I had the best time here with my girlfriends.
For eats, The lobster bisque was soooo rich -- much better than I expected! I also had the crab cakes which were excellent! The thing about crab cakes is you might taste too fishy or not fresh enough but here they were crisy on the outside and soft and smooth on the inside. Good. Martini's were excellent and they kept coming all night w/o having to wait for the waitress ... a PLUS!
Speaking of waitress -- she was one of the best parts of this place! Maria, our server, allowed us to play the guessing name of "where are you from?" My guess was South America, my other friend guessed Russian and another guessed Hungarian. Who was right???? Meee!!! Maria was awesome and really a wonderful waitress.
I'll be back!
Great Wines - CHECK
Great Friends - CHECK
Great Laker Game after Dinner - CHECK
Great Food~ Hmmmm half a check? Perhaps 3/4's of a check?
This place has great ambiance in regards to the city of Los Angeles. Caricatures of celebrities, sport stars and government officials all over the walls. Perfect place to relax prior to that start of a Laker, Clipper, or Kings game. It is walking distance to the staple center.
The staff have an "old world style" and charm with there uniforms. Overall the dinner was solid. Food came out on time and was well seasoned, it just didn't blow me away. I guess when paying $42.50 for a petite Filet Mignon, I want it to sing, dance and melt in my mouth. The family style sides were solid. We tried the cheesy potato's, sauteed mushrooms, and fried asparagus tips. The family style portions make for a great way to sample everything you order.
The service was very good and very entertaining. Any waitress giving a free scalp massage after dinner, would make me laugh.
This is a restaurant that I would give another shot at but falls again in the half star range. 31/2 would be appropriate, but I do have to reduce them down to 3 for the quality of the Steak.
I guess my standards are set REALLY HIGH.
A special thanx to my good friend and client whom made this day possible. Great Wines to Come~
Give Them a Try~
Cheers~
I guess when someone else pays for a meal one tends to be a bit more likely to enjoy it but I decided to put that aside and give this place a review just as if I pulled out my very own plastic and paid for it.
So here we go again, trying a place in downtown LA that I've heard of and wanted to try and walking out thinking "this is what the fuss is all about, don't get it"..... I work here now and a vendor generously extended a coworker and me an invite for lunch. Didn't have to ask me twice...
Valet parking was $5.00 with validation, not bad for the area. Or if you want, and have a shit load of quarters handy, you can park at one of the meters.
Cool looking inside, lots to look at (and read) The ladies restroom was just average, surprisingly. Service very nice, just what you'd expect.
The lunch menu was diverse, you could get a sandwich or a major steak. I opted for a bowl of lobster bisque and the crabcakes. I know its a steak place but frankly I wasn't up for one and even though I know the sales rep expenses it, I just couldn't see ordering a $40.00 steak; probably should have. The bisque was a very watered down version of what it should have been. It was nicely presented but fell sadly short in the taste department . The crabcakes, again I was a bit disappointed. I ordered crabcakes and that's all there was on the plate, 2 cakes with a bit of some fruity garnish. Come on folks put something else on there even some coleslaw would have been nice. The cakes were simply undersized and very underseasoned, I have made better in my kitchen, trust me, its not brain surgery.
Vendor ordered the salmon and he got a salmon fillet, that's all there was on the plate..ridiculous! We ordered a side of fries to split and within a few minutes a plate of quite greasy ones arrived...check your oil temperature chef!
So maybe we should have ordered steak but my feeling is if its on your menu make it taste good...especially at those prices.
Would I go back again? Not on my dime...
Great place to stop by for a quick bite or full dinner before the game at the Staples Center. The lobster is a must-try!
In a word AMAZING!
The food service and ambiance all top notch.
The food unforgetable and warrants numerous repeat visits.
Loved the creamed spinach.
But the price is what stings...but worth every penny!
Dont order the Tuna steak it tastes awful gave me food poisening.
