Great tap room, its something Boston has been missing for a while. Food is solid too. They have a rotating tap list of very quality brews.
Downside is they always are playing music WAY too loud. You can barely hear the people you are sitting with. Besides this, it is one of the best places around. -

Lower Depths, it has been decided, is my favorite bar in all of Boston. Lucky for me, it's my neighborhood bar; but I would venture out there often even if it weren't. They have the most splendid selection of craft beers with the kegs in constant rotation. The ambiance is warm with a great mural of drunkards and druggies covering the walls. The staff is absolutely awesome! Naor and Amber are generally always the same two working...both are super sweet and extremely knowledgeable with their beers. Plus, they generally have great music playing...anything from dubstep to indie rock.
They also has some badass food with a great assortment of vegetarian options. I usually get the veggie hummus plate...lots of veggies with seasoned pita chips and housemade hummus. Healthy and tasty. They also have a really great portabella sammy as well as a black bean burger. The menu's extensive and has tons of meat options too. My bf swears the quesadilla burger is one his favorites in the city. It's essentially a cheeseburger wrapped up in a tortilla with jalapenos and guac. Yet perhaps the most popular menu items are the tater tot baskets. They have several different kinds like the Kenmore (cheese, aioli, bacon and chives) which are the perfect drunk munchie food.
Their outdoor patio is ideal in the summer...assuming you can get a seat. The only drawback is that it's a beer and wine bar only. So if you're looking for liquor, look elsewhere. But if you want a new hangout spot, definitely check out Lower Depths.

Chin up, Red Sox fans. I mean, really, let it go. I know I'm not a Red Sox fan and all, but I'm more sick of the "collapse theory" headlines than I am of hearing about #occupyanywhere.
But, in the absence of Red Sox games, this place is pleasantly quiet and accessible.
Extensive, though kinda pricey beer selection. Surprising selection of Northern California beer on tap. Overwhelming selection of bottles.
Cheap hot dogs.
Kinda crappy music accompanied by disturbing New Hampshire leaf-peeping train video????
Cash only.Listed in: Beating the Blue Law Blues

I will keep this short and sweet, this is the BEST beer bar in Boston. They have knowledge, attentive staff, a great selection of beer from all over the world and some of the best bar food around including $1 Fenway Franks. I used the live in Kenmore Sq. for 2 years and always had a good time and good food when I frequented here.

This place is solid. Go here all the time. Fantastic selection of beers both bottled and on tap. The Kenmore tots are amazing, cheese, scallions, and perfectly fried little tots with some spicy sauce! Def check this place out for some good brews, food, and fun.

Came here on a Tuesday night and it was awesome. This place has a great vibe to it and their beer menu is so friggin' extensive. The staff are really chill, and since it was a low key night, we got to chat a bit and take our time with drink recommendations. They played great music - love how the dude changed it up from indie/electro to a 90s dance hits compilation at midnight. Gotta love a bunch of hipsters in their mid-20s having a "Baby Got Back" moment.

Awesome things:
Great beer selection, yummy tater tots, and uber yummy hot dogs (veggie ones are good too) and other things on their menu.
Need I say more?
Not to mention the great staff and outdoor seating (if you can get it).Listed in: Happy Hour

Quite an amazing beer selection. The hotdogs are quite an eyeful. And the service is quite genuine. The down-to-earth, hipster feel is quite welcoming and relaxing. Cash only is quite outdated. Overall, I was quite pleased.

The doorman was funny, and he was really easy to get along with. He was friendly too, which is great for a bar. The bar is CASH ONLY...but besides that it is great. $1 hot dogs, yum and wide beer selection. perfect if you want to experience Cambridge without having to cross the river.

Good music and good tator tots, which is all you can ask of a pub. The last time I was here the played an entire Interpol album, which is a good sign of a place I should go back to again.

