Love the food - it's pretty much the same to me between this place and the "New" Krung Thai restaurant.
Specific to this one, Parking is not as good as at the "New" one. Service seems quicker here- actually, let me rephrase.. Ate here tonight and was seated fast, ordered fast and they brought out A dish fast.. but they brought out my entree with the appetizer and the 2nd entree was staggered 5 minutes later and the 3rd entree 5 minutes after that.. so that was awkward.
This place is more outdated than the other "new" location. The New Krung Thai has better lighting and ambiance. That said, when New Krung Thai has a wait, I drive a few blocks and eat here :)
Tip- If you have a chance to come here for lunch, the lunch special is great. You basically get the dinner dishes at a cheaper price (it's soup, egg roll, rice & entree for $8) Can't beat that.
Best place so far!
Reasonable prices, but customer service could be improved.
Come here to enjoy the food, but don't expect to be treated the best. I've only tried Krung Thai for lunch. Usually, service is OK, food comes fairly quickly; but come at the peak of the lunch rush, and your waiter/waitress shows another side of themselves, that has made me rethink coming back. But, as one of those guys that doesn't really care much as long as I'm satisfied with the meal, I come back.
I normally order the Massaman Beef or Panang Fish. These are curry based lunch specials of which you can ask for at different levels of spiciness. I learned something new last time. If you ask for your dish to be "spicy", you'll go through a seemingly endless loop of being asked "'Hot' or 'Medium'?" until you offer answer with an acceptable exit condition. I used to order the medium because I thought I couldn't handle the hot. I recently started ordering at "Hot" spiciness, and noticed that not only could I handle it, but it really didn't taste any different from "Medium".
This Krung Thai is located next to a Chevron gas station and has limited parking. Often, one of the cooks will be in the parking lot directing customers to available spaces. Another bit of information, my buddies and I call this Krung Thai: "Toxic Thai" due to the presence of hazardous waste canisters from the gas station, and placed directly next to the walls of the building, this is how we distinguish it from the New Krung Thai further about a mile down the street.
Food: good.
Service: ranges from bad to average.
Bigger parking space than New Krung Thai + Consistent Great Taste = My #1 Thai place to eat at.
My experience here was okay, I guess. I ate here with a bunch of family and we ordered a lot of different dishes. As far as the hype about this place, I think it's slightly overrated. I thought the food tasted fine but their serving portions were smaller than most restaurants(good thing we ordered alot). The staff is friendly and courteous which is always a plus. Like I said, though, they could hook it up a little more with the food portions. It would even out the cost of the food itself. This is a nice restaurant to have Thai food but I can still think of a few other places that are overall better.
I've heard such good reviews about this thai restaurant! Whenever I eat thai I always get the yellow curry, so I thought i"d get it here.
The dishes here are are family style, meaning that it should be enough to feed a couple people.
I asked the waitress how big the bowl was and she just CUPPED HER HAND with her GUESS. i said "how big is the bowl? is it enough to feed more than one person? She just looked at me and curved her hands and said "that big"
Good customer service huh?
lame
When I first had Krung Thai a few years ago for dinner, I thought their food was really good. When I came back here for lunch, I thought it was just okay.
Their lunch specials are a pretty good deal for $7.95, and include soup, rice, and a small egg roll along with your dish. The portion sizing of your entree is a bit on the small side and you will definitely not have any leftover to take with you.
I ordered the beef seasoned with bamboo shoots, basil, and garlic. There were so many bamboo shoots and only a few small pieces of beef. The entire dish was also a bit on the salty side.
I am willing to give it another chance, and will probably go back some other time.
Still great! On a busy Saturday night when we'd turned away from 2-3 other places already and were starting to think about heading home, Krung Thai pulled through with fast service that serendipitously found us seated next to good friends.
One amazing thing about this restaurant my partner noticed: all the servers seem to be family, or at least act like it - no one cares where you're seated or who served you last, they just come take care of whatever you need instantly and seamlessly - so much so that it took many visits over years for us to notice this. Now THAT's impressive.
