One of the best breakfast places I've been to in Tahoe! The service was quick and extremely helpful in deciding how to "build your own" breakfast, despite all of the options, and the bacon was perfect. The woman helping us also suggested saving any leftover potatoes for burrito stuffing later. Brilliant!
The only thing I could find wrong was that the coffee tasted like water and wasn't that effective. Then again, that's pretty much what I expect from breakfast places and the food and service easily made up for it.
excellent place in north lake tahoe. got the carnelian bay sandwich with sliced roast beef, mushrooms, onions and melted cheese (minus the tomatoes) on a french roll. OMG, i was in heaven. wouldn't call it a cheesesteak, but it was even better than a cheesesteak.
this place rocks!! oh yea, and the french fries are awesome. :o)
Surprisingly, I had no hangover after four drinks the night before. This place made me wish for one so I could cure it with the chicken-fried steak and eggs.
Instead, I ate the breakfast, drank a lot of water, and luxuriated. The next morning we tried to get into the Log Cabin and failed. Half-hour wait. But screw 'em. Go to the Old Post Office Cafe and try the chicken-fried steak. Try the Hollandaise, as Adam did. Just don't ask for health-conscious. I don't think it's on the menu!
One complaint: An extra $0.75 for cream cheese? WTF, people??
Positives: offers "half" portions (which are still big, but not as obesity-inducing "regular" portions), can upgrade to real maple syrup for $2.25
Negatives: very low-end ingredients used. Bloody Mary had a strong taste of cheap canned tomato juice and tons of horseradish (probably to try to mask the bad taste). French toast was made with a cheap commercial bread. Syrup served before we "upgraded" to the real thing was totally foul: you can taste the high fructose corn syrup, see the added gum from its consistency, and only imagine that it also contains Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Caramel Color, Sodium Benzoate and Sorbic Acid. The crab cakes used in the crab cake egg benedicts (not a winning combination, BTW), were probably frozen.
I can't reconcile our experience with the other reviews here, but we're certainly not going back--and there are plenty of great breakfast places in North Tahoe!
Been coming to the OPO for about 10 years now.
I've had the Omlettes, Waffles, Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, Mimosas, OJ, Coffee...just about all the favorites. All are 5 stars in my book.
Attentive staff and great food. I was here at the beginning of a snow storm this Sunday. Cozy inside while it snowed gently outside. What more can you ask for with your breakfast?
Great breakfast place. We were looking for some breakfast before our big hike, they had all the classics, lots of options! Very Yummy! Just put your name on the list, or we were able to find a spot at the bar right away!
I LOVE this place!! I have been eating here for years and it is BY FAR the best breakfast around the lake! If you are just passing through Tahoe and near the north shore you must eat here. Try their breakfast burrito; great value and huge proportions!
It was ok - a good diner sort of place. I'd use it as a stand-by if my hands are tied on what to eat... but next time I'm in Tahoe I'll probably want to try some other places....it wouldnt be a first choice, yet.
I'm not saying it was bad, because it wasnt...just not my favorite this time around.
I haven't found another breakfast place in the North Lake Tahoe area as good as The Old Post Office. Our classic stand by are the pancakes w/ blueberry & bananas - homemade batter, fluffy, and extra delicious. Their scrambles and omelets are what you'd expect and they do the job. They have a wide menu selection and their biscuits are also good. Prices are average and the wait on the weekend can be lengthy. We made the good decision of going on a Friday around 10:30am and got the last table for 2. Their counter and outdoor seating is always an option.
Solid breakfast. We all agreed that it was a place to return again on this trip. The kids could have split one meal and one milk as their portions were quite generous - and they certainly didn't skimp with the adult meals. Paula got a veggie scramble and was quite pleased - she thinks they use butter for oil. In any event this is a solid breakfast place - and we are snobs about breakfast.
I LOVE THIS PLACE.
