after doing a good 5 mile run with jackie, we decided to blow our healthy exercise on OPH.  i'd say it was worth it.
she got pigs in a blanket. it looked gross but she loved it.
i got a veggie omelet that could probably feed all the weasleys (include errol and pig). it was delicious. it came with pancakes. that made me happy. i didn't need to get anything for the rest of the day. cheap karen LOVES when that happens.
but the service is slow (a baby dripped diarrhea a little in the front of the place and we came and went without someone cleaning it up. yeh nast)

but actually, i'm kind of craving pancakes right now.....

Not much improvement. I do like the warm syrup.

Three cheers to the service, bumps you up another star!!!

I had a perplexing experience last time. I ordered sourdough flapjacks. They punched more San Francisco yeast into those things than a sourdough bakery.

I felt like I was eating yogurt. Fine experience. Will never do again.

Solid option for satisfying a high-carb breakfast craving.  Their pancake choices are broad, with the standard breakfast cafe options as well (eggs, toast, bacon, links, you know what I mean).  The Dutch Baby is an innovative, but very filling option.  The coffee here is quite good!

Long lines on weekends!  Show up early or be prepared to wait.  Alternatively, try one of the many other sit-down breakfast options in the area - Cully's, Beach Grass Cafe, Le Peep, Delight of France (Escondido).

After reading the reviews, I was excited to go here for breakfast. To say I was disappointed is a gross understatement.

My husband ordered the chicken crepes. From the green-grey sauce to the mushrooms, everything was canned. Even the chicken. Who the heck uses canned chicken?? Nothing was fresh.

I ordered poached eggs and blueberry pancakes. The eggs were swimming in lukewarm water and the blueberries were canned. I guess I had expected them to be fresh. The pancakes themselves were a bit rubbery and disintegrated with the syrup.

The coffee was bitter brown water.

The only redeeming thing was the bacon. Thick cut and smokey-sweet. That - and the service was great. Our server was extremely nice and the wait was not that long considering the restaurant was full.

We did see their signature baked apple pancake go by our table, and the smell was heavenly, but it was insanely huge - it's a serving fit for a table of four or six.

We will not be returning.

Don't let the location fool you, this place is actually very delicious. My personal favorites are the sourdough pancakes or the biscuits and gravy. The wait can get up there depending on when you go, but if you don't mind waiting, then this place will be serve you well once you are seated. It's a nice place to go to when you are recovering in the morning, as opposed to say Denny's or some other cheap place nearby. I say at least give it a shot. It is a chain, but it will surprise you.

Ok... so, just an update... went again today with some friends and tried the German Pancake. It's the pancake big enough to feed a high school football team and still have some left over. They bring it out on a forklift and you have to sit in the parking lot to eat it since it's too big to fit on a regular table.

OK.. well, it's not quite that big, but you get the idea.

It was delish! My wife and I both agreed that it was MUCH better than both the blueberry pancakes and sourdough pancakes we got last time. The pancake was light and fluffy with zesty lemons served on the side, along with powdered sugar, whipped butter and maple syrup.

Our friends each got an omelet.. each was pretty big as well! They enjoyed them.. they could have been lying, but their empty plates led me to think they were telling the truth.

Once again, this place is a solid choice for yummy breakfast in the Poway area.

I'm sold on this place. Everything here was pretty good. I had an omellette  with peppers and ham along with a side of pancakes. I highly recommend the potato pancakes. It's like hash browns but better. The service is quick and friendly. There are many choices on the menu and something for everyone. I highly recommend this place for the morning hangover cure.

When I was a little kid my family always went to the Original Pancake House in Oregon and we always got the huge, fabulous apple pancakes!  I pulled up and observed a crowd waiting outside the doors: a sure sign of a good spot!  I got a big, thick Sunday paper and we settled in for the wait.  It wasn't too bad.
Once we were seated the hostess got our drinks right away.  The waitress followed shortly after and took our order.  Our food was out in less then 10 minutes despite the packed restaurant!  The scrambled eggs were really good.  The apple pancake was out of this world and just as I'd remembered!   The hostess never let the coffee or water reach halfway point.  Great brunch!

An all breakfast menu with extremely large portions.  Especially their omlettes!  Fat rotund omlettes and overtopped crepes.  Delicious!  This place is open for breakfast and closes at 3pm.  Weekdays arent so crowded but beware of the crowd on the weekends, it gets pretty packed.  I'm not much of a pancake person but their pancakes were soft, moist and fluffy.  They weren't heavy leaving you feeling like your heart is about to clog, they were very light.