Also: this place is wonderful to vegetarians. Their tofu dishes are fantastic and they'll kindly and readily prepare you the veggie pad thai without egg upon request.
On the negative side, very poor bike parking options here. Plan to lock on a street post that's not nearby.

Good for a date, good for family, good for an easy night out with friends. This place never… Read more »
I'm Thai, and I don't mind going to Krung Thai. To me, that means a lot. When I go to Thai restaurants, I often ask myself, would they survive in Thailand? And I think Krung Thai would. Panang curry is good (one of a few handful restaurants in the US that I'd order curry). The Kang-Som is good. They have have a good variety and it means a lot to me that they make it similar to what you'd get in Thailand...or at least, not far off.
For the sweetness, yeah, it's a bit sweet. But you'd be surprised how sweet Thai people eat these days in Thailand...just put some more salt or fish sauce in..I guess. =)
I was forced to go here when I had major cravings for Krung Thai. The New Krung Thai was closed due to some remodeling so my friend and I decided to try the Old Krung Thai. It was packed and we thought we won't be able to find parking but there's this nice old man who was out there directing us to park, so cute! Hehe, anyway, that was the only good thing that happened that lunch hour. Our waitress was slow, rude, and horrible. The food was nothing compared to the New Krung Thai location. I had yellow curry with chicken and it was so thick and grainy it was gross. My friend had the beef with bamboo and the beef had a funky smell to it. Not coming here again!!! I'm so glad the New Krung Thai reopened in like a week! Phew!!
Best Thai food in town! So far, everything I've tried is delicious and never lets down. Service is awesome too.
I've driven down to Krung Thai from Sunnyvale for lunch in the rain one time that is how good it is.
i love spicy food! and this place is awesome.
had lunch with two of my gf's today at around 2:15.
we ordered some kind of soup that tasted like canh chua
pad thai
and something panang curry? with steamed rice.
everything was so good! hot! fresh! and fast!
they close at 3 for lunch and i was acting completely hysterical because i ate a large green pepper thinking it was an an artichoke HAHA! at this time it was already 3:15 and the waiters were still being so sweet and attentive to us. asian waiters usually suck ass at customer service (esp. when they are about to close) but this place is great!
i am def coming back! try the curry peeps! kinda sweet and a little spicy...but it's addicting!
I think it is safe to say that I LOVE Krung Thai .This is my favorite restaurant and everyone I have brought here has loved it too.
Ive been a regular for about 3 years. Ever since my cousin dragged me in here on a Sunday afternoon and forced me to eat their basil chicken. It was love at first bite. I haven't had anything I didn't like here and Ive tasted a good portion of the menu. I remember coming here at least once a week for a good 3 months. Ah, the good old days when I always had money...Anyways, these are a few of my favorite dishes: roast duck curry , pad thai, shrimp with garlic and chili sauce , basil chicken, spicy fried rice and the chow mien (even though chow mien isn't Thai food its still good!) Seriously people, try one of these dishes.
I don't know what else to say but this really is a great restaurant. Great food and great customer service. I cant ask for more......except maybe to win the lottery so I could buy Krung Thai and move them into my mansion so I could eat their food.....ALL THE TIME.
I have to say that of all the Thai places in the bay area, my family and I still come back to Krung Thai and think it's the best.
We love getting the basil chicken, garlic and basil prawns, red curry beef, pad thai, and the rama tofu. We always say that we're going to try something new, but the flavors of all these dishes are so yummy that end up getting the same thing.
When ever we have guests from out of town, we take then to Krung Thai and after dinner they too think we in the bay area have picked the best Thai place.
I do recommend that you go there and try one of the dishes i listed above. I'm sure you will be satisfied.
