This place is pretty freaking awesome, you know for an ole boys' club and all. If you are lucky enough to "belong" or lucky enough to know someone who "belongs" you need to go here STAT.
Maybe it's just that I love my fair city a little too much (is that even possible?), but the idea of having finely crafted drinks (I'll have a marrrtini, shaken not stirred) in the Sears Tower at a table overlooking views that are unbeatable makes me feel special, like one of the privileged few. And I like it.
Truth be told, it's exclusive, it's expensive, it's old school, and you have to provide like 6 IDs to get in. But it really IS special, a one of a kind place, so if you can get in through a friend or afford the membership yourself, put on your fancy clothes and enjoy a nice evening at the Metropolitan Club.
I'm beginning to have an extensive history with the metropolitan club.
My aunt and uncle were married here in 2003, I think it was, I was 14 so not very critical at the time, and it was more or less the nicest establishment I'd ever been to at that time.
Having been brought back twice now by that same aunt and uncle who ADORE the place, once for a meal just for the heck of it, and once to watch the Fourth of July fireworks, I still love it.
Unless someone else paid though, there is simply no way I could afford this, and plus, I'm not a member, so I love those tagalong trips!
The service is basically what you'd expect from a legitimately high-end restaurant, Maitre'D on down.
The server I had last time was phenomenal. My four-year-old cousin was going nuts (this is essentially not a family restaurant) and he helped handle the situation with grace. He also knew EVERYTHING about the cuisine, as expected from great waiters.
If I had to classify it, though, I'd say it's more of a 40+ establishment, for those with refined tastes. There is little to nothing for someone unfamiliar with extremely fancy cuisine, as in, American food. I really dislike fish but can only take my meat certain ways without being turned off, thus the current menu was not greatly to my liking, although the choices I did have turned out great. My aunt and uncle, as stated, adored it.
The view IS pretty damn impressive - out the lake, waaay down the Kennedy to the northwest. What do you expect from the 66th floor of the Sears Tower?
I can only imagine how much a single trip costs though...
I was lucky enough to experience a wedding at the Metropolitan Club recently. It was everything I expected it to be. Here is a list of the things that stood out.
1. Breathtaking views
2. Exclusive-feeling
3. Rich details
4. The finest food served by the most knowledgeable, friendly servers
5. Dancing felt like I was dancing on top of an entire glowing city up there!
This review is just about the Fitness Club. I'm a member simply because I work in the building, so for me, being able to go to the gym at lunch or before work is crucial. I think anyone who works in the Willis Tower should check out this club. The pros are: Despite a smaller space, the gym is never really crowded and the layout makes a lot of sense. You can get a good work out in with cardio and weights without being inconvenienced. There are TVs to watch the news in the morning, sufficient cardio equipment and 2 exercise rooms. Free coffee and wifi in the morning is a big plus. The towel service and the bathroom amenities are great. I usually come to work in work out gear and then change. The cons... it's a bit dark and dreary, you don't get the same atmosphere here than you do in an Equinox type of an establishment. It's generally an "older" crowd, so you are unlikely to get inspired to work out harder by looking at your peers.
No joke, they take security seriously here. Bring valid ID if you plan on going here.
There is FREE parking across the street with validation. I found out about this afterward but it is nice to know that this is available.
I don't need to talk about the breathtaking views. With the exception of the Signature Room, there is no other place in Chicago with a view like this.
Food and service is almost textbook. This is how a fine dining restaurant is supposed to be. Our waiter and busboy was super attentive. My wine glass never got less than a quarter full, my water glass the same way. The food was delicious. I had the lamb porterhouse and it AMAZING. Cooked perfectly.
However, walking in, it feels OLD SCHOOL. The decor is still 70s outside of the Club itself. There is wood all over and the lighting is dim and low.
If you get a chance to come here, JUMP at it. Everyone should experience this at least once. Metro does lose a star because "normal" people cannot really go traipsing in here and try it out.
Golf claps all around for The Metro Club.
I had the most exquisite and "nouveau" experience coming to the Metropolitan Club with some of my dearest friends.
Located in the Sears Tower, (or should I unfortunately say, the future Willis Toiwer), the ambiance was what you would dream of for an exclusive club. The decor was rich, chic, and wood by dim light. The tables of course, were covered in fine white cloth, and the staff, knowledgeable and professional.
