Pinole, CA
As a person that considers themself a foodie, I feel almost stupid to say that I've never been to this place after 22 years of living in Pinole. Maybe because Pinole has failed me so many times when it's come to food. Maybe because it's in the corner of a strip mall in between a dollar store and a barbershop. I just know that I'm thankful for finally finding this place.
I ordered the turkey pesto sandwich. Perfection in sandwich form? Yes. There was so much delicious pesto spread on my sandwich, yet the sandwich still tasted light and refreshing. I am never going to go to a Subway ever again, now that I know this place exists. Can't wait to try out more of the items on their extensive menu. -

So I finally decided to see what the hype was all about and give this deli a shot. I'm a self proclaimed sandwich addict and could literally eat a sandwich for each meal of the day on a daily basis. That being said I am a bit particular about my sandos.
I was pleasantly surprised and can honestly say that the Turkey Muenster Melt is delicious and easily one of the better sandwiches I've tried in the bay area. Everything from the choice of bread (a toasted sesame roll) to their choice of veggies and addition of sprouts (which were phenomenally fresh) was spot on. Service was attentive, the prices were right, and the following 3 people who ordered after me all order the same turkey muenster melt.
My wife ordered the turkey club and a side split pea soup. The sandwich was tasty and had the addition of 1000 island dressing which really set it off. The split pea soup was divine and the absolute best split pea soup I've ever had.
Overall this place was great and I will absolutely be back for a sandwich in the future. -

Sandwiches...not bad, not bad. A good deli that's open past 6 is kinda hard to find. Thank G for yelp, otherwise I wouldn't have found this place. The hubby and I stopped by and picked up a couple of sandwiches; The Turkey Muenster Melt and the Italian Sub.
Turkey Melt - Pretty good and tasty. It could have used more or thicker slices of turkey but whatever...the flavor was there and it left me satisfied. Melted muenster cheese, 1000 island dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion, lots of sprouts, greek peppers (loved this cuz it gave it a kick) all on a grilled sesame roll. I'm not a fan of sesame but when I get this again, I'd probably order this on a french or sweet roll.
Italian Sub - GOOD! The hubby really enjoyed this. I also took a bite and this sammy was packed with tons of salami, provolone, greek peppers and everything on a sour roll.
They have a good variety of other specialty, vegetarian and traditional sandwiches along with large green salads, which I'd like to try next. The staff was quite friendly and prices are pretty good. Will definitely be back. -

I am a sandwich junkie. I asked the guy behind the counter what is their go to sandwich. The Turkey Munster Melt was right on. A little messy, but what great hot sandwich is not. The salad is huge and the atmosphere is friendly.
Great portion, right price. -

Fantastic food, great value! GIANT sandwich for ~6-7 bucks...
Ordered the Italian sandwich...about a pound of salami, tons of toppings. Half the sandwich would probably have gotten me full, but I just couldn't stop eating it!
Small place, hums with energy...feels family-run. All the employees seem genuinely happy to be there.
I'm not in Pinole often, but will make sure to stop by The New Deli next time that I do! -

Love love love this deli! No other place can compare to this. I always order their Chef (greens, ham & cheese slices, big chunks of tomato, slices of egg & their special thousand island dressing) salad. It's like the perfect sandwich in a salad form.
They're prices aren't too bad, especially for salads considering other places price their salads at $7/$8 and it looks like a side salad instead. Their salads will get you full for sure, plus it comes w/ the side of bread & butter for only 50cents more! -

I LOVE this place. My co-workers and I go there alllllllll the time, twice a week. The sandwiches are a great price, $6-$8. I get their tuna sandwich and their chipotle chicken which is the BEST. You have got to try their cookies and brownies, sooo good!!! Everything is so fresh, and everyone is very nice. You have got to try it !