I spend my winters in tahoe, summers back home in wiscoooonsin. and i crave this place so bad when I'm back home. It's hard to find a breakfast place that a good variety of food, great pancakes, and healthy eating choices! Everything is made from scratch! Even the orange juice is freshly squeezed. Early mornings can be busy, so i usually go a little later on.
The waitstaff is usually on their game, and once you order the food comes pretty fast. I can't gush enough about this place. It is my favorite breakfast place of all time. yum yum yum!!! :)
One of my favorite breakfast spots in Tahoe. The crab cake benedict is absolutely amazing and I crave it every time I am away. Though I do usually get the benedict I have also had the biscuits and gravy, which are amazing, and the hangover helper, which is a bit heavy but just what you need we you can't seem to shake the hangover. The service is always on top of it, but you definitely have to cut them some slack on weekends because damn they are busy! My favorite place to sit is at the counter with a paper, nothing beats it.
Important things to know:
- NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED (which is awesome because i hate the sound of cell phones as well as people talking on them ... especially that early in the morning). And believe me, they will enforce it.
- Free licorice on the way out, a perfect way to start the day.
Good breakfast stop! Good quality and quantity for the price.
We came here on the recommendation fo the manager/ owner of the Tahoe Vistana Inn, where we stayed saturday night. Arriving about 945, we were seated immediately at a nice table in the main room. The place had a very hometown feel & in the next 15 minutes the place filled up to the brim, with many waiting for a table to open up. Within those 15 minutes we were served our drinks, 2 white chocolate mochas the size of lake tahoe, our orders were taken & our breakfast was served.
SUPER FAST. omg.
I got sunnyside up eggs, biscuits & gravy, homefries & bacon. Every ounce of my meal was insanely good. the biscuits were perfect & the sausage gravy was like it came from the south.
Service was excellent, as i recall 3 separate people serving, taking the orders & checking on us at varied times.
Now just because i gave this place 5 stars, dont expect white linen fine dining. this place is a sweet local diner with all the trimmings. there may be dust here n there. But you will get fabulous food with fabulous service & that is worth all the stars i can give.
Sometimes the good things come to you when you're not really looking. We were on a drive on the loop from Truckee to North Lake Tahoe and back and got hungry right around this place. I'm glad we did.
The restaurant has a home town feel and very friendly, cozy, charming vibe to it. The waitresses are nice and remind me of Mel's Diner. I was half expecting them to call me "sugar pie" or "honeybuns". Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed when they did not. I was too busy being taken by the food. Great eggs benedict and coffee and their soup of the day(with some Texas toast) was divine.
If I'm ever roaming around in this area again, I'd definitely stop by. You might even learn something about one of the locals or get some juicy gossip!
Delicious, hearty, and fast. Had the crab cake benedict. Recommend you only get the half portion unless you're about to spend the day deforesting Tahoe by hand. BTW you can get PANCAKES as a side dish.
Honestly, I was really hoping I was going to get a first here, but it looks like this Mark character beat me to it by a few days. Oh well.
The portions were enormous. For reals tho! I ordered an omelet for like $9 or something. When the waitress returned with our food, I was shocked to see I had a mountain of eggs with what I think was a whole avocado stuffed in it. Next to that I think I had 5 russets worth of home fries. And then five minutes later she shows up with a stack of pancakes.
Needless to say, I only ate half of the mountain of food, probably less. But, if you decide that you need a lot of food, go Postal!
absolutely awesome little hole in wall breakfast joint with prices below 15 dollars a person. I can go on forever, but trust me you need to try it!
Best breakfast on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Great people, good food, reasonable prices for large portions. Local favorite
This place has been a Tahoe staple for a long time and is a very popular breakfast stop that there is almost always a wait. The food is a bit greasy and the menu is typical for a breakfast joint but the food is great and the service is wonderful.
It will give you a full tummy for a long day on and around the lake.
