A very pleasant surprise!
We ordered on their bizarre online ordering system and it worked perfectly! (I love how on their website it says, "A real person is in charge of your order." As if robots can sniff out tangerine chicken from a fried rice?)
We ordered: Steamed Potstickers, Sweet & Pungent Shrimp, Tangerine Chicken, and the Steamed Vegetables.
Although this place is MUCH PRICIER than I'd normally like to spend on Chinese food, I have to admit the QUALITY of the food was far and away better than the competition. As others have mentioned, the chicken is indeed gorgeous white meat in the tangerine chicken, not gnarly brown sphincter meat. The veggies were fresh and the shrimp was sans poop shoot. These are all trappings of good food in my book.
Our delivery guy was INCREDIBLY NICE! He thanked us several times for ordering from The Palace. He apologized for being a little late. Was he? Ok??!
The hilarious part was getting a small container of what seemed to be liquid MSG. I can only assume it was to pour all over the steamed veggies. What a nice option it is putting all the sodium on the side. I'll be ordering from there again when I need some expensive Chinese food!
We ordered our food online, which worked out okay. Ended up picking the food up because a $30 minimum seemed insane. We got a 10% discount that wasn't available if you had it delivered. Also didn't have to tip. It ended up coming out to $28 dollars anyway. What?
Food was all right. Nothing special at all. We went inside and the place looks fancy. The guy who greets you says things like, "Please sign your receipt at your leisure." So I guess the Palace is trying to be worth that amount of money. It's just not.
Sesame chicken was eh. Very sticky and sweet. Wonton soup was so tiny for $3. I was shocked. In NY that same amount of wonton soup would be 1.50. We didn't get eggrolls because they were 7 bucks! Budda's Delight was good but also not that special for $9.
We went here because we were lazy and I guess we deserved a mediocre experience. It's nice they have a parking lot in Los Feliz and that was probably the most exciting part of our trip. It's probably the best Chinese food you can find around here.
This place used to be called Chi Dynasty, but from what I've pieced together, the landlord wanted to renegotiate the rent, and instead, the owner of the restaurant decided to relocate down the street. Some of the waiters and chefs that had worked at Chi for a long time teamed up and decided to pony up the higher rent and open their own restaurant in the same place, serving the same great recipes. They call it The Palace.
So here's the dilemma: Should my loyalties lie with the owner of the original restaurant, or with the staff that had always served me so well, with such delicious food? I say try them both and decide for yourself.
I chose the Palace. My favorite dishes there include the incredible tangerine chicken (if you want more breading and lower quality chicken, go to Panda Express), the sweet and pungent shrimp (sticky and irresistible morsels of delight), and the green beans (crisp and savory). I rarely get anything else, as these three always deliver complete satisfaction.
Do not confuse this place with a standard chinese takeout restaurant. The quality of the food demands that it be eaten immediately. Eat there and you will not be disappointed!
very tasty, great service, a little pricey compared to others of similar qualitu
Love this place. The dumplings are downright addictive. The service is fantastic -- they treat their regulars like family. The menu is standard Chinese fare, but exceptionally well prepared and presented. There was some hub-bub when Chi Dynasty left this location and Palace moved in. The end result is both Palace and Chi live on in Los Feliz. The food loving denizens of Los Feliz win.
Food and service is good but martinis are really bad. Overall a good dinner option, we had two different chicken plates, an appetizer and shrimp fried rice, all of which were good. I had to send back my dirty martini because it tasted horrible. I changed it to regular martini and upgraded the vodka, but it still was not good. They were far too liberal with the vermouth I think. I still recommend it, just stick with beer.
i'm sick and i want some hot and sour soup!
i remembered this place in los feliz having a good rep, so i went to the site.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME FOR ME THAT AN ON-LINE ORDERING SYSTEM HAS WORKED -- and worked flawlessly.
i had a friend pick it up for me, seeing as i am horribly bed-ridden, and bring it to me. the pick-up time was 9:15 and it was (apparently) on time completely.
the hot and sour soup really hit the spot. so did the string beans, the ginger curry chicken (highly recommended!!), and the wonton soup, too. i'm a soup freak.
