The Onion is never a disappointment.  The food isn't haute cuisine but the food is always great and the service is extraordinary.  Premium burgers and fantastic sides are the stars of this menu.

Really fun atmosphere! The wooden bar is marvelous.  The onion rings are huge and delicious.  The burgers are just standard fare.  The diet meal was bland and flavorless. The Thai wrap was big and bursting with flavor. All in all a fun place for a night out. The food is just the standard bar fare.

The French onion soup is awesome. Great bar selection. Pricy tho.Waiter service was amazing. Even though they don't have chili cheese fries they offered to run to the store and they where SERIOUS TOO. Gotta love that level of service.

I have been to the Onion several times, and I am never blown away by anything in particular, the prices are on the higher end considering what you are getting and it reminds me of every other chain restaurant in town. Nothing special, but I will say the huckleberry margarita's are delicious.

My husband grew up in Spokane, so he always wants to come here when we visit.  As a vegetarian, a burger place is not my idea of fun, but I can always make due.

I tried the Thai Chicken Wrap--without chicken--and I thought it was excellent.  Spicy and tasty.  My husband was happy with his burger and both our kids enjoyed their food and dessert.

It was fun to watch all the cool vintage cars "cruising" on Riverside.  Not sure if this is an every Friday occurrence or if there was a special event but it added to the charm.

Dinner here tonight with daughter & wife. Dinner consisted of two burgers w Fries, pulled pork sandwich glass of beer, wine, lemonade. Tab was~$60 before tip. Never asked how we'd like our burgers. Both came cooked beyond done,-really dried out. Pulled pork no better. No BBQ sauce offered either. For a place that specializes in Burgers this is inexcusable. Red Robin beats these guys by a country mile. Burger King is better.

I agree with the previous poster who said it was like Red Robin. I would say the service is much better than Red Robin, but the atmosphere is a little below Red Robin (could probably use a little remodel).

We had a Chicken Ceasar Wrap (YUM) and a Club Sandwich (YUM). The fries were very good and the adult beverages were quite strong. Parking is easy.

It appears they have a Play Zone for kids- AWESOME. If I had kids, I would really appreciate this.

Another really cool thing is that they have plenty of seats for people who are waiting for a table.

Give this place a try! You wont be disappointed.

It's like Red Robin with a little more flare.

I ordered the Black Jack burger..  sautéed onions & mushrooms with black pepper sauce and jack cheese. And just like the familiar RR, all burgers come with bottomless steak fries.

The Onion does have a one-up on the Dirty Bird tho. If you don't feel like fishing around the mushy steak fries for the few crunchy ones in the mix, you can sub for the super crunchy homemade potato chips instead! Yes I am that excited about these chips, they're pretty awesome. You can also get fresh cabbage slaw instead... I've never tried the slaw so I can't vote yay or nay.

Now of course a restaurant called The Onion has onion rings. And yepp, they're freakin phenomenal. Beer battered, they come out with a homemade tartar sauce and are ginormous - each n every one of em are the size of a burger patty. If you eat here, you have to order the rings. You'll be sad if you don't and the table next to you does.

As Yogi Berra said "This is like deja vu all over again."

Some things never seem to change - and the Onion is one of them. It had been some time since I visited the Onion, and I thought it was an appropriate place to meet a childhood friend that was visiting here in Spokane.  Because it is on the north side of town, I just never seem to visit it any more.  I remembered it with both fond and disquieting memories (not the Onion's fault) from many years ago - and was surprised that it is still the same - casual and comfortable, with slightly above average food.  The service is great with perky greeters and cheerful servers.

The food is typical bar food, reminiscent of the Red Robin, or TGIF, but, as mentioned in other reviews, locally owned.  We sat in the bar, and after drinking to old times and  friends, ordered from a lengthy menu.  The food at our table included a French Dip sandwich, Fish and Chips, a spicy thai salad, and a stuffed baked potato.  All the food was good, and the portions large.

Matt, the bartender, served us, and was very helpful, and accommodating. He was very attentive, but not intrusive - just right.

All in all, it was a great evening - and I would recommend the Onion if one would like a casual dining experience with good service.

    Deep Fried Oreos.

    Disgustingly delicious?  Oh yes.

The burgers, onion rings, and drinks are all great as well.  It was a fun spot to hit up with friends for appetizers or a full meal.  Their reader board quips always made me smile for some reason.

It's a great joint to hit up with family or friends.

Very much like a TGI Fridays or Ruby Tuesdays with a locally owned twist.  The food is what you would expect at the usual prices but fresher than the usual in my opinion.  Best to place to go on the menu would be the burgers, it's pretty hard to miss with any of them.

