There is a trail head for the Pacific Crest Trial- that's the trail that runs continuously from Canada to (through?) Mexico for over 3000 miles- just outside Anza on Highway 74- on the back way to Palm Springs.

In terms of access to a classic high desert environment, its a pretty easy get- just keep your eye peeled after you switch from the 371 to the 74 outside of Anza (this is heading from San Diego/Temecula to Palm Springs).  There's a parking lot  on the north side of the 74, and a little sign describing the trail.  The first fifteen minutes out are flat and easy to walk in normal clothes, you don't need hiking boots or water.  About ten minutes down the path you get a nice view of the surrounding area, and the vegetation along the path is plentiful and interesting.  Word of caution- watch out for the ground cactus- it can sneak up on you!
