I love this little place, albeit a little pricey. Thats just the price you have to pay for some vintage pieces. Where else are you going to find a 35 year old rotary orange phone?
Believe it or not, there are some hidden gems in there. I bought a beautiful classic 70's oil painting for 40 dollars and let me tell you, it really ties the room together.
Even if your not buying anything you just want to get some ideas, take stroll through my favorite neighborhood and stop in. Often times I see things that I can recreate at home. Very inspirational!
Wonderful selection of items in this place. Even though they concentrate on decades that I'm not terribly interested in they still always manage to have items I want despite my lack of love for the 50s-70s. There are definitely pricier pieces in here, but even then some are worth it, like a space age looking record player they once had (which I would have snagged had I'd known that they took deposits on pricier items). Generally though I can walk in with 20 bucks and walk out with one or two things I'm totally into. The other plus for me is that they have a corner hich is dedicated to vinyl sold by "Open Mind Music", remember that place? So even if I don't find anything amongst their knick knacks I can always go home with some vinyl or a "rare"music DVD.
I do love this place. They always have something fun in the window and it always lures me in. Every time I go in there, there's something I want. You have to kind of dig around a bit because their collection just seems to grow. The staff is friendly and helpful too.
Dig this place. You can get lost for an hour, just browsing around, imagining new possibilities. SO much to see and they have a little bit of almost everything. As an interior designer, I appreciate the iconic furniture & old fashioned accents that give a home character.... plus the people are super cool & friendly. ;)
Well, lots of cool stuff in here. Not exactly my years, but still pretty awesome. However, just was too expensive!
Really great selection of different vintage items and mid-century modern furniture, with a bunch of other random stuff thrown in. The space is leased out to different vendors by the super sweet/funny woman who owns the place, so they probably get a lot of new and different stock often. The only thing that bugged me was that none of the shelving units were for sale, which the owner admitted was a bit of a faux pas since all vendor items should be available. I'll come back to check what's new anyway, I dig!
Since moving to the neighborhood, I've been into this place several times. It bums me out that no one greets me when I walk in the door as most friendly, local store owners like to do. It's definitely up my alley in terms of mid-century style, but not so up my alley in terms of price. I have found much cheaper - and impeccable - stuff on craigslist. And they apparently won't negotiate on the price of anything below $200. I found a rug that would have been great in my place but it's marked $75 and FROM IKEA. I'll pass. I realize rugs are pricey but it's still Ikea (and this is the second overpriced Ikea item someone is posting about - pretty sure the ice cube lamp is still there too).
I'll probably be back in again, to browse around and leave empty-handed.
Of all the things I wanted to buy in this store, I managed to justify one purchase. I had a wedding to attend in the somewhat near future and needed a new frock. Low and behold, I stumbled upon the most perfect dress one Sunday afternoon, wandering around to work off some of the brunch.
There's a small selection of vintage clothing in perfect/near perfect condition. I spotted a beautiful custom 1960s Hawaiian hibiscus knee-length dress with the most fabulous pleated train. It was stunning (as confirmed by compliments left and right each time I wear it). As soon as I put it on, my friends commented that the dress looked as though it was made for me. I had to have it. The price was a bit high but after some negotiation and a little time spent waiting for the shop clerk (possibly owner) to call the former owner to check to see if my desired price was acceptable. Success! I spent the rest of the day running around with my head in the cloud, dreaming of the day I could debut my new dress.
I'll absolutely be back next time I need a new dress, a unique gift, or new home furnishings/accessories.
I was in the market for S&P shakers, a must have for every new apt right? I found these fabulous rustic looking wooden shakers. They are 4in tall cylinders with S and P dotted on the tops, perf.! I wasn't even looking but I found more! A retro set of canisters that I intend on using for sugar and flour (I don't bake or cook, but whatev). The containers are yellow and orange with large flowers on them. I was continually eying a red bulking lamp, but decided I should save something for my next visit.
I was about to check out when I saw it.............what? There are vintage clothes, shoes and bags here! No way! Yes, and they are in such great condition I couldn't help but scoop up a black vintage purse for myself.
Multiple vendors sell their items in this spot so you are truly getting a great variety of artwork, furniture, glassware, jewelery, and anything else you can imagine. If you love antiques you will find this place wonderful and charming, which it is!
Great selection of decently priced midcentury stuff. I've dropped some serious cash here and been more than satisfied with all my purchases!
"Pardon me...but may I buy my introduction back?"
