Newport Beach, CA
picturesque location-- the restaurant is nestled between a lighthouse and the beautiful Maine coastline.
food-- lobster roll is a must. fried sea scallops were good. coleslaw is not heavily drenched in mayo, which is nice. clam chowder is not thick, but thin and more of a chicken soup consistency. tasty. strawberry rhubarb pie and maine blueberry pie were incredible! -

Well worth the out-of-the-way drive.
Great location on the water and delicious selection of food to choose from. -

Ended my Maine visit with lunch here yesterday. When I arrived at noon, there was a small line but things move quickly. You order at the counter then get your drink and wait for your number to be called. Yesterday was uber foggy and misty, so I opted for a table inside. Lobster roll was a bit small but delicious. I liked that the mayo was in a dollop on top, so I could remove a bit and only mix in a little. Meat was sweet and tender and not overcooked. Clam chowder was excellent - just the right consistency and a milky essence of clams with tender potatoes.
The place seemed to be full of tourists and well-heeled come-heres, and prices felt a bit steep but I found mid-coast Maine to be surprisingly expensive all around.
In summary, Two Lights is delicious seafood in a beautiful location. Grab a table inside or out, watch the waves crash on the rocks, listen to the foghorn and soak it in. -

Incredible location. Average food. Expensive. If you there, fine. But don't make the trip for it.

We were definitely lucky to be at the Lobster Shack about a half hour before it opened. The line to the door started forming 10 minutes before 11am!
The line moved decently quickly, and the menu is simple enough that you'll know what you want by the time you have time to order.
In late July, the market price for the lobster roll was $13, so we considered ourselves lucky, since we had seen a large range of prices all over the state.
I thought the Lobster Shack had really great tasting lobster. They let you choose how much mayo to add with their turned-over cup of mayo on top, so that's a nice way to control the mayo flavor. I liked the buttery roll, too. -

Of course, we'd heard about and read all the stellar reviews of this place. And it didn't disappoint. You know the location - gorgeous, oceanfront, sea spray, rocks, etc. Gorgeous. Let's get to the food.
I ordered a lobster roll and mini blueberry pie. The lobster, perched on a bed of iceberg lettuce and with a dollop of mayo on top within a toasted white bun, of course did not disappoint. I could've eaten two. The mini blueberry pie was anything but mini. I felt like a hoss, and hollowed out the shell to eat just the blueberry filling to make myself feel better about the massive dessert. It was a bit of a wait and my friend and I were getting antsy, but...for the quintessential lobster roll and Maine tourist experience, this is the place to go. -

It's a beautiful location at the end of a winding Maine road. Once you get there, it's a cute place to just walk around, check out the sights and a shop they have, and take some photos. The fried clams were delicious- whole fresh clams breaded and fried served with a great dipping sauce- awesome!!! Their lobster roll was good, a little small and simple, pretty good. I got their lobster which was very fresh (they literally grab one from the sink and plop it in boiling water right in front of you when you order).
I thought their COLESLAW WAS THE BEST THING!!! It had a sweet flavor to it, cold and crunchy- awesome- a MUST GET!! Their crinkle fries were just OK, and their fried onion rings too thin and oily. -

Flies were awful. Service slow. Slaw terrible. Fries soggy. Atmosphere was a 10. You didn't have to eat for the atmosphere. Food was great if your BMI was 40. Would never repeat.

Reviewers have been very generous toward The Lobster Shack. It sounds like an institution for anyone who is from Maine or has vacationed in Maine. At least four people recommended The Lobster Shack to me. Next time, I would love to entertain some new suggestions.
I understand the lure of the location, with view and coastal breezes, mixed with mouthwatering seafood, especially after the long drive or day at the beach. The setting is dreamy, however, this lobster roll, fries, chowder, and a lemonade will not fill you up. Are you willing to spend at least $25 to leave hungry? My wait has been minimal in the afternoon, during spring and fall, but I would be concerned on a hot summer night in July or August.
I love lobster rolls, but friends, the portion of this roll is embarrassing. It's a three biter. Come on Lobster Shack, you are a Maine institution, live up to the hype! -