The service is very slow even on a slow night. Just wasnt satisfied
Dine LA #2- The Palm. Where people come when they are hungry! Very Hungry!
Came here with a group of coworkers to try their Dine LA 3 course menu. $$- $22 Menu.

Service- Typically if a restaurant has a dine LA menu the staff provides you with the menu along with the regular menu. I felt the waitress was being a bit sneaky by not bringing it to us first and we had to ask for it. She then made a "face" about it. She was then a bit weird taking our orders, repeating things, and when I asked for a vegetarian option first she abruptly said " NO" then she said she would ask. Then she came back and said
" They told me to ask you what you had in mind". Ummmmm something vegetarian? Pasta with veggies I guess. She got that done for me eventually.
The food was super tasty, HUGE portions and pretty fresh. The only complaint was that the Ahi Tuna was a bit bland. Other than that, we got huge baskets of bread, delicious fried onions and housemade potato chips served family style AND a plate of pickles/radishes. Great presentation.
The steaks were huge and I heard pretty darn good. My pasta had a great sauce. The soups were decent ( mushroom/barley and Lobster bisque).
Man we ate a lot!!!!
Dessert was very good. They make their own key lime pie which was soooo good. Cheescake was good ( but ordered out), and Creme Brulee was yummy.
Best touch was that the manager kep coming over to talk to us, asked us questions, even asked where we work etc. Right off the bat he offered to buy us Dessert. When he found out we were doing Dine LA, he gave us his business card to come back next time and have a dessert or drink on him. Very nice. I am not sure why he was so over the top nice because there was not a single complaint on the table. Goes to show you that sometimes service can go a long way, BEFORE there are any problems that need fixing.
Its a great building, with cool cartoons on the walls. Its a classic steakhouse so it has that old school/semi corporate feel to it.
I am sure we will try it again sometime.
P.S. We had about 8 boxed plates of leftovers.
P.P.S Im still full about 3 hours after.
I've gone to this restaurant twice. I've had Way better steak! If you're looking for authentic good cooked steak.. you should go to Boa steak house or Flemings or Mastro's.
I ordered Filet Mig steakk both times and both times it taste like Denny's steak. The second time it was burnt on the outside and I ordered my steaks Medium Rare.
This place does get crowded because of LA Live plus Laker games.. The drinks are good and so is the atmosphere. But the food is definitely not worth it for its price!
Came back again last night before the Jonas Brothers concert. I've been here maybe 10 times and really? It gets worse each time. The problem now is that wih all of the new restaurants open over by Nokia. they better step it back up a notch or they are going to really suffer. I can tell they already are...1 hour before the concert and the place was only 1/4 full. The Nokia restaurants had lines!
What was good:
The service...A+ all the way.
What was bad:
Cold bread, yuck
warm iceberg wedge salad
a 14 oz filet that ended up being the size of the palm of my hand, $45
Creme Brulee that was runny.
Sorry, Palm, I might not be coming back!

5 Stars for being the best place to go for dinner before a Laker game. Minus one star for being out… Read more »
Came here mid-week and sat at the bar with the girls. Joe the bartender is AMAZING and made awesome drinks and shots (umm sugar cookie shot HELLOO) ...there were many premium cocktails had...
The food? CRAZY DELISH! EVERYTHING WAS SUCCULENT AND FRESH AND AWESOME!
From the caprese to the other salad to the lamb (and the wine was EXCELLENT) and my personal favorite- the Chilean Sea Bass...it was buttery, juicy and lightly toasted....holy mouthgasm.
It's probably for the best that The Palm is downtown and I'm on the West Side or else my monies would be spent and I'd be drunker than Mel Gibson on a Monday.
Also, I'm pretty sure all of the chefs here are unicorns.
My friend ordered a Ceasar salad and he got the core of the lettuce and grated parmesan cheese instead of slivers of cheese. Nothing special, it looked like the salad at McDonalds. He also order a Filet Mignon, medium well. What he got was a piece of charcoal, when he mentioned to the waiter that his steak was burnt, his comment was: is not burned is just that the steak is so thick they have to cook it a lot. For two of us, we paid $480. I will never go back again!
