I used to live down the street from this place so I've been here a few times.... I'm glad I read some of the other reviews because I was starting to feel like the service staff was racist! I mean, every time I've gone in there I've gotten HORRIBLE service.  I once saw a table of 6 get their orders before me and my one friend even though they came in at least 10 minutes after us. The food is good if you're looking for something less greasy than your regular greasy breakfast joint. I liked the pancakes best! One thing I also liked about it is not coming out super stuffed and feeling like sleeping for the rest of the day (or running to the crapper). Food is semi-healthy and pretty darn tasty at the same time! Just need better service!!!

We went to breakfast/lunch the morning of our wedding in September 2007 - the food was wonderful!  The highlight was definitely the rosemary potatoes - my husband is still talking about them.

The parking and the service, however, stunk.  Coming from Arizona?  Just walk.  Parking will be easier to find.  We also waited F.O.R.E.V.E.R.  Not just to be seated, but for drinks, to order, for our food, etc.  We were on a schedule, people!  I wasn't all that anxious about the wedding, but I had a massage appointment to get to! (priorities)

I wish I could remember what I ordered, but I ordered it modified to be egg-less and vegetarian, and those potatoes were good.

I would go back to Mission, but I would go with more time to spend, and maybe on a weekday.

Those potatoes were SO GOOD.

Pretty PANCAKES! And they're darned delicious too.

This place is always so durn packed. One morning I went at the butt crack of dawn (just kidding, at 9am), parked like a mile away and walked, hoping I wouldn't have to wait in a gigantic line. I was in luck, b/c we were seated pretty fast.

Mmmm...light and fluffy pancakes make the best breakfast, comforting and satisfying. And it's not one of those ugly pancake stacks like you get at IHOP and Denny's, nope! A stack of 3 fluffy pancakes sprinkled with powdered sugar, adorned with a strawberry and a little butter, comes on a white plate, with the plate edges decorated with swizzled blueberry puree that you can use in place of syrup.

I can never finish those pancakes, regardless of how heavenly they may be. I'm seriously considering sharing this next time around. If you get a stack of pancakes, (let's say, banana blueberry with a side of rosemary potatoes and eggs), get ready for a gargantuan meal and bring your gargantuan appetite.

Prices are pretty reasonable also. $10 for pancakes and a cup of juice/coffee.

Open 7am-3pm.

Maybe I've been spoiled after living in Berkeley / San Francisco during my formative years and having wonderful breakfast spots like The Pork Store and Squat and Gobble a stone's throw away, but this place was NOT fantastic, and definitely not worthy of all the hype I've heard surrounding it.

We came close to closing time on a Sunday so we didn't see any remnants of the long lines people spoke of and were seated right away.  My first impression was that the inside looks like a run-down, dilapidated diner complete with torn vinyl booths - if this is what people consider charming in San Diego, then... yikes!  Our server was a little short with us from the get go, and when I asked her if the Rancheros Verde was similar to / the same as Huevos Rancheros, she gave me a blank look as if I was speaking a different language.  Well, it ended up not being similar, and even if I'd never tasted the sweet runny egg over tortilla of Huevos Rancheros, the Rancheros Verde was mediocre at best, drenched in a green salsa that tasted straight out of the bottle from Costco.  My girlfriend ordered the Rosemary Potatos which, although being a huge portion, wasn't especially good either.  There was something off about the scrambled eggs too, that I can't put my finger on.  The one saving grace was the delicious blueberry pancake I ordered, which we both split and polished off without a problem.

I'll say it again - Not fantastic.  Maybe I'll try the one in East Village next time and see if my opinion changes...

Craving their sweet tamal, I went with my friend to the Mission for breakfast right after I landed in SD. At 9am Saturday morning, the wait was 20 minutes which was fine since my friend spent that same amount of time circling for parking.

My friend ordered the rancheros verde which was okay. I was disappointed that the tamales in my plato verde con huevos were not soft and moist.

Not too satisfied by the Latino breakfast plates, we decided to order the blackberry pancake since the little boy sitting next to us, who was licking the last of the syrup off of his plate, looked like he enjoyed it. The pancake was fantastic! I'd give the Mission 5 stars if that was all I tried.