VERY NICE PALACE.
I really love the Chinese from this place. It's not greasy and doesn't taste like it's full of MSG. I've tried a variety of dishes including beef/broccoli, kung pao chicken, tangerine chicken and chicken lo mein and I would highly recommend any of them. My favorite dish there is the simple shrimp and broccoli. The sauce is very light but tasty and the shrimp are plentiful and cooked to perfection. They are very juicy and fresh.
I've eaten in only once - the decor reminds me of Chinese places in a suburban town - not LA or modern at all. I normally order take out - the food is ready usually within 20 minutes and it piping hot. Apparently, ordering via online is not recommended but I can't imagine doing that anyway if you have a phone and the ability to speak to a live person!
YUM - I think I want this for dinner tonight!!
This place is amazing! Everything I have tried has been super tasty, the staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful AND the main dude (who is always welcoming up front) can fold a moo shu pancake like nobodies business! The restaurant can also make most of their soups vegetarian, if you ask. Some of my favorites include: sizzling rice soup, mixed seafood lettuce cups, steamed veggie dumplings and the moo shu veggie dish. The ambience inside is quite nice, with a bustling fish tank up front, lots of seating, red decor and appropriately dim lighting. This is the perfect place to catch up with your pals or have a lovely date night...as it's rarely over crowded so a reservation isn't needed.
***DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE***
STAY AWAY!!!!
After spending the day sick on the couch, I just tried placing an order for delivery using their online ordering system. Here are the problems I had:
1) There is a $30 minimum for delivery. (Seriously, for Chinese food?)
2) I ordered at 6:30 - the system said my food would be delivered at 7:15. At 7:35 I called to ask where our order was and was told that they hadn't received the order until 7:15 but STILL hadn't started our order. They then proceeded to tell us that it would be ANOTHER THIRTY TO FORTY-FIVE MINUTES BEFORE OUR FOOD WOULD BE DELIVERED (we live less than a mile from the restaurant) THIS MEANS OUR ORDER WOULD HAVE BEEN DELIVERED OVER AN HOUR AFTER ORIGINALLY PROMISED!!
3) When we asked why it would take so long for our food to arrive we were told that it was because we had ordered steamed dumplings. SO we told them to take the dumplings off the order and bring our food anyway. They said that they wouldn't do that because OUR ORDER WOULDN'T MEET THE $30 MINIMUM FOR DELIVERY!
I ended up canceling our order and will NOT EVER CALL / VISIT / OR OTHERWISE PATRONIZE THIS RESTAURANT EVER!
STAY AWAY! WISH I COULD GIVE LESS THAN 1 STAR.
I don't really eat Chinese food because it makes me feel bloated and sick. Any place that has a hand written sign that says "NO M.S.G." is lying. In fact they probably use more. But this place is my favorite Chinese place in LA. My girlfriend has been coming here practically her whole life, back when it was the old Ming Dynasty (that relocated down the street right next to Rustic Inn).
The food is great, I recommend the sesame chicken, the chicken salad and and the hot and sour soup. The service is exemplary. The Chinese Maitre d even speaks Armenian! The food is prepared timely and is moderately priced. Valet parking in the adjacent lot or you can park in the street although it can be tough sometimes.
5 stars. easily.
I've been coming to the Palace since before it was the Palace, and I never knew about their lunch specials. You have to ask about them. For the love of God... you should ask. Today's special was Curry Chicken. It came with Yellow Curry Chicken, Hot and Sour soup, Veggie Fried Rice and a Veggie Eggroll. It is plenty of food, and I think its like $7.99, which isn't bad for a lunch special at a sit-down chinese joint not in Chinatown.
