on the sun-drenched lawns or an after-hike shepherds pie.
Weekend traffic gets a little crazy (Muir Woods visitors coupled with beachgoers) and we find that there's no better way than to discover the Pelican Inn by foot. Here are a couple of hikes which link the pub to the Tamalpais and Marin Headlands hills ..

Oh, and don't forget to ask for the HP Sauce to go with your shepherd's pie!

Love this place. I have been here many times over the past 15 years or so. An old boyfriend and I found this place during a Sunday drive in Marin. You truly do feel like you've traveled to Scotland... so quaint, charming, rustic but also fun, like pubs are meant to be. I have enjoyed Sunday brunch (it's a buffet style with a nice spread), afternoon snacks at the bar and dinner. In fact it has been WAY too long since I've been. Must plan a trip soon!

This brought us back to studying abroad in London in a really great way. We each ordered something classically British (fish and chips, bangers and mash...) and enjoyed a beer with it. The food is fairly expensive and not at all healthy. You shouldn't go here if you want to eat healthy though because come on! That's not part of the gimmick! The atmosphere is dark and the tables are big and sturdy and just the perfect inn feel. I enjoyed it even though it wasn't QUITE as good as being in London and eating fish and chips from newspaper wrapping.

Fantastic English pub and the perfect romantic getaway.
Drive to Marin to enjoy the beaches and views and stop by this charming pub for a pint of ale, a bite to eat and a round of darts. I love the Ploughman's cheese board!
You can also get a room which gives you access to "the Nook" - a shared private room for overnight guests with wing-back leather chairs and a wood burning fireplace. Perfect for an intimate gathering or a romantic weekend!

Authentically British pub, with low-beamed ceilings, a giant hearth, lagers, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and heavy picnic-type, shared tables, (except in the garden room, which is under a greenhouse-type ceiling), this is the perfect place to go after hiking around Stinson Beach or Muir Woods. It's romantic, casual, one-of-a-kind, snug, perfect for cold summer days, or when you want some delicious comfort food. The good kind of British food. ;)
It is also an Inn where you can stay (for exorbitant prices), and also a great place to have a wedding -- especially with the rolling green grounds, and yes, Pelicans roaming around. :)

The guy that started this Inn was British, and he had a loooong time family lineage of British Isle innkeepers. Soooo... this place is pretty darn authentic, apparently!
I can only speak to the Pub side of the Pelican... since I've been there many times! I have never eaten in the main dining area (a little more swanky) nor have I stayed here overnight. But the pub is great - that much I know. Play a game of arrows, enjoy a pint - Smithwicks Kilkenny Irish Ale on draft! Also on tap is of course, Guinness and Fuller's London Pride Ale. It's tiny, cozy, dark, generally full of friendly folks - classic pub. I can almost guarantee you'll meet someone new, as it's so little - you're always rubbin' elbows with others... literally. But the folks are always chill - 'cause the place is cool and the beer is good.
One more tip... they have the most tasty fresh warm bread - I think it comes from Green Gulch Farm (just up the road). I always loved the Shepard's Pie. This place has been here a long time - I really like it.
Only advice - if you are going here on a weekend, consider calling ahead (especially in Spring & Summer) to make sure it's not closed for a private event. Happens every so often - but if you make the trek out there and it's closed... it's a bummer, since there's no where else really close by.
This review is for the Pub/Restaurant only.

The best "British Style Pub" in Northern California.
This is easily the most authentic "Pub" I've been too in Northern California in atmosphere and food.
I have had all of the typical pub grub dishes there including fish and chips, bangers and mash and even Yorkshire Pudding. They all were very good to excellent. The food tends to be better closer to the weekend and about midway though dinner service.
They also have the biggest piece of prime rib I have ever had, Its HUGE!!!
I do want to point out here they have the best English Sherry Trifle I have ever had in the US and better than most that I get back in the UK. All of the desserts were first class.
They are also the only place I know of in California that has Black Thorn Cider on tap. Which is fantastic!
As far as atmosphere goes they have it all right as a pub should be except for a few things. The type of pub they are portraying on the inside is what you might expect as a "middle class Pub" but the staff is trained and dressed in a bit more sophisticated manner than they should be. They come across way too formal. They (all of the staff) should be more friendly an casual of they really want to capture the "pub" feeling.
This is really one of my favourite places in the Bay Area and I really struggled what to rate it. The food does have some consistency problems and like I said the wait staff is too formal. If the food was as good as it can be all the time I would have given it 5 stars easily.
Great place and a must do for any Brit feeling a bit homesick!