The only sides I'd probably order are the corn beef hash and the American Fried potatos.  Portions are so huge you'll definitely leave feeling full and satisfied.

Yowza... the wait alone at this place is a reason to go somewhere else.  I've never been there and walked right in.  The wait is always a minimum of 30 minutes and I'm not sure why... the food is okay, but not outstanding and the service usually leaves something to be desired.  I also find it to be pricey for breakfast.  They have a few things on the menu that others don't (the dutch baby, pigs in a blanket and sourdough pancakes) but they aren't worth the fighting crowds and loud atmosphere for me.

Amazing for a rainy day.  I've never heard of this place before until today. It was after Faith in Action with my church and my small group decided to go out for brunch. Best idea ever. The wait was like 25-30 minutes but totally worth it.
Everyone in my group got chocolate chip pancakes and LOVED them, I got Belgian Waffle with fresh strawberries and it was AMAZING and way filling. The place was really crowded and busy, but it didn't take long to get the order to the table.

I was a little wary when I saw the other reviews, but I think I had a good meal. If I were to use only one word to describe it, "filling" would be it.

(Here are some more words though).
I got the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, which comes with 3 pancakes (potato ro regular) and it was a giant entree! The eggs were perfectly poached (and made me wish I'd asked for toast. The hollandaise was a little runny-looking, but properly super-rich. The crab cakes had good flavor, but were kinda soggy. The pancakes were A-OK. My dining partner enjoyed the corned beef hash, and said it was good. The potato pancakes were, to my surprise, a bit on the sweet side, but very crispy.

While choosing our entrees, we'd thought about ordering a Dutch Baby as dessert, but in the end were way too full. I saw someone else's order of it, though, and it looked great!

This used to be my favorite place for breakfast.  It has gone down hill FAST!!

My favorite dish used to be the bacon and cheese omelette, but lately its just disgusting.  A few weeks ago I ordered it and the bacon was practically RAW and chewy .. gross.. so we went today for another chance because I thought it just could have been a bad day.. and I was sure to order the bacon EXTRA CRISPY!

After waiting a lot longer than the rest of my family for my omelette, it came out chewy again!!

I do enjoy their apple pancake and thats the only reason I would give this ONE STAR..

They are expensive for breakfast and obviously their quality is lacking lately .. I have no idea why...

I have been to many of these establishments and this one by far has to be the tiniest.  (-1 star)...however they make up for it in their staff's willingness to be helpful and the super quick manner in which they get your food out to you.

I love the fresh strawberry crepes this time of year.  It has to be when they are in season and you have to hit it just right...or you get the syrupy soggy strawberries which are never good IMHO...but today they were spot on.

Heaven on the plate and in my tummy...I order the two crepes and a side of bacon...which is the most delicious combination!!

I got their today at around 2:15...they close at three...and I must say this is THE BEST TIME to go...NO line....and PLENTY of seating and even at 2:45 they were still sitting people...

Thank you for a wonderful late late late breakfast and no to late lunch/early dinner...I am still stuffed!

The bathroom is WAY TOO CLOSE to the kitchen (-1 star) but is THE MOST kid-friendly I have ever seen.  I have a 4-yr old, recently potty trained and they had the potty seat....AND the booster at the sink for him to wash his hands....that to me...is just the neatest and most thoughtful detail.  Those of you with kids out there....know that you can't visit any place without visiting the restroom AT LEAST once...am I right?!

This is close to breakfast food porn as it gets for me.  Admist the hustle and bustle nestled away on the "country roads of Poway" is The Original Pancake House.  Sure you have to wait for some 15-20 minutes but it's not as bad as it seems as long as you're with good company I always say.

Ok...today...I had me the Crab Cakes Benedict.  Basically it's your basic Eggs Benedict swap out the English Muffin with Crab Cakes instead.  The Crab Cakes give it a little umpph if you know what I mean. The Crab Cakes tasted fresh and flaky and was the perfect accompaniement with the hollandaise / sour cream that they put on top of it.

The sausage links..but hands down their bacon is awesome.  It's nice and thick/crunchy.  They obviously have a wide variety of pancakes from German Pancakes to Chocolate Chip Pancakes...to various fruit toppings...you name it.

Weekends especially Sundays can be pretty packed here.  Just be forewarned about the wait...

I've eaten here a couple times, mostly when I'm driving down Camino Del Norte and have a craving for breakfast.

I'd much prefer Cully's but OPH is okay.  Better than Denny's if you are really interested in pancakes, although a bit more expensive than Denny's too.