They've been in Pinole for so many years.. I still don't know why I haven't been here sooner.
The deli is a great place. Homemade / Friendly / Family atmosphere. Made to order.
I get the Turkey Muenster Melt almost every time. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Simply awesome. TRY ONE if you haven't already. -

Who woulda thunk that there was such a great little deli by the dollar store??
Most definitely a reliable lunch spot in Pinole. Pretty much all of their sandwiches and salads are solid. And the staff here is always helpful and smiling.
I usually want me some meat, but love the #8 here. It's saucy, veggie patty yumminess. -
Review from Jason G.
WOW. I don't often give 5 stars or stop what I am doing on a busy work day to write this but WOW. I have nothing bad to say, this place might be perfect. I am picky about my deli's as my NY Pizza so for me to be impressed is a huge compliment.
The sandwiches are all fresh with great bread, the staff is helpful and friendly, and the prices are more than fair. I came here to bring sandwiches for a potential client. We got a mixture of sandwiches : Turkey Muenster Melt, Club, Italian Sub, Chicken Chipotle and all of them were raved about. I had the Italian Sub and I don't even know if I breathed while eating it.
My co-worker and I stated that even if we don't have business in Pinole/San Pablo, its close enough to the freeway that while driving down the 80 we are going to stop here often. You should do the same. -

One of the best deli's I've ever been to! I came here with my friend one day for lunch. We had been in this plaza before to go to Hunan but never really paid this place any attention.
Thank gawd for my fellow yelpers! This place was just 4 minutes from my office, so I knew I could take my time here. We walked in an decided to order a whole salad and a whole sandwich to share. They don't have lunch combos, so we asked to cut the sandwich and divide the salad. They had no problem doing so.
We ordered the turkey pesto sandwich and the caesar salad. The caesar salad was made with homemade caesar dressing...and it wasn't that thick white dressing. It was HOMEMADE AND DELICIOUS! I almost killed my salad before I remembered that I had a sandwich sitting there. That was one of the best salads I've ever had. It even has bits of anchovies...yummay!!! I thought the salad was good, but the lemon square I had for dessert was HEAVEN! The crust was so buttery and just...SO FREAKING GOOD! This is definately one of my favorite Deli's in the area. -

Yummy yummy yummy - I am stuffing the new Waldorf salad in to me right now. Tiny perfect little pieces of toasted honey pecan, tons of them, in fact, almost seems like a full cup of pecan pieces, really. And fresh perfect greens, crispy, tasty, and lots and lots of fresh, ok, the stuff here is fresh, what can I say? crunchy, sweet Fuji apples in perfect little slices, I kid you not. PLUS expensive blue cheese bits plus great poppy seed dressing. And a nice, very nice quality seeded roll with butter on it, too.
Do I sound over the top? Sorry. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT, though. I have never been there, mind you, but somebody in my office has brought back several salads and sandwiches from this place, and they are always excellent. Sublimely good and filling and tasty. I especially recommend the bacon spinach salad with sweet and sour dressing, or whatever it's called. Had that yesterday. They use A LOT OF BACON, folks, and it is good bacon. Oh, and tons, I mean, tons of sesame seeds. -

Turkey Muenster Melt sandwich that I ate today was as good as it gets for me. (for a sandwich)
My husband absolutely loved his as well. He had a BarBQ beef sandwich.
Its very nice to know their hours are extended ..... Now we can stop by after work if there is a craving for a sandwich.

Stopped here on our way back from Marin. So many unique options for sandwiches, which is what i like in a deli. They also have about 15 varieties of vegetarian sandwiches. I tried the grilled tofu with onions and peppers with BBQ sauce. It was delicious. The only problem was that the bread was a little soggy. It made it messy but still great.
My parents were with me and both liked their choices- chipotle chicken and the turkey motz. Their sandwiches were not soggy. I think the water from my grilled peppers and onions were part of the moisture messiness.
I will hopefully be able to stop by here again soon! -

This deli definitely has great sandwiches and a ton of varieties to choose from. I love the club on Dutch Crunch. I'm only knocking it down a star for the small selection of beverages and chips, and the limited amount of seating.

I love mom-n-pop, hole-in-the-all restaurants. I came here for a sammich because I have heard good things... tried it for myself..one word, three letters:: YUM!!!!!! It tasted amazing. Since it was my very first time. I had a simple order: turkey and avocado on white bread with 'the works' {mayo, mustard, tomato, onion--hold the onions for me}. It was scrum-deliumptious. It's definitely one of my go-to sandwich spots. Aannnnddddd, they have good cookies too, so moist and soft, just like cookies ought to be! The only downer is that they close at 3PM!! ;(;(

The menu drew me in. Very impressive sounding sandwiches and salads. The reality was more disappointing. Tiny sandwich for the $ and inattentive staff. All that I can disregard til after a 2nd chance. The 5 trips to the bathroom after eating there is not. I was a little weirded out by seeing a book of psalms in the bathroom. Now I know why it's there.