Not to mention the view was fantastic. The City of Chicago is beautiful at night, and you can observe it from all directions from the club's windows.
We dined on the prix fixe, three course menu offered as part of Chicago's Restaurant Week.
For the first course, I had the Rosemary Pierced Diver Scallops with pickled grapes, mâche, and juniper berry beurre blanc. The scallops were tender and well complemented by the beurre blanc and flavor of the mâche. The accompanying pickled grapes were a surprise, sweet and sour, yet strangely befitting.
For my second course I ate the Green Tea Spiced Opah with baby bok choy, purple sticky rice and yuzu beurre blanc. It was my first experience eating opah (a ~200 pound red fish!) The opah was cooked nicely yet not overdone so that its consistency was between a crusted fillet and sashimi. The fish went well with the purple sticky rice, which is normally used as a dessert rice, which had the texture of brown rice but smaller grains and aesthetic vibrancy.
For dessert, I had the Coffee & Chocolate with Valrhona chocolate and vanilla mascarpone torte, espresso sauce, mocha custard shot, tequila foam and malted ice cream. For the several of us who chose this dessert, we raved about the malted ice cream. The torte was rich and huge, surrounded with a dark chocolate shell. I could barely finish it. But I did!
In the end, I was absolutely stuffed, and content beyond means. Not to mention, I think we were able to take some nice pictures from the club's windows.
Other dishes I tried from my friends were also great:
First course: rabbit wellington (tender, I would hopefully get this next time)
Main course: lamb porterhouse (also tender, and a large portion, my choice for next time); and the oregon sablefish (melted in your mouth upon first bite, and well paired with andouille sausage for a kick).
Here's to hoping that the Metropolitan Club will be featured again for Chicago's next Restaurant Week!
I attended a career enhancement event here. This place is definitely old school money, and that's a good thing. If I were planning an event, I'd definitely look into this place.
I went here for a charity event. It wasn't as formal as the dining area, but it was baller status.
The appeitizers were great, the drinks free. The bar wasn't fully stocked, but it is a charity, and beggers can't be choosers.
This dining club requires a membership, that's A).
2. I was lucky enough to work for a partner company, so was able to eat here on occasion.
ix: The service is impeccable. Seriously impeccable. We're talking high society here.
Thirdly, the food is fantastic.
- All meals are charged to your membership, which is nice when entertaining clients as no one sees a price list.
Finally, you never have to sign a bill. Again, it is all billed to your membership.
e. In the immortal words of one Ferris Bueller, "If you have the means, I highly recommend."
I went here for a sorority formal a few years back. Would have been cool if is wasn't foggy that night...we couldn't see anything outside the windows.
Didn't eat there...just drank. It seemed like just a big room with some tables.
Wow.
Had a welcome to the company lunch here and was astounded. The service was indescribable. The people at the Metropolitan all wear suits and look like old money. Elderly gentleman with dignified looking broads - not the trash you see on the streets but classy ladies that actually have brains. The club is so baller that they don't even have prices on their menus, the people that go don't really care about price.
I can't believe our company had our holiday party here. They have the biggest, juiciest shrimp ever. Their cocktail sauce was the best I've ever had as well. Their drinks? Oh-my-god.
I wonder how much the partners at my consulting firm pay for membership... this place is ridiculous. I'm lucky to have even set foot in this high-society place. The view from the 66th floor of the Sears Tower is awesome.
The food...wow...yeah...crab cakes... pastries... oh the memories...
After bouncing around different bars and restaurants for a few years, my company settled on the Metropolitan Club for our holiday party the last two years (see Ray L.'s review). I couldn't be happier with that decision.
We had buffet-style meals both years and all the food was top-notch. The freshly-carved roast beef last year and the mahi mahi this year stand out in particular, but there wasn't a single misstep in any of the dishes. That's a true rarity when dealing with such high-volume catering.
The bartenders are great and really don't mess around with their pours. I ordered scotch and the guy didn't hesitate pouring four full fingers. Well done.
And the atmosphere...wow. Just a phenomenal view and they did a great job decorating the room to make it all the more festive. It's a very classy place to the point I almost felt bad when things got rowdy later in the night. Almost.