A few weeks ago the lunch special was a Ginger-Garlic Chicken. This was also VERY good. Very garlicy, but soooo good.

First off, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that The Palace is the best Chinese food in… Read more »
I went to eat here with my meetup crew last week and we had a good experience. There was a variety of food selections and the food I ordered was good. The restaurant was pretty clean and spacious.
I love this place. It's one of my favorite Chinese food restaurants in LA. The food is great and reasonably priced. The service is unreal. Everyone is extremely nice and helpful. GO TO THE PALACE RIGHT NOW!!
Ehhh.
Their dumplings were delicious, as dumplings should be. It's hard to mess up a dumpling. Carb-wrapped meat, as a general rule, will be delicious: Ravioli, corn dogs, pierogi, calzones, dumplings....wondrous food stuffs, one and all.
Their tangerine chicken was not great, but it was 'not great' in an INTRIGUING way. Under-breaded, and under-seasoned, yes. But inside? Delicious, moist, high-quality white meat!
Huh? Very odd. Alas, not very good. That chicken died in vain.
Also eliciting a "huh?" although maybe with an added exclamation point or two, is the $30 delivery minimum. Um. Huh?!! I live within a mile of you, The Palace. If I elect to have my food delivered, you are allowed to charge me a Lazy Tax, to be sure, but that seems excessive.
Overall, a valiant effort, but The Palace is probably not entering my delivery rotation.
Wonderful food. I've only lived in LA for 3 months, so I can't make rave pronouncements like: "This is the best in LA", but it is damn good Chinese food. I had the Sichuan hotpot and it was wonderful. Very spicy, but not in a "let's laugh at the stupid American who orders spicy food" sort of way, it was just powerfully flavored. My companion had the Sesame Chicken which was a step above the battered and fried substances that you find at mom-and-pop takeout places, and had interesting flavors. The portions were big enough that we'll be eating this food for the next few days, and I'm excited about the prospect.
My only slightly negative comment is that their house wine isn't very good. I didn't even finish my glass. Otherwise, this is an excellent Chinese option in Los Feliz, and maybe after a couple of years here, I'll have the street cred to proclaim it "Best in LA" Keep in mind that the prices are a bit high, we paid $63 for two people, 1 mediocre glass of wine each. Not that I'm complaining - the meal was worth the price.
Another vote for The Palace.
We were in the hood and I had done some prior Yelping to suss the scene before catching some local spoken-word stuff. We went to The Palace, and loved it. Interior feels old school, nice slightly cavernous, but still warm. The food and service was very contemporary---while also still being old school in the sense of helpful and friendly w/o being annoying.
The 1/2 pressed duck was great. Unfamiliar to me but not to my dining companion, it was served ala moo shoo: WIth pancakes and hoisen sauce. Mmmm. I went more healthy with the simple fish dish. THis was sole accompanied by some veggies. White or brown rice is avail. And our app was really good, if unnecessary: Good portions.
EDIT: May 21, '08
I thought I had wine, but that was at our next venue up the street. Have received sensitive message from Dennis of the Palace who doesn't like some of my descriptions. I thought I wrote a rave!?
Great food, but expensive. And the $3.00 delivery fee has got to go. Everybody else delivers for FREE.
This place is a great place to grab some takeout in the evenings. It's online ordering system is super convenient and they are always on time whether the order is for pick up or delivery. they say it will be there by 8:45, it is there by 8:45 and not a minute late.
The staff is extremely friendly and personable. If you are waiting on your take out order they will offer to entertain you by teaching you some chinese! Its cute and kinda fun to learn to say "thank you my food" in mandarin.
Anything on their chicken menu is very appetizing, as well as a good number of their soups. My fav is the hot and sour. Those, plus an order of noodles with brown sauce and i have a very complete, satisfying, and delicious dinner plus left overs for lunch the next day!