Hey, Lower Depths. I've got news for you. "Cash Only" is out of style. Sorry.
Walk up to anyone these days under the age of 30 and they will tell you that they pay for everything on their credit or debit cards. It's so obnoxious when places only accept cash.
Otherwise, this place is a total winner. It's unique - has a huge beer selection, and some really great things on the menu like the hot pretzel. The small outdoor patio is fun and the staff was friendly. The bar inside is a good size as well.
I'd try to get a drink and food here before a Sox game. Far better than trying to get into Game On or Cask and have mediocre food! -
Review from Julie B.
Ever been at a Red Sox game and think , "Man, I really wish I had some peanut butter to put on my Fenway frank"? Me neither.
But for the few of us who may enjoy that, the Lower Depths is here to take hot dogs to a whole new level with a bunch of fun (and possibly disgusting?) combos. I'm not the biggest fan of hot dogs and decided to get the King of Kenmore chicken sandwich instead when I stopped in for lunch on Saturday. It was pretty awesome...but then again anything that includes grilled chicken, bacon and chipotle aioli is a winner in my book. The beer list was long and varied -- I happily washed down my sandwich with an Allagash Tripel.
Despite the good food and beer, the service was really slow and we were pretty much neglected by the waiter. It seems like that's out of the ordinary so I'll blame it on the influx of drunk Bruins fans stumbling in after the parade. I shall be back. -
Review from Adam C.
There's a lot to like about this place: outdoor seating, cheap hot dogs (definitely go crazy on the toppings, they're all pretty solid), tater tots, pretty good draft list, and the fact that you go here instead of GameOn/Cask & Flagon before a Sox game.
So the drawbacks, in order of most frustrating to least:
cash only, frequently indifferent service, impossible to carry a conversation over the ear-splitting thrash metal, not much room to move around, gets super hot when the front doors are closed, TV is too small (either don't have one at all or get a couple huge ones for the baseball fans that are often the primary clientele).
So I advise walking past, and if there's seating on the patio then grab it...you can still head-bang to the thrash metal but from the relative comfort of a cool evening breeze. -
Review from Rachel K.
Surprisingly great beer selection, far above average.
I didn't order food, but friends did- and seemed more than pleased.
Outdoor seating was a plus.
Service was good, but not memorable.
Decor was dive-y but fit the bar well.
Would go back. -
Review from David M.
Great selection of beer and a very cool vibe, but if you're in the lower depths, you're most likely here for the hot dogs. They start at one dollar, and, for a dollar or few more, you can add an amazing selection of toppings, (cheese and chili, peanut butter, anchovies, bacon... the list goes on). Its clean, friendly, without loosing personality. Best of all its cheap.
Bring the dosh, cause they don't accept credit cards. -

I don't think there is a better definition of cheap grease spoon than Lower Depths. What's even better is that is wasn't even all that greasy considering the fare. After a walk through Back Bay, I ended up here with a few friends and we ordered some tots to start and I got a foot long frank with mustard and some coleslaw. The tots were good, though the mexican topping was like it came out of a bag (shredded cheese, tomatoes etc.) and wasn't really melted properly onto the tots.
Hot dog was good, though I think it's a better value by ordered several fenway franks for $1 instead of a footlong. Beer is always very reasonablly priced. In the dead zone of good cheap eats in Back Bay, sink into the Lower Depths! -
Review from Alana H.
Friday night drinks with the coworkers. We sat outside and some had dinner everyone had drinks and we generally enjoyed each others company.
They had Wideners Cider on tap which made me very happy seeing as I don't drink beer. I had 2 and I was a happy girl (content, not drunk). The food I saw everyone order looked really good particularly the mac and cheese. In the beginning our waitress was awesome, she checked in regularly and was really nice. What was disappointing was as the evening progressed it felt like she forgot about our table. My friend order the ice cream sandwich and it never came. She came by a couple of times to bring more drinks, and the bill but never brought his ice cream sandwich. I understand sometimes people forget it was just a bit disappointing. I am also not a fan of "Cash Only", but there is an ATM or you can walk down the block and find an ATM near the T-station.
Nice way to spend a Friday night. -