"You should go far...and I hope soon."
"Do it tomorrow...you've made enough mistakes for today."
"What's on your mind? -If you'll forgive the overstatement."
"I'm not in the habit of forgetting faces...but for you I'll make an exception."
and my fave: "I could grow to dislike you intensely...but I'm not even going to bother."
No, these weren't overheard at a Yelp event, or even on Talk. They are quotes printed on 1 of 6 cocktail tumblers I found here for roughly 10 cents a quip.
The Other Shop is a "must" when in the neighborhood. The apparel in back is psychedisco fabulous! Last walkthrough seduced with a "Sculptura" telephone, a stack of 50s architecture mags, and Playboy's dubious gift to all for Christmas 1983 - naked Joan Collins.
The ever-helpful owners adhere to one expression amid the insults on our new-old tumblers: "It's real nice to be important...but it's real important to be nice."
Cute! Packed with goodies--from an 8-track player in the shape of an astronaut's helmet, olive green glass stuff from the 60s, a really cute shepard's crook (? I don't know why, but I really want it!), retro furniture, lamps and trinkets of all kinds. There's a decent selection of LPs, and a vintage clothes corner in the back.
We're moving tomorrow, so I'm excited about the prospect of coming back to buy myself little items in manner of housewarming.
My favorite.
The best. I am coveting so many things from there at the moment, I can't even list them all. Space is open and shoppable - prices are fair.
And it is right around the corner from my house!
Why is everyone so hesitant to give the other shop 5 stars? Too much Dansk furniture, but adorable, reasonably priced vintage clothing (and it is not all size 0!) and real designer shoes make this a great little stop on Divis. If you want affordable furniture, I say hit Mickey's Monkey. For everything else, there's this shop.
Perfect daytime date with Maria D: brunch at Le Metro, comic book perusing at Comix Experience & then you can buy me some YSL and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes along with some vintage postcards at The Other Shop. Followed by drinkies at the Page, of course. Coincidentally, two blocks from my house. I am sneaky.
This store is jam packed with well-preserved furniture and exciting decor. A good mix of typical mid-century pieces and more unique space-agey stuff. Though I tell myself I'm "just looking," I often find something that I can't live without.
Dudes, this place is peeeeeeemp. Hurrah! I like to take a moment to stop in here every time I pass by because they get new shit often. In fact, they have a sale pretty much every single month to clear out the old old stuff for the new old stuff. I once scored not only a sweet paint-by-numbers painting of german shepherds in its original frame (and sers like 16" x 18" or something), but an antique gold locket in pristine condition... both for circa $30 total! Purchases like these won't break the bank, folks.
However! There are often pieces of furniture on sale here for upwards of $300 that you could've sworn you saw at Goodwill for $15. Now, I certainly understand how much time and effort these antique-hunters put into tracking down awesome, hard to find goods, so I won't even ding 'em for it. The awesome sales, rare finds, and varied things to look at completely make up for it.
I rarely take the time to dig through the clothes because I just don't feel like it most of the time... but I've definitely browsed and come across designer labels for low prices, and in varied sizes to boot. Everything's sort of That Girlesque in style, but honestly, what else do you really need, folks?
I'm generally not really into antique stores because they smell bad and charge much much much too much, but this one seems to avoid both these faults, for the most part. Come here to window shop, at the very least.
If you think about touching the Danish credenza I have a crush on, I will enroll in karate classes and pay off the staff to find your address and kick your ass.
I suppose I could afford the things I want from The Other Shop if I started saving my money. But that's crazy.
The only thing wrong with this shop is that they just do not give me things.
Am I the only person who finds this place to be overpriced & overrated? Hell, I'm not even that overSTIMULATED when I'm in there. A place like this should make you feel like a kid in a candy store, but nearly everything they sell seems a bit useless to me.
Sure, if you're into extremely overpriced vintage 70s furniture, go for it.
I'd rather try my luck in a thrift store.
Pleasantly surprised! Great prices, FUN stuff. I like the fact that they will have whole sets of dishes and ashtrays and all of that kinda stuff. I hate going into a vintage place and only finding scraps. You can tell there's actual time and effort spent with every selection.
I'm planning on going back there to get a globe. It will undoubtedly be used as some kind of makeshift necklace holder.
I really like this place.
I purchased a coffee table here on a whim, and the price was decent as I scored it during a sale.
HOWEVER, the quality of the table? Notso great. It's probably a combination of me not regluing the joints when one popped out and putting my 30 lb tv on top of this fine piece. I just hope an earthquake doesn't kill it....
