We were originally planning on going to Doc Chey's Noodle House only to find out that they are closed on Wednesdays. This was a place my sister had heard about from a friend. This place is very small and pretty crammed. But it has a homey feel. The main server was very friendly and very knowledgable. We really liked him.
Now, onto the food.
I started with sweet tea. Not as good at at Tupelo, but not bad.
Then I got a fried spring roll. Very, very good. And the duck or sweet and sour sauce or whatever the dipping sauce was was very good as well.
For dinner, I got the Beijing Chicken and Shrimp without the shrimp and with wide noodles (linguine). The hoisin sauce was very good, as was the chicken. The peas and carrots were a nice addition, however, there were a lot of them (too many, in my opinion). -

The service at this place was awesome but the food just mediocre. The best thing we had was the veggie tempura special they had posted on the board. The tempura batter was different than I've ever had but it was actually quite good! I had some hoisin shrimp, chicken dish with peas over rice noodles. There was not much flavor at all. I couldn't taste the hoisin hardly at all. Boyfriend ordered the spring soup and it was OK, also. He added some heat and it tasted much, much better. Although he had ordered it spicy to begin with so not sure what the deal was.
We sat outside on a really pretty evening so that part was nice. The inside looked pretty cramped though. I probably wouldn't come back here. Not sure why I was having noodles in Asheville anyway. I should have been eating BBQ.... -

This place could not even have food and it would still get 5 shiny stars for the service and hospitality alone!
We went with a group of 9 to get lunch on a Thursday. The place being fairly small, I was half expecting to be turned away. I had tried to call for a reservation, but they weren't open yet. Instead, I was told that it'd be no problem and we could sit inside or outside. We went inside and before we'd even all sat down we were presented with small samples of three of their appetizers.
They were more than happy to split our check, and even did it by default. Compare this to some other places in town that refuse to even do it.
Now, onto the food. The prices are very reasonable at first glance, and when you see how much food comes out, it gets even more impressive. $6.50 got me a bowl the size of a mixing bowl full of noodle soup with roasted pork. Several at our table got Pad Thai, and it got good reviews, although I hear that it was a little light on the shrimp. All the meals are made to order, so you can get stuff left out if that's a concern (it is for me).
Overall, perfectly good food at incredibly good value prices, and service that should be envied by most other restaurants. I will absolutely be going back numerous times. -

It is my belief that this restaurant stays busy solely based on its real estate. It's great location, right at Pack Square is wonderful. The food, however is not very good. In fact, it is downright bland.
I've visited a few times over the years and found my most recent visit to be the most disappointing of all. The food has definitely declined in quality. As a result, I will probably not return again.
I ordered a vegetable noodle dish. It arrived with about a pound of rice noodles, 4 pieces of cabbage, 4 nubs of broccoli and 4 pieces of tofu. The sauce arrived on the side? and its flavor was bitter rather than inviting. It was one of the most boring dishes I've ever ordered in a restaurant! I ate the veggies (which were buried beneath the giant mound of noodles). The noodles weren't at all flavorful so I packaged them up for my dogs.
My dear husband wasn't very impressed with his meal either. He ordered a spicy eggplant dish (which we both love). Unfortunately, they fried the eggplant into greasy oblivion. It was heavy and slippery going down. I've had much better at other restaurants around town.
I'm giving this place two stars because our server was friendly and the patio seating was great for people watching.
PS - even the fortune cookies are horrible! -

Yum! They have tons of well varied vegetarian options to choose from. The spring rolls are filling and satisfying (also huge!). Surprisingly, the kimchee is not only house made, but vegetarian as well.
If I lived in the area, this would be regular take out for me, I'm sure of it. -

Great location, good service, bland and boring food. Annie Chung or Simply Asia noodle bowls that you can get at the grocery store have more flavor.