OUTRAGEOUSLY OVERRATED!

I can't believe people wait in those lines for this place. I've lived in MB for 5 years now and have giving this place a few tries, but have been disappointed every time.

Try the Olive Cafe or the Eggery.

Expensive, sub-par service, sub-par food, and really limited menu (one of my biggest issues with breakfast places).

This place gets 4 stars from me for one thing and one thing only...the strawberry granola pancakes! I have had other things off the menu that were typical- bland and boring, but sweet jesus those pancakes are fantastic...I have no shame in eating all three-even with them being as big as the plate there served on. The only thing wrong with this breakfast is that it says its served with fresh fruit, which consist of a segment of orange, a piece of apple as big as your front tooth and no shit-HALF a grape...

The food and cute barista sway heavily from my wanting to give it a 3 star review. Last friday when I popped in for breakfast with a friend in the morning, the hostess offered us a dirty table which was being cleaned and right by the door... but there were plenty of other empty tables to choose from, that was strange to me.

My friend couldnt decide what she wanted,  so she came back a few minutes later. Which was a bummer because the people who were seated at the same time as us and sat right next to us got their food before we even ordered. Which was fun because they had to keep reaching to our table for salt/pepper and sugar. They had no condiments on their table for some reason. (A group of 4 who sat down considerably after we got their got their food a few minutes after we got ours... that was silly to me as well)

I really love their french toast, it has a berry puree on the sides which is yummy to dip it in to. And I am not even a french toast person! My friend got the apple sausage something something. She liked it. Their rosemary potatoes are so crispy and fresh, and have a really good flavor that will keep you eating past the food baby and you will finish them off for sure.

I love it... By far one of my favorite San Diego breakfast spots.  The breakfast burrito is sooooo good!

Minus one star for the wait... but, if they were quicker then I wouldn't expect them to be as good as they are.

Every plate I have had has been delicious. Make sure you get there early!

So if you're out walking about MB and want breakfast, this is a pretty decent place to stop in....don't even think about trying to find parking, I think I spent more on the gas I used driving around once than I did on my frickin' breakfast, and I drive a little Mazda....

Sorry, I digress....as far as the food goes, the Urban Assault breakfast is a nice small meal, the French Toast is divine, and I've been told the apple chicken sausage is quite yummy.

My major problem with this place, other than the parking, is the coffee stand inside....the baristas didn't really seem to know what they were doing, and wouldn't let me get my drink in a cup for there even though I explained I was eating there and was waiting for a table....so he wasted a stupid disposable cup, and the drink was a crappy waste of 4 and a half dollars....ugh.....

Pancake geeks take notice: My dining companion noticed a curious thing the first time we went to Mission. A diner at the table next to us ate only the center of her pancakes.

Our own pancake analysis yielded an interesting observation: The center of Mission's pancakes have a superior texture, one that is at once fluffy and moist. But the outside inch is curiously dry in comparison, and some diners only dig into the centers. Maybe this could be their new slogan:

Mission Cafe pancakes leave a big O on your plate.

I've gone to Mission Cafe on the early side for breakfast, too chicken to deal with the hideously long lines that develop by mid-morning on weekends. But I find the Chino-Latino lunch menu items (available after 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 1:30 p.m. on weekends) so utterly enticing that I'm going to have to cave really soon and stop by for lunch.

A good place for brunch in terms of the atmosphere, but the food was ok.  The scramble eggs unfortunately seemed mass-made in the way they are at a cheap hotel brunch.  And the potatoes were burnt (not simply crispy).

First off unless you plan to come by bicycle or motorcycle, parking will do nothing more than put you in pissy mood...this is not a good way to start your morning when hungry. Next pray to the gods that there is no wait, but of course there will be. By this time you will be ready to eat the small child waiting with parents rather than wait for your table.