Had my wedding there late July. The view was fantastic, guests are still raving about the food a month later, and above all, the service was amazing. The people who work there exemplify good service (and trust me I am hyper critical about this). During our honeymoon, my husband and I were casually reflecting on the wedding and we decided that our best decision out of the innumerable amount of decisions we had to make, was to have our wedding and dinner reception here. We were thrilled. Ann was our coordinator, and Abe (don't know his last name) was our captain. Great job and thank you!
Thank goodness for Restaurant Week and getting the exclusive to become available to the general public. I'm mean how many restaurants typically require you to show ID just to get into the building. Yes, it is the Sear's Tower and all, but typically you have to have a membership too to dine here. I was loving the lobby and bar area. We were seated quite promptly at a table overlooking a gorgeous view of the city with all the pretty lights at night. There were quite a few options for the prix fixe special. I chose the salad option offering two types, one in which was a green bean salad with a dash of the raspberry vinagrette of sorts. Of course, I would say that the description sounds sexy! I had the lambchops with the chipotle mashed potatoes that were quite delicious, and the chocolate berry dessert was perfect for any chocolate lover. They also had a $6 glasses of certain house wines for the night. The service here is spectacular - from the hostess, the manager, and the servers! Something about this place makes me want to get a membership, and its not just because the men here are dressed nice.
I've been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. I highly recommend going for dinner, where you will be able to enjoy breathtaking views from the abundant floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor is rich and lush and fitting with the food. We tried the chef's special for our appetizer and it was delicious. It was very thinly sliced, raw steak. For dinner I had their bone-marrow risotto in a red wine reduction, and the flavors were so complimentary. This restaurant is the perfect place for a romantic dinner.
i went here for a farewell dinner for a co-worker. i agreed to go earlier in the day when we were told it would be at a different, less exciting venue. i was unstoked, but... commitment is commitment. when i found out that instead of third floor random club, we would be straight balling at the sears tower, i was infinitely more excited.
we arrived after work, so we got to watch the sun set as we drank some wine i probably can't afford and took pictures like total newbie tourists. dinner was intense. they served me some sort of vegetable lasagna in place of whatever fish everyone else was eating that involved no meat or pasta, but scored pretty high on the one to awesome scale. even the dinner rolls were amazing. dessert involved a bunch of berries in a sweet almond shell and me eating directly from a bowl of fresh whipped cream.
'so if this place is so rad, why knock a star off?', i bet everyone is wondering. we had an event there the next day for work and they snuck away my food before i even got a chance to finish my taters. and i was hungry. that sucks.
Went to the Met. Club on Tuesday. Best view in the city, followed by the best food & service. Great wine suggestions by the wine guy. They rehabbed the dining room & it looks great. All new everything. The bar is cool to, with some sweet, huge HD TV's. Quail appetizer & Pork loin and shoulder entree. Our server was great & friendly. I have had some great meals here. My ears popped in the elevator.
Went here last night for restaurant week and it was simply AMAZING. This has to be the best value for restaurant week. View was breathtaking, service was well worth 20% and the food phenomenal. I can not say enough about this place. I know I can not afford a membership but I am thinking about it. We were invited back to check it out for membership and enjoy a complimentary breakfast or lunch. Definitely going to take advantage of that as I am very curious what it would take for membership. If you have a chance I highly recommend checking it out and if you can do it for restaurant week all the better. Be prepared to have an OUTSTANDING experience.
We went here for dinner last night as part of restaurant week. It's located on the 67th floor of the Sears Tower, and has incredible views of the city. Outside of restaurant week (which they extended until 3/6), you have to be a member or guest to eat here...so definitely check it out within the next week if you can. I believe jackets are required as all the men appeared to be wearing one. Everything was exceptional. The service is friendly and warm, at the same time formal and professional, kind of a throw-back to old-fashioned service..probably the best service we can remember having. The dinner included an amuse bouche and after-dinner petit fours. The food was very impressive. The appetizers, particularly the rabbit wellington and rosemary pierced scallops, were excellent. Very impressive cassoulet main course. The opah fish was good, though the yuzu beurre blanc was too tart for me. Desserts were top notch, especially the Chocolate & Nougat. They offered us an invitation for a complimentary brunch/lunch to learn about membership. A very memorable night, and highly recommended.