I didn't expect too much as I had never heard of this deli until today when I needed an impromptu sandwich for my picnic in Orinda before the play at Cal Shakes. My best sandwich memories hail from my college days at CAL. The New Deli packed my tuna sandwich with love on wheat bread and they used a honey tasting wheat bread that brought back those fond memories of that elusive sandwich...
Every bite of my perfectly-made sandwich had a bite of their "works" which consist of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayo, and mustard. The "works" were spread evenly in the sandwich and it wasn't too bulky to put in my mouth either. The juices of the tuna and the "works" melted together like a symphony in my mouth. I have to give kudos to the female owner of this establishment who made my sandwich because if sandwich-making was an art then she is a true artist. My partner enjoyed his chicken salad on sesame roll (today's special) as well. Thanks for the memories and the delicious sandwich too! : ) -

What I love about this place is its fresh ingredients, friendly staff, and delicious food! My favorite was recommended by a young woman who works here. The turkey muenster melt is absolutely delicious!! Their caesar salad is amazing and I love that they actually use anchovies where most other places wouldn't. The "bread & butter" addition to the salad is yummy too! Now I can't wait to go back again!

Good thing their website includes the menu. Otherwise I'd hold up the line. So I got a couple sandwiches and a salad to go. I had the reuben on rye with thousand island - melty lovely.. mmm goodness. I bet if I ate there you might see cartoon hearts come out of my ears. The salad was a beast! I still shoveled a good amount of it. I had the Waldorf..."fancy huh". Mixed greens, toasted pecans, apples, goat cheese (mild and creamy) with an oil based poppyseed dressing. I'ma take a shot of that later.

One word...YUMM!! this place was a cute little shop with about 5 or 6 tables. The food is so great and it gets a little cramped around lunch, so I hope they expand. I forget the names of my sandwiches but the roast beef with lemon caper was a little too much for me. The lemon was too overpowering and the roast beef was okay. The other sandwich was the turkey munster melt--HENCE THE YUM!! perfect combo! Also the onion soup is a must try

My wife and I ate hear a while back and I will admit the place was alright, I cant really remember how good my sandwich was mainly because it was just a sandwich similar to the one I make at home. It was busy there for that little place, We also had our daughter with us who was 1 at the time, Luckily they had a child seat for us, it wasn't the average child seat you find at restaurants, it was an old high chair that could have been maybe the owners child at one time. All in all this place wasnt for me but I know people like it so try it for your self.

I stumbled upon this place when researching where to have lunch after my appointment at school. I wasn't even really up to going here, but I accidentally found it while meandering around old town Pinole. Guess it was meant to be!
I told myself, "I'm getting salad. I'm getting salad." After seeing all the slabs of roast beef, pastrami, salami, and other meats on the deli counter, I was saying, "I'm getting.....sssssaaaallll....nevermind" haha Actually, I stuck to my guns and got a salad anyways.
It was fun watching the whole staff behind this open counter making food like busy bees. It had this family style feel like you were watching members of your family cooking in the kitchen of your home. I loved that feeling.
My spinach salad was pretty good despite a few wilty leaves. The hard boiled egg, sesame seeds, and bacon crumbles made for the perfect condiments alongside the homemade sweet and sour dressing. It also came with a buttered piece of multigrain bread that was super good.
Overall, a pretty good lunch. I would definitely to go back to try their scrumptious looking sandwiches. -

We still are in love with this place!
Hubby and son usually get the #8 which is a veggie patty with BBQ sauce.
I try to mix it up and get different veggie sandwiches. I think I've
tried them all. I just had the veggie Reuben sandwich---yumm!
Most of the menu is for omnivores but there are MANY vegetarian
choices.
Hours are limited. M-F 9-3 and Saturday 11-2.
Lot of take out orders. Salads are a top seller.
We have eaten here at least 50 times in the last 12 or so years.
We originally found out about this place through a review in the West County Times .Listed in: Please don't forsake them, oh…, Non-chain chain chain of…, San Pablo Avenue is a long,…, There will be RIots and…, BREAKFAST-To Eat or Not to Eat…