I visited just this past weekend to walk about 15 mins there (F'in parking), then wait about 45 mins for a table. In the meantime i decided to grab some coffee to kill the hunger. I go up and order a "large latte with 4 shots". The barista then asks if that was a caffe latte.. I am like WTF??? So as i watch him i soon get back a urine warm latte with 2 shots in a medium cup. So i ask "hey is this your large size?" he said yes, then I asked "does this have 4 shots?" he said yes. I watched him only do 2 shots and my friend who ordered a large coffee got a "large cup"...so I asked him what size this was (pointing to my friends cup) only for him to respond saying that is the large size for coffee. Later after bitching about it for 5 mins my friend pointed out the "Barista Wanted" sign out front.
At one time this was my favorite breakfast place in S.D. but of course like all good things they usually come to an end. The place itself is great. they have a very nice decor with local art and some style. Problem is this place is very small and crowded....which explains the long waits.

Now onto the most important part, the food. The Mission used to be know throughout the city for its pancakes. Now they are very similar but wayyyyy smaller. On a positive side though the Mission Croissant is the best thing on the menu. I also love the cornmeal pancakes.

I ran 16 miles, others in the group did more or less, but one thing for sure, we were all hungry by the time we got to the Mission.

We were seated pretty quickly for a Saturday at noon time.  I was still interested in breakfast food and tried to order the French toast, but they were out, so I tried the Zen breakfast with braised tofu.  The braised tofu is excellent, the sauce they cook it with is loaded with different flavors.  It also comes with an array of veggies, egg whites, and even some mushrooms.

To make up for the lack of sweet kid stuff, I also had a cinnamon roll, which they said they were out of, but then they brought one out that was fresh from the oven later.  That was some really good luck because that cinnamon roll was excellent.  Just out of the oven, warm and good.

I also had a small mocha and a glass of OJ.  The small mocha was not all that chocolaty, which is bad I think, but I could taste some strong espresso, so it was still ok.  I hate it when a mocha not only does not taste like chocolate, but you cannot even find the espresso, but this one woke me up with some espresso goodness.

The service was great.  They said they were out of cinnamon rolls, but the waitress remembered us when they came out of the oven and brought one over, that is good service.  It was busy, yet I still felt cared for.

I want to go back soon and try some of the other none breakfast dishes.

Umm....yuuuuuuum. Please take notice of the 4 & 5 star reviews coming out of San Diego. Damn this was a short but sweeeeeet trip! My bro and I stumbled upon The Mission while I was shopping around across the street and hopped over to check out the menu. It also came highly recommended from the boutique owner over at The Basement, so we decided to give it a try. The menu is an interesting fusion of Latin/Asian inspired breakfast/lunch food. I ordered a stack of blueberry pancakes because I saw them on almost every table throughout the restaurant and they were lookin' gooooood. My brother ordered the breakfast burrito that came with some tasty black beans. We both ordered the Cafe con Chocolate coffee drink, which was their house blend with Mexican chocolate mixed in, because that is how we roll and it was delicious. We proceeded to order a Non-fat blackberry, banana smoothie to go because we couldn't help ourselves. The place was poppin' but the service was good. I can see myself coming back to this place if I happened to be in the area because I would be interested to try out their lunch menu.

At 10am, on the weekend, in the middle of the summer, you can't swing a dead cat on the sidewalk outside this place without hitting 20 hungry people in line... that's about the only downfall your gonna get at this joint on Mission Blvd.

I'm not sure i will ever rate a place 5 stars.. but man.. Mission.. you close and you gooood.. you verrrrry goooood.

Some of my favorites are the Cinnimon French Toast, the Roast Beef Hash and Eggs and the breakfast Quesadilla... try the Granola Pancakes as well... there especially good if you plan to run 47 miles or chop down 20 trees after your done .

This is one damn good breakfast! Be ready to wait in line because everyone knows it or get your lazy butt out of bed early. The food is really good and the atmosphere is fun. It better be because you pretty much sit with all your neighbors because the tables are about an inch a part. I went with a friend and we basically ended up having a conversation with the tables to either side of us. Although we all originally tried not to listen to each other's conversations, it couldn't be helped. So we gave in to our anonymity and just had one big conversation among the 6 of us. The food is worth it, but intimate, it is not. I haven't ever eaten anything but breakfast here, but I am guessing all their food is hella good.

