Molokai is not where you go to see Hawaiian women shaking their asses and eat pig cooked in a pit.  It is known as the "most Hawaiian island".  So what does that mean?  Well, it's fairly poor for one.  It's also relatively uninhabited and there is one movie theater on the entire island (review to come).  And it is home to Molokai Ranch and Beach Resort which consists of a main lodge with traditional hotel rooms, restaurant, pool, etc., and the beach resort.  We stayed at the beach village at Kaopoa Beach, which meant an 8 mile drive down a windy, red dirt road to get to a small, quiet beach community.  The "tents", which were metal framed canvas structures sitting on wood platforms, came with their own private patios and lounge chairs,  comfy queen size beds, stocked coolers and light cotton robes which were perfect for sitting out in the aforementioned lounge chairs while sipping cocktails.  We fell asleep every night to the sound of the waves and crickets and woke up with the birds (OK... that was kind of annoying, but we got used to it about the day before we left for home).

The beach resort has a club house where they will supply you with beach towels, water, tea, juice and the only phone within 8 miles, not that you need it.  Because the staff will attend to your every desire.  We ordered dinner from the lodge one night and had it delivered down to the beach which was fun.  During the weekend they have buffets at the club house as well so we were able to sit on beach chairs and watch the sunset while enjoying our food, which was better than most food we experienced on the island, though nothing stellar (hence the missing 5th star).

All food originates from the Lodge, as do ridiculously foofy cocktails and traditional Hawaiian music (but only on Sunday nights... thank God).  The infinity pool is kept at a wonderfully balmy temperature and the ambiance of the entire place is relaxed and sleepy.  We didn't see what rooms at the Lodge were like, but other guests thought they were very nice when we inquired.  In other words, the perfect place to go for decompressing, sleeping, eating, drinking and generally goofing off.

Aloha!

I think I'm starting another trend--reviewing businesses that have gone kaput.  Molokai Ranch officially closed its doors not two weeks before Aloha Airlines said 'aloha'. The one & only time I stayed there was January of last year, and it was in one of the tents at the beach resort.  I compared it to high-class camping.  Main thing, we all had loads of fun and enjoyed everything the Ranch offered. Bad things tend to happen in 3's, so I wonder what my next review will be....