Okay we went back because it was 2pm on a Saturday and we needed to eat before battling the soccer moms at Target. It actually wasn't as bad, I was surprisingly impressed. Our server was very pleasant and very quick in refilling the coffee. Also it was obvious that they were gearing up to close for the day yet we were never rushed or felt hurried in anyway. And my Swedish pancakes were pretty darn good! Wow...who knew the Pancake House could make me eat my words....

Loooooove in the club...!

Woke up early on a Saturday morning to have breakfast before heading out to a wedding... arrived 9 minutes before 7am and already there was a line of people waiting to get in! They looked mostly like regulars, and we noticed more families coming in around 8am.

Babe had the corned beef, scrambled eggs and potato pancakes. All were awesome, and just perfectly seasoned. Usually when we get corned beef it comes out all salty and oily.... but theirs was perfect. Everything was in good proportions.

I had the blueberry belgian waffle, and it was so light and crispy... loved the whipped butter and applesauce condiments on the side. Washed everything down with a cold apple juice and I was set till lunch.

Would definitely come back if I'm in town and visiting.... most likely in the early early morning because the service was fast, and it just felt great to leave satisfied and not weighted down with a heavy, oily breakfast.

Ok i'm changing my review because I went here for a few friends from out of town who told me about the apple pancakes so I went along to try it & i LOVED it!! Then i came back again and tried the baby dutch & that was delicious too!! i think the mistake i made the 1st few times was having the potato pancakes, which isnt really a breakfast pancake, then the omlette, then the hash browns. The pancakes are BOMB & i will come back & try some more. The bacon is so thick & yummy too. so I take back my old review. =)

This is my favorite North County breakfast spot.  Their Eggs Benedict (with 3 potato pancakes on the side!) is perfection.

when we wanna eat out for breakfast somewhere close to home...this is where we go. usually there is a wait, but hey you gotta expect that on saturday or sunday morning. I always order a the side of deluxe homestyle potatoes (i think thats what they are called) and 2 sunnyside up eggs but whoa that thang is almost a meal in itself. It reminds me of the potatoes at konos...another fav breakfast spot. Its slightly crispy potatoes, onions, bell peppers, ham and then loaded with melted cheese ....yummmmm! The service is fast and friendly...never have to ask for a refill. The pancakes are a little thin but still light and fluffy and quite tasty. I love that they have a huge variety of pancakes...so many options, i love it. I had my first potato pancake in about 15 years here....it was served with apple sauce and sour cream.....the sweet, the salty....sooo good!

the one complaint i do have about this place is the tables are so dang close to each other....its almost as if you are sharing a table with strangers because you can pretty much hear everything the table next to you is talking about....
so request a booth!

i will be back though...and next time i'll be trying one of those funny looking dutch baby pancakes...those things are huge!

We wanted breakfast for lunch and chose Original Pancake House. It wasn't crowded, being a weekday lunch. And that's a good thing, as I'm not sure I liked it well enough to return on a weekend.

I had the corned beef hash and eggs; it comes with potato pancakes. The corned beef had a little too much onion going on, but the eggs were nicely scrambled: fluffy and golden. The potato pancakes were slightly disappointing. They were incredibly flat. While I like thin pancakes, I prefer a little more oomph to a potato pancake. Still, they were crispy on the edges, which I love.

One person got the pecan pancakes and was sad that the pecans were sprinkled across the top of the pancakes rather than cooked into them. He also found the pancakes oddly salty. Two glasses of water salty, which is pretty salty for pancakes.

Another person got pumpkin pancakes. The waitress initially brought him some sort of French toast when he clearly ordered pumpkin pancakes. She seemed to have trouble hearing our orders, but got the rest of them correct and the replacement pancakes were out fairly quickly.  He said they were good, but had a slightly salty edge to them just like the pecan pancakes. He was also shocked all to hell that a side of ham cost $4.

As we sat there waiting for our orders to arrive, I observed a man at another table sending back a glass of obviously spoilt (it had chunks visible from across the room) milk. Yucko!

I might go back again in the middle of the week, if I happened to be in Poway. But there are other places to eat there, so maybe not. In other words, nothing special or original about this pancake house.

Every time I've passed by the Original Pancake House, there's always been a huge line....so you figure it's really good right? We tried it out for the first time this past weekend and it was just OK.  I might have expected more.  The portions were pretty big and the coffee was really good but as far as the food, it was decent.  Honestly, I like IHOP's buttermilk pancakes waaaay better and it's cheaper.

I had the opportunity to dine in this joint on a Saturday morning.  Long wait, but you know what that means.

The tables are really freaggin' crammed in there and you feel like your a little closer than comfort with your nieghbors.  So there's the -1 star.   But you have to look at it from their perspective, if there were less tables the wait would be longer.