My Zen Breakfast....(no pun intended, but  see menu)

Breakfast like you'll never believe.
French toast. Yum. Pancakes. Yum. Mission Croissant. Yum.
Service is laid-back and prices are reasonable. Coffee like Starbucks. Mocas and Lattes, fab.

Go there, take your time, relax, read the paper and feel what its like to live in a beach town.  Dint be in a hurry...it will ruin the ambiance.
Order with a friend and share!

This place pisses me off.  Denise L. said it best when she said "Parking is a bitch."  A bitch I wish I could bitch slap.  I've only been able to eat at this breakfast and brunch only establishment maybe twice out of the 30 times I've tried to.  It's a madhouse on the weekends and parking goes from being a bitch to a m*therf*cker.

The food itself is decent, but I hate when I order strawberry pancakes expecting pancakes topped with fresh fruit only to receive pancakes that look like there were holes cut out of them and replaced with fruit.  My bf really enjoys their french toast, from what he can remember of them since we haven't eaten here since February....not that we haven't tried...we just can't PARK!

Eff you parking gods.....eff you.

I went here with yelpers Stephen, and Jae and Colleen / Tera / Tootsie / Apeshit Crazy / whatever her name is this week.
There is always a wait, everytime.  A long enough wait for Colleen and I to walk 1/4 mile to get coffee, and then sit on their freezing cold metal bench and incur those sexy grate marks across back of our thighs.  Also i felt like everyone was looking at us, but that is because I am extremely paranoid and have personality disorders.

The food is pretty good depending on what you order.  I order the roast beef scramble with fresh jalepenos.  The coconut banana french toast is like dessert for breakfast.  Colleen finally met a sausage that she did not like here.
Our waitress was very pregnant and grumpier than me.  Our table was situated against the wall by a lone high window that cast strong sunlight right into poor Steven's face.  Steven sat there squinting and blinking, his eyes were watering.  It made me feel happy. I started singing "Sunny Side Shteven... squinting in da sun"    I pulled a couple phone books out from under his little butt, but then he couldn't see the table top. He sat under the table mumbling "yes my precious" and then grabbed himself a booster seat.  He said he was talking about a ring.  "What kind of ring?" I wondered, as I looked at Jae smiling and slurpping crappy coffee.   He then launhed into his tirade about how he married some girl without ever having kissed her and then she left him on the side of the freeway.  If you have met Steven, you have heard the story at least 3 times.  Maybe he was under he table telling it to the table post, who has also probably heard the story a few times.

The tables are uncomfortably close and that bothers me as well.

Put it this way, if they expanded the space, hired more waiters and got parking, it would be awesome.  Parking is a bitch.  The food is better than the Broken Yolk though about 1.5 times the cost.   Right now their "Mission" should be to improve the service.

Good food and good coffee- what more can you ask for? I was particularly happy that their menu had healthy options and traditional (not so healthy) items for my bf. It's hard to carry on a decent conversation here, and it's more expensive than your average diner, but the atmosphere is great.

I cannot tell people enough how much i love this place.  Hands down the best breakfast in SD.  The rosemary bread that comes with the egg dishes is phenominal--I haven't tried one thing there that hasn't impressed me.  The ONLY thing that sucks is the line to get in every morning (seriously).  Avoid the weekends if you can or get there really early in the morning...I usually drive by around 9am and there is always a line.

This place is excellent; however, parking is bitchy in that area (I usually skate from PB) and theres usually a long wait on the weekends. I waited an hour once with one other person on a Sunday at noon. It was well worth it for sure. Everything was great including the coffee. Also very reasonable prices for the quality of food and service you receive.

You know when food melts in your mouth and you can't imagine being happier eating anything else than what you are currently eating?  That was my experience with the banana-blackberry pancakes.  Even my sister was won over and she hardly likes pancakes.  so good.  Rosemary potatoes- also excellent, but I recommend asking for them crispy (if you like that style of course).  However, the rosemary breakfast was lacking a fruit or vegetable or anything colorful.  It was potatoes, eggs, and toast.  A major selling point, the sauteed tomatoes, were a product of false advertising.  The DICED tomatoes were barely visible and very few to which the waitress responded, "they are only a garnish."