This is a very charming inn - reminiscence of the pubs restaurants in England.
Although nice looking, I was very disappointed in the Sunday brunch. It's $21 / person - the roast beef and ham were dry, crab bisque soup luke warm, and the delicious chocolate cake dry. The only thing that was good was the salmon and vegetables. I would of thought since it's an english type pub, they would have atleast served yorkshire pudding and roasted potatoes. Infact, I skipped the mash potatoes because they looked dry and cold.
Additionally, they ran out of the large plates so I got the small dessert plate. The person cutting the meat didn't seem to understand english - thus it was a little awkward when I asked him a question and he wasn't able to answer.
The bar food looked more appetizing - so that might be worth a try. I wouldn't run back but if I'm in the area for a walk at Muir Beach - I might stop by for the bar menu lunch and sit outside.
May be it was an off day.
Great place to stop in for a brew and fishnchips. Had the shepherd's pie and a Smithwick's. The carefully manicured front lawn is a bit weird, do they play golf on it? There is a big selection of wine and beers although the food menu is a bit limited (fishnchips - but 15$? Ouch, bangers and mash, a beef stew, salad), but remember it is british. Haha, I kid. There is also lodging upstairs.
Don't hesitate to explore around the area, there are horses just across the road, and muir beach just a hike away.
An Olde English Inn tucked away behind Muir Beach? It's a sight so beautiful it's almost bittersweet. I mean, in England they have places like this everywhere. Why must California tease me with just one? But don't get me wrong, I'll take it. After all, what better post-hike activity than getting a mug of porter (or better yet, the "black russian"--Guinness with a shot of port), a shepherd's pie, a ploughman's lunch, etc, in the dark warmth of the low-ceilinged pub room? If you come for full-on dinner, there's a separate and equally awesome dining room with a massive fireplace, as well as a charming covered back patio. Oh, and if the pub gets too full (which, being tiny and popular, it frequently does), you can have your beer out on the lawn--the mountain bikers seem to love this.
The only thing left is to come spend the night here so I can see the upstairs. Yes, it's only 40 minutes from my house, but hey, the only alternative is paying for a flight to the UK, so...
Anyway, if you've never had the chance to see a real English Country Inn, put the Pelican on your list (and try to come on a Sunday when Minstrel Mark plays his "hit songs from the 1500s to the present"). Maybe if enough Californians fall in love with it, we can each get one in our own neck of the (red)woods.

My husband and I took a long weekend in San Fran in the Fall. We took a day and went to the Muir Woods. On our way home we decided to find a place to grab lunch. We happend upon The Pelican Inn. At first we weren't sure if it was open to the public because the parking lot was full and there were a ton of people laying out on the front lawn. We walked inside, the hostess greeted us asked if we wanted the Sunday brunch (which was pricy for the short time we had to eat) or to eat in the bar. We opted for a quick lunch in the bar.
The bar tender took our order...it took a bit for him to get to us since it was quite busy. We met some really fun people from Cananda just traveling through San Fran as well. The bar tender asked us if we wanted to eat in the bar or out on the lawn.
When our food came, we were thrilled with our meals! My husband had the Shepherds Pie and I had the fish and chips. The meals were a bit pricy, but the food and fun attitude of the Pelican Inn were worth it. I'd suggest for anyone to check it out after a long hike through Muir Woods
Nestled in a cove right next to Muir Beach, this authentic British pub/restaurant brought me right back to my days spent in England. Good luck trying to find a more authentic British place. As an anglophile, I can definitely attest to the authenticity of its decor, food, drinks and atmosphere. The place even smells British .. has that smoky 'just lit fireplace' smell that can only sometimes be found in an old pub in England on a cold day.
Trying going on a nice beach day. You can either sit in the pub area or even sit on the beautiful front lawn and share some drinks or snacks. I have ventured on days where I thought I was just grabbing one drink, only to make friends and play darts till the late evening hours!
Try it .. or actually don't. It is Marin's best kept secret and maybe should not be shared ... :)
Authentic.
Walk through the door and you might as well be in the UK. I have had the Sunday buffet twice, and each time it was satisfying. It doesn't feel family run like some of my Welsh favorites, but the management is obviously well aware of what a pub should feel like. Wish they had more cider choices, only Blackthorn (on tap) as of 09.
Ambiance of a British pub is fabulous. Pick up a pint (or more) of beer after a long hike. It gets very busy on the weekends. Food is not great to my palette, but I give it five stars anyways since they are serving "British" cuisine. Probably as good as it gets for British. If you are to spend the night, make sure to book your room early, as they have only a handful (seven?) of rooms. I stayed and like it a lot for being a rustic spot without a tv set. Great place to take a long walk on the beach after sunset.

