We visited this shop for the first time today. It was a blast! Very reasonable prices for furniture (well, compared to the high prices in other antique stores in SF). They had other items that are seldom seen elsewhere, including lots of turntables (including an awesome portable version from the 70's). There were paintings, doo-dads and just plain cute/kitschy/fun stuff. We definitely will be back regularly to browse & find gifts for hip friends!

I still pop in here from time to time (or is it time after time?), and always leave with a smile, if not a purchase. You have to commit to browsing here, just like fortune hunting I'd suspect.
For instance, on my latest excursion I spotted a prosthetic arm, yes, for sale. I thought I'd wander the store a bit more and come back to it, only to find another brave soul fondling said limb. He bought it and thus won; I lost, but the thrill was all there.
If this is the "other" shop, I hesitate to ask what is "the" shop!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Ravena F.
I just adore this place for it's unusual antique, largely mid-century (I think) collection. There is such an eclectic assortment, that you really have to carve out some time to just browse. I particularly like their many fully in tact color-tinged glassware sets.
But what really prompted this review at this moment is the following:
There on one of the two small racks of clothing yesterday, was a gorgeous white, silk, fitted Chinese dress. Yes I said white. Yes it was my exact size. Yes I'm going to the "Like a Blizzard" Diddy style Yelp party tonight. Yes that dress is going to match my white wig and coat just perfectly. Huzzaaaaah!
You just never know what you're going to find here. -

A lot of items here are waay out of my price range, but when you really do some digging, you can find some great deals! Love their jewelry- my favorite pair of earrings from here and I recently bought a brooch/earring set for under $20! Sweet!

Cool shop.
Everything is scattered aimlessly, so you have to wander around to fully look through what they sell.
They had many great pieces, prices werent the lowest but its still a great shop to pick up one or two key vintage items to put a room together.
They had a mini vinyl selection which was also neat.
Didnt get what I was looking for, ill be back to look again nonetheless. -

LOVE THIS SHOP! The best one stop shopping for mid century items in SF! Being a 60's and 70's nut.....I walk through the door and want everything! The store is set up by many different venders. A brilliant selection of vintage glassware, barware, paintings, vinyl records, lighting,
cool stuff galore! I love the little glass case in the back with the awesome selection quirky vintage electronics. Anything mid century that you collect, or NEED....this is a place that you'll find it! -

The Other Shop is my go to for gifts. All sorts of gifts, for all sorts of people. And they're all super lucky for it. Unique and affordable mid century pieces. The people that work there are sweethearts and know a lot of information on obscure design pieces. I really dig the items from vendor labeled JET, who used to have his hand in X-21/ Sultana on 1stdibs, the now out of business GOLDMINE of brutalist rarities.

I usually don't find myself in this type of store, but I needed some fold out chairs to accommodate some extra guests. The Other Shop had exactly what I was looking for and a a great price. Staff is friendly and they have a nice selection of quality items. I'd go back for sure.

"Pardon me...but may I buy my introduction back?"
"You should go far...and I hope soon."
"Do it tomorrow...you've made enough mistakes for today."
"What's on your mind? -If you'll forgive the overstatement."
"I'm not in the habit of forgetting faces...but for you I'll make an exception."
and my fave: "I could grow to dislike you intensely...but I'm not even going to bother."
No, these weren't overheard at a Yelp event, or even on Talk. They are quotes printed on 1 of 6 cocktail tumblers I found here for roughly 10 cents a quip.
The Other Shop is a "must" when in the neighborhood. The apparel in back is psychedisco fabulous! Last walkthrough seduced with a "Sculptura" telephone, a stack of 50s architecture mags, and Playboy's dubious gift to all for Christmas 1983 - naked Joan Collins.
The ever-helpful owners adhere to one expression amid the insults on our new-old tumblers: "It's real nice to be important...but it's real important to be nice." -
Review from Maria D.
Why is everyone so hesitant to give the other shop 5 stars? Too much Dansk furniture, but adorable, reasonably priced vintage clothing (and it is not all size 0!) and real designer shoes make this a great little stop on Divis. If you want affordable furniture, I say hit Mickey's Monkey. For everything else, there's this shop.
Perfect daytime date with Maria D: brunch at Le Metro, comic book perusing at Comix Experience & then you can buy me some YSL and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes along with some vintage postcards at The Other Shop. Followed by drinkies at the Page, of course. Coincidentally, two blocks from my house. I am sneaky. -

