Not only does the Sandwich Shoppe make the best sandwich I have ever tasted. The service is excellent. The owner is always there to check me out and always asks me how the sandwich was. Today he began telling me where all of his food comes from (ultra high quality) and how he makes everything from scratch (with the exception of the cold cut turkey). It is the mark of a great owner to be involved in every process of your business and to know where all of your supplies come from. He also makes a large effort to forge a customer-producer relationship, something VERY rare in Manhattan.
My favorite sandwich is Rudy's Turkey. The turkey is made fresh by the shop and tastes better than a Thanksgiving turkey. To compliment this amazing meat, they add herbal mayo- a recipe they have been using for almost 30 years. It is by far the best condiment that has ever graced my sandwich bun. Their Cuban sandwich is also out of this world amazing. I haven't got to try all of the sandwiches yet, but I have only heard great things about each sandwich.
They have delicious desserts- I cannot wait to try their brownie next week.
If you want a sandwich, DO NOT HESITATE, it does not get better than the Sandwich Shoppe!

Let me say first that I am giving two stars for service. The food is actually Great. There is one guy doing all the work and the lady who runs it just collects money, as she tells me. The one guy can't get through a line of one person in front of you well at all.. so make sure you go when there is no one there if you plan to go..

Otherwise, great simple and healthy meals

I've been to this neighborhood spot before for the ice-cold lemonade, but this weekend ventured in for a snack.

The chalkboard lists a variety of sandwich creations or you can create your own from the vegetables, meats, cheeses, and spreads available. I noticed a huge loaf of black bread screaming my name, so ordered the Rudy's Roasted Turkey -- freshly roasted there, and very tasty, with their herb mayo, also made from scratch on the premises. It's rare to find a good place that serves fresh turkey as opposed to anything Boar's Head, so I appreciate the lengths they go to live up to their moniker. Not skimpy on the meat, the sandwich was even reasonably priced.

    And they're on Seamless!

Spent my afternoon wandering the West Village (and got lost, of course) and found myself here.  I had a turkey, apple, and cheddar sandwich, which I got on foccacia with herbal mayo.  Had their homemade lemonade on the side.  All of this came to a total of $10-something, which was probably the only downside, although the sandwich was huge and I was full by the end!

Service was great, and they sliced the apple right in front of me!  I normally hate mayo and the herbal mayo was delicious.  It was busy inside (2pm on a Monday), but I was able to grab a table.  An older lady (who must be a regular?) stated that it was her birthday, so the staff and everyone in the restaurant joined in to sing her happy birthday...so that was cute.

The West Village is a bit of a hike from the UES, but I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

I had walked by the store last week and noticed there were a lot of patrons, so I made a mental note to try them out. Last night I called them to order, and they were closing up for the night, and had no delivery guy left. The gentleman who answered the phone, informed me of that, and then told me he would still make me the sandwich and drop it off by car on his way home. Never have I had someone go out of their way to be that accommodating. The sandwich was great, but the gesture won them a client in me for as long as they are in business. It was so nice to be reminded that there are some truly courteous and helpful people in the world. That plus a very delicious sandwich made a great combination.

The pending sign on their store front should be updated as of May 6, 2011 with a big "C" sign according to the NYC DOH website.

This is bratty of me to say, but I don't like to eat at C-rated establishments. They can keep the $10 I paid for 2 BuyWithMe coupons. A stomach ache isn't worth it.

    7/13/2010 1 Check-in Here

This was the first official stop on the Craige Moore Eat & Workout Tour of NYC, although I have been walking to restaurants all over NYC for 13 years now. Wow...

Okay, I'm over it now. I've been out of college for 13 years. I'm not young. Deep... breaths....

The first sandwich on the menu board is the roast turkey and I I think I read that's their specialty. I do love a good REAL turkey sandwich, so I went for that one.

    1. The French bread it comes on is perfectly chewy and not at all crusty and mouth-hurting.

    2. The herby mayo is, as described in every other review, excellent.

    3. This is a big one for me: the sandwich is lovingly prepared. The guy making it did not slap everything in the center of the bread and call it good, causing me to wind up with all the tomato on one side and all the cheese on the other. No, he made it as carefully as I would have made it at home.