And now for the lacking star:  While you are waiting outside for your table, they will let you buy your coffee, but you can only get it in a to go cup.  The to go cup, is the cheapest version I have seen this side of the Mississippi.  I don't mind the service because I can't imagine dealing with the number of customers they see on the weekend, but I do think they could manage to buy the buzzers you hand out to be people waiting for a table.  The poor host was constantly running around trying to find people.  Finally, I'm into ambiance and this place is lacking.

But, four stars because most importantly, the food is spectacular.

We've only visited Mission Cafe twice.

9/2006-weekday late brunch (an hour or so before they closed).  Only two other tables of ppl already eating.  The best blueberry pancake we have had & killing Coffee shake to note (we both agree:  one being a non-coffee drinker and the other coffee drinker).  Waiter got us a fruit cup/basket to go by request.  Discovered by serendipity (driving down the street, starving, going ini-mini-myni-mo).  Vowed to return.

5/26/2007-Saturday noon.  Crowded and waited ~20 minutes for a table for two.  Blueberry pancake was bleh...blueberries were small and sour, and the pancakes texture and flavor tasted weird.  Like the oil wasn't clean or something.  Coffee shake was still good.  Country breakfast or whatever it was (eggs, bacon, potatos and some fruit) was OK.  It was our second visit to San Diego and we made a point to visit Mission Cafe again.  A little disappointed but not willing to give up on it yet.  We'll be back.

Four stars cuz we think they may have been too busy that day.  Plus service was good and price was right for both visits.  We saw kids eating both times.  Not bothersome even if the kids got a little louder.  Parking was hard both times though.  Had to circle a few times and park blocks away...but then you'd probably expect it given the location.

Loved it.  Love breakfast.  Picky breakfast eater.  This place has it all.  The pancakes are out of this world.  Hash and eggs... a "tour de force".  Go.

I have excellent memories about this place.

I used to come here for brunch after Saturday karate practice with a group of friends.  The coffee is good, the food is good (decent vegetarian selection), and the service is good (MOST of the time).

The week before Thanksgiving, there was a guy wearing a Gstring with a turkey located on his business roller skating around the front window.  Sorry to say, I didn't whip out my camera phone fast enough.

There is nothing like eating a veggie burrito at The Mission after four hours of strenuous exercise/ kicking and punching people.

Sweet! Another local institution!

On Sunday, Stephie came down from the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area to housewarm, so we took her to The Mission. The host said, "30 minute wait," so i said, "what if we go 'cross the street to the Liar's Club for some bloodies," and he said, "perfect, i'll put you at the top of the list when you get back." So we did and he did. Lemme tell you, it was pretty sweet to step ahead of all the (other) commoners waiting outside in the mist. Kinda like a VIP at a club, as i understand from online porn.

Food? Still delicious. The breakfast quesadilla was a shade less awesome than i anticipated, but Sarah's French toast was jammin' and Stephie's zen breakfast (which seems quite popular) was totally on-point. (Last week i had the roast-beef hash & eggs, which comes with horseradish (yay!) and those fragrant rosemary potatoes--though they're not super-buttery, they taste like they've been grown in the stuff.) And the service was good.

Definitely an A+.

Good art? Check.
Great food? Check.
Totally sweet double ceiling-fans that rotate because of gyroscopic action? Check and where can i get one?

[edit: i had some awful service recently. Atrocious, in fact. i was on the close side of flipping the fuck out. Sure, i've worked service: sometimes you forget to get someone's order--no biggie. But you apologize, put it in, and get the kitchen to make up for your mistake; that's what tipping out is for.

But no dice. She knew she muffed it, so she sent out--with another server(!)--Sarah's cinnamon role. Another 10 minutes went by before her eggs came. Then another five minutes before my pancakes came. Then another five minutes before my eggs & bacon came. Mind you, we had ordered, oh, say, 50+ minutes before. After she forgot about us.

i tipped out 10%--she obviously wasn't from California, so maybe she thought that we had nothing but time, she was only keeping us from hitting up some gnarly surf, bra. Fuck that--were i a New Yorker you wouldn't have gotten shit.

MINUS ONE STAR FOR THE SHIT-STICK SERVICE FROM THAT NY/NJ-COWARD SERVER!