My fiance and I came here for dinner tonight and thought the food was amazing. We ordered pad thai, duck curry, and papaya salad. They were all very flavorful and delicious. The service was prompt, and our waiter was attentive to our needs. This has become our favorite thai restaurant, and we will definitely be coming back more often to satisfy our cravings.
YELP should have 1/2 rating too..but I'll just round it up to 4 stars when it's actually 3.5? It looks kinda dead and old from the outside but it's pretty nice inside. We went around dinna time but surprisingly the waiting was just 5 minutes! Their service was decent and the food came out in a decent time.
Since I saw everyone had a dish of pad thai on their table, I just gave a shot at it. It wasn't too bad actually. I like the flavor but I preferred thicker noodles. It reminds me of Vietnamese vermicelli, except it's Thai's style! We also got an order of chicken CURRY but I forgot exactly what kind. I think they have several different ones. Both dishes were good but just a tad expensive.
I've been having some bad experiences with Thai food lately (only good one has been in SF) and wasn't too sure when the man suggested we eat Thai food last night - I figured it would be more likely a miss based on my recent experiences.
Came in around 8pm and was seated right away - for a Tuesday night I was surprised on how packed it was - that was a good sign to me. I didn't get a chance to view the other table's entree's but I was craving Pad Thai but didn't want another flavorless dish so I just went with the Pad See Ew and he ordered the Yellow Chicken Curry (spicy) and the Satay as an app.
Now, I have never liked satay - even if someone orders it, I won't generally eat it - It's always been pretty dry and tasteless but this satay was juicy and moist - great peanut sauce to accompany it!
The Pad See Ew was good - not great and then I saw the Pad Thai came out and it looked and smelled delicious (DOH!). D's curry was perfect - the right amount of spiciness to it.
I would like to come here again to try their other dishes - the service was fast and friendly and loved the decor.
Whenever I go back to San Jose, this is the Thai restaurant I go to. The staff is friendly and my water glass is never empty. The portions are nice and the prices are very reasonable. I love the pineapple fried rice and the pad thai noodles!
I have to reduce my rave reviews for this establishment. The past couple of times I have been here, the dishes have all come out sweet, not the great blend of flavors and spices a Thai dish should be.
The last time I was there, we asked the waitress why everything was so sweet, and she said that the flavors are more localized now, since the locals like it this way. What a disappointment, as this was the only authentic Thai place in the South Bay.
I guess I'll now have to enjoy my Thai cravings up in SF, where it's a lot more authentic (Sai Jai, Ozone). Goodbye, Krung Thai!

NOT A FAN.
I had no time to cook our family Sunday dinner, so the old man suggested Krung Thai.
We were seated promptly around 6:30PM and ordered the following:
(1) Tom Ga Soup with chicken and mushrooms - too watered down, not enough flavor or veggies, chicken was too dry
(2) Tofu with chili and garlic - probably the worse tofu ever. Not fresh and looked like over cooked brown bits.
(3) Yellow chicken curry - the best thing they have here. The sauce is awesome but the chicken too dry . . . is there a chicken dry theme here or what?!
I don't like this place. I don't like the food, I don't like the parking location, and I don't like the post-bill candy either.
1 star for decent service and 1 star for the chicken curry.
We need better Thai restaurants in the South Bay or else I will be cooking Thai dinners at home forever.
best thai restaurant in regards of food, outside thailand.
you have to try the deep fried phad thai (JAN PAD PHOO)
the spicier the better.
all of their food in the menu are best.
rating in service 1 - 10, 5
rating for presentation 7
rating for taste 10
I was not impressed by this Thai restaurant at all. For one thing, it's hard to get to because the restaurant is hidden behind a big tree and parking is in the back.
My pineapple fried rice was fine. But the curry my friend ordered was not good at all. The beef was old and chewy and the curry wasn't good. It was more of a sauce soup than stew consistency. It was also pretty spicy for being mild! I wouldn't recommend this particular curry (the name slips my mind; but it's the one with all sorts of vegetables in it).