Most of the small items are comparable to other antique stores - everyone nowadays has pyrex and danish glass - but there are still a few stand outs!
I was rather impressed with several items in particular... The Other Shop has a great selection of lighting - chandeliers and sconces, etc, that I haven't really seen at any mid century boutiques before
There was also an INCREDIBLE China cabinet in really fine condition marked at a modest $250.
Staff is friendly and fitting for the shop. Also very flexible when you need to hold something until you can pick it up!!
I am always 100% pleased with the selection, the prices and customer service. Many vintage items in very nice condition.
I go in here pretty often looking for gifts, and knick knacks for my salon, and photo shoot eye candy.
More good news: They have all the vinyl from across the way housed under the same roof now. This is good for me because it occupies the hubby, while I browse to my hearts content :)
First off, I LOVE THIS PLACE! It's one of the few places left in SF were you can find quality collectables, Danish modern, and vintage clothing/jewelry for reasonable prices. I picked up some really cool necklaces and rings for Christmas and walked away with cool, thoughtful gifts for 4 people for under $100. Amazing...
I think it's a worker-owned collective so there are many dealers bringing in various treasures each week. Their stock is always changing and the store is busy. I learned the hard way to buy something right away if I like it. I once saw a Danish dresser there for a good price and I wanted to "think about it". I came back the next day to get it and someone else had bought it an hour earlier.. I was ready to start crying.
Go there... if even just to look.. the merchandise is entertaining!
If you are looking to accessorize your mid-century modern decor and don't want to look like you ordered your living room lock-stock-and-barrel from Herman Miller or Design Within Reach (which is out of my reach), stop in at the Other Shop for a touch of uncommon style.
This is one of very few places I can think of where you can still buy a cool vintage ashtray. Do they even make those anymore?
My man bought a set of bar glasses with a graph of the stock market from 1976-1986 and notable world events circling the glass (i.e.: Oil Hits $23.50 a barrel - 1979). It is so much fun to contemplate Patty Hearst's arrest or Carter's Energy report (the put-on-a-sweater speech) over bourbon and ice.
This is a pretty cool little shop, and that's coming from a heterosexual male that really doesn't like shopping. It's a collection of several vendors so there's a cool variety of old stuff here ranging from a 70 year old typewriter, to a clock radio from the 60's, to glassware, and so on. There's also a decent selection of LP's in the back, so even if you're not looking for the typical kind of item that such a store carries (if there is such a thing), it's still worth checking out if you're into vinyl. This place makes for a nice addition to the neighborhood.
I stumbled upon The Other Shop by chance and thought it deserved a look around. Typical antique shop, but perhaps a bit smaller than most. The treasures I found were chemistry beakers and glass jars. These are the same glass jars you find at most antique shops, but still I felt compelled to own the long skinny one with the cork top. And for only $10 bucks how could I refuse.
I also enjoyed this shop because there were about 4 little monsters running loose in the store touching and playing with everything despite the "THIS STORE IS NOT CHILD PROOF. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN" sign. Truly priceless.
Ah, the longing of youth. Well, sort of my youth...more like my parents 20's to be honest. Of course, I was in my single digits then, so I can sometimes remember the mushroom colored and shaped canisters, the orange shag carpet, stainless steel light fixtures, and colored tupperware.
Makes me wonder why I didn't just save my entire parents house circa 1972, put it in a storage unit, and open a store in San Francisco in 2002. Hhmmm...30 years of storage space x rent = oh my mind is digressing.
I bought the coolest word game from the 60's that had never been opened for my sister for Christmas, so she could fondly remember our family game nights when my Mom drank to much Chardonnay and tried to spell.
Minus one star for odd hours and some high prices, but 4 stars for simply reminding me of youth.
This place has so much cute stuff! Lots of vintage houseware and odds and ends. Some pieces of furniture. All very reasonable priced compared to the places on Valencia. I only wish hubby would let me go crazy and buy all those glasses and dishes (but then we would probably need an extra kitchen for everything).
I'm keeping an eye out for a lounge chair. I'm sure the perfect one will end up here waiting for me someday.
No 5 stars because I've yet to buy anything after all this browsing.
The last time I visited the Other Shop I had a much better time looking at the selections.
Sometimes the pickings are slim, but that just may be because I arrived too late. On my last visit I was very excited to see an Eames molded plywood screen, a classic looking Calder mobile and a Dorothee Becker Utensilo! Now that just puts me in a good mood.