My only regret is that i didn't tip out less. Otherwise the food was quite tasty.]

Mocha large please.....mission french toast..yes...and a side of bacon and eggs too....YUMMMM I just can not go here and order anything else. This place has the best french toast in town and it never disappoints. I love the way its on Egg (challah) bread moist and full of cinnamon flavor. The mocha's and chai lattes are devine here as well. Though there is always a wait at this location it is still easier to get a seat then the one in mission beach. This restaurant will always have some nostalgia for me and will forever be a breakfast stop on my visits to San Diego as it always served me well when I lived close by. Always hits the spot the day after a long night out on the town too.

This place is wonderful and refreshing for a breakfast joint. It was great vegetarian food, like the Zen breakfast, mmmmm. The tofu is seasoned perfectly and there are great veggies and the coffee choices are wonderful! Just get ready to wait in line on the weekend....but it's all worth it!

Great place for breakfast. Love the plato verde con huevos (gooshy egg and sweet corn tamale is a wonderful combination), Mission french toast, and the roast beef hash. Coffee is good but has gone downhill a little as of about a year ago. Be prepared for an extended wait on weekend mornings, but service is pretty efficient once you get in.

I would give them five stars if it hadn't been for the ridiculous wait.
True, we had a giant party (10) for a little restaurant, but they kept us waiting for an hour while they seated every single other party, including people that just walked up and weren't put on the wait list at all.

But anyhoo, the pancakes were delicious! Huge and fluffy, and I love the variety of flavors. I got the meal with the eggs and potatoes - eggs were pretty ordinary, but the potatoes were amazing! Usually I'm disappointed by tasteless breakfast potatoes, but these were perfect - seasoned with rosemary and crispy, not dry and just salty enough.

Everyone else seemed pleased with their meals as well, since almost every plate was cleaned (although that might have been a result of being kept waiting until we were starved), but I didn't try anyone else's food, I was so concentrated on mine.

I'll have to come back next time I'm in SD, with a smaller group. Oh, and parking really sucks in that area.

Thanks to sis, who apparently loves food maybe even more than me (gasp!), Miss L and I ventured to the eclectic little place by the beach for some breakfast.  Thanks also to a tip for leaving early, we only had to wait 15 minutes to get a table.  GAWD the lines were long and before I went in I marveled at the idea that people didn't seem to mind waiting for 45 minutes to be seated.

And then the food came.

Fat, dripping, fluffy cinnamon swirled french toast and saucer sized blackberry and banana pancakes.  NO, that wasn't my very own order.  The toast was L's.  I did have a taste though.

You know how normally pancakes with fruit in them can be a little sour, making you wonder if the chefs in the back needed a little taste of Hell's Kitchen and Chef Ramsay for serving such a face puckering sopping mess?  This wasn't the case at all!  The blackberries were sweet and juicy and the bananas actually weren't oxidized to the point of looking like mini hockey pucks.  For the amount of food, the prices were spectacularly decent, especially on a teacher's budget.  The waitress was entertaining and knowledgeable....need I say more?

So thanks to my big sis, I'll be looking forward to stopping by again if I'm in town.

I'm going to attempt to write a tame review, without being biased by the horrendous service that I encountered here.  I managed to make it in for breakfast on a Friday morning when the line was not out the door.  In fact, we got seated right away - bonus!  I took my time poring over the menu so that I could pick something that was *just right* for the mood I was in - which was ravenous!  We settled on our entrees, ordered from the surly waitress, and then sat back to enjoy our coffee and the scenery while we waited for our meals.  And waited, and waited some more...and kept waiting.  The table of 2 that had come in after us had already ordered, finished their meals, and paid before we even saw our plates.  Excuse me?!  And when my boyfriend managed to get the waitress's attention to ask what was taking so long, she blandly responded, "its still cooking."  Well, needless to say she didn't get much of a tip.  However, I will admit that the food  was excellent, although my appetite was soured slightly by the unpleasant service.  I will certainly give it another shot - but not mid-morning on the weekend!

This place taught me to love granola and, especially, when it's flavored with apple juice instead of millk. I know they have real food on the menu but this place taught me the value of simple things.