I would like to dine at the restaurant some time too, their decor looks so inviting and energizing. Plus I really enjoy staring at their salt water fish tank while i wait for my food. No really, i am not being sarcastic! Dory speaks to me....
So, after a hard day at work on a Monday night (1/14/08), my best friend (Rosy - not a Yelper) and I decided that eating Chinese food was the only way to salvage a long and tiring day.
However, hauling our asses all the way to Hollywood and Highland to eat at Le Oriental Bistro (my favorite Chinese restaurant since I was 9 years old) was too daunting a task for two ravenous females. Hence, we decided to try something new.
So, The Palace is the establishment that took over the Chi Dynesty location. Seeing as how I have never eaten at Chi Dynesty, this review will not be a comparison.
I will say, however, this place stirs my tastebuds like no other.
O.K. a teeny tiny lie, but Le Oriental Bistro (formarly The China Sea on Hollywood and Highland) is too far for some quickie Chinese.
I use the word quickie lightly since the waitstaff, under no circumstances, rushes you to decide on what to eat, order and consume your meal. This is a good thing since it takes me 30 min to order my main entree.
The decor is soo pretty. We came to a consesus that this was a nice (o.k. great) place for a date. Warm, cozy, intimate, and frankly, very zen. At first I felt a little weird walking in with my jeans, gap t-shirt, granny sweater and boots (I would have dressed up a teeny bit more) due to the nicely decorated venue, but felt at ease when I spotted two more tables wearing jeans and sneakers.
We knew that we wanted to start off with some Wonton soup because, well, let's face it, it's the only true way to judge a Chinese restaurant. I mean, how hard is it to mess up a Wonton Soup? Well, we needn't worry. The Palace ROCKED the soup. Thankfully, they brought out the soup first since we were starving and had not decided on our entrees yet.
We ordered Beef Fried Rice (Rosy ALWAYS orders this no matter what Asian restaurant we are in), Honey Bbq Pork, Steamed Dumplings, Ginger and Scallion Chicken and streamed white rice. We loved the food. It was tasty and savory and hot and what we will assume was freshly made -- no microwave stuff.
The staff is soooo nice and soooo attentive. Seriously. A very stiff upper lipped Asian man, which we assumed was the manager (seemed like it) , even came over to ask us what we needed and if we were enjoying our meal. Sweet man. Charming. Funny too, in a stoic sort of way...
I love this restaurant. Will it take the place of my beloved Le Oriental Bistro (The China Sea)? Nope. I have waaaay too many good memories of the cuisine and family events in that place. But, The Palace is my new Chinese restaurant to head to when I have a last minute, close to my home, craving.
Which is often...
I was a big fan of Chi's Dynasty and therefore was a bit apprehensive to try it's replacement at the old location, but The Palace definitely pleased. Apparently a lot of Chi's staff actually stayed at the old location, including (according to our waiter) the Head Chef, which is interesting. If you were ever a Chi's regular you'll probably recognize a lot of the waiters... and yes, they still wear tuxes.
Short and sweet, our food was awesome. I didn't notice any difference between my favorites at Chi's and the same dishes at The Palace. The sizzling rice soup is insane, and the Chinese Chicken salad seemed to be exactly the same recipe (which is the best Chinese Chicken Salad I've ever had). Some of the old favorites have new names (the Orange Chicken is now Tangerine Chicken) but are just as good.
I was actually a little weirded out by some of the new decorations... they replaced a lot of the more "traditional" Chinese style decorations on the walls with these sort of 1980's/iPod ad looking mixed media paintings, which weren't really my taste. Then again, when has a restaurant's decor ever affected the flavor of the food? Not sure what I'm complaining about... the detraction is slight. Regardless, the good news (decor wise) is that the fish tank is still there, which makes me happy.
I'm excited to try The Palace again, and also plan on stopping by Chi's to see if they are still my #1. All in all, looks like they have a worthy competitor on the block...