What a great find. I was in the neighborhood looking for a liquor store, but what I found instead was some great vintage stuff.
I'm a bit of a weirdo in that I like older things that were made in the U.S.A., back when we were riding high on hog as a manufacturing economy. Kicking ass and taking names!
Anyway, I walked by this shop and saw the sign that said, "Antique and Vintage" and had to stop in.
Well, I also spied a little lighted snowman, you know, one of those well-made, old-style lawn or window ornaments, in the window.
I knew that snowman was going to be mine.
I didn't have a lot of time to look around, but inside it was a mix of mostly vintage items.
I eat this shit up.
Remember, once this stuff is gone, it is gone forever, so if you can find vintage things you like, buy them.
After twenty minutes in the store, I happily left with my snowman, some vintage ornaments, and two wonderful lighted "Noel" candles (more of the vintage window/lawn lights).
The bill was $86, but, you know, it's my birthday.
Maybe that is expensive, maybe not.
I will be back to this store soon, to spend at least an hour looking around. -

This is my favorite store in the city!
I love a good treasure hunt, and this place is full of divine finds!!
If i ever get married I want to register here! I seriously love everything in this store.
In terms of furniture (while it's a bit out of my reach right now) the selection is excellent. If you are looking for retro, 70's danish wooden pieces they always have something beautiful here.
Also they have great lighting pieces.
But in terms of what i've found over the years.. let's see:
1) Vintage Louie Vuitton Riding Jacket... $50, it's real and in great condition.
2) Large Lichtenstein Poster, which I adore, it's the coolest thing in my apartment right now $60.
3) Brand new, never used Fondue Set, still in the box from the 70s a wedding gift that was just never used I'm sure. $40
4) Lots of prints, vinyl & cards. I love looking through the old post cards and prints. I always find a hidden gem.
5) BELTS! I have found some amazing old belts here. Whenever I wear them I get compliments. They have a decent amount of vintage clothing shoes and accessories.
6) Jewelry! Tons and Tons of Jewels. I've gotten several pieces, and there is always so much to look at. Also i've gotten some great pairs of sunglasses too!
The thing I love so much about this store is that there truly is something for everyone. While some things are pricey, it's usually for a reason, and these people are not trying to rip you off. They are professional collectors and these pieces are their heart soul and in some case livelihood. Unlike stores such as "Past Perfect" down in the Marina, this place will not try to bleed you dry with every purchase, and you won't leave feeling downhearted and broke.
The Other shop is remarkable and fair, and that's why I love it, so shop here instead of getting ripped off at most of the other vintage antique shops in city.
But don't get carried away! Save some stuff for me! :) -

Dudes, this place is peeeeeeemp. Hurrah! I like to take a moment to stop in here every time I pass by because they get new shit often. In fact, they have a sale pretty much every single month to clear out the old old stuff for the new old stuff. I once scored not only a sweet paint-by-numbers painting of german shepherds in its original frame (and sers like 16" x 18" or something), but an antique gold locket in pristine condition... both for circa $30 total! Purchases like these won't break the bank, folks.
However! There are often pieces of furniture on sale here for upwards of $300 that you could've sworn you saw at Goodwill for $15. Now, I certainly understand how much time and effort these antique-hunters put into tracking down awesome, hard to find goods, so I won't even ding 'em for it. The awesome sales, rare finds, and varied things to look at completely make up for it.
I rarely take the time to dig through the clothes because I just don't feel like it most of the time... but I've definitely browsed and come across designer labels for low prices, and in varied sizes to boot. Everything's sort of That Girlesque in style, but honestly, what else do you really need, folks?
I'm generally not really into antique stores because they smell bad and charge much much much too much, but this one seems to avoid both these faults, for the most part. Come here to window shop, at the very least.Listed in: Divisadero Street Scenesters