Lower Depths, I would brave the Green Line for you. I would make a point of stopping at an ATM in advance for you. I would face the legions of postgame beer drinkers in Kenmore for you. I will do all this because of your outstanding tater tots, your inventive hot dog topping selections (just $1 each pre-toppings!) and your beyond impressive beer selection, with more than a few arcane selections for the intrepid beer enthusiast. Also for your imaginative wall art. I like that, too.
(Just one more thing on those tater tots: I hail from the North Country - read: the mooseiest, snowiest, Canada-est part of Maine -- and I love me some poutine. Imagine my astonishment when a Boston beerhouse busts out poutine tots right before my eyes! I will be forever grateful.) -

We sat at the bar on a Thursday night and got friendly and attentive service. Really great attitude and timely. We were presented with the available beer list which is impressive! The bartender told us that there were 180 selections to choose from. I got a Harpoon Oyster Stout on tap.
The menu is a lot of fun! I'd read here about the tater tots and ened up getting them with my cranberry and turkey sandwich. Delicious.
It was pretty noisy, not sure what they can do about that. Maybe next time I'll try a different time.
The menu has lots of fun choices like mac and cheese and hot dogs. This is a great place to take someone for a surprise who likes beer and comfort food. -

As per Yelp reviews, everyone was right about their hot dogs. They are definitely the best I have had in a long time. I got the Chicago dog, which was smothered with onions, 2 pickles, mustard, and mayo. Side dish was some fresh Potato salad.
All came out to 7.50 and the service was good. -

I want so badly to give this a one-star review. To say it is the worst bar I've ever been to. To claim I've reported it to the BBB. Why? Because this bar is the shit, and everyone knows it, and as a result, it's become really popular and sometimes too busy. Such is life.
Anyway, the Lower Depths is hands down my favorite bar in Boston. Exciting and constantly updated tap list, comprehensive bottle list. TATER TOTS. In general, I don't think I've ever ordered a food item I didn't like.
The service here is outstanding. Even on an extremely busy night, if you ask what a certain beer is like, the server will give you an extensive description of it and will sometimes offer a taste. (You can always taste what's on tap, but they don't always outright offer - depends on the server.) These people seriously know their beer. However, sometimes it seems they're really understaffed, which is a shame.
But really... this place is awful. Save your money. Leave the innovative tots, awesome bar food and amazing beer for me.
(As a side note, who do I have to sleep with to get a mug club application?) -

Boston, MA
The two star rating says it all. Meh.
I admit there is a good beer selection and the sweet potato fries I had were tasty. However, the atmosphere was too insane for me. Loud doesn't begin to describe it. Music blaring plus tons of people trying to talk at once isn't my idea of a casual hang out spot, even for drinking. I don't mind raising my voice to talk to the person right next to me but when I have to shout and am barely heard i've had enough.
Also, a fight almost broke out. Classy. -

Well... I didn't plan on eating here tonight. I am a mug club member at this place, and I initially stopped in for a beer on this drizzly Saturday afternoon.
I ended up ordering the classic fish and chips since it was only $10 on their daily specials menu.
I got my order and the food itself was enough to inspire me to write this review.
First of all, the fish consisted of a half dozen nuggets of beer battered Mahi. They were tender and succulent. The breading was crispy, but not crisped. The chips were spiced French fries. Lightly browned outside, hot tender inside. Not greasy at all.
The coleslaw was a coursely chopped blend that gave the entire plate added texture and color.
The dish was well plated and gorgeously balanced.
I've dined here countless times and their food rarely disappoints. I received mine this evening, and the normal run-of-the-mill fishnchips turned out to be a delicacy.
Two mugs ( a weinstephaner and a southern tier hop sun) plus an amazing dinner for $23. A good deal to me.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Obsessed. I love a good hotdog, and here you'll find one just as good, if not better than the ones in the park! The toppings are endless and delicious! Now, I haven't been when the Sox are out of season, but in season it is EXTREMELY LOUD! It's also cash only. But, I promise you can deal with the two downfalls for the bargain of cheap amazing dogs, great beer selection, and fast costumer service!

They charge a buck for a plain hot dog and think that makes up for the shitty music and overpriced beers.

