6 reviews for The Old Oyster Factory
Hilton Head Old Oyster Factory is a large, wide open restaurant that offers a great selection of seafood, steaks and fresh oysters in a casual family friendly environment.
The restaurant, located on Marshland Road, features a stunning view of Broad Creek and it's marshes. The interior reminds me of a Vermont Ski Lodge, complete with exposed wood beams and wide open dining rooms.
The oysters were outstanding and service was excellent. Wine list was extensive and fairly priced. I'm looking foward to my next meal at the Old Oyster Factory.
I always ultimately enjoy my time at the Old Oyster Factory, a staple visit during our weeklong stay in HHI every summer. This year, the high light was the view from teh back deck!! If you go here, you will most likely have to wait for a table for at least a half hour... Walk around the right side of the building along the little oyster bay area to the back deck... This year it had stormed like crazy about an hour before we arrived for dinner. The sunset was possibly the most gorgeous sunset I have ever seen. From their back deck, you have an almost 360deg view of Broad Creek and it truely is beautiful!!
The view is gorgeous! The food is pretty basic:) I mean it's a seafood place so they grill it or fry it and serve it with potatoes or rice and vegetable. They do give you hush puppies to start with which is nice!!
For us, this was one of the best seafood experiences that we had on the island. The shrimp and scallop pasta was good. Other dishes had a nice presentation not found in similarly priced restaurants (krusty crazy crab). The service was great- the waitress kept the plate warm for our friend while she fed her kids. She had never experienced that before.
If you visit HHI, there is a high probability you will try this restaurant. That's perfectly acceptable, just don't have high expectations. The pros are: group friendly, kid friendly, and large windows to look out onto the creek. The cons are: the food and the food. I hate to say this but Old Oyster offers only a small step above Red Lobster. They lure you in by offering deliciously fried hush puppies just like the cheesy biscuits at RL. Then your main entree comes and you are sorely disappointed. Let's break it down. We had the oyster sampler, which came with 4 kinds of oysters. All of them were fine except for the Pickle-something ones. Those were puny and tasteless. Three of us ordered the Seafood Medley. Gross. The scallops were not fresh and over-cooked. Whatever kind of fish they threw in there was nasty. The shrimp was the size of RL shrimp. And the cooked oysters were only good because they were drowning in cheese and grease. One person ordered the special Tilapia dinner that was served with seafood on top and a lemon cream sauce. In Midwestern fashion, throw some cream sauce on there and you've got yourself a meal. Gag. The only dish that looked decent was the crab cakes. I didn't try any but they were huge with large chunks of crab.
My advice is to take your family here, fill them up on hush puppies and enjoy the view. You'll have a great time!

Bleh. I look back with remorse because at the time I visited the Old Oyster Factory, I didn't like oysters. Sigh.
Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable experience. The Old Oyster Factory is in a rather remote area, and the vast parking lot appropriately reflects the huge restaurant. It's fairly casual and family-friendly, but if you're lucky you can snag a romantic window seat next to the ocean.
Polite service, extensive menus; I remember ordering a decent fish. But the real gem was the mascarpone cheese dessert pastry.
The only reason for two stars is the view. After that, very disappointing.
Way over priced, average food. If you want a tourist trap, this is the place. We met a local chef who told us that he applied for a job @ OOF many years ago and they were par baking sheet pans of fish @ 10:00 a.m. The name says it all. FACTORY! - Do yourself a favor, go to a mom & pop shop.