If you think about touching the Danish credenza I have a crush on, I will enroll in karate classes and pay off the staff to find your address and kick your ass.
I suppose I could afford the things I want from The Other Shop if I started saving my money. But that's crazy.
The only thing wrong with this shop is that they just do not give me things.Listed in: Home, Homie, Thriftin' and Siftin'

I was in the market for S&P shakers, a must have for every new apt right? I found these fabulous rustic looking wooden shakers. They are 4in tall cylinders with S and P dotted on the tops, perf.! I wasn't even looking but I found more! A retro set of canisters that I intend on using for sugar and flour (I don't bake or cook, but whatev). The containers are yellow and orange with large flowers on them. I was continually eying a red bulking lamp, but decided I should save something for my next visit.
I was about to check out when I saw it.............what? There are vintage clothes, shoes and bags here! No way! Yes, and they are in such great condition I couldn't help but scoop up a black vintage purse for myself.
Multiple vendors sell their items in this spot so you are truly getting a great variety of artwork, furniture, glassware, jewelery, and anything else you can imagine. If you love antiques you will find this place wonderful and charming, which it is! -

Am I the only person who finds this place to be overpriced & overrated? Hell, I'm not even that overSTIMULATED when I'm in there. A place like this should make you feel like a kid in a candy store, but nearly everything they sell seems a bit useless to me.
Sure, if you're into extremely overpriced vintage 70s furniture, go for it.
I'd rather try my luck in a thrift store.Listed in: As Divisadero Turns

Review from Angela N.
Of all the things I wanted to buy in this store, I managed to justify one purchase. I had a wedding to attend in the somewhat near future and needed a new frock. Low and behold, I stumbled upon the most perfect dress one Sunday afternoon, wandering around to work off some of the brunch.
There's a small selection of vintage clothing in perfect/near perfect condition. I spotted a beautiful custom 1960s Hawaiian hibiscus knee-length dress with the most fabulous pleated train. It was stunning (as confirmed by compliments left and right each time I wear it). As soon as I put it on, my friends commented that the dress looked as though it was made for me. I had to have it. The price was a bit high but after some negotiation and a little time spent waiting for the shop clerk (possibly owner) to call the former owner to check to see if my desired price was acceptable. Success! I spent the rest of the day running around with my head in the cloud, dreaming of the day I could debut my new dress.
I'll absolutely be back next time I need a new dress, a unique gift, or new home furnishings/accessories. -

I love this little place, albeit a little pricey. Thats just the price you have to pay for some vintage pieces. Where else are you going to find a 35 year old rotary orange phone?
Believe it or not, there are some hidden gems in there. I bought a beautiful classic 70's oil painting for 40 dollars and let me tell you, it really ties the room together.
Even if your not buying anything you just want to get some ideas, take stroll through my favorite neighborhood and stop in. Often times I see things that I can recreate at home. Very inspirational! -

I am always 100% pleased with the selection, the prices and customer service. Many vintage items in very nice condition.
I go in here pretty often looking for gifts, and knick knacks for my salon, and photo shoot eye candy.
More good news: They have all the vinyl from across the way housed under the same roof now. This is good for me because it occupies the hubby, while I browse to my hearts content :) -

First off, I LOVE THIS PLACE! It's one of the few places left in SF were you can find quality collectables, Danish modern, and vintage clothing/jewelry for reasonable prices. I picked up some really cool necklaces and rings for Christmas and walked away with cool, thoughtful gifts for 4 people for under $100. Amazing...
I think it's a worker-owned collective so there are many dealers bringing in various treasures each week. Their stock is always changing and the store is busy. I learned the hard way to buy something right away if I like it. I once saw a Danish dresser there for a good price and I wanted to "think about it". I came back the next day to get it and someone else had bought it an hour earlier.. I was ready to start crying.
Go there... if even just to look.. the merchandise is entertaining! -