We live next door, so it's nice to pop into the bar area for a quick dinner. We've done the whole make a reservation and eat in the dining room thing, too, but we prefer the booths in the bar - everything's a little less "event meal" feeling and that's what we want because it's our neighborhood joint.
Last night I had a dozen oysters and lobster bisque, my husband had the chicken fingers and potatoes au gratin (he eats like a child, that's what he likes). The Cotes du Rhone by the glass is great and we've never ordered any food here we didn't like.
The fish was delicious but their steak.. was really rare. Even if you order rare.. it was just a chunk of blood. Maybe some people like that but OMG.. i thought i was going to puke just looking at it.
But again.. the fish was great!
I had my APO (co-ed frat) banquet there so I'm not too sure about the prices.
The decor was really pretty. Their upstairs is a private room which was pretty nice.
I wouldn't mind going back here.
Honestly.. the fish was really good.
p.s. they have matches. :))
Thought I'd give them a try during this DineLA week. Service was good, waiter and busboys included. Ordered the lobster bisque - okay, but I prefer my lobster in chunks I guess. Had the 9 oz. filet medium rare. The steak was nice and tender, not a lot of flavor but alright. It came with these blue cheese fries - yuck, I'm not a blue cheese fan so no likey. Also came with this giant platter of crispy potato chips and onion strings. Yummy, greasy, but heavy on the stomach. I also tried my friend's Chilean sea bass - delicious! Inside was moist and tender, outside was a little crisp and salty. Also loved my creme brulee, not too heavy or too sweet. The key lime pie was a huge piece and had a slightly bitter tartness to it.
Overall enjoyed it. Would definitely come back for the fish.
Why should you visit this place?
- conveniently located near downtown hub of LA convention center, Staples Stadium and LA Live
- meat in it's juicy red best
- non-cow meats like lobster
- non-meats like creme brulee dessert
Why this place didn't get cinco estrellas?
- service was seriously lacking
- learn how to make marinara sauce, it's not just smooshed tomatoes
- very poor food leftover packing job, it was leaking in the bag while I was still in the restaurant!
This is a fine place but not a "destination on my dime" sort of place.
I would not go out of my way for a meal here.
I find it to be over priced for the quality of preparation.
The steak, while of good quality, was not prepared with care.
Oh well.
The potatos (scalloped, I think) were good.
The green beens, nicely al dente.
I still cannot justify the prices, but what did I ecpect, it is an expense account type of place.
GOOD STUFF
The bar during the later half of an evening is a great mix of locals/regualrs who happen to be very pleasant and all appear to be having a relaxed, good time.
I've enjoyed myslef here on the evenings where we've enjoyed dinner elsewhere and came here for drinks with friends.
I will be happy to to visit the bar with my friend in the future, I will just make sure to have dinner prior to our arrival.
This place is over rated. Their food is very average. I think it stays in business because people are so used to coming here. But now, downtown has so many more options, you shouldn't bother with this place. Riordan's has better steak. ESPN Zone is better for pre-game drinks. I think The Palm is antiquated and on its way out.
Steaks are pretty good. Occasioanlly get the temp wrong but are more than happy to take it back.
Sides are above average.
Service is hit or miss. Some of their staff are great while others don't realy know what they're doing.
Had mostly good experieces here. Better to go late on a weekday night when the place is empty.
Great spot for cocktails and appetizers. Dinner service is lousy and food is mediocre and over-priced.
Feels like you're stepping back in to old-world Los Angeles. If you're looking at this review, you probably aren't too familiar with the drill over at the Palm. It is, quite simply, an old man's steak house, except perhaps a little more light hearted. I went here for my birthday with a few friends. The steak and sides were good, as was the wine. All expectations were met, none were exceeded. The Palm may be a little stuffy for a first date but definitely worth taking a steak-lover to if you want to warm their heart.