Review from Nik B.
The Lower Depths is the ideal hangout bar. Meet your friends, drink good beer, eat delicious, high-calorie food. It's an answer to the Publick House, although smaller and more humble.
Speaking of high-calorie food, the Lower Depths has tots on the menu! Tater tots! They are served a few different ways. For $5, you can get a gigantic portion of plain tots. Our were perfectly fried and incredible addictive. They were a great pairing to my Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.
We also got the Mac n' Cheese Bite special. Which, while only 3 large bites were served, they were incredible rich with bacon, hot peppers and a perfect breading on the outside. The mac n' cheese on the inside almost tasted fresh, which is a feat for sure.
I wish more of my hangouts took place at the Lower Depths, I know I'll be back for more.
p.s. Why the Cash only? You goons, it's 2011!! -
Review from Sarah d.
The only thing keeping me from coming to this bar every day is that I hate the Green Line. Now, after doing some research, I have come to the realization that The Lower Depths is not currently in charge of the Green Line, so I cannot blame them for how annoying it is to get there. Sidenote: If they were in charge of the Green Line, I think it would be a much more enjoyable transportation experience.
The beer list is deep in bottles and well-edited in draught options. They usually have a few local brews on tap and everything rotates regularly. If you are timid, they have no problem pouring you a taste of anything/everything on tap before you commit. Beer = good. Got it?
The food is drinking food. To clarify: That is not meant to be a knock on the food. It's actually quite good. In fact, it is perfect. For drinking. I don't think I would come here for "dinner", but over the course of an evening I will happily eat one or more hotdogs and scavenge some tots. The food here is perfectly sized and priced for when you get in the "too much beer, not enough salt" situation we've all (I've all?) gotten to know a little too well.
Ohhhhh, but the service, you ask? The Service! These people are just so nice. That's really what it comes down to. They are knowledgable about what they serve, which is awesome, but more importantly, they are nice! Every last one of them. Every single bartender and waitress I have had has been straight-up glorious.
So. Beer. Hotdog. Awesome service. Worth braving the mess that is Green Line, although really I can't wait til it is springtime and I can just walk there. -
Review from Damien S.
Number 200 has to be special. Let's get creative with wordplay.
"If my stomach got rushed to the ER and my hankerin' was played by George Clooney, he'd be calling for 200cc's of $1 Fenway Franks. Stat."
Joke autopsy: It's silly personification coupled with back-to-back numeric references (200 and CC) to this review's significance in my Yelp queue. Does the fun ever stop?!?!
Friends, Romans (CC, ha!) and assorted visiting masses ask me regularly for a rundown of my three favorite Boston eating spots. The Lower Depths makes this list. It's not exciting, ornate, extremely unique, terribly chic or unchic, as it were, in that savvy subcultural manner that fuels many a beer bar.
The Lower Depths, to pull from my favorite thing in the word: corporate lingo, just is what it is.
And THAT, my dearies, happens to be the absolute best spot for cheap, disgustingly delicious hot dogs, pretzels and tots with a brew list that puts most players in the game to shame.
The staff are a step above - always beyond friendly, actually engaging you in conversation and all too eager to join in reindeer games. True story: a server and I got in to a fake brawl on a quiet Wednesday night. Patio chairs were swung and I'm pretty sure she threw a Street Fighter fireball. This sense of humor pervades through every facet of their house. Read the descriptions of their bevvy bible. From Lagers Book 1, Verse 7: "PBR - For dehydrated indie hipsters." So it is written, praise be to Narg.
Two kraut dogs (grilled til split on toasted, buttered buns) and a pint of whatever's rotating on tap can easily meet the $10 mark for an easy lunch, dinner or late night snack. Do yourself a favor and order a dog topped with mac&chz ($3) - it's like a kiddie lunch that'll leave you jonesing for more tube from dusk til dawn (Clooney, ha!)
It's not an obsession (unnatural), a crush (temporary) or bought-in hype (artificial) - this is love, folks.
Happy 200 Yelp! Feed me Lower Depths! Cash only! -
Review from Heather G.

