Just moved here from Chicago and arrived pretty late. We decided to go out and get a quick bite. Where did we end up, The New Brown Jug. I was more than a little hesitant when I walked in at 10:00pm at night to grab a bite with my husband. It is not in the best area, dark inside, and everyone turned to look at us when we walked in. Except no one said a word. So we roamed around for a couple minutes till a waitress finally approached us.
Note: This is definately a NO Frills place. Here was my immediate facebook post:
Just walked into a somewhat shady looking pizza joint. We asked what was faster to make pizza or a calzone, our waitress answered "beer". John asked for an ice tea, our waitress smiled and said "long island ice tea right?" They don't have.... ice tea. There are no non-alcoholic drinks on the menu and only one size pizzas. A pizza and a pitcher of beer $14!
Well ... I must say after we relaxed got our alcoholic drinks and filled our hungry bellies with their pizza. I am a HUGE fan! The pizza was thin, crisp, and very delicious. We were both surprisely and happily impressed. Our waitress was actually quite nice with a bit of New England sarcasm and service was great once we sat down.
I have since just ordered delivery and skipped going in, but I am a huge fan of the pizza and the calzones are great! Definately on my go to place for great pizza!
It's a treacherous walk through traffic to get here but it gets four stars because I like:
Cheap pizza and beer combos...and ~$14 for a pitcher and cheese pie sounds good to me...note: apparently you can only get one of these deals per table...
They also do buckets of 4 Sam for $15....not too bad a price...I think they do cheaper buckets for other domestics as well...
BEST PIZZA IN MA!
I don't like the Bar, the clientale, the location - but if I can give this place 6 stars I would because the pizza is that GOOD. My mouth is actually watering right now thinking about the pizza there. When I go I usually buy an extra pizza so I can eat it the next day too. I can't say enough about the pizza there.
As other reviews stated definetly a dive bar...a place I wouldnt dare enter...but for a great slice of pizza...in I went.
I ordered the vegetarian thin crust based on the thin cruste reviews. Eggplant, Olives, Broccoli, Onions, Green Peppers was the toppings.
I love eggplant...it was the breaded kinda. Broccoli is a must on any veggie pizza...this broccoli was shredded??? kinda like the crumbs at the bottom of a bag of frozen broccoli. Not what I was looking for but ok.
So the veggies arent fresh and the toppings were not very well disbursed. It could have been a little more crispy for a thin crust. Pizzas are $12.50 but there is a $15 minimum dilivery. Nothing else on the menu but pizza and calzones.
Overall I think it was an "OK" pizza...would I go again?? I doubt it.
One of the best greasy spoon-dive bar combos around Boston. I end up here often in the summer because I play baseball at Chelsea High semi regularly. Maybe I'm biased because the post-industrial decay of Chelsea inspires a perverse longing for the city of my formative years; New Bedford.
They make a delicious thin crust pizza that is hella cheap. I believe its something like $8 for a pitcher of domestic and a cheese pizza. After destroying a team full of Uncle Ricos there isn't much better to wash away the taste of victory.
Great place for cheap but yummy pizza and drinks.
Don't be put off by the sketchy exterior or cheesy interior.
My tradition is to go get a pizza here before seeing a movie in Revere. The Jug looks unbelievably seedy from the outside-brown building with barely any windows and one large steel door. The inside though has a really nice homey feeling. Perhaps not the cleanest-but what do you expect with the price? The pizza is absolutely delicious-I am a girl who appreciates thin crust with lots of veggies! I did not like the ricotta, meat special-ricotta? on pizza? nono. They have a surprisingly large drink list but the real thing to do here is buy the beer pitcher. The waitstaff is amazing!! It is a really cheap, laid back place to grab a beer and pizza. Plus walking through the door is still an adrenalin rush. Cash only!
Okay, so I really didn't even want to go inside when I first heard about this place. There are bars on the limited windows and it just looks really run down. However, everyone in our waterfront hood was raving about this pizza so inside I ventured.
I will not eat pizza from anywhere else ever again! They have, hands down, the best pizza. Sometimes I ask for extra sauce because it can be a little dry for me, but even dry (by my standards) it's still SO good.
One of the most respectable Cheese pizzas in the city and beyond. An amalgamation of thin, crispy crust, marinara sauce, blended cheeses. They offer filling calzones too but, the pizza is where it's at. Last I was in there (years & years ago) the interior was really run down, and a lot of the clientele looked like they hadn't seen a good day in years. Sorta like Santarpios in East Boston, but with a darker interior. I'm a little too "refined" for re-entry. So, I get delivery. Cash only.
I'm not sure if the New Brown Jug received a limited edition shipment of Coors Light's, but they were simply outstanding, and cheap, $2.95 a bottle, or $2 a pint. The clientel were friendly and fans of acid washed jeans, man-pris, and flip flops. While our crew certainly didn't fit in, we were accepted nonetheless. We were given a free Guiness and a quick peep show of some man's junk. I can't explain either, but having not seen the junk, I rate the New Brown Jug a 4 out of 5. Had I not felt like I was the kid in the corner of the final seen of the Blair Witch Project when I tested out the restroom, I would have awarded it a perfect 5 out of 5.
This is the Oldest Pizza Place around, that I know.
They haven't changed a thing. The booth's are the old fashioned wood high backs, very rustic.
You get paper plates and forks, knives.
You can get the Special which is a Cheese Pizza and Pitcher of beer.
They also serve Calzones that are scumptious.
We get one of each but that's it for the Menu.
Pizza and Calzone. Very reasonably priced.
We Love the Jug. :-}
I have to agree with Francine here. This is the best thin crust pizza there is. Its right off of Route 1 north (over the tobin bridge) if you are curious! Highly recommended for pizza, although the atmosphere is a bit sketch.
One of the best pizza places around. Totally sketch, especially from the outside but the pizza/pitcher combo can't be beat and if you are truly scurred just do take out... this pizza is to die for.
I have to say it: the Brown Jug is BETTER than Santarpio's. If Santarpio's lost the attitude they would be on the same level as the Brown Jug, plus all the Bridge and Tunnel arseholes from Newton and Brookline are too scared to come into Chelsea, so you will get a bunch of locals and regulars here. Great to just sit in here eating pizza and drinking beer with a couple of friends. Don't be afraid of the ambiance - it is what we call local color.
Typical Hole in the Wall Bar/Pizza Restaurant. Nothing fancy about it, but their Cheese Pizza and a Pitcher of Beer for like 12.95 can not be beat. Their thin crust pizza is fantastic, nothing better. They have at least 10 different types of calzones, all fantastic. They do not take credit cards, however. They also have delivery to Chelsea and Revere.