I love this place. Everyone who knows me can vouch for the fact that I am the biggest carnivore with a soft spot in my heart AND belly for American steakhouse fare.
The booths are comfy and old school and the waiters are impeccably presentable. They make good cocktails and the petite filet with the creamed spinach never disappoints. The ahi tuna and the creamy lobster bisque was delicious as well.
The steak was mediocre.
The sides weren't impressive.
The service needed improvement.
The meal didn't justify the price.
I've been here several times. I like the bar - that is about it. I've had one good steak here and several ho-hum ones - this place is overpriced for the quality I've had. The food just is not that good for the price. The one in Vegas is much better and has a much better lunch menu too.
A friend of mine took me here on a Saturday night and I thought the food was really great, the wait staff was friendly and on top of things. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I wasn't sure about the parking. They have valet but I'm not sure what the parking would be like otherwise. There's a huge parking garage right behind that you can probably park in.
Other than that I'm not 100% sold on spending 40+ on a steak and then an addition 10+ for a side. I like meat and potatoes and it sucks to have to order them seperate. :)
I guess, in a nutshell, really good food but a pricey place.
The ONLY time I ever come here is when I receive gift certificates.
Food is way overpriced. There are much better steakhouses out there for the price you pay here.
I always order the ribeye. tastes fine. can't complain, but I've had better.
I ordered salmon once. Bad choice. It had that fishy taste to it... Should have just stuck with beef.
The sides aren't bad.
String beans - not overcooked. had a nice crunch to it. but, a boring taste.
Potatoes - nice and cheesy. good.
Half & half - just your basic potato chips with fried onion rings. not bad.
Calamari - ummm? served on wilted lettuce.
As for desserts, was always full to try so can't review.
Service was fine. Very attentive. Can't complain.
Bueno, No Bueno?
Los Vascos - 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Colchagua, Chile. Bueno.
To stave off hunger, I had a couple of slices of their white raisin bread and some plain white slices. Bueno.
First: lobster bisque. I know it's mostly cream and who knows how much lobster is really in there but it was tasty, creamy and not too salty. Bueno.
The Summer Arugula Salad with watermelon, balsamic dressing and freshly ground pepper. Light and refreshing. Bueno.
My entree was the Prime Aged New York Steak a la Stone -16 ounce sliced with sauteed onions and roasted. it's arranged neatly with a slice of toast underneath for cushioning. Bueno.
We had two orders of the Three Cheese Potatoes Au Gratin. By far, the most popular on our table. Sauteed Wild Mushrooms, Hash Browns, Creamed Spinach, and Half & Half: cottage fries and fried onions were passed around and around the table. Bueno. Bueno, Bueno, Bueno, and Bueno.
The dessert tray was presented to us and a few of us got something. Carrot Cake here is really good. I think the bar for carrot cake has been set. Just look at how tall is it (see pics). Bueno.
I also had a bite of T's keylime pie. Bueno.
Pricey. No bueno.
But someone richy-rich footed the entire bill. Muy Bueno!!!
see pics. Bueno. jk.
The Palm has a very mixed crowd. Jolly old retired people, downtown corporate folk, regular downtown residents, cute kids on their fancy dates...
Cute kids and fancy dates? Oh, that was us. Kidding. He wasn't cute. I kid again! I was the not cute one.
A while back, I went out with some dude who wanted to take me to the Liberty Grill for dinner. They were closed tho, and The Palm was nearby. He said this place was really good, so off we went! Good set up. Nice booths, nice bar, lots of TVs (for sports of course), It's crazy busy during basketball season. It may seem like a 'fancy' place, but it's not really. There are people more dressed up, and people that are super casual, and nobody cares. That's cool.
I love the caricatures on the walls. There are drawings of 'local notables' and celebrities as well. The whole place is covered in them. I saw a caricature of Mr. Villaraigosa. Cool. They should draw up his mistress as well. We sat in a booth at the bar, it's more casual there. I had a few beers..around $6 each.
