Nice touches and a sense of style.

Stayed here for a couple of nights while in town for friend's wedding. Never been past the airport in Dallas before, so though downtown didn't exactly leave me raring for more, my hotel experience was good. Happy hour free? Ample Breakfast served? Milk and cookies? Plus, i'm a total sucker for both things historic and design elements which are well-thought out. I liked the levels of the hotel in that they had unique characters; friends and I hung in the "Library" on floor two and chatted late. A classy vibe. I found the bed extremely comfortable. There were some rouge points-- the toliet did some clogging, the elevators were slow.. but really, these are features of enjoying a historic building, and i can appreciate that type of quirk. Fitness center was kinda a meh.. but i've seen worse. At least they had a yoga mat. All service people were jovial and efficient. Nice to be right connected to Starbucks.. i easily had my green tea on all day long (a symbol of a good weekend ;). I walked from here to the Dallas farmers market; not far and i was curious what that would look like (my answer: mass marketed and non-organic, but fun to see farmers in any case with wares). So overall, i dug the Magnolia and take a boutique over the old chain any day.

This building is fantastic, and at first glance the rooms promise to be very nice, if a bit cheesy.

But the wifi wasn't working (for anyone), the water pressure was abysmal, the counters are cheap laminate, the sofa was made of plastic (vinyl upholstery), the closets have those dumb anti-theft hangers, and they forgot my wake up call.

5 star building with a 1 star motel-quality stay.

Very cool boutique hotel just outside downtown Dallas. Large rooms at a reasonable price.

Watch the wifi signal, as it's very tough to get in your room, but easy in the lobby.

Also, that part of Dallas is dead at night, so you may need to take a cab.

Staying for 3 nights on business, I had high hopes for the Magnolia after hearing such great things. The building itself it fantastic, and although the elevators are slow as molasses, they're cool (and original 1920's).

What drove me crazy was the little things, like WiFi not working in the room and the hotel having no solution to that.  I was able to get WiFi working in the lobby and other public areas, but their ISP was blocking the ports for me to get to Gmail and Yahoo Mail via my email client.  A quick call to tech support resulted in me being advised to call google or yahoo because it was their problem, not the ISP's.  I eventually walked across the street to the Adolphus where I got great FREE WiFi in the lobby that worked like a charm.

One other thing that kinda drove me crazy was the remote for the TV didn't work.  When I called the front desk, they said they would send someone up with a new one, but they never showed.

Finally, the pillows were horrible, but you can buy them for $45 each! The bed had both firm and soft, but the firm was too firm and the soft was too soft.  Five of my coworkers who were also staying at the Magnolia had the same complaint.

I did enjoy the free hot breakfast, free beer/wine at happy hour, and free cookies and milk in the evenings; those were a nice unexpected touch.

The next time I'm in the area for an overnight, I'll try the Adolphus next door.  The Magnolia was cool, but just wasn't worth the high nightly rate.

I loved the Magnolia Hotel. It's in a very historic building, and it has its quirks (particularly the ancient shaky elevators). But it's kinda perfect for staying in the middle of downtown Dallas. For such an old building, the room was shockingly spacious and modern. The views were great from the 20-somethingth floor as well.

But what makes Magnolia special is two things: the history/trademark and the little free amenities. As I mentioned, this building is old as town, and has Dallas' signature red magnolia winged horse neon red sign on the roof. They also have a great version of this at the main entrance. The hotel kinda anchors this part of downtown. As for the amenities, you gotta love that offer FREE hot breakfast, FREE drinks during happy hour, and FREE cookies and milk at night. Who doesn't like those things? Who especially doesn't like them for free?

All-in-all, a great, affordable, historical, comfortable hotel in the middle of it all. I'd definitely stay again.

Inside tip: If you don't want to pay for overnight parking, the metered spots on the street outside are free after 6 and always open. They don't come back on 'till 7am so, if you're in for business, just wake up, feed the meter for an hour, go back to your room and get ready, and then get on your way!

The rooms are tiny, the service is bad, the elevators are frightening, and the part of downtown it's in is empty. I cannot believe this place stays open and that other people have had good experiences here. It was nearly empty when I stayed there on a Saturday night. Sure it's cheaper than other boutique hotels, but spend the extra money to stay somewhere like W or Hotel Zaza, in happening areas, with gourmet restaurants and fun clubs/lounges. This place's time is over.  Like I said, spend a few extra bucks for a better hotel, location and service.

Stayed here this past weekend. The building so gorgeous! The check in and out was a breeze. No long lines, no crabby attitudes. The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The location is the best! Right next door to Iron Cactus and a ton of other fun bars. When I made my reservations, I was able to request either a lower floor or higher one. We got a high one as requested. They have a complimentary happy hour EVERY night from 5:30-6:30 consisting of beer and wine. They also have a complimentary cookie buffet at night and a complimentary breakfast buffet in the morning. GREAT DEAL!!