    4. He was so attentive, in fact, that I think if I went after the lunch rush again, I could ask him to cut off the crunchy part of the lettuce and he would absolutely oblige me happily.

    5. There is free wifi and oddly, a BYO policy. I guess maybe the vibe at night is different (they're open til 9), but at 2pm, I could not really imagine showing up with a bottle of wine to drink with my sandwich.

    6. They also sell really good looking brownies. Ooh! I nearly forgot. I have a brownie in my purse. Hold on, let me taste it...Oh yes. That's a good brownie.

    7. I saw him make the veggie sandwich and it actually looked really good. I'm a fan of veggie sandwiches, but am wary of them since they tend to be crap, but I'd definitely go back and get that. And a brownie.

I came here after watching a movie at IFC with my voucher from buywithme. I presented it to the mid 30-40 lady at the cashier and the first thing she said was "NO." I was def. confused and disgusted at the service already. I ordered my sandwich with the guy, since I had to use the $10 voucher in one visit, I ordered the Sautéed Steak Sandwich, cost $9.25 and with tax it all came up to $10.02.

I took it to go and without a table to eat on, I used my lap. I opened it up, ripped it in half and took my first bite. OMG, it was def delicious, the meat was tender and packed inside the bread. The bread itself was the star, I kid you not when I say best best baguette (i think it's a baguette)  EVER. I do not know what it is but the bread itself had a crispy crunch and unlike other sandwich bread, I like how the inside of the bread is just thin enough to soak up the juices from the steak.

It was a messy lunch, the sandwich was dipped in gravy almost, every bite I had juices flowing down the side of my fingers. I was only given 2 napkins and it was not enough.

Beside the steak, the fresh tomato, lettuce,  cheese, gravy dipped, it also had dijon mustard. I'm never a fan of dijon mustard but it def. complimented the bite...not too much but just enough that it blended well with the gravy. To me it was a bit too salty but the bread did help balance out some of the saltiness.

Overall, I give the food/ sandwich 4 stars. A tat too salty and  portion wise..it's an inch or so smaller than the regular heros you get at deli stores.
the services 3 stars- got my sandwich in less than 5 mins but the lady, she needs an attitude change
the price 2 star --- for a sandwich, you are pretty pricey

I still didn't understand why she said "NO" to me.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but they make a darn good sandwich.  No, a DAMN good sandwich (yeah, I said it).

I was in a hurry when I came in, so instead of really studying the menu, I asked which sandwich was the best. I was told #1 or #2 (#1 is roast turkey, #2 is deli turkey). #1 is nothing short of turk-maz-ing. It's roast turkey (*real* roast turkey) on an chewy, warm, oh-my-goodness-did-this-looks-like-nothing-place-j ust-serve-me-such-a-delicious-piece-of-toasted-bre ad? baguette. The turkey was warmed, too, which just added to the scrumptiouness of the sandwich. I had mine with spicy mustard, cucumber, and tomato. Satisfying, and worth every penny.

Smallish breakfast menu (which might be good before a workout sometime since my gym is close by), and definitely worth a return trip.

The Good: The Sandwiches here are THE BOMB. They have an herbal mayo that is astonishing - and I don't even like mayo. The turkey sandwiches are assembled from freshly carved roasted turkeys in whatever dark/white combo you want. Once I had that sandwich, there was no need to ever try another. The brownies are perfect - chewy, moist and deeply chocolate.

The Sad:  The brothers that ran OSS years ago were HOT, smart-mouthed, and flirtatious to men and women alike. It was worth going for the ego boost and laughs alone. Their sister, who took over, is sweet and organized, but she lacks the salacious bite that her brothers had. This change is best illustrated through their Lemonade. Before, a cup meant pulpy, tart squeezed lemons with just the right amount of sugar and water. Now, it tastes like, well, Countrytime.

The Bottom Line: The loss of eye candy is a bummer, but the Sandwiches can't be beat.

It would be difficult for me to be more impressed with the Italian sandwich I had today at the original sandwich shoppe. Everything was perfect; fresh delicious ham, salami and provolone, crisp vegetables, a dynamic homemade vinaigrette, and some perfectly toasted French bread to hold it all together

Past that however, it is quite obvious that the owner/manager really cares about your sandwich, as he watched over everything being made and corrected the workers on a (very minor) mistake or two. Needless to say, in addition to being made from awesome ingredients the sandwich arrived extremely well put together, an attribute which should not be taken for granted.