I haven't been to Noodle Shop in about 2 years and before that is was about 4 years but the fact that I'm still thinking about this place says it all. I used to live in Asheville and frequented this quaint restaurant located right int he heart of Pack Square.
I'm not sure if they still do it, but they used to serve complimentary julienned carrots that were absolutely delicious. Thinking about them now makes my mouth water. It don't know what they did to them but they were sooooo good.
I love the soups here and they are so big, I never left without a take-home bag.
There is outdoor seating as long as the weather is nice. -

If you are looking for good Asian food, don't come here. Go to Doc Chey's down the street. However...if you are looking for a good noodle bowl with various vegetables and meats with outdoor seating then come here.
The Noodle Shop is a perfectly acceptable Asian restaurant on Pack Square. There isn't much indoor seating so you are better off choosing to go on a day when you can sit outside. I've been here in the winter and it is crammed inside.
They offer several types of noodles to include in your bowl and then basically give you the choice of meats/veggies and then they make it to order.
You can't go wrong here....plus, if you are on a budget then get your food to go. It costs less. -

It filled me up! Ask to sit on the patio, you'll catch a nice breeze and watch a lot of interesting people.
The vegetarian pad thai is okay. It has raw onions and basil (which I am not used to), but the tofu was really good. My husband got the vegetarian hot skillet. It definitely comes out hot and flavorful! All the tables around us had great looking dishes too.
We were just visiting and staying at a hotel downtown so we walked. However, I didn't notice any parking right in front so I think you'll have to find parking on the street and around the corner.
The servers are friendly and they never let your beverage get on the empty side. The portions are large and enough to share if you get an appetizer. Try it, have fun people-watching, and enjoy the noodles. -

Mush, mush, mush. And to add insult to injury the mush even lacked flavor. Interesting that the response from the waitress when I commented on the uninspired food was, "That is not my favorite dish either." Too bad this restaurant does not live up to its great location where a meal could be enjoyed dining outside in the middle of town. The mushy noodles were of course overcooked, but exactly how does one make mushy dumplings? As far as I am concerned, excellent service and great location could never make up for the incredibly bad food.

I LOVE NOODLE SHOP! AAAAAAHHHHHH!
Seriously, every time I go there, the food is prepared with consistency and resembles the Chinese comfort food that I'm accustomed to. The waitstaff is always nice too. Sure, they don't have a kids menu, but you can usually split a dish since the portions are big (not to mention that they have noodle bowls as well). If you come to downtown Asheville, you MUST try this place. -

Meh.... kinda bland. The wait staff was pretty bad, didn't tell us about the specials and didn't explain the menu or offer suggestions. I have a feeling that the better items are the tofu and vegan options... but overall everything was very bland.

I'm addicted to their delicious cheap noodle soup bowls and I absolutely swear that they cure every cold I've ever had.

Nice outdoor sidewalk-side dining, great for a nice evening of people watching.
Options for carnivores & vegetarians alike. I opted for the dan-dan with added tofu. Not too salty, wonderfully fresh veggies & firm tofu. They have green & jasmine hot teas, as well as the obligatory sweet tea.
Didn't do desert, but they did have some options. All in all it was a good dinner. -

Reasonable prices, ok meal, and I'm thinking that I mis-ordered here. I shold have ordered a noodle bowl, but hubby wanted pad thai and I wasn't really hungry. And the server said it was really good. It was fine. Maybe even a Meh. But the service was attentive, the shaded outside seating was pleasant, and the sweet tea kept on coming.

A little pricier than I want to pay for Asian food. I ate there awhile ago, but I remember loving the noodles they had on the menu.

This place is wonderful. The Noodle Shop is the only place I've been too where the noodles actually taste like the ones I've had in Asia. The eggplant entre melts in your mouth!

The Noodle Shop has been recommended by a couple of people but I'm not going back. I was there for lunch today - 7/2010. Other places in the immediate area were packed but my friend and I were the only patrons at this restaurant at noon. Normally, that would've been a sign but perhaps the heat got the best of me (and I was very hungry). It's also often packed at night but now I wonder why.
The waitress and waiter were good but that's the end of the "good." The prices were a bit high but if the food isn't good, any price is too high. My friend had noodle soup with vegetables. The noodles were there in quantity but the vegs. were extremely scanty. I had the five noodle something dish. I'm attempting to salvage the rest now by draining the huge amount of grease off of it. I should've sent it back and skipped lunch but I was with a new friend...
There are so many other good choices in the area and honestly, even if this was the only restaurant nearby I'm not giving it a second chance. The grease just leaves me with such a lingering taste. Uck! Check out this place that's just down the road, I know I will!