WARNING: Parties of FIVE get charged with automatic gratuity!
I'm eating here as I'm typing this and this is not a good Thai restaurant for the price.
Small portions that have ranges from lots to no flavor.
Go elsewhere to get more bang for your buck.
The hype leaves disappointed in myself for even eating here.
Yellow chicken curry lunch special;
Satisfying bowl of yellow curry with thick chunks of potatoes and pieces of chicken. A piping hot, mini eggroll and potsticker with a teaspoon of sweet and sour sauce on the side and of course steamed rice.
Tummy happiness.
P.S. Does it smell funny in here or is it just me?
I love the food at this place, really really love it. I always order the panang chicken curry, the spicy basil fried rice and the piece de resistance the crispy prawns with garlic. So here's the deal, if you like prawns and LOVE GARLIC you must order these. Today. They fry the garlic coated shrimp so fast that you can eat the shell if you want to. Which I do because that's where all the garlic is.
Is the service great here? NO.
Is the ambiance nice? Not really, but I'm ordering garlic covered fried prawns and beer - lets not kid ourselves.
Go for the food. Even do take out. It's delicious!
I work walking distance from this place & the other week, I ate here TWICE! Yeah, the food is that yummy. I always get the crab fried rice, duck curry or of course, the PAD THAI =) The old & new one (down the street) are exactly the same to me. Just that the new one is darker & a little bit nicer looking in my opinion-- but same prices & everything. If you like Thai food, this is definitely a good spot!
Sawadeeka!
This is our "go to" Thai place in SJ. They serve delicious Thai food for a reasonable value in a nice atmosphere. Be forewarned this place is usually crazy busy all the time and parking can be difficult. All I can say is good luck. We have turned away a couple times when seeing the line out the door to be seated....reservations here are a good thing.
Their Massaman curry is delicious, creamy and spicy. Husband loves their Lad Na or Pad Se Eew also. When we go with this parents they always order lots of interesting things that I, being a shy white girl, am too scared to try (they are from Thailand and don't mind the whole fish with eyes on the table....me on the other hand...) but the point is his parents really love this restaurant and they think the food is good. Most people working here also speak Thai so I can definitely confirm authenticity.
Order a Thai iced coffee for sure and save room for fried ice cream. If you want to be an A lister here learn to say thank you in Thai - "Cap koon kah" for ladies and "Cap koon kahp" for guys. You can thank me later!
L-O-V-E.. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS THAI restaurant. It's probably one the best Thai restaurants in northern cali. You have to try their tom yum seafood combo soup!! If you enjoy thai food, then you'll probably enjoy most of the dishes on the menu. Keep in mind they don't take reservations for parties of less than 6 people. And the line gets pretty long especially on the weekends.
Came here for dinner after a nice afternoon shopping at Valley Fair. Points for convenient location! And although some might find parking difficult at times, there were several open stalls behind the restaurant (access via the gas station).
-Tom yum soup was delish! Great flavor, and plenty of shrimp and mushrooms.
-Pad thai was okay, a little sweet but not more than most other Thai places I've been to. For some reason they had extra sugar as well as dried chili flakes piled on the side - I guess so you could stir in as much as you want? I'm really, really glad they left it on the side - we used the chili flakes and left the extra sugar alone!
-We also got the "jungle curry", which was a departure from my usual panang curry. It had a nice mix of ingredients, both veggies as well as chicken. I liked it.
Service was fine, and they kept filling up our water glasses. I wonder if that's because people can end up with a mouth full of fire if they're not used to spicy foods! I personally am fine with spicy foods, but still thought it was nice to always have a full water glass.
I've been coming here for many years and still is one of the Thai restaurants that I like. Everything is quite good (there's no particular dish that really stands out IMO) and the wait is long.
Parking is really awful because the lot is small. Sometimes it takes forever to find a parking space....
I love how there's an "old" and "new" Krung Thai restaurant and BOTH are on the same street!