This was easily the best sandwich I have had in New York.

I recently worked with a dermatology resident who only had to visit my hospital in the West Village once a week. Every single time he came by, however, he couldn't stop talking about the roast turkey sandwich at the Original Sandwich Shoppe that he was going to eat as soon as his morning shift was done. It was like his version of Proust's madeleines in the making.

Such unbridled enthusiasm about a foodstuff never fails to arouse my attention, so one day I decided to check it out for myself. I ordered the roast turkey, and the second question (after the first one, "What bread?", to which I answered ciabatta, toasted, please) was "White or dark meat?" That is *always* a good question to hear as far as I'm concerned. I chose dark. I also opted for lettuce, tomato, and some pesto mayonnaise.

The sandwich was solid. The turkey meat was moist and of clearly higher quality than you're going to get at your local Subway; it was, however, undersalted, a flaw only partially compensated for by the salt content of the ciabatta. The pesto mayo, despite its radioactive greenness, was a nice accent mark.

With quick, no-nonsense service and a variety of other choices on the menu worth a second look, it's a good weapon to have in my work neighborhood lunch armamentarium. Still, I'll probably usually opt for more adventurous fare in the area if I'm going to drop north of $10 for a sandwich and drink.

Probability of return within a year: 60%

I guess the turkey is the way to go here cause i was overly impressed with my hero.  I'm not a fan of turkey so I went with the italian.  The bread they use is great, and the meat was pretty good too.  I really enjoyed the dressing they used.  The problem is with the price, definitely wasn't worth almost $10.  If the sandwich was bigger I think the price would be justified, but it's just a normal sized sandwich. They could use a better selection of chips as well.

This place has some of NY's greatest sandwiches.  I practically live above it, so each day I get to smell the freshly-roasting turkeys as I walk to the gym.  Luckily, my self-control keeps me headed for my workout...

Great specials every day, but it never hurts to simply ask the owner (a big, burly, bald-headed man)  to make you something delicious.  The turkey (and anything with the herbal mayo) is delicious, and they have great breads to choose from.

I swear, they must've stuffed my 'wich with a WHOLE pack of Ham 'cuz there was SO MUCH HAM, it was falling outta my 'wich!

They're friendly, fast and efficient. The 'wiches are a bit on the pricey side but it's worth it!

    A sandwich is a sandwich.

A great sandwich is easily achieved and commonly overlooked. Fresh ingredients are expected: bread, meat, cheese, vegetables, w/ appropriate condiment. Sometimes, people hold some sandwiches in higher echelons only because of special or unique ingredients. However, there are times when a good ol' ham and cheddar with mayo is the hands down best sandwich out there. I do truly believe that a great sandwich only gets the recognition it deserves in the wake of a bad sandwich encounter, which is hard to come by in these days of sanitary regulations and expiration dates.

Now that I'm done sandwich philosophizing, I got the Black Ham & Brie on a baguette and it was as expected from a place specializing in sandwiches, good.

    A sandwich is a sandwich.

Great selection + high quality = a sandwich lover's dream.

Close to 10 different kinds of bread, several different vegetables and spreads, and a good meat selection. I got the Virginia Ham and Swiss on Focaccia, and it was great. They toasted only the bread, which turned out to be great because the sandwich was warm and I could really taste the different flavors. I got the Chipotle Mayo on one side and the Whole Grain Mustard on the other; the mustard was a little overpowering at first, but over the course of the meal, it became just a piece of the complex puzzle that is a sandwich from OSS. Highly recommended.

The sandwiches are really quite good. I have only had their signature turkey sandwich, which is really very good with fresh roasted turkey. The bread used for the sandwiches also seems to be of a good quality.  The service tends to be quite brusk. The sides with the sandwiches are nothing to write home about either. Mainly being bags of chips.

Blah.  $10 for a takeout turkey tossed salad that was totally dry.  I mistakenly thought that since they were tossing the salad fresh for my order, there would be some sort of dressing in it, but it was totally dry, and they neither offered or put any dressing in the bag for me to put on myself.  Dry lettuce with a few add ins for $10 stinks.