I appreciate the fact that the first thing you see when you walk in is a giant, obnoxious sign that reads "CASH ONLY". I say this because perhaps the most embarrassing thing to happen at a bar/restaurant is to be told, at the end of the night after accumulating a huge tab, that the place only takes cash. Thanks, guys, for being oh-so-blunt.
I am a very serious non-cash carrier, but for the Lower Depths, I make a trip to the ATM. From the outside (and perhaps aided by the bar's location at garden-level on Comm Ave), it looks like a tiny little dive bar. When you walk in, however, expect to be surprised at what the inside of the bar actually looks like. It's clean, sleek, trendy (without being obnoxious), and does have a slightly-hipster feel (hell, the bartender was wearing a vest and dark-rimmed glasses) but not in a "get me out of here before I snap" sort of way. Also, this place serves $1 Fenway Franks and tater tots so how pretentious can it be!?
The food is very cheap (a positive from a place that does not have credit card merchant services), but the beer surprisingly really isn't. The selection is pretty extensive, though I was disappointed to find out the great selection is mostly bottled beers. The variety on tap is considerably smaller and more limited, but I was able to find a delicious Pretty Things (Our Finest Regards) that I stuck to all night. A bit pricey at $7.25 or so, but with 13.5% alcohol content and a deep, rich taste, I'd call this a pretty decent value. I was hoping for a draft selection that rivaled Lord Hobo, so I left a little let down.
Don't expect a culinary adventure here with your loaded hot dogs and fries, but it's nice to see a bar food menu at a "trendy" little bar that isn't priced like the chef is a James Beard winner.
A final comment, the aforementioned vested bartender is EXTREMELY nice. The place was busy on Saturday night (even at an early hour) so service tended to be a bit slow, but he was always warm, smiling, and pleasant. -

This is my favorite place in the city for cheap DELICIOUS food and an awesome beer selection. Can't beat that for an after work dinner or a chill night out with friends.
Nice atmosphere, great patio, very friendly staff, cozy.
I have eaten these all mutliple times and LOVE:
Quesadilla Burger... pretty unique dish too
Fish wrap... mahi mahi w/ mango salsa
Hot dogs
Black Bean Burger
Kenmore tots
Also, the servers seem to take pride in the way they serve the beer and always pour it properly in an appropriate glass, which is always nice.
Only negative... We seem to forget EVERY TIME that it is cash only and have to either run 3 blocks to an ATM or use the ghetto no-name one inside that charges 2 extra bucks. I feel very fortunate when I actually have cash one me. Dammit!
(PS- Last night we had barely enough cash to leave a 15% tip, so we felt like jerks... Would have tipped better with a card, Lower Depths peeps!) -
Review from Chris C.
Great food, great beer, great bartenders all wrapped up in a nice space in a great location. The only real downside was being cash only.
Came here with the work guys for a long pre-Thanksgiving holiday late lunch. I went with the Quesadilla Burger which was a mexican burger wrapped up in a tortilla. It was very tasty although a bit messy. It came with a choice of a bunch of sides but I went with the tater tots. They were awesome.
The beer selection was not blow you away with a million choices, but they had a pretty wide range and all the selections were very interesting. I had a couple different selections from the tap and a bottle. All the selections were great and the nitro stout the bartender suggested was exactly what I was looking for. The bartender was very knowledgeable and treated us very well.
I definitely will be returning here.Listed in: Craft Beer Bars

Great food and beer!!! I come here for their $1.00 hotdogs!!! That's right, $1.00 for a Fenway Frank (add-ons i.e. onions, guacamole, etc. are extra $$). The basket of tater tots are great, too!! The staff is always really friendly and the service is always pleasant. If you are going to a Sox game, I would highly suggest The Lower Depths before the game for cheap(er) food than you will spend at the park. Just make sure to get there early. The place is small and fills up quickly. Also, it's a CASH ONLY place but they do have an ATM onsite.