Honestly, I never know which one I am at.
But who cares! The food is good and reasonably priced.
And while I've never had a spider crawl out of my rice (haha... sorry about that 'Jess W.' that sucks) the service here has been... eh, ok.
Otherwise, I'm always down for their FBI's!!!
Whoa.... where did my original review of this place go? Anyway, it's been so many years since I last ate here. Today I went to Valley Fair with my aunt for shopping. When we were done, we went to Krung Thai for a late lunch. We got the spicy pomfret from the lunch specials menu, a stir fried kang kung (water spinach) which was #134 on the menu, as well as a pork larb.
I thought the food was okay -- it wasn't spectacular but it wasn't bad either. It just wasn't highly impressive. Service wasn't bad, they kept coming to refill our water.
The lunch specials comes with an eggroll, a fried wonton and a soup -- soup was a watered down tom yum soup, not very good.
My friend was taking me out to dinner at a Thai Restaurant but I didn't know which one. As he started pulling up to a gas station, I thought he was getting gas but he made a right turn and parked in a parking lot. I was thinking WTF? But right next to the gas station was a restaurant. I was skeptical since there was no sign on it. Turns out it was the back of the restaurant. My friend led me to the front and my worries started to go away. There was a quaint little water fountain in the front and the inside of the restaurant is lightly dimmed and have a peaceful atmosphere to it.
I ordered the KWOEY TIEW PAD SRONG KREUNG, which is "Pan fried flat rice noodles with chicken, tomatoes, eggs & Chinese broccoli." 4/5 stars.
My friend ordered the GAENG KIEW WAAN PLA MUEK, which is "Calamari stuffed with marinated minced pork, simmered in green curry paste in coconut milk with Thai eggplants, sweet peas, bell peppers & sweet basils." 5/5 stars! I liked his dish more than mine.
Bottom line: I enjoyed dinner and the service was quick and friendly. They bring you a glass of water before you even sit down! My friend also claims that this as probably the best Thai restaurant in San Jose.
I've been eating here way back when they were located on san carlos/stevens creek during the early to mid 90's. It's changed a lot since then. From being a hole in the wall that had pink table top linen with one or two servers to a top notch Thai restaurant recognized by nearly everyone in the south bay as a worthy place to dine. I hear grandma is still in the back cooking the same dishes that they used to have from the very beginning and service has expanded to two locations; both of which are located on Winchester Blvd. near the Westfield Shopping Mall & Santana Row.
here is my breakdown of the current Krung Thai:
Food: 4 / 5
Hasn't changed much and is remarkably delicious.
Service: 2-3 / 5
Service level dropped dramatically as direct descendants of the owner probably aren't waiting on you anymore.
Atmosphere: 4/5
Clean environment and chill ambiance, good for dinner unless you're seated next to someone you don't like as place is small and seating is in close proximity.
Price: 4/5
Just about the right price for Thai food.
The lunch specials give you more bang for you buck and comes with a relatively big heap of rice.
I am the "meat and potatoes type of girl" and even own a plate that proclaims this, but I simply loved the green curry despite its mounds of bamboo shoots and peas.
Panang fish curry - I thought it had a decent amount of fish despite some reviews I read, but it is more watery than the four other curries I tried here, which seemed to have a lot more milk and were denser. Therefore, the consistency isn't my cup of tea and the only distinct flavor it had was spiciness.
Jan Pad Phoo - the crab meat noodle dish that always sounded curious to me. It was very fragant, though not flavorful at all and the crab meat was scant and shredded. Portion was small. Only try once in your life, please.
KWOEY TIEW NEUA SUP - Okay I ordered this because I am an adventurous eater and since I was always a fan of their Pad See-ew, I wanted to try this noodle dish that also consisted of pan fried flat noodles. The gravy sauce on top sounded ominous like some mysterious cafeteria lunch concoction, and that was exactly what it tasted like.