So we were surfing in Bolinas, stopped by here after for some beer and food. The beer and atmosphere are great, the food, not so much. They had a $21 buffet that didn't look too awesome to me, however after ordering the fish and chips I wish I had gone for the buffet. I think it was around $17 and you got 2 small pieces of fish (half of which I couldn't eat cause they hadn't cooked it long enough so the batter was still wet inside). The boyfriend had the Shepard's pie which wasn't much better, and our friend had the bangers and mash which he liked. Anyway, next time I recommend packing a lunch and getting your beer here.

The Pelican Inn is simply enchanting. Tucked away in Muir Woods, it's built in the likeness of a 16th century British country inn, with low beamed ceilings, huge fireplaces and a warm candlelit glow all around. It's the perfect place to cozy up after a trip to the beach or a hike around Mt. Tam.
Most people know the pub, where they serve up authentic dishes like shepard's pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips, mussels and a few other fine dishes, not to mention homemade bread right out of the oven and big mugs of beer. The food was so good (mmmm, lightly fried fish in a thick batter with all of the fixins) I was thrust into a debilitating comfort food coma.
We took our beers and snuggled up in "the snug" or the parlor - a cozy room with a flickering hearth for guests only. We couldn't believe how much we felt like we were in an old world country home, from the oil paintings on the walls to the books on the shelves to the glowing lanterns and brass finishings. Our room was cozy too, with a big down comfy bed for two.
The cost of the room ($190) includes a traditional English breakfast in the morning, with bangers, beans, eggs, roasted tomatoes and bread. Plus some ghost stories about the place told by our lovely innkeepers. And as far as discovering this place? It's about bloody time!

We ate here yesterday on our way back from Stinson to the city. I also ate here once several months ago after a long hike to Muir Beach! I'm a little torn about this place, but a couple of things pushes it over the 3 star rating into a 4 star.
CONS
-hanging out/eating in the bar area is physically uncomfortable - experienced this both times there
-SKIMPY ON THE FOOD PORTIONS considering the price
-all the claims of it being soooo authentic make it a little underwhelming once you're actually there - decor is so-so on the authentic side
-last time we were there, the hostess was a bit frazzled/confusing
PROS
-the food is delicious, plus if you're clever like us, you can request the free + seemingly nutritious bread made at the Zen Center down the road;
-drink selection is good - I appreciate being able to order a disguised girly drink like a Shandy (ginger-ale and ale)
-if you're there while the weather is nice, you can enjoy your comestibles outdoors on the front lawn
- the barmen are so nice, cool, and all about service
- the dark dinginess works for its authentic old-england claim
I think the main motivation for me to eat there is merely that I'm out of the city, and that's a special occasion, plus I can drink a Shandy.
I've been both to the restaurant for dinner, which is nice on a cold, foggy (summer) night, very cozy if you can get seated next to the fireplace.
I prefer the pub, they have a great selection of wine, and the fish n chips are great. When the weather is hot, make a day of it! Order your drinks and food at the bar and enjoy it the lawn! I love to sit outside when it is hot in this area.
How did I not write a review for Pelican Inn yet!?!?! (so much catching up!)
VALENTINES DINNER & DINNER IN GEN
Came her for valentines dinner maybe 3 years ago and for dinner several times since. It's out of the way which makes the wife feel more special, but not necessarily easy to get a reservation. I love that the beach is nearby where you can go for a walk and see the sunset. Good coastal sightseeing in general, and the Muir Woods nearby... you can make a day out of this trip! Love the old world charm of the place, huge fire place, great staff, romantic lighting, and really good food (wild game a-plenty on the menu).