The Old Post office gets crowded, but they turn tables quick. It really might be, as the menu claims, the "fastest service in North Lake Tahoe." They seated our group of 8 at separate tables, but made every effort to insure that we were near eachother. The menu was really diverse... want fresh smoothies? want steel cut oatmeal? biscuits and gravy? all of the above? You'll get it here. The quality of the meal was good and, as a previous poster mentioned, very helpful for a hangover :) For 8 people, with tip, we spent just about $150- not bad at all. It would be a solid five stars if I hadn't found Log Cabin (just down the road) first! Still, it's a solid place with a little Lake kitch. Enjoy!
I've got two words for you: Hangover Helper. Even if you're not hungover (which, on a recent Saturday morning, amazingly enough, I wasn't!), you gotta go fer it.... it's a heart attack waiting to happen, but worth every clogged artery. Two warm, soft biscuits layered with sausage patties and a crapload of homemade sausage gravy. WAIT, I'm not finished - also served with a heap of home fries and 2 eggs.... OMFG, so good. This place is just down the road from my winter ski lease, and I am ashamed (proud?) to say I came here for breakfast 3 days in a row this past weekend. That's how good it is... I am sad - my ski lease ends this weekend which means no more Hangover Helper for me unless I come back this summer.... Bottom line, go here if you are in N Lake - you won't regret it. It's worth a little bit of a drive if you are staying in Tahoe City, West shore, etc.
mMmmmmMM cheesey, heart clogging, creamy goodness. Portion sizes are generous, and the menu is vast - but keeps to the basics. Eggs, pancakes, sausages, omelets, burgers, sandwiches, soups, milkshakes, smoothies, coffee, lattes and POTATOES. This place has something to satisfy anyone who wants to eat something from open to close.
HUGE helpings. I had the waffle special and it was ok, but I clearly didn't choose the right dish. The hangover helper is good call as is the logjammer or whatever the the hungryman breakfast is called. The pancakes were good as were the eggs, hash browns, sausage, etc. This place loses points for their crappy bloody marys (no alcohol, straight-up mix), but evens the playing field with their mimosas that come with a separate mini bottle of champers. Good food cheap - what more can you really ask for?
Recommended by a local, this was a great breakfast place. I mean we did ask for the greasiest spoon though. It's a cute little restaurant with a bar seat reserved for Al Schwartz the OG owner of the old PO when it really was a PO. Great breakfast!
Yummy stuff. This place has been around for a long time and with good reason. Years and years ago we had a ski cabin for the winter and would come here - loved the place - fondly remember the potatoes! Fast forward about 20 years and I'm still remembering the potatoes though most of the rest of my memory is shot. We looked the place up on Yelp and hurray!- it's still in business. So we head over and I order a breakfast burrito and son orders pancakes. He got three pancakes- the size of his plate! HUGE, thick pancakes! Judging from the empty plate they must have been good. Now I've lived long enough to know that some things are just better left a memory - not so the potatoes here! They're just as good as I remember them being! The service is great- it's a real friendly pull up a chair and gossip with the locals place- which is just what our waitress did. I love places like this. Next time I'm coming back for lunch - the french fries (I'm sensing a potato obsession here) looked just awesome as they were paraded past our table. Good food, good service, good prices. You can't lose here.
We went here after a disappointing attempt at service at the Blue Onion. So glad things worked out the way they did! The food here was awesome and relatively cheap! What a relief! Down-home cooking and service! They get very busy, but we were seated at the counter right away. There was a slight lag in the service, which is why I couldn't give it the full 5 stars.
sometimes, a greasy spoon diner is what we all need, and the old post office cafe does it well. we were there on the weekend, and there was a line, but it moved quick. the service was friendly, but minimal. the servings, however, were not. all in all, good, fatty stuff that's perfect for an active day on the lake or trails.
hands down the best breakfast in all of Tahoe! love love love their crab cake benedict and hang over helper specials (biscuits with sausage patties and gravy, hashbrowns and two eggs. lovely outdoor seating and very pet friendly!