This store is SO much fun! If I had a large apartment in need of being furnished, I'd definitely come here (and Mickey's Monkey, a few blocks away). Again, when I'm in the need to browse or make a purchase I come here, as it's right around the corner. In the front they have cool jewelry for men and women in the cases. I got my boyfriend really awesome cuff links and matching tie clip. For myself, I've gotten an amazing gold bracelet that looks like a belt buckle and some enamel bangles. In the back they have a small section of vintage clothing with some surprising brands like Versace and Dolce & Gabanna. The main room is cluttered with random home decor items and furniture- couches, love seats, desks, tables, phones, salt + pepper shakers, toaster ovens, lamps, paintings, etc. They also carry old records- I believe from Open Mind Music, which used to be across the street.
Love this shop, so many fun/quirky items and ideas, everything from vintage clothing to furniture to magazines and even some art. For example, on a recent visit, my wife bought a mincer for the kitchen and a pair of hot Gloria Vanderbilt heels. I was personally excited by their Playboy collection but sad to not see my birthdate issue available (the search goes on for May 1972!).
the basics: was rather excited to visit this shop. excitement dwindled upon entry. don't think i'll go back.
... drab, over-priced. ho hum.
The Other Shop is another one that I neglected. I was pleasantly shocked that it was affordable. If there's one thing that SF is good at, it's all the shops with vintage pieces maked up 700%. Fortunately, this is the "other shop". I chose a leather western bracelet for $9. The shop has a good selection of costume jewelery, funky dishware, some terrible artwork, and lots of cutesy junk. Oh, and the plastic desk stapelers adorned with your astrological sign took my breath away...
The Other Shop is a wonderful little gem that I don't get to visit as often as I'd like. It kind of reminds me of a more welcoming X-21. Lots of really random objects that you don't really NEED but WANT and really, what's the difference? Scores include: Eames shell chair for $40, vintage Vogue magazines, and teacups.
The Other Shop is one of the last affordable vintage shops in the city! I find myself browsing the constantly changing stock often. Mid-century galore, as well as other eras. In my quest for a couch, I was in here often, but the couches go fast! Go check it out, you'll find yourself smiling at all the cool knick-knacks!
This is a gem of a shop! I live close by and always admired it after hours and I kept saying to myself I've gotta come here. Finally a week before Xmas desperate for gifts, I went bezerek here! So many good things and the prices are just right. I got some great atomic glasses, a mushroom trivet from Sears and a clown switchplate. There are so many little nooks in the store to discover treasures so you have to look at every single thing. And they have new things every week-damn now I'm in trouble!
Always something I want here but often not for quite that price and not much dickering seems to be in the offing. Still a must stop if you are thinking of a little something mid-century. Modern Artifacts is San Francisco's gold standard here.
This place is full of eye candy! I love it. Lots of funky 60s and 70s pieces from light fixtures to ash trays to lamps to chairs and even a small used record collection section. One star off because some of it seems priced a wee bit high, but these finds are definitely cool.
This place is exactly between my house and my best friend's house so I stop by on regular occasions. The stock is ever changing and consists of used, mostly 70's furniture and funky household items. You will have to invest some time in this place, it takes a few visits, but then you walk away with amazing silver candlesticks for $20. I also buy people gifts from this place, they are always unique and affordable.
My favorite place for a mid century fossick. Definitely not as curated as den, but then, who cares, when the pricetags are far more accessible for us mere mortals who crave a little vintage style.
if i ever won the lottery, here's how it would play out:
i'd buy myself an incredible home in the city. doesn't have to be anything fancy. maybe just a cottage. with a yard.
then, i'd go to The Other Shop and go hogwild with my newly secured riches.
i would buy everything that tickled my fancy -- which would be 90% of the merchandise -- and i would then trick out my home(s) with the awesome new buys.
my new bungalows would be WICKED...
because that's what The Other Shop specializes in: anything and everything under the sun that makes vintage/retro fiends like me salivate. original art, jewelry, shoes, furniture, decor, kitchenwares, storage solutions, lighting fixtures, lamps, what have you. it's all eyecandy and it all makes me furiously covetous.
whomever calls the shots at The Other Shop has an excellent, discerning eye and impeccable taste. almost every item is quality...a treasure. the store is well laid-out and organized, unlike some places, where the merchandising is too daunting and uninviting.
and, like any respectable vintage shop, there's always stellar music on the stereo.