I may not be the best person to review this place but I feel like I must because it is a significant location in my life.
I only stayed here one night but was totally impressed and enjoyed every minute.  I could have stayed and relaxed there for days.  Our room was very spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was large and very nice.
The location of this hotel is awesome. Right in the middle of downtown Dallas (although downtown Dallas itself does leave much to be desired...but that's not the fault of the hotel).  The atmosphere in the hotel is really unique in that is has a 'old hotel' feeling but is still very modern in decor and amenities.
As I read the other reviews for the Magnolia, I realize that I missed a lot. I had no idea that there were free cookies and milk to be had nor did I know that there was FREE breakfast! :( Hubby and I did walk down to the attached Starbucks in the morning for coffee after we slept in.  We were very happy with that.
It could be that I did not know about these amazing amenities because the one night we spent there was our wedding night. :)  When hubby was checking in on our wedding day (early check-in so we didn't have to worry about it after our arrival that night) he mentioned that we were getting married that night and they upgraded us for free!
We were very pleased and would love to stay there again.

I stayed and conferenced at The Magnolia Hotel.  The service was great and my room was cozy.  The bed was really comfortable and I had plenty of room to spread out.  I was on the 24th floor but I didn't have a view because of the shape of the building -- my window looked into other people's rooms.  My only complaint about the room is the lighting -- it was very dimly lit, which made it difficult to work on my computer.

The elevators were a pain in the butt.  Very slow to pick me up at the 24th floor.  Every time I went downstairs I had to wait several minutes for one of the five elevators to come to my floor.

A highlight is the cookie buffet at 8:00 each night.  Milk and cookies before bed.  Yummy!

I sort of want to give five stars, but I didn't technically stay at the Magnolia Hotel, so I feel like I can't.  I attended a conference in Dallas this past week and went to a related alumni party at the Magnolia.  From the street, the hotel looked amazing.  The style is fabulous from the entrance to the lobbies all the way up to the bar.  It's hip and modern without being cold or seeming overly "designer-y."  It felt like it was just naturally well-styled.  The caterers as well as the concierge (who gave us directions to the DART rail post-party) were really lovely and personable.  I would love to stay there sometime.

In 2007, I spend a week at the Magnolia for a conference and then tacking on a few days for fun. The hotel is beautiful and we enjoyed reading all about the history of the building.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite with a kitchen which was a corner room. The bed was very comfortable. The bedroom furniture and linens were great. The living couch and chair need to be replaced. The bathroom was large and well appointed. The kitchen had all the essentials and everything worked well.
There were a ton of windows for great light and I found it very quiet. I do not think I saw anyone else on my floor.

The room service has a limited menu and is not available 24 hours -- and just an FYI -- most restaurants in the area close very early as you are in the downtown business district.

The location of the hotel is great -- close to mass transit and alot of the tourist stuff as well. My family was able to walk most anywhere during the day. At night, this area is deserted (as it is the business district) not at all like downtown Chicago or DC. This area is also going through a lot of redevelopment of the high rises so there is a lot of construction which makes the area alittle disconcerting at night.

My only disappoint was consistently with the service. We arrived late --after 11pm --due to flight delays and check in took over 45 minutes! The reason for the delay is that even though they took my ID to locate our reservation -- they proceeded to check me in as someone else! When I went to sign the paperwork I noticed that we did not have the right daily cost per night nor did I have a reservation for the right number of nights. Therefore, we had to start all over with the check-in process.

Other issues were with customer service when we asked for extra towels it took 2 hours and 2 phone calls to receive them. This also happened with a request for an ironing board and even room service took much longer than we were told.

The hotel does not have a concierge regardless of what they say. We could not get recommendations to restaurants nor could we even get directions to well known locations -- one theater was literally 2 blocks away and nobody could say how to get there!
We also asked where a grocery store and laundry services were located and nobody could tell me. It turns out there are laundry room in the hotel but no one could tell me that.

Overall I would say this is a beautiful hotel and as long as you don't need any guidance or questions answered.

PS -- Give yourself extra time to ride the very slow elevators.

Easily my favorite place to stay when in Big D. If possible, get a room on the historical 24th floor; it's where the old executive offices were. For a very reasonable rate, you can get a cavernous room with hardwood floors and wood-paneled walls. The service is always first-rate and the complimentary feeding times are very nice. The room service is rather lacking, and last time I was there they didn't have a real hotel restaurant. Still, a class act that's definitely a welcome departure from the typical chain hotel.

the service here is wonderful, which is what bumps this hotel into the five star range.  rooms were not humongous, but sufficiently spacious, and the beds were super comfortable.  the shuttle service and cookie and milk evening snack were also noteworthy!

in the thick of downtown, near the convention center and neiman marcus!

I stayed here for a week while in the Big D for my jobby job.  The hotel is a converted office building, so all the rooms are different shapes and layouts; although the rooms are sometimes small, the ceilings are high and the windows are enormous.  It's nicely decorated in a modern way that doesn't seem incongruous with the historical building itself.  I wasn't paying for my room, so I can't speak to how much you'd actually get for your money if you paid regular rates (which I think are around $200/night?), but it was one of the nicer places I've stayed.  They have tons of free food:  free hot breakfast buffet every morning, free happy hour in the evenings with wine and beer, and, my personal favorite, a free cookies-and-milk buffet every evening.  With three different flavors of milk and piles of cookies!  The area around the hotel isn't especially awesome, considering almost everything closes early (6 pm), but since I was working, I didn't especially care.  Although I was glad to return home to my own bed, my boyfriend and my cat, I did have a hard time getting used to no cookies and milk every night.