Mom & pop deli with a large menu, had lunch there everyday of the week but stopped after we found a bug in a salad, when we called the deli to complain the owner (cashier) was rude and dismissive something along the line of "what you want credit now?". I am not excusing the bug but that had never happened to me, but what did it was that when i called the owner was rude and that's why they don't have my business anymore.
Not related to this critique his wife is the soul of the place but i think he is really mean to her too. -

The new(?) sign in front of The New Deli promotes "Soups, salads, and vegetarian food," nothing to do with sandwiches as a business with the name "deli," would suggest. This almost made me turn around since I was really looking forward to something tasty between two slices of bread (or a roll.) I'm glad that I ventured forth because the Italian Sub that I got from here was delicious! Exactly what you would want, nice meat, lovely cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato with plenty of Italian dressing.
The only confusing part (other then the misleading sign out front) were the people milling about the cash register unsure of when to pay for their food. -

Great salads, great people. How this ended up in Pinole is still a mystery to me. They're doing well here, but they would have more business in Berkeley or San Francisco where more health concerned folks actually look for grub like this.
They've been around for years and I would walk over to their place for snacks right after Aikido classes which has to be over 15 years ago. Non-traditional and updated traditional salads and sandwiches. Great family-oriented business. -

After many years of intending to go to this place, we finally made it! Albeit, we got there minutes before they closed. We would gone there sooner if they had more extended hours. I am glad that we did. This place has excellent, freshly prepared, modern deli cuisine.
The soup was excellent, as were the sandwiches. You can tell that they are homemade and not delivered by Sysco or one of those other vile restaurants that so many places use these days.
I even bought their cookbook, which is very nicely made.
My vegetarian partner gives it a big thumb's up, as there are so very many choices. In fact, I think there may be more vegetarian selections than carnivorous ones!
The wife is extremely pleasant to talk to, and really made us want to come back. The husband isn't rude, but he sure isn't going to win any personality awards any time soon!
Try it, you'll like it! -

I have been going to "the new deli" ever since 1996, the 4th grade. Tom and Jennifer have always been and always will be warm and kind hearted people.[I remember making fresh apple juice in their kitchen and eating fresh berries from their garden :)] There's a real sense of family when you walk into their deli which shouldn't surprise you if you get to know them personally.
Anyway on to the food. "the new deli" offers the freshest food out there. I enjoy their Chicken Caesar Salad with a nice banana berry shake. I mean come on, they MAKE their own croutons [which are extra crunchy!] They also offer a pretty large vegetarian menu which is great for the vegans out there. The pin-wheel sandwich is also great there.
If you're looking for a hidden GEM, head into the del monte plaza and treat yourself to one of the best family delis in the bay area :D -

Great sandwiches. I absolutely recommend the "Special Roastbeef" sandwich. The lemon caper sauce and horseradish mayo is the perfect combination on this sandwich. I've tried their reuben sandwich & it was pretty good but it was a lot of meat and cheese for me personally. Their soups of the day are tasty. Their chicken caesar is good and it comes with bread.
The only reason why I'm giving 2 stars is because every single time I walk in there, none of the employees come off as friendly. No eye contact, no greeting, no customer acknowledgment at all until after about 5-7 minutes of waiting and staring at them talking to each other or the husband and wife owners bickering over who was supposed to slice the meat.
Great mom and pop shop but it would be nice if they improved their customer service/people skills. -

GREAT sandwiches. Even with the good reviews I was a little hesitant after I entered the interior. It is probably the designer in me, but for such great sandwiches, they should have a beautiful, inviting space, not generic, ho-hum decor. This place is special, it should LOOK special.

Oh my gosh!!!! The potato swiss soup is "OUT OF THIS WORLD"! This is the best I have EVER had from any restaurant! I also love the pasta salad with the sun dried tomatoes. Yum! As far as the sandwich goes, I have only ever had the eggplant one, which is FANTASTIC! I love eggplant! Not alot of restaurants have eggplant sandwiches. The owner is the sweetest! I bought her cookbook too! Thank goodness she has the recipes to everything I love from here. Great place! Hope you enjoy it as much as me!

Pinole, CA
A good little deli, great place for lunch. The staff was super friendly. There is often alot of patrons, but some how they still get you through in a timely manner. The place is a bit trendy for the kind of Deli I normally would groove on, but the food is good and the friendly staff definitely make it memorable. The prices are high, but they dont really have any competition in the area.