When this place used to be the "Chi Dynasty" - we went once and I remember that I really enjoyed my meal. I thought the food was overpriced (I am attached to the idea that Chinese food should be cheap... ) but the flavors were flavorful, fresh, light... not overdone like in some other fancy faux-Chinese (PF Chang's type) restaurants where every dish is really gooey sticky and either too salty or too sweet.
My recent dining experience here (as "The Palace") didn't leave me so thrilled. My BF insisted on ordering Mongolian Lamb... and it could've been beef or chicken or pork, who knows ... the meat looked and tasted unidentifiable because it was so overcooked in that sticky sweet sauce. I never liked "Mongolian Beef" anyway.
The lettuce wrap was kinda bland... and ok, the garlic string beans were not too bad.
Service was ok. After we were seated we were approached by FOUR different waitpersons to take our drinks order when we had already ordered. And then when it was time for refills, they forgot what tea we we were drinking. The waiters were all super friendly so I am not really dissing them here. There were SO MANY waiters though running around serving the same tables... I guess I'm saying they should've been more organized. Like say... assign only ONE waiter to each table.
All in all, yeah... I thought "The Palace" was overpriced for mediocre Chinese food. It's a pity that there are no other Chinese restaurants in my neighborhood.
In general Chinese food in LA is not as good as in NY but The Palace helps bridge that gap. A cut above most Chinese restaurants the staff was pleasant, attentive and even fun! The atmosphere is also a cut above. You'll find the prices are slightly higher but the experience is worth it. Yes, this is more than just eating...this is a dining experience. A good place for a date! All the dishes tried were good and the cook will accommodate special requests. I'm not going to tell you this is THE best you've ever tasted but all in all worth trying and returning!
Even though you're required to order a minimum of $30 for your food to be delivered, it took The Palace less than ten minutes to have your food ready, they're very considerate and generous with your to-go food, even the drink itself. When I came to pick up my food, the receptionist was very friendly and enthusiastic.
I lived in the neighborhood for a long time and would eat at Chi Dynasty quite often because I am a Jew that loves Chinese and it is simply the only Chinese restaurant in or around Thai Town. It was okay but never great.
First, I must tell you that, I do believe I am Chinese on some level. I have been to China and it was like a homecoming. Whenever I am sick there is nothing I crave more than 2 large Styrofoam containers of Hot and Sour Soup. There is no Chicken Soup for this soul.
Anyway, whenever I eat at a new Chinese restaurant I am sure to have a bowl of H & S soup so I can do some preliminary research in case I get a stuffy nose / sore throat/ I hate the rain and am going to pretend I am sick occasion. You would be surprised how often I feel one of the three.
Last night was no exception. I started with a bowl of hot and sour and it was simply delicious. One of the best bowls I have had in LA. Now last night was strange. I was hanging out with my ex, which I do from time to time, and at some point we realized it was our would-be 3 year anniversary. We have been broken up for the last 7 months so it wasn't really anything but I will take any excuse to celebrate. I told the waiters in tuxes and they had no idea what to do with the information. I ordered a Chinese beer and put my "I am in a relationship and I am wearing the pants" hat on (not a literal hat nor what the Scientologists call a hat). I ordered our entire meal. We had steamed meat dumplings to start, sweet and pungent shrimp, garlic sugar snap peas, and steamed rice. I also disclosed to the bus boy and the patrons at the restaurant that this was my "Would-be 3 year anniversary". The guy at the next table was flattering enough to ask me, "Does this mean you are single?" I took a big swing of Tsingtao and pointed in my ex's face and said while laughing, "I am still so much better than you."
It is no wonder I am single. It is a wonder that I have never been the dumpee.
The Sweet & Pungent shrimp came close to the Slippery Shrimp at Yang Chow, which as we all know is the best of the best. Fresh and yummy ingredients in everything we (excuse me, I) ordered.