TOURIST SPOT!
I gave my fair warning. When I went with my family we had to wait about 10minutes for a space to become available so we could park. Up the stairs, the horizon in the ocean comes into view. A beautiful location, I can't lie. But all the kids running around, the birds trying to get their share of meat, the loud speaker calling out numbers, and the way over priced food just kills the atmosphere.
Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't bad. However, I got the lobster roll, my mom a side of fried clams and my dad (mini) shrimp with french fries and our total came to $48! Extreme!
The clams were tender but a bit on the greasy side. My lobster roll was lobster chunks on a bun, a little lettuce with a giant glob of mayonnaise right on top (couldn't they at least mix it? at least people who aren't big fans of mayo can whip some off while leaving a little to still mix...but having to spread the mayo over my lobster with my finger...wasn't very fun) along with a slice of a pickle. I wish it was at least a spear to add to my lobster roll. I later learned with another lobster roll how good the pickle is with it. I enjoyed it, but I rather find somewhere else for my lobster roll.
BOTTOM LINE: Touristy, and over priced. Food is pretty good, but not worth the price. Wonderful views, but kids running around and the loud speaker kills the mood. -
Review from Eddie D.
What? They serve food here too?
Walk up the steps from the parking lot and the view to the Atlantic Ocean just hit you. Aligned with red wooden bench looking over the cliff is to die for.
Wait, we are here to eat. We got the giant fried scallop that melts in your mouth. Some juicy flaky fried haddock can't miss. Red buttery lobster stew is very smooth. Large chunks of clams in the clam chowder are excellent. Sorry, didn't get lobster roll here.
The line could be out the door very easy because there isn't any room inside where you place your order. They do have the menu outside so you could decide before you walk in. You could sit inside or the red wooden bench outside to enjoy the view and the food. -

5 Stars for location scenery and atmosphere.
5 Stars for the excellent crust on the seafood fry.
4 Stars for the tiny shrimp fry and tiny lobster roll.
4 Stars for them being out of scallops when I was jonesing for some hot scallops.
Overall its worth the visit. Some may say it a bit of a tourist trap, but the food and quality of how they cooked it was top notch. Get there noon and be prepared for a bit of a wait. No big deal, more time to take in the sea breeze and fog horn. -

Went around 12:30pm on a Friday afternoon. Pleasantly surprised to not find a humongous line. Ordered: Lobster dinner with fries, biscuit and coleslaw, lobster roll, fried clams, and new england clam chowder. All of them were the best of each I've ever had. Period. I could endlessly go on and on about each of their delectable qualities, but I fear it would just make me so mad about not having these food items in front of me. Just go eat them. Just go. Now.
Also, the view is effing amazing, quintessential maine. brought the dog along with us and he sat there sniffing at the lobster and looking at the boats in the water. After we were done eating, we went to explore the shore and work off some of the calories we just consumed...turned out to be fun as well. -

Another stop on my yelp across New England tour.
The Lobster Shack is an excellent, unpretentious place. The views of the Atlantic and the Two Lights lighthouse were simply gorgeous. I had the lobster roll boat and it was very good. I do have two comments to pass on:
1) too much mayo plopped on top of the lobster meat - my understanding of the perfect lobster roll is that the mayo is supposed to just lightly hold the pieces together and not over-power the taste of the lobster. This lobster roll was swimming in mayo sadly.
2) value for money - I thought at 14.99, the portion was quite small. Down in newport, rhode island at anthony's two days prior, I had a lobster roll almost twice the size for 2 bucks more and with much larger sides.
All in all, a very good meal and a million times better than anything I can eat out of Lake Ontario back home..I would go back here in a heartbeat.
Funny, a week ago, I had no clue what a lobster roll is - figured it was some sort of crazy east coast dance - fast forward a week and here I am rating them with the finest.. :) -
Review from Joanna F.
Really cool atmosphere and really fresh lobster roll, however I have to echo the other reviews that the appeal of spending over $13 for a fairly small lobster roll has lost its charm. The lobster roll was really good, but living in New England, I tend to have a lot of really good lobster rolls.
If the day was nicer, it would have been beautiful to sit outside. The view is picturesque. A definite plus. -

A perfectly lovely setting (on a cliff overlooking the water with beautiful lighthouses nearby), but the food's a bit over-rated and over-priced.
The lobster rolls are delicious but the size is stingy for the price. We also had a fried clam boat, which were good enough but not spectacular.
The service was speedy, and the counter staff were very nice.
Come for the great atmosphere, but be prepared to leave about $45 lighter on lunch for two, and possibly still hungry. -

New York, NY
Lobster Shack is on this really great end of the road / right on the cliffs location, with pretty amazing views and outdoor seating areas.
It is somewhat of a tourist destination, but even so it has some "worth checking out" qualities either way...
1) pretty big menu items, where you can get a lobster roll boat, or even a full platter of all kinds of seafood
2) fried clams in batter (mmmm)
3) two lighthouses nearby (touristy photo ops)
So its like 3.5 stars for me but since I would go again i'll say 4 stars. -