I had a feeling this guy was gonna fight me for the bill, so I just got an appetizer in case he won. I didn't have much of an appetite anyway, so no big. I got the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna, served on a seaweed salad. It was really good, but the surprising thing was that the seaweed salad thing was even better than the tuna. I wish there was more of that! A lot of the items on the menu are expensive, but not all. The price range varies quite a bit, so you could in fact eat here without crying when the bill comes. My tuna was around $12.
The companion got the Veal Parmigiana, which was pretty big. He inhaled that thing. Whoa. I guess he was hungry! The sucky thing is that it didn't come with a side. What's up with that? Most of the other entrees have sides, but not this one. They should ALL come with one. Crazy people.
According to the 'friend', a lot of the basketball players like to eat here. So any of you Lakers or Clippers stalkers could probably catch a glimpse of one of the players here, especially during the NBA season. I think it would be fun to watch a game here. I can imagine how loud the fans are! I'll be back sometime in October!
My sugar daddy (read - boss) takes me here when he's feeling all "celebratey". And I'm all for it. It is goooooood.
I know some people dislike it. But I've had nothing less than steller service and food here. Oh, and the cocktails. My oh my - a martini here is about double of what you get elsewhere. So be very, very careful.
Here's how we roll: First cocktails. Then the hearts of palm salad. Then he gets the gigantic T-bone. I get the gigantic lobster. Then we get our surf and turf on and work it baby! I love the creamed spinach.
I have yet to enjoy dessert here because I'm always done in by the meat and lobster. But some day...
Expensive! Excellent service! Nicely prepared food!
I have been here a few times and this time I went for the lobster...WOW! It was HUGE and perfectly cooked! Juicy, tender, succulent...loved it! My friend ordered a steak, med. rare, and he was excited about it...cooked to perfection (he said). Nice wine list, even though we did not order any...stuck to cocktails before dinner instead.
Really, really pricey...but, every now and then we owe ourselves a treat!
This is a sad review. If you don't like sad reviews, move along now. Nothing to see here.
I remember this place from 25 years ago. It was clean and sparkling and VERY exclusive. You had to be somebody famous to get your picture on the wall. The lobster was an "affair" - you called ahead and gave them your preparation instructions, and everything was ready and truly excellent. The service was outstanding and the staff put any other wait staff to shame with their attentiveness. They made you feel as though you were the only person in the restaurant. I used to take friends/family/first dates -- or anyone that I was looking to impress-- there.
Now it's a dive. The service was just so-so, and the food wasn't very good. The lobster isn't what it used to be. I swear they cooked it in the dishwater that they washed the plates in. The horseradish tasted as though they used real horse, and the baked potato was not washed prior (or even after) baking. The prices are way too much for the swill they serve.
Oh, and remember the part about having to be famous to get your picture on the wall? Well, anyone can get there picture on the wall now. I don't mean in a "go-out-and-get-famous-and-then-come-back-often-an d-make-friends-with-the-manager" kind of way. Now all you have to do is come back like 100 times in a year and they'll put you up on their wall. Jeez...I don't even go into MY kitchen 100 times in a year!
If you don't mind shelling out LOTS of money for food that is sub-Pinks, head to the Palm. Personally, I still think that you could do much better if you wanted to impress someone on a first date - like Pastis or Taste.
This is a chain and it shows. I started off with the Tomato Capri salad. It had no taste. The mozzarella was not very moist though it was supposed to be buffalo mozzarella. The tomatoes seemed like I went to Ralph's, bought the biggest tomato I could find and cut it into inch thick slices. This salad is supposed to be delicate and flavorful. It was neither.
I had a glass of the Melbec which was good. The Russian River Valley Pinot Noir was ok too. I had the linguine marinara and the sauce was nothing spectacular. The linguine was a little over cooked.
One thing that irked me the whole time was that the waiter kept telling me about the times for the show at the Staples Center. We told him we knew the set times and all and the rush factor was still present. We had 2 hours!