The bar and pool room have plenty of TVs and if it's a "big game" (read: Zags), you can usually convince the bar staff to turn down the godawful canned music and turn up the game.  What really sets this place above the others are the bartenders, they are fast, pour a good drink, and know when you want to chat or just shut-the-hell-up.  My only real gripe is the way the beer prices have crept by nickles and dimes to a price that is getting hard to justify, AND THEY CHARGE SALES TAX ON TOP OF THAT!!!

Full disclosure- when I am in Spokane you can usually find me sitting at table 105 in the bar with the usual suspects.  Yes, I agree, it a sad pathetic statement about oneself when you know the table number you are barflying (is that a word?).

I knew I was going to get something to eat in Spokane... The question was where...

3 places came into mind, The Steer In, Zips or The Onion.
The first two being greasy spoon burger joints that I could take with me and continue driving.

For both memory sake and the fact that I wanted to get out of the car, have a beer and relax for a bit, I decided to go to The Onion...

I can't believe the place is still there, honestly.
I went to this place 20 some years ago when there was only one location.

Reminds me of a Red Robin type place that is local to Spokane.

Had a Black N Bleu burger with onion rings, even though it came with fries or cabbage slaw I decided to skip out on those... With the burger, you have a choice of quarter lb or half lb.

Onion rings were mmmm, mmmm good.  Burger was decent.

Sat at the bar and the service was decent.

If wanting for a place to stop by and get out of the car for a decent meal before heading up Hwy 395 or Hwy 2, this would be one place I'd suggest would be a possibility.

The Onion was more than disappointing! Two stars is being nice. I have been here before so I wasn't expecting the world... I knew what the ambience was (similiar to The Ram/ Red Robin type place) so I wasn't turned off by that... however the food was TERRIBLE. We were a party of 8 and NO one was remotely impressed with their meal, and we all ordered different things! The fish and chips were $15.99 and dry and few, came with more fries than anything (in Seattle you can get amazingly better fish and chips for $8). Also my niece ordered the fettuccini and it was just noodles with TONS of garlic butter... no flavor just a sickening buttery dish that any 12 year old could concoct. Even my other nieces kids grilled cheese sandwich was made with extremely dry bread...and the chicken fried steak which when ordered our waiter said was "one of the best things on the menu" was dry and tasteless... just overall food quality was amazingly LOW and reminded me of food you get in a school cafeteria... I honestly would say don't waste your money ever eating here when you get a better meal anywhere else (even fast food would be tastier, and I am not a fast food fan)...

Cons: Food is bland, dry and overall disappointing also overpriced for the quality.

Pros: Service wasn't bad, and they sat us right away even on a weekend with 8 people (which should have been my first sign! Lol)

We love the Onion!  We usually go tot he downtown location and are never disappointed.  It can get pretty crowded but the waits are never too long.

I love their onion rings to start, which is their specialty.  The are huge and come with the best tartar sauce!  The chips and salsa are great as well, and are endless.

I always usually order the Backyard Burger, which is a bacon BBQ cheesburger.  I think it's the best burger in town.  Their fries are also great (and also bottomless!) and make sure you ask for tartar sauce for the fries.  The Oriental Salad is also really good if you're looking for something lighter.

They have a nice bar area as well.  The service is always really good and everything is affordable.  I love this place!

The Onion was great. We only had to wait about 5 minutes before getting a table. The table was pretty large for 3 people, and I liked that!

I started off with a nice 25oz brew which was actually brewed in Spokane.  Next it was time to decide what to order. I ended up getting a burger with cheese, and a large onion ring on it. Loved the fact that you can choose what type of bun! Our cute server also was nice enough to ask if we'd like any sauces with our meals. I opted for both their tartar and ranch, you know, to see how they faired against other places.

Overall great. Not sure what else I can say.

Excellent Onion Rings, and as it was mentioned before, they truly are as big as donuts! lol

I enjoyed the Oriental Salad and nibbled on my husband's burger and onion rings. Everything tasted fresh and delicious, my huckleberry lemonade was perfect  too.

It helped that our server was friendly and efficient too.

I have been going to The Onion since 1991 when I moved to Spokane.  What a great place to hang out with friends and eat!   I've actually spent several hours there with friends, often closing it out, and never felt pressured to leave or even purchase more food or drinks.  I moved from Spokane in 2003, but still make it a point to go there every visit and the servers actually remember me!  It's amazing and must eat/drink place when in Spokane!

Onion rings that are the size of donuts!!!!

I could make a meal just out of the onion rings. OMG...yum!!!! The burgers are excellent and the mini-desserts are a great idea for the little 'dessert compartment' we all have in our tummy :)

Service is great. Atmosphere is festive, but not overly noisy. Fine for well-behaved kids too.

