I thought this place was cute. It's a diner, so expect diner-food. But also expect diner prices! Everything was very affordable, and it's nice to see a place where pancakes don't cost $10.
The big highlight of this place is that it caters to kids. A TV in the corner was playing Road Runner cartoons (on mute), and there's a kid's section full of toys. There's even a designated place to park a stroller while you're there. And the restaurant seems to organize a lot of events for local families.
You order and pay at the counter in the back, and the server brings your food over. I played foosball with a friend while I waited, and watched the cute kids tumble around. Bill was under $6. Not a bad brunch.

I LOVE this place. The food is great, and low priced. I love the pasta. Granted, the food can be a bit on the bland side, but the low prices make up for it. It's a great place for families to go to. They have movie nights on fridays, and their upstairs is nice for kiddies to play with the toys they have and crayons and markers and such. Great place for kids!
Ryan and I went in the other night after visiting the apartment building we're going to be moving into in August. We spotted The Moxie Spot from across the street, thought it looked like fun and we were too hungry to walk to the place we had originally planned on going to. It was around 6 or 7, so the place was mostly empty. Besides us, there was just a family with 2 kids and to be honest, the father bothered me a lot more than they did. Don't you love when the parent yelling at the kid is a lot more obnoxious than whatever the kid did to get yelled at?
I have to admit, I was extremely put off by having to walk to the back to order and pay. I go to diners because they're restaurants that I can sit down in and be served without having to pay a lot. At least Moxie Spot has diner prices, although their pricing is bizarre... same price for a sandwich as a large plate of penne a la vodka? I don't know. I was happy to read their menu and see that they use organic ingredients when it's possible. I've heard some bad things about their portion sizes, but my BLT was more than enough food (cut into 4 triangles) and my boyfriend's Cuban panini was quite large. Between those and the yummy cheese fries, we left very full.
The decor is a little over the top, but while they have a lot of the stuff on the walls, it's not as bad as TGIFridays. They have an area for kids with a chalkboard and there are children's books all over, but the food was good and as long as it's not really packed, I would definitely return (especially because I will be living basically across the street). I will probably be getting take out, though.

From the get-go you know this place is tolerant of the kiddos -- there are three doors built into the the entry of moxie spot. Grownup, kid and doll sized. The decor and installations are pretty amazing, and fun to watch weather you are a grown up or not. Speaking tubes connect the different floors, and there is a time-out room downstairs for kids who get overstimulated by all the visual input. I went a few days after it opened, wasn't too hungry -- went for the organic salad bar and the veggie burger. Yum.
Just in case it isn't obvious...if you don't want to be around children, or deal with a child focused menu, this place isn't for you.

I write this as a warning to anyone who may see The Moxie Spot, act on a whim of curiosity, and venture inside to see what the place is all about.
If and when you find yourself in this situation, I have some advice: Unless you're five years old or younger, RUN AWAY.
I speak, friends, from experience, because even though this place openly bills itself as a kids' joint, and even though I had to shake a couple of toddlers off my leg as I studied the menu, I was full of hope for the Atlantic Avenue newcomer.
It could have been a sleeper! The food might've rocked my world!
No. And no.
The portions? Tiny. I finished my bland omelet in two bites. My friend and I laughed at the little plates our entree-ettes were served on. We considered the possibility that we were being punked. We left hungry and angry, and had it not been for the little plastic dinosaur that an adorable two-foot customer threw at me on our way out, the meal would've been a total bust.
You're forewarned. I wish I had been.

The two best things about Moxie is the front door and the menu. The front door has three sizes one within another you can open which is just great fun for kids and has a Alice and Wonderland feel to it. The menu has all the classic foods you loved as a kid and an adult. They have everything from grilled cheese, pulled pork, chicken parm, fish and chips, to hamburgers and hot dogs.
The two worst things are the prices and the food itself. For example the classic grilled cheese sounds alright at $3.25 but what you get is two pieces of wonder bread with the crust cut off and a piece of cheese in the middle. Very small, very basic and the mark up to $3.25 is sad. All the items on the menu are mediocre at best and I probably wouldn't make it back here unless I was with a family with kids.
In terms of a kid place I think they fall a little short here too. They have the cool door in front and some pipes and fittings for kids to play with in the entrance, they also have a chalk board and a fuseball table upstairs but thats it. I don't have kids but I think the decor doesn't really say children's place and there isn't enough fun things for the kids to do. But they save themselves by holding tons of kid events here for the whole family.
So if you have little ones under 10 or so then check the place out, you just might love it. But if you don't have children move on to a better place in the Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill area for some food.
i admit, haven't eaten here yet. But I worked on the construction drawings to design this space architecturally! Don't you love those doors... I give it 3 stars just for my experience of working on designing this space. I didn't love it or hate it, and it wasn't THAT fun to work on; it's a really unique design and that definitely made it not boring at all. But it was my first job i got to work on that actually got built, so it holds a special place in my heart. A so-so/"A-OK" special place that deserves 3 stars.
If I'm out on Atlantic, I'll try and stop by.

I have no idea who Krissy G is, but she's completely wrong about Moxie Spot. The food is great, I've eaten there with my kids a bunch of times and always been pleased. Their fish specials, for instance, are fresh, healthy and perfectly spiced and cooked. It may feel a bit like eating at a friend's house with the kids underfoot, but this is a very welcome addition to the Brooklyn restaurant scene.