Go for a walk on Muir beach and then follow it with a proper pub lunch. Bangers and mash every time.
This place did not live up to my expectations.
It was a beautiful Saturday, probably the last beautiful Saturday of our Indian Summer. We arrived at the Pelican Inn around 2 in the afternoon to find that it was packed. No problem, we could grab our beers and our fish 'n chips out on the lawn. We're easygoing folk, so it wasn't that big a deal.
The service, on the other hand, left a little to be desired. They were super duper slow in the kitchen, which the wait staff kept telling us, and the children who were picnicking around us obviously hadn't gotten the least bit to eat. Now, I don't care if I don't eat right away (was about 45 minutes to an hour before we got our food), but the kids were getting cranky and restless. Really, make up a cheese plate, or send out a bucket of chips. Not necessary to make kids wait that long.
The road out there was carsick-inducing. Doubtful I'll be back.

I loved my stay at the Pelican Inn!!! The setting is great, the pricing is decent, about $200 give or take, and just the homey atmosphere one of a kind. I personally played more darts than I think I ever have before in my life.
Its location so close to Muir Beach is also a great asset.
It's a great place to just relax and enjoy a lazy afternoon.
What a treat. I believe many people have driven by this inn on the way to Stinson, but it is worthwhile to pay them a visit, whether it's for a quick lager or an overnight stay. Charming is the best word. Room prices are reasonable for the experience. Each room has varying decor and the owners and staff are extremely friendly.
The additional beauty of this place is Muir Beach is at the end of the road. You can relax at the beach on a lazy afternoon or head to the cliffs on the south-side and venture on a wonderful hike up to Pirate's Cove or beyond. When friends (especially, couples) come in from out of town, I recommend they stay a night here if there is vacancy.
I second that notion Dan M.! Duh, self! How have I neglected this little charming gem?
Fantastically enchanting inn, pub and eatery. Do yourself a favor and go there on a gloomy, foggy, misty day- sit by the large crackling fireplace, order a guinness and the lamb shephard's pie! you will not be disappointed.
note: the atrium is adorable.

BYOB or pay $3.50 for a half pint of Guinness.
They know they have you by the balls.
We came here famished after a long 8 mile hike at Point Reyes.
I enjoyed the interior and ambiance of the place...it was very English, warm, cozy and romantic. Who'd have thought this little English gem was behind Muir Beach?
The service was a bit spotty in the beginning, we had to get the bartender to get us a table which he bussed as we sat down. No sweat, we weren't exactly dressed for the occasion being in shorts and shirts. It took us a good while to get water for the table.
The food, in my opinion was good. I got the beet and watercress salad served with goat cheese and lightly candied walnuts. It hit the spot well and I got to sample a friends mushroom and brie tartlet, very good but not as good as my salad.
For the main course I got the braised lamb shank which was accompanied by almonds (whole), an orange demi glaze and a mixed assortment of vegetables (celery, onions, carrots) and navy beans. The lamb was perfectly seasoned and so were the vegetables. I questioned the orange demi glaze and it was way to fruity but then again I'm never a fan of fruit sauces with meat. The other people at the table had the beef wellington (which looked amazing) and the prime rib.
I finished the meal of with the trifle which was the only low point of the meal. It was obviously sitting for a while as the sponge cake had soaked up so much of the syrup that it just tasted like mush.
Finish this off with a pint of Smithwicks and it cost about $54 with tip.
Overall, I would recommend this place as it is as authentic as you can get (according to my English friend). It's a great find for something out of the ordinary in a great setting. I'd recommend this place for a romantic dinner (we had a single long stem candle illuminating our table). It just gave the overall restaurant an intimate feel.
Anyone who knows me well knows about my hey nonny nonny side. As in, the oft-repeated refrain used in many a Medieval English ballad. As in, my final project for holistic nutrition school is on Medieval English cuisine. As in, my best friend and I like to freestyle Medieval English songs at parties. As in, I get excited about recipes like "Take a goodly ammount of yduckye, and add thereof cinnamon and saffron, but not too much, and roast it in a Pigge's stomach". I don't know why and I can't explain this; I am a mixed Jew from the suburbs of Boston but in a past life I must have been a drunken knave or a scullery wench.
So naturally with my attraction to all things ye and olde, when I stumbled upon the Pelican Inn I was beside myself. They even have a minstrel playing Rennaissance aires every other Sunday! I love the fireplaces, the low-beamed ceilings, and the cosy feel of the pub. The food is fine but to me it's secondary to the atmosphere. Although the building was built in the 1970s, it's as authentic as any similar establishment I've visited in England or in Ireland. Best of all if you talk with the staff they will tell you ghost stories. For a young building it's sure got a lot of spooky characters about....perfect for a wild, rainy, dark winter's night. Or a sunny afternoon post-Green Gulch hike. Take your pick.