Minus 1 star for keeping Chi Dynasty's god awful decor.
At the end of the meal the waiter asked if we (excuse me, I) wanted dessert. I passed as I had Scoops on the brain. The waiter then smiled politely and said, "Well, you did good...That's for sure!" I couldn't agree more I finished every plate and denied myself one of my favorite things Chinese leftovers. I will be back, sadly, on a not so joyous occasion. What could be less fun then a would be anniversary celebration dinner? A sore throat that requires Hot and Sour soup, that's what.
Delicious food. Big portions so I recommend to share everything, inlcuding their one person rice portion. Really nice people and fast service. Good ambiance with their red walls and decor. They have their own big parking lot and that's rare in Los Feliz.
braden d was right! the won-ton soup was the worst i've ever had and i've been to every single chinese restaurant in the whole entire greater LA Oxnard area. they have better Chinese food in the Owen's Valley. the kung pao chicken was bland and covered in a thick syrup more disgusting than any i've had at all the strip mall budget organ meat vendors in the various armpits of the city. yuck. and expensive. please avoid, thanks.
Old school Chinese. Great food, great service, great value. The wait staff is polite and attentive - all wearing tuxes and the atmosphere is a throw back to what I remember growing up in NYC and going to Chinatown for family dinners on Sunday - deep reds, pink and formal plates that aren't whisked away the second you sit down for fear you might break one. The best part is the food was fresh and flavorful - but not overdone like some places do with sauce or over cooking the vegetables - try The Palace and then walk down the block for to Los Feliz Pastry for dessert.
The Palace is LA's answer to Our Place in New York. The dumplings are bomb.
slightly better than the other chinese down the street. this place has better service. but nothing spectacular
a place to go in los feliz if you are too lazy to make the drive to chinatown to get a proper high-end chinese meal. a perfectly decent place to go for a family-style dinner if price is no object, but for some reason it just steams me when a place like this tries to soak their customers with extremely high prices just because they have nice linen and silverware. when i looked at the prices on the menu for a moment i thought i was at an indian restaurant...
This place used to be called the Chi Dynasty (which moved down the street into what used to be Eastside Records) but is now The Palace. With the decor inside not changed much, the food choice has. It is billed as "Authentic Chinese Cuisine" which is for those of us who don't know the difference between all of the styles of chinese cooking. I never got that technical about it but it's all about region and spice. All of that aside, the food was great! I tried the Tangerine Chicken, Lo Mein, Potstickers, and Scheczwan Beef (sp?). All the safe dishes yes, but if they were all good it would be an adventure to try different ones in the future. They were all awesome so I will be back. the menu is a bit pricey with entrees around $14 and appetizers around $8-9. This seems to be the going prices these days which makes going out to dinner less frequent, for me anyway. Dress is casual to fancy depending on your mood. Just have fun!
wow. this was goodness. i hope you do not plan on being in a hurry when you embark on this delicious journey. i was starving when we got there, and let me say that it didn't help that i couldn't make up my mind. it took a while to get the food once i did. backtracking now, there was so much waitstaff it was redic. they asked to take our orders like 3 times! the jasmine tea is tasty and the chinese chicken salad that they bring you is nice too. we started with the veggie steamed dumplings. WOW! SO GOOOD! i am drooling thinking about them while i type at work. i should have just gotten a few orders of those. trust. i decided on the sesame chicken which is really orange chicken fried goodness without the super orange tasting situation. i was not aware that it was fried goodness and would have prolly not gotten it, but oh well it was really good. we also got the sizzling seafood. YUMMMM! with black bean sauce, i am looking forward to eating that later, for sure. lastly, we got the seasonal veggie, chinese broccoli, you know, tastes good, tastes like it usually tastes at chinese restaurants. you know? i was so so full though, not a downside as it was my fault.... just part of the glowing review. nice vibe in there too, darkish and romantic, chill, plus valet parking as well, easy peasy.