The angel wings appetizers were like angels from heaven. They gave a decent portion for this appetizer, unlike some other ones. ahem ahem.
Mango and Sticky Rice - It felt like the coconut milk had evaporated and there was not much of the thicker coconut milk sauce. They did however give us a whole mango with the sticky rice. My friend and I each had half a mango each, beautifully sliced.
I came here for an anniversary dinner a couple of years ago and I fell in love (with the food LOL). My favorite dishes that I always order are the 'angel wings', 'sweet and sour chicken', 'chicken pad thai', 'crab fried rice' and 'tom yum soup'. The taste is consistent and flavorful and just overall good-cooking! Service seems rush but they're really busy and packed, but being a former server, I understand.
I still return every now and then but I gotta thank my former guy for taking me to such a great place.
Tom kha gai. The medium is huge. Some other thai restaurants give you tiny portions when you order soup so for 3 people we thought we would need a medium. We were wrong. We ended up taking half of it home. I wouldn't mind having this soup for lunch the next day though. Good stuff.
Larb. This was in the salad portion of the menu. We wanted to try something aside from the usual green papaya salad we get. It was like ground up chicken with some shredded carrots. Not really a salad but it was good so I'm not complaining.
Beef kra-tuen. Fried beef sauteed with garlic n pepper. This was the one dish of the evening that I didn't like. It was really dry and had no flavor.
Catfish curry. The catfish was deepfried then thrown into curry sauce. There was eggplant in here too. It was good. We got medium spicy but it wasn't spicy at all.
The environment was nice. The food was a bit pricey but that was expected.
I come here every so often to have dinner. The fried rice, pad see yew, and pad thai are pretty good. My favorite was the spicy duck curry even though the medium spicy was a bit more on the hot side, it was still really good.
Everything else ive had is just okay, nothing special.
Dont forget that they close from 3pm- 5pm. I came at 250 and they still allowed me to eat there and the service was great. The older waitresses were really friendly and always refilled our water.
The boyfriend and I were craving thai cuisuine for lunch, and he recommended this place. I like the simple, yet elegant decor of the place. It had that exotic south asian feel to it. It was nice and clean too.
We were seated immediately, which wasn't surprising because it was barely 3 p.m., so I don't know how packed it usually is for dinner. For lunch, there was a few families, and couples eating lunch.
Started us out with water with lemon wedge, even before we were given the menu, which I think more restaurants should do. Sometimes I forget water is essential to my meal, so I forget to order, and I go out of my way later on, to get eye contact from a waiter to get me water.
We ordered 2 thai teas, an order of chicken satay, pad thai, and panang curry lunch special. Chicken satay was AWESOMEE!! Great peanut sauce, wasn't too sweet nor too bland. Nice and thick too!. The panang curry was so-so. The waiter was soo nice, suggesting I should order the lunch special, because its cheaper and still a good amount of food. The pad thai was delicious, not too saucy, nor too dry. I love how they put the beansprouts, chili peppers, peanuts and sugar on the side, so we can mix it ourselves
Overall I had a great experience.. I'd definitely come back again.
Service= 5/25. It is sad to say that they treat people like you are an unwelcomed guest. Sometimes, not always, you may have to wait 20 min to get someone to get your order. There is this lady that is a totall snatch. i usually tip 20 percent at every restuarant, but one time i was so offended by how rude she was, that i didn't leave a single dollar for a tip. I've been here many times, and 3/10 times i will get a decent waiter and a decent experience. So, don't expect to get bad service all the time, but don't be surprised when you do.
Location= 20/25 very close to shopping and theatre. enough said.
Price= 22/25 May be a little pricey to some, but the food is exquisite.
Food=24/25 Spicy basil chicken fried rice, basil chicken, pad thai, Curry, and many more items are mouthwatering. even if the service was 5/25, the food taste and quality is enough to get you in there and be slapped around like a dog.
Overall= 71 percent
