Weak reviews on this place...come on folks.....put your "backs into it!!!" Write some thing will you....
The NC Arboretum is a very large public garden, over 400+ located just inside the Pisgah National Forest. This houses many diverse plants from the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
They have a bonsai garden, National Native Azalea Collection, A Quilt garden, stream garden, and the list goes on and on.....
Having connections back to Frederick Olmstead, considered to be the Father of American Landscape architecture, and should be reason enough to visit this place.
Tucked away in the mountains, it incorporates several buildings including an education facility, open amphitheater, 10 miles of trails! Indoor AND outdoor exhibits...go figure. They even have Segway tours if you are into that kind of thing... (Hey Carol...bring your folks down here why don't cha?!?!?!?)
The fee, which is a parking fee, is $6, but you can come and go as much as you like in the place until closing which considering how much there is to see and do that would make sense if you wanted to make a day of it.
They even provide a Green Wedding Program that offers elegantly designed green buildings and lush, sustainable landscapes as sites for ceremonies and receptions.
So a great place offering a lot of great things to see and do and a "must see" when in the Asheville area.
We had company in from out of town and since she also likes horticulture, we decided to take a look.
We really had a wonderful time despite the rainy weather. The bonsai collection was very nice and the gardens were all well-tended. The staff were very helpful and made the visit that much more pleasant.
Beautiful grounds. Nice building for hosting events.
Kind of pallid. There's a lot of renovation going on now, so perhaps it is usually more fun. There were no bats in the bat exhibit. Surely they could get some bats if they wanted to.
This is definitely a place to put on your schedule while visiting. Prepare to spend at least an afternoon and some time outdoors. If you are into other outdoor activities, the experimental forest right beside it offers biking, running, fishing, hunting and camping opportunities.
This is a great place to stop if you're visiting the Asheville area and want to spend some time outside but close to town. They have some nice hiking trails, a nice center with gift shop, info etc. and a really cool bonsai exhibit that is one of the coolest things we've seen in a while. Helpful people working there and last time we visited they were building a new center. Lots of learning potential for the kids and a really cool diversion from downtown and the surrounding wilderness (like you really need one, there is a lot of stuff to do around here). Loved it, and we went in early spring right before everything bloomed. Can't imagine what it looks like in June.
i second everything john said!