After a long hike from Muir Beach to Tennessee Valley and back on a cold, cloudy day, we stopped at the Pelican Inn for some rest and relaxation. And, we sure did find it.
Did they go to England and move a pub over? Sure seems like it. The environment is warm and inviting. We only were there for the bar snack menu, but it hit the spot. I enjoyed my cheese toasty (though I've had much better) and salad was good. Prices were fine. I think we're all used to things going up.
The best part about the place is that they are in no rush to get you out the door. You can linger with friends and let your conversation go wherever it takes you.
One day, if it's ever sunny again, I'd like to return to the Pelican Inn and see what the grounds are like. It looks lovely.

Sooooooo cozy, large beer selection. Feels very authentic. Tons of wonderful pub decor to keep my eyes happy. Delicious English food as well. Bartender was really friendly and helpful (+ accent :) )
I had the fish and chips and they tasted very fresh. I tried mead for the first time that was spicy and a repeater. Wish I could have stayed there!

Is it possible for one become homesick for a country they never lived in?
Who the hell knows, but I miss Europe everyday and secretly am Traitorous in my wishes to call it home...
The Pelican Inn stirred those feelings to the surface for me on Wednesday. Is it the cobbled floor? The multiple old hearths with warm fires aglow inside their centers? The dark wooden beams with such structure and purpose they could hold up all the problems in the world?
Is it the bar with every drink known to any Respectable Brit, the long tables at which to dine with your family, friends and or neighbor?
They sure don't hurt! For all these things, I would come back again and again, gladly - but add on the stellar food and you got me coming back without choice!
Wednesday was the Guy Fawkes celebration, complete with buffet and Guy burning down at the beach - a bonfire and gorge? Hells yeah, I'm there!
We started at the buffet, we wise 3, and delighted in shepard's pie, fish & chips, bangers & mash, stuffed potatoes, homemade bread and chocolate cake with chantilly cream. Beverage of the night? The Housemade hot apple cider. Spicy, warm and sweet.
Dinner finished (2 trips to the table and many fried fishies later) and we hiked down to the bonfire to see poor Guy roast at the spit. Who knew about this celebration? Surely not I!
Come lunch, come for dinner and come for Sunday Carvery - fresh roasted meats, brunch lovelies and a pint or two. They're not kidding about their selection of perfection. You will love every last detail. No lie Gov'na.

Being a Brit, its great to have a such an authentic little country pub here in SF.
And as its near a beach, go for a hike then get some well deserved comfort grub and a good beer. They even serve beer in rarely seen 'Andy Cap' style British pub glasses for that old skool twist.
Plus a dart board for those who want to throw the 'arrows'
My husband and I were married here. Our friends and family had a blast. There is nothing like getting married at an British pub. ;)
My husband took me here a couple of times before we were married and I thought it was cute and cozy. I liked the location and the beach is close by. They have lots of beer on tap and a yummy cheese plate with pears. The rooms are nice too.

after spending the afternoon hiking through muir woods, we had worked up quite a hunger. a craving for fish and chips set in and we found our way over to the pelican inn.
loved the patio. protection from the elements and heat from a fireplace without totally sacrificing the sun. the interior seemed a bit dark, so i'm not sure i would have enjoyed sitting there.
the food was good. in typical english style, the 'chips' weren't crisp and the fried fish was served blandest veggie of them all, peas, but the fish was perfect. i liked the crab cakes a lot and my english cider was tart and crisp, just how i like it.
Great memories were created here - dined with loved ones. The wait staff are nice and helpful with the menu. We enjoyed the fish and chips, Shepherd's pie, and English dip sandwich.
Come here after a long walk at Muir Woods and/or sunbathing at Muir Beach!
