I love this place. Its right on the water and has an amazing deck with outdoor seating. It has a really old world style to it and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time to a place where a summer vacation on Block Island with your family was enough to make you happy. My mother, her boyfriend and my best friend sailed there and stayed in the "bowl" moored in front of The Oar (check THAT review too). We had a cab pick us up as soon as we could and told him to take us to a patio on the water where we could have some drinks and grab a bite. He took us directly to The National. There was a two man band there... one singing and playing guitar and the other playing the bongo. We were seated right away and greeted by a young kid clearly spending his summers on BI making money off the seasonal visitors. He was good. We got some drinks and ate some delish calamari and split a seasonal salad. The drinks were big and strong and the atmosphere was so relaxing it was hard not to feel like I was thousands of miles from Boston on a remote island somewhere. We went to National for dinner the next night too. I had mussels that were divine and a wedge salad that hit the spot.and to be honest.. .i forget what my friend ordered. We moved into the inside bar to give up our patio table to the line that was forming and had a couple pops in there too. The bartenders were fun and we ended up hanging out with the guys in the band who later showed us the two bars in Block Island.. yes... two... but they are a great time! Block Island is phucking awesome and anyone who travels there should not miss The National.
I agree with the other 2 reviews. Clam chowder, calamari, and fish and chips were delicious. PRICEY though.
Fabulous view from the deck. Drinks were large and delicious. I recommend the "goomba splash". Calamari was some of the best (and I have sampled many different kinds). Staff was pleasant, friendly and efficient. Burger was also very good.