This is one of those restaurants you would go to if you are livin' large. With high prices comes high snob appeal. This Palm has a prime location near the Staples Center. Several private rooms are available to host large parties.
The Palm is well known for their steaks and lobster. As several other reviewers have noted the strip steak is a little tough athough I ordered it medium rare. The sides don't come with the entree and are served family style.
Valet parking is available on 11th Street. Be sure to get parking validation.
The Palm is a solid steakhouse but it didn't impress me enough to consider it to be the very best.
I've never been to dinner here but lunch was very reasonable.
I had the twin fillets and it only cost $20. Where in Los Angeles can you find steak for $20's other than Norms?
I was told the lobster is excellent so one of these days I'll go back to sample it.
I love the half circle table and tv with veal parmiginia. Busy but good service always.
After two attempts, I've decided the food here is not even close to matching the price. Steak is okay, lobster salad is beyond mediocre. The lobster isn't that great and there's no interest in the other components to make up for it. The dressing is oily and flavorless, yuck.
There is just no reason to pay these prices for this food. The Palm also feels very much like a high-end diner. I mean, the atmosphere is relaxed and it can be fun, but it doesn't feel like a nice place. The massive desserts carted around on trucks, for instance. I'm sure they're alright, but dessert should be special when your dinner costs this much. Otherwise, service is friendly and a lot of people seem to like it, but I won't be going again unless I get dragged.
I really really wanted to like this place. I was so charmed by the artwork on the walls. It's really unfortunate that the food was so shitty.
If you have been to The Palm, you know it's not exactly cheap. Of course, taste is the most important, but I also value presentation when it comes to food. The food presentation here was equivalent to that of a cheap Chinese restaurant. Pathetic.
I ordered yellowtail, and my coworker ordered the special of the day, ribeye steak medium rare. When our food came, I felt pretty bad for my coworker--he received an extremely thin, dried out, overcooked piece of meat that looked incredibly unappetizing. My yellowtail was okay but nowhere near great.
I guess I was just expecting so much more from this place because I really loved the atmosphere. Bleh.
So the food was great... I had the 8oz filet and my friend got the veal dinner. We also ordered the seared ahi tuna and had key lime pie for dessert.
It was my friend's birthday and I'm horrible at picking out presents, so I just bought her dinner.
Everything would've been great except that our waiter turned out to be the biggest douche bag ever.
I'm used to service at Korean restaurants where you hit a button and the waiter drags ass to eventually get out your order. So it's not like a waiter has to drop his pants and bend over to keep me happy.
This guy at the Palm was confrontational the whole night. When I ordered regular water he asked me 5 times if I was sure I didn't want wine or sparkling water. Then he comes back and says, here's your tap water, you sure you still want it?
Part of the fun when going to an overpriced steakhouse is good service, and dealing with a waiter that has what what in the butt just ruins the experience.
Honestly, one star is harsh because when you go it probably won't be as bad. But it's not like there's any logic to my star ratings anyway. On a positive note the Lakers won.
The Phoenix Mercury beat the Sparks, my GF's cousins drove down to LA for the game, and we had a perfect dinner at The Palm. We ordered a prosciutto, fig and melon starter, a large filet mignon medium rare and halibut with a side is mash and spinach; the four of us all shared and it was perfect.
We will go back whenever we go to the Staple Center for a game.
I like the Palm because I know exactly what I'm going to get. Good service, solid food, a well poured drink, and a satisfying feeling at the end of my meal. True, you won't be all WOW with culinary creativity or the hottest waitresses in the world, but the people here are pros and are consistent. If you spend 10K here you can get your picture on the wall too so eat up.
The Surf N Turf here is to DIE for!! it's a combo of your favorite steak + either a full or half order of lobster. i absolutely LOVE the lobster here, and their steak is REALLY good too! it's for special occasions only because it's quite pricey, but it's sooooo good!! I always split the Surf N Turf with my boyfriend and it's more than enough food!