If you are looking to accessorize your mid-century modern decor and don't want to look like you ordered your living room lock-stock-and-barrel from Herman Miller or Design Within Reach (which is out of my reach), stop in at the Other Shop for a touch of uncommon style.
This is one of very few places I can think of where you can still buy a cool vintage ashtray. Do they even make those anymore?
My man bought a set of bar glasses with a graph of the stock market from 1976-1986 and notable world events circling the glass (i.e.: Oil Hits $23.50 a barrel - 1979). It is so much fun to contemplate Patty Hearst's arrest or Carter's Energy report (the put-on-a-sweater speech) over bourbon and ice.Listed in: My Neighborhood, Born to Shop

The last time I visited the Other Shop I had a much better time looking at the selections.
Sometimes the pickings are slim, but that just may be because I arrived too late. On my last visit I was very excited to see an Eames molded plywood screen, a classic looking Calder mobile and a Dorothee Becker Utensilo! Now that just puts me in a good mood. -

The best. I am coveting so many things from there at the moment, I can't even list them all. Space is open and shoppable - prices are fair.

Since moving to the neighborhood, I've been into this place several times. It bums me out that no one greets me when I walk in the door as most friendly, local store owners like to do. It's definitely up my alley in terms of mid-century style, but not so up my alley in terms of price. I have found much cheaper - and impeccable - stuff on craigslist. And they apparently won't negotiate on the price of anything below $200. I found a rug that would have been great in my place but it's marked $75 and FROM IKEA. I'll pass. I realize rugs are pricey but it's still Ikea (and this is the second overpriced Ikea item someone is posting about - pretty sure the ice cube lamp is still there too).
I'll probably be back in again, to browse around and leave empty-handed. -
Review from Jean K.
This place has so much cute stuff! Lots of vintage houseware and odds and ends. Some pieces of furniture. All very reasonable priced compared to the places on Valencia. I only wish hubby would let me go crazy and buy all those glasses and dishes (but then we would probably need an extra kitchen for everything).
I'm keeping an eye out for a lounge chair. I'm sure the perfect one will end up here waiting for me someday.
No 5 stars because I've yet to buy anything after all this browsing. -

it is so much fun to come through here whenever i am near by. each time the items have changed and new treasures await. I just bought the perfect rocking chair after testing out every rocker that passes me by (as i regular used furniture stores) for quite some time now. what has continuously stood out there are the lamps and the chairs along with some beautiful tables. the quality and selection they get is great.

I stumbled upon The Other Shop by chance and thought it deserved a look around. Typical antique shop, but perhaps a bit smaller than most. The treasures I found were chemistry beakers and glass jars. These are the same glass jars you find at most antique shops, but still I felt compelled to own the long skinny one with the cork top. And for only $10 bucks how could I refuse.
I also enjoyed this shop because there were about 4 little monsters running loose in the store touching and playing with everything despite the "THIS STORE IS NOT CHILD PROOF. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN" sign. Truly priceless. -

Used to buy furniture here like 7 years ago. It was a fun and funky shop then. Went in today....
Furniture - bad and expensive. It isn't the classic midcentury stuff, it's crap like Sports Illustrated shoe phones. And the records. OMG. I looked at the prices, and you can tell why the record shop that used to have their own location across the street had to shut down and move in here. They had ESG's self titled record - original label, but in like VG condition. They wanted $40!! WTF? Are you high?
I just bought that record in NM condition for like $15 two weeks ago. Same label and everything. When I was like, the record pricing is a bit high, I got a dirty look and the person who asked if I needed help quickly scurried away.
Oh well, another one bites the dust. Other Shop? More like find another shop. -

Ah, the longing of youth. Well, sort of my youth...more like my parents 20's to be honest. Of course, I was in my single digits then, so I can sometimes remember the mushroom colored and shaped canisters, the orange shag carpet, stainless steel light fixtures, and colored tupperware.
Makes me wonder why I didn't just save my entire parents house circa 1972, put it in a storage unit, and open a store in San Francisco in 2002. Hhmmm...30 years of storage space x rent = oh my mind is digressing.
I bought the coolest word game from the 60's that had never been opened for my sister for Christmas, so she could fondly remember our family game nights when my Mom drank to much Chardonnay and tried to spell.
Minus one star for odd hours and some high prices, but 4 stars for simply reminding me of youth. -