Wow I either ordered the wrong thing or all the previous reviewers don't know good food. I ordered the shrimp pad thai and the noodles were almost inedible. The shrimp were very bland as well. The restaurant is very small inside. The best part of the meal was the fortune cookie. How can a place called the Noodle Shop not cook NOODLES properly??? I really don't understand.

Service was mediocre and they pissed me off for taking the party behind us first. Very good meal, very reasonable prices. I had pad thai, which was a little different than I expected, but very good. Marking down a 1/2 star for no kids menu and my daughter would not eat her $6 dumpling app.

My boyfriend and I love this place! I always get the pork dumplings and if they have a dumpling special we try that too! I love spice and the housemade chili oil they put on the table allows me to kick up whatever dish I get. All in all this is just good, fresh food for an incredibly reasonable price and I always have enough for lunch the next day!

If you are looking for a big steaming bowl of Yum, the Noodle Shop is for you. I've tried a wide variety of the Noodle Shop's fare and never had anything that wasn't outstanding. My absolute favorite is the Sweet and Sour chicken potage. My salvatory glands are going into overdrive just thinking about it. Fast friendly service from a family run business. The portions are large and cold leftovers for breakfast the next morning are almost a certainty. Very reasonable prices. The only drawback, may be that the restaurant is small. If the weather is clement, sit outside and watch the world pass by while you slurp your way to Nirvana.

Ok, this place RULES. I got one of the noodle soups with tofu and my friend got the Asheville Noodle soup, and let me just say, MY OH MY! They came in these HUGE bowls that were filled with noodles, vegetables, tofu, all kinds of surprises! The food tasted excellent and we had 2 servers who did an excellent job. It doesn't look like much from the outside (or inside). It's pretty tiny but the food came quick and it was YUMMY! The server was extremely helpful and gave us a better idea of the nightlife around town. I can't wait to go back!!

I didn't enjoy this place much. Don't get the seaweed salad if your used to what typically gets served in Japanese sushi restaurants.

The Noodle Shop has fallen in and out of favor for me over the years (competition with Doc Cheys), but it remains to be my favorite place to dine al fresco, especially on a cool day with hot spring noodle soup and also when the astronomical spray painter guy is out there on the corner even though it seems that there might be a risk for toxic fumes. There is often live music (staged) or buskers in Pack Square which can make or break the aural vibe. Buskers are usually more talented than the crap the city puts on; "Aural Vibe" kind-of explains it, dude. The house appetizers, all versions of pickled things, are excellent and I love the "Silver Potato" one so much that I am likely to order it when I am down on my luck. Nobody seems to know why it's called silver potato, so I guess it's slivered misspelled. By nobody, I mean the awesome servers, many of whom have been there for years. The Spring Rolls and Bao Zi are mandatory, inversions of choice, no, I really can't help myself and must order at least one or the other if I really have to make a decision. Eggplant with Garlic Sauce was my dish for a long time, but now I discovered that Spring Noodle Bowl is yummy as hell, especially after dumping in a few scoops of chili oil. I only wish that they would add more varied veggies to it when you pay that buck-fifty because I'd almost pay that much to leave out zucchini and yellow squash. Menu is extremely vegan friendly, which is what drew me to The Noodle Shop in the first place; it hasn't changed and that's why I continue to return.

This used to be one of my favorite spots in Asheville, but the food has recently gone way downhill. The portions are huge and the prices fair, but the quality is seriously lacking. What used to be balanced taste is now just salt salt salt. After one bad experience, I've given it two more shots, with each incrementally more disappointing. The final straw was a recent visit where my eggplant was all but burnt beyond edibility (I had to chew or cut off most of it - carbon is not so tasty). My girlfriend ordered a pork dish that taste for all the world like mushed olives. I can't recommend Noodle Shop anymore, sadly.
