10 reviews for The Mood
I don't get the poor reviews in here. Sure, the lingerie is ugly and cheesy, but if you're looking for classy non-porno style lingerie what in the hell are you doing in a damn adult toy store? Go to Victoria's Secret for that shit man.
What this place is REALLY all about- and why it's AWESOME- is the toy selection for women. The women who work here have, in my experience, always been very friendly, knowledgeable and willing to help you find something that'll satisfy. If you want to see a toy at work, just ask and someone will find batteries so you can take a gander at it. There's a nice sale section w/ 50% off but the regular selection is reasonably priced as well. They also have more top of the line things if you're willing to drop the cash and there's a nice $60 toy I've got my eye on for next time...
Also, maybe if you're lucky you too will glimpse a couple's feet while they're getting frisky in the dressing room, providing some nice inspiration and getting you in the Mood on your trip back home with your new toys!
Every now and then you'll find the mood having some kind of porn star signing autographs. I learned the day I was there I missed Jenna Haze by half an hour.. Damn Traffic. Good selection of things to get you and your partner in the mood. Candles, body paints, feather dusters, toys, video, skimpy garments, all of which are a tad expensive, but other than buying things off the internet, reasonable in nature.
After all this gift-buying for others, I decided it was high time to start receiving. Unlike other stores with similar merchandise, this shop doesn't come off as cheesy or give me the creeps (guy in the blue coat watching every woman in the store the other night notwithstanding). Similar items are displayed in sections, and the layout seems to go from most-innocent up front to least-innocent in the back. The staff is helpful, matter-of-fact and very knowledgeable about the products and how they compare. I wonder if they have an employee discount?
This is the closest to the Babeland NYC (see: http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) or Babeland Seattle (see: http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) experience you can get in Philly. This store attempts to do too much and doesn't succeed, IMO. As Kelly S. said, "the lingerie is cheap and ugly" -- I concur.
Otherwise, its a more classier and upscale retail experience for its specific niche for the South Street area compared to it's competitors. Sample "bar" is in the back of the store.
pix laters...
Yeah, I'm not sure why these reviews are so low... One thing to keep in mind, most adult stores are cheesy - some are better than others. The toys from what I can tell are first class - they even carry hand blown glass dongs. They have an amazing selection of lube and a variety of male and female toys meant to stimulate, titillate, and accentuate your sexual activities. There are also a bunch of novelty items for Bachelorette parties, body paints in a small assortment of flavors, and some interesting sex inspired board games. Oh and whatever penis or boob pasta you may want - they have a decent assortment! If you're even a tiny bit prudish, I'd recommend staying away from the back where they keep the DVDs. They're not censored and you never know what cover will be greeting your line of sight...
The clothes in The Mood are skimpier and chintzier than those at E-Zone, across the street. But that's not the point. This store is less geared toward professional exotic dancers and more geared toward couples looking to spice up their sex lives with 'novelty' toys and videos, sensual candles, flavored condoms. It's not my thing, but everybody needs a little sexy.
The cool thing is it isn't seedy like a porn shop or tacky like condom kingdom (which is apparently for sailors).
When the bonefish are biting, a lot of Philadelphians end up here. What people fail to realize (perhaps) is that Condom Kingdom and The Mood are of the same ownership, so those vastly different aesthetics aren't out of competition, but intended.
People here, which include some friends, are helpful and discreet about whatever questions you could possibly think up. Much better for your in and out mode, rather than to bask in the glory of sex accessory shopping - which other locations closeby seem good for.
The Mood attempts to be classier than the other lingerie/sex shops on South Street, so the decor is better and less seedy. However, the lingerie is cheap and ugly. The sex games, chocolate body paints, etc. are okay, I guess, if you're into that thing. The videos are disgusting. I was nearly blinded by the cover of one of the movies when I was walking past that aisle - seriously, think of the grossest thing you can imagine sexually, and that was the photo on the cover, facing the aisle where unsuspecting shoppers will have that image seared into their brains as they walk by on their way to the less kinky section of the store. I so never needed to see something like that in my lifetime. Anyway, I'd never buy anything from here, but I'm not judging people who like it. I just like my lingerie to fit and to be made of quality material.
Alright...so they had some cute costumes...and interesting toys...but it just all seemed very...I dunno cheap. I personally am not one to buy something labeled one size fits most. I like to stick with quality lingerie...I'll go to Passional on Bainbridge...and as for the novelty items...they are what they are...but I agree with Caitlin C. go to Condom Kingdom they have a better selection...even though the crowd there is questionable.
Cool window displays. But random selection of goods, in a open airy environment (never good when shopping for embarrassing things). If you are trying to get cute lingerie, why are you on South Street? If you are looking for funny gifts, go to Condom Kingdom. And if you need a whip, it's Armed & Dangerous on South 4th St.