Cute! Packed with goodies--from an 8-track player in the shape of an astronaut's helmet, olive green glass stuff from the 60s, a really cute shepard's crook (? I don't know why, but I really want it!), retro furniture, lamps and trinkets of all kinds. There's a decent selection of LPs, and a vintage clothes corner in the back.
We're moving tomorrow, so I'm excited about the prospect of coming back to buy myself little items in manner of housewarming. -

I really like this place.
I purchased a coffee table here on a whim, and the price was decent as I scored it during a sale.
HOWEVER, the quality of the table? Notso great. It's probably a combination of me not regluing the joints when one popped out and putting my 30 lb tv on top of this fine piece. I just hope an earthquake doesn't kill it....
Most of the small items are comparable to other antique stores - everyone nowadays has pyrex and danish glass - but there are still a few stand outs!
I was rather impressed with several items in particular... The Other Shop has a great selection of lighting - chandeliers and sconces, etc, that I haven't really seen at any mid century boutiques before
There was also an INCREDIBLE China cabinet in really fine condition marked at a modest $250.
Staff is friendly and fitting for the shop. Also very flexible when you need to hold something until you can pick it up!! -

I'm probably not at the age quite yet where I should be antique shopping. But what can I say, Im an old soul with classic taste. I made it a point to dedicate a whole day for vintage/antique shopping in hopes that I would find incredible unique pieces and/or furniture. The Other Shop was first on the list and boy do they have old classics - an eclectic mixture of random things from the 20s all the way to the 60s. Want some old jazz records? The got em. Black & white photos of Marilyn? They got em. Jewelry Marie Antoinette once wore? They got em. (ok she might not have worn them but I bet she would have) Dining room set from the 60s? The got it. Some of the pieces will have you shelling out more than a pretty penny but most were reasonably priced. Old paintings adorning the walls, racks of clothes you just dont see anymore and lamps of all sizes and styles hanging from the ceiling. You're sure to leave with something.
Sad that I was about to leave empty handed, I passed the display window and from the corner of my eye noticed a Victorian style ottoman. It was exactly a piece I had been looking for. I snatched it up and walked out with it for $35! What a steal! Im pretty sure this shop gets in more pieces every week so i'll definitely be popping in again. -

I became a HUGE fan of this store the moment I first walked in its doors (which was many years ago and my fondness has not been weaned yet). The prices are good with the selection diverse. If you like mid-century design at affordable prices then this is definitely the place (other than the San Francisco Antique & Design Mall) to check out.

Love this store. A bit pricey, but rarely do I walk into a shop and immediately think - "I want everything!" And I do. I came out the other day with the perfect turquoise vintage office chair and returned just a few days later to wander aimlessly, enjoying every second of it. Really gorgeous, thoughtful collection. I'm so glad this spot is in my neighborhood.

I've walked by this place so many times, and finally went inside to browse this weekend. They've done a great job finding a happy medium between an interesting and plentiful mix of pieces and just plain clutter. I really enjoyed my time wandering around, and was pleasantly surprised by the prices (not cheap, but not exorbitant either). Walked out with some great prints ($8 each!!) Lovely man behind the counter, too.

The Other Shop is another one that I neglected. I was pleasantly shocked that it was affordable. If there's one thing that SF is good at, it's all the shops with vintage pieces maked up 700%. Fortunately, this is the "other shop". I chose a leather western bracelet for $9. The shop has a good selection of costume jewelery, funky dishware, some terrible artwork, and lots of cutesy junk. Oh, and the plastic desk stapelers adorned with your astrological sign took my breath away...

This is a gem of a shop! I live close by and always admired it after hours and I kept saying to myself I've gotta come here. Finally a week before Xmas desperate for gifts, I went bezerek here! So many good things and the prices are just right. I got some great atomic glasses, a mushroom trivet from Sears and a clown switchplate. There are so many little nooks in the store to discover treasures so you have to look at every single thing. And they have new things every week-damn now I'm in trouble!