I went to the Lower Depths for dinner with a friend on Friday night, because I had a $25 http://restaurant.com gift certificate I wanted to use. When I arrived I noticed a http://restaurant.com logo out front with a huge red 'X' over it, so I figured they would not be accepting the certificate, but we decided to stay anyway. I asked the waitress about the http://restaurant.com issue and she told me that http://restaurant.com is a scam and the restaurant loses money every time someone uses a certificate there. She claimed that http://restaurant.com would refund my money, but I have not heard back from them yet.
The waitresses were so nice & knowledgeable and made our choosing drinks & food really fun and relaxed. For dinner, we had a 2 Build-Your-Own Burger with tater tots (4/5), a Fish Wrap with seasoned fries (5/5 from a dedicated fish taco aficionado), and a Quesadilla (3/5). Everyone was happy & impressed with their food.
I would say the drawbacks at the Lower Depths are 1. cash only 2. it's very loud (& got very warm on an early spring day) and 3. the http://restaurant.com thing kinda sucks. I will definitely be back for food & drink. :)
ETA http://restaurant.com did refund the amt of my certificate. -

I don't know why I haven't written a review of the Lower Depths yet. I am such a fan.
They have a great selection of beers, both on tap and in bottles. Definitely read all of the comments on the bottle menu - snark at its best. The staff are really cheerful and make you feel at home.
I've also never had a bad meal there. My faves include the chips and queso dip, steak tips salad, mackin' cheese (add buffalo chicken an blue cheese for a kick), any of their burgers or hot dogs, TOTS!!, and the green monster salad.
As many other reviewers have pointed out, the only drawback is that it's cash only. So, go prepared and you'll be fine! -

Love this place for their food--1$ Fenway Franks, their tater tots covered in bacon in cheese--possibly one of my all time favorites before Red Sox games or for a low key night.
I give three stars because of my experience I had last time I went. I was there for a surprise birthday party and and our waiter who was a little all over the place, put half of peoples drinks on one tab and some on others etc. Basically total chaos. Not only that, when a few of my friends who had never been before asked for a recommendation of what was good to drink, two waiters both recommended beers that cost over $15 each without letting them know of the cost--and felt as though they were duped into ordering a drink they would have never otherwise ordered.
I'm fine with the cash only situation, but maybe the management could somehow work out a system in which you could start a tab based on names to accommodate bigger groups in a more user friendly way.
I'll def be back for the tater tots and a frank, just not with all my friends in tow... -

Love coming to this place-Staff is always down to earth and friendly. They've got some great beers on tap and hundreds more on bottle. Food prices are really good for what you get. People should never diss tater tots, especially when they're cheap and put just about anything you could think of on top.
Recommend the Green Monster Salad, always good, as well as the Turkey Club. Did I mention their hot dogs are amazing, too, huge, cheap and customized to order. Nuff. said. Go there!
FYI-Place is cash-only! -
Review from Jason H.

Note: I don't know much about beer so this is just about their non-alcohol experience.
The short: lousy food that is expensive for the quantity AND quality. Pleasant settings but nothing special. I guess you could take a date here if you're just looking for somewhere to drink besides your kitchen.
The longer: met up with some buddies to hang out, watch a hockey game, and eat some food. The reviews were pretty good online, and the photos looked appetizing. But unfortunately, that's not the case. The amount of toppings for the hot dogs was pretty generous. Lots of noodles or onions or whatever. I ordered my footlong for $7 and I got like 5 noodles. I'm not kidding. That's about 3 cents worth of noodle. And maybe 5-6 slices of onion. Totally a ripoff! Then we ordered a box of tater tots. They were hot, but they were pretty poorly flavored. They just dumped the flavor in the middle so about 6 tots had way too much flavor, and the rest were bland. And for $9, I would expect a hell of a lot more tots. Maybe the photos are from a time past when the portions were better?
One other problem was that the beer taps are so high they obscured the TVs. If I sat on the stool, watching the TV felt like looking through prison bars.
Lame food, high prices. How could I give them anything other than 2 stars? More than 1 star only because the place was clean.
Definitely not worth going back. -

I'm still a Lower Depths Loyalist, but on my last voyage here I felt like the beer prices were heading into Bukowskis territory. Sure, the place still has a great draught list, but the cheapest option is a $4 pint of PBR. This is higher than it used to be, and, for a cash-only establishment, I think they can do better.
The $1 Fenway Franks are still a bargain. I'll be really pissed if that price goes north.Listed in: Best Beer Selection