This is best in the pack that the national chain Applecrap's trawls the bottom of.  The Onion is a great local place, a step above similar places.  The staff makes the place, just good people.  The food is honest, well priced - your not overpaying for what your getting.  The beer taps are rotated well, no flat beer.

Overall its a great place.  Know what your getting, most importantly, know your not overpaying for microwaved food that predominates this restaurant segment.  Trust me, your going to be putting better ingredients into your body at The Onion than Applecrap's, Red Robin or the rest of the national chains.

The Onion is consistent and pretty good. Best parts are the burgers, onion rings (heck, the fried food in general), and sandwiches -- I especially like the french dip. Portions are large. Service is generally nice and pretty quick. I first went there as a kid, and thought it was great fun. Nothing has really changed my mind since.

Oh My Golly! The ONion is da' Bomb!

Okay..now you can take me seriously. Last weekend while visiting my cousin in Spokane we decided to eat at The Onion. Myself, I'm from the south of Washington and I'm not too familiar with Spokane, only having been there a handful of times. So back to last weekend.... Roadtrippin' with Grams and Gramps to Spokane to visit my cousin who is currently attending Gonzaga. Gram says, where do you wanna eat? Cous says the ONion! My favorite place! So we hop in Gramps' pimpin truck and head to this location of the ONion. We get in there and the place is booming! There are peeps all over and so we get one of those things that beeps when your table is ready and hang out for a bit-but a very reasonable time considering the crowd. We get to our booth and we are immediately greeted by a kind young stallion ready to take our drink orders. We order;  first comes Grampa's chowder, he quickly devours and make a posotive comment. Next comes Cousins Edamame-The entire devours, again greatly enjoyed. Next come our meal at a very promp and quick time.  I ordered the Bleu Cheese Burger-incredible if I say so myself. Not only was the Burger GREAT but the best part was the ONion Rings!! I tried one and was in instant HEAVEN!! Im talkin' PARADISE! All the other meals were so great too!! The waiter was kind and helpful making sure our cups were never empty. Grandma even told him he looked like Russel Crow (True Dat) and he suddenly picked up an Australian accent. NExt came the fried oreos, to die for!! As you can see from this long entry that the whole experience was great with a wonderful, light environment. I would gladly support the ONion any time!

The food is not good. If you're looking for food in this category then drive a little further up north and hit Red Robin. The food and experience is ok, The Onion saw it's best days in the mid 90's and hasn't done much to change since. If you go expect: crazy bday song, cheese sticks, lots of balloons for the kids up front and several sides of your favorite sauces (tarter, ranch, bbq...).

I have gone to The Onion about 3 times and have concluded that they are just ok.  I enjoy the French Onion soup..it is delicious.  The Navy Bean soup is good too.  However, everything else is just ok..including the service.  One time the server mess up my order and on another occasion I had to wait extremely long for refills.  All in all, if you want good soup, it is a great place to go.

Great burgers, not quite as good as Red Robin but that is hard to top IMO.  But Red Robin is too much like those Carl's Jr. commercials with the cheesy birthday songs and "Flare".  I like the more laid back atmosphere at the Onion.  I had one bad experience there but I mostly blame the crappy waitress so I gave it 4 stars.

Nice service in the bar. The onion ring appetizer was big and ok. My burger was a 2-1/2 star as the menu said "world class burgers" but didn't live up to that. My wife said her stuffed baked potato was good. I would go again to get full but the food didn't blow me away. Good beer selection.

This place has great onions rings, if you love the large, greasy, crispy kind. The have the typical bar food-chicken strips, calamari, burgers, fish and chips, etc. I had the onion rings, of course (how can you go to The Onion and not have them??!) and I had a buffalo chicken burger. Both were great, not the best. If you like bar food, which I got to admit, I need it sometimes, then this is the place for you!

This place, as mentioned previously, is in the same vein as Chile's and Applebee's. I've kind of gotten my fill of these types of places but I was outvoted by my friends who said it looked interesting. It was actually pretty nice on the inside and was pretty much what I expected. Unfortunately that's the bad part. The food was serviceable and had the standard fare for this type of restaurant. I guess I shouldn't really complain because it's not really trying to be something it's not. I guess it's just not my type of place.

I've been to the onion many times and it never disapoints. Decent menus options: burgers, salads, soups, sandwiches,a few pasta offerings and basic seafood items like salmon and fish n chips. Obviously anything with onions is a good choice and they have especially good onion rings. Nothing really wrong with the place it just doesn't wow me enough for the price to get a higher rating. Place could use a new decorator, a bit busy with the Harley and all the stuff on the walls