I would have to reccomend the Irish breakfast.  It was like no other breakfast.  I have never even seen anything similar to it in other restaurants in San Diego.. or ever.  The omelet was cooked to form the shape of the skillet almost like a quiche.. and the latkes (patato pankcakes) were so so so good!

My friend orders the patatoes (read Natalia J.'s review for detail)

If Im ever in North County for breakfast I will return!

I love this place. Its consistently good paired with great service. I also have fond memories of this place. When i was still in Jr High and High School, my mom and I would take a special day on Monday, wake up early and go to breakfast here since school started at 9am on Mondays.

This place has the best waffle for me. I dont like thick belgian style waffles. this waffle is thin and crisp. Also, the waffle batter is so light, a bit sweet, its perfect balance of crisp and chewy goodness just gets my every time. I also love the corned beef hash. Then I get a side of american fried potatoes. Yes folks, that is all the food I order just for me in one sitting. I've also ordered the Dutch baby, which is a giant baked pancake thing. Its good, but quite eggy.

I love this place, and still come here when i want a guaranteed good breakfast and great service.

YUMMY. I love this place. I've been here a few times, and when it was busy. It's so worth the wait though. They have such a wide selection of breakfast entrees. The omelettes are so good. So is the Dutch Baby (smaller version of the German Pancake). Nice and fluffy. My personal fave is the Sausage&Bacon one. The Smokehouse bacon is nice&crispy but still chewy. The fresh squeezed orange juice is great. Love the pulpiness it has. But by far, I love the pancakes. That's what this place is known for. I love the traditional buttermilk pancakes with a little cream butter and maple syrup. MMM...so good. My friend David got the Pumpkin Pancakes one time and he let me try some of it. Really good I must say. This place has the most fluffiest pancakes ever. I will never get tired of this place. :)

I used to come here with my friends in High School every late Friday. It will always be a favorite.

This place has the best chocolate chip pancakes on Earth. Not only are there chocolate chips in the batter (little tiny ones EVERYWHERE) but the batter is chocolatey and they serve with with loads of powder sugar and a dollop of whipped cream. SOOOO GOOD.

If you don't feel like throwing up from a sugar high after have the strawberry crepes (3 in one serving) - they are my 2nd favorite.

You go Jasmin!!

Not only is this Poway branch good but there are OPH in Las Vegas and near Sacramento. I also highly recommend the Vegas one!

There's a few other  locations like Clairemont Mesa and Henderson, NV at the Green Valley Ranch Resort Hotel/Casino.

Update 11/17/07***
I sad to report that I am over OPH. The quality is  "factory " and  the food taste like mass production to me now than before. Thus, I am taking away the stars.

We came here on a Saturday morning, it was pretty busy but we waited barely 5 mins for a table. I got a sausage and cheese omelette. It comes with either toast or pancakes. It was huge. There is enough food for two or three people. A really good choice for people who LOVE eggs. If you don't I would consider something else. A really hearty breakfast. Our waitress was really nice and kept coming back to check on us. Really good service for a busy morning.

The Original Pancake House aka The OPH has 5  locations in the SD area. Poway, Kearny Mesa, Vista, Encinitas, & Temecula. Well Temec isn't quite SD but whatever...I've been to 3 of the 5 locations. I'm a fan, what can I say. The Apple Pancake & The Dutch baby are insanely good. You have to try one or the other.  Do you remember what it was like when you first heard the Beatles? You'll get  the same feeling when you try The Apple Pancake. I cried, you will too. If you're not in the mood to shed a tear, then try the French Toast with a side of bacon. Seriously, its the best bacon in town. Keep in mind, this place is super popular so there will usually be a bit of wait on the weekends. It'll be worth it though. You'll love it! Now go!

SO delicious.. We went on a sunday morning around 10ish.  There were a lot of people waiting outside but we only waited about 5-10 minutes for a table (party of 2).  I got a strawberry waffle, some eggs, and toast.  Husband got french toast with cinnamon sugar and these potatoes with onion, pepper, and ham.  Everything was amazing.  From the whipped cream to the orange juice to the strawberries on my waffle.. I was really impressed.  Also, the waitress was really nice and mom-like.  Overall a great experience and I hope I can go back soon!

Best pancakes in San Diego.  We've gone numerous times to the one in Poway and the one in Kearny Mesa and find both locations to be great.  Poway has shorter waits and a heated patio seating area.  The selection of pancakes are awesome, and my favorites are the 49er flapjacks and the dutch baby.  Their eggs benedict is good as well.  A simple restaurant for those looking for good food at a reasonable price.