5 Stars for location and view
4 for Lobster Roll and fried clam strips (no longer offered- now whole clams only). The whoel lobsters are good, but I do not enjoy eating a lobster with plastic utensils - makes it too hard to get into those crevices.
3 for everything else...... but I love coming here. It is a very special spot. 'Been coming here for many years.... and the location always brightens my spirits-
especially the naturally carved (by the sea) stone steps that lead into the ocean.
Clean, friendly, and charming - with a spectacular view. -

The Maine Coast and the lobster are why you should stop for a meal at The Lobster Shack.
There was a line out the door to order, but it moved pretty quick. The tables are communal picnic tables that overlook the Maine Coast. I think my husband and I spent more time sitting on the rocks of the coast than at the table eating. It was just beautiful.
If you have the time, drive a little further to Fort Williams Park to see the Portland Headlight and another great view of the Maine Coast. -
Review from Eliza M.
As a native, I rarely head out to Two Lights for a lobster roll. I love lobster and love their lobster rolls, but can't justify spending $13 on one every time I crave lobstah. Which is often.
Let's be clear - this is what a lobster roll is, people. Yes, on a hot dog bun. Yes, served with some mayo on the side (not drowning out the poor lobster). Yes, grilled and buttery bun.
Of course it's a tourist destination - look at the views! And parking is difficult in peak season. The complaints on here about it being small, shack like, or outrageously expensive aren't justified. If you want cheap lobster, you are going to have to go down to the dock and buy one, steam it yourself, pick it, then put in on whatever kind of bun you want.
I always tell people that the lobster shack is worth a trip - for the view and the lobster alone. Good fried clams too. mmmmm Yum! -
Review from Andy C.
Perhaps my pally wally was awed by seeing the scenes of the Lobster Shack at Two Lights on an episode of Man Vs. Food. And perhaps it was because the lobster she got tasted better than the lobster I got on this particular day. Admittedly, this was still a very pleasant dining experience - but had my individual lobster been just a little bit better, and had the lobster roll had a smaller dollop of mayo, this place would be absolutely exceptional. Onwards.
Location: 3 out of 5
We were coming from Boston Logan. It took about 2 hours to get there. You get to see some interesting things, like the NH liquor outlets. It's 2 hours of relatively stress free driving once you get out of the 'metro' Boston area. There's really only one way to get to the coast of Cape Elizabeth. Once you're there, find Two Lights Road, and it'll be at the very end on the right hand side. They have a packed dirt parking lot for your convenience.
Scenery: 10 out of 5
Not to beat a dead "Sarah Jessica Parker" to death, but the scenery is gorgeous. I found it completely relaxing and tranquil to sit on the red picnic benches outside while watching the waves gently crash into the rocks below. There's a way to get down to the rocks. Just be careful, or you'll end up in the drink. The setting inside is what I imagine most restaurants in this part of the US look like - wood paneling, artwork featuring the sea and lighthouses, and a few ornamental lobster trapping supplies.
Price: 3 out of 5
Commensurate, if not a little pricier, than the rest of the lobster shacks I visited in the same week. For reference, I went here, Roy Moore in Rockport, Wood's in Plymouth, and Friendly Fisherman in Eastham. Lobster dinner was 20 bucks, added lobster was 10. Lobster roll was about 15, small order of fried clams was 14.
Customer Service: 4 out of 5
I thought everyone working there was above average when it came to being friendly and courteous. The one caveat is that on the day I went (Wednesday August 31), the credit card server was down. This may have been an artifact of Irene's damage, as there was an ice cream shop down the street that was experiencing the same problem. I surely don't fault them for things of this nature; I would have been bummed out had I only brought plastic, but luckily I did have some cash with me and I was able to pay the almost 80 dollar tab with my friend Mr. Jackson(s).
Quality of food: 4 out of 5
As I previously alluded to, my pally wally thought that this was the best lobster she ate all trip. I could tell that she liked it very much because usually when I upset her about something, she'll stop eating and just "clam up." Well, I was being mildly jerky to her for a few minutes after we ordered, and even though I could tell she was visibly getting impatient and irate with me, she consumed her food with the greatest of gusto! Good news for me, as her momentary wrath was alleviated by crustaceans. She claims, anecdotally, that the lobster here had the softest shell and she was able to open it easily. After reading about the differences between soft shell lobster and hard shell lobsters, she was convinced that this location served soft shell lobsters. All good and fine, except for the fact that I found my lobster to be average. Granted, average lobster is still better than the best steak (IMHO), so this was still very high up on the overall food hierarchy. I had an added bonus of having some roe in my particular bug, which was tasty and creamy. The lobster roll was novel, as others have pointed out that instead of mixing mayo with celery along with the lobster meat, this location uses an overly generous dollop of mayo just on one side. I mean - it's not that hard to mix it in, but it is just a heads up, especially to those who don't like a lot of mayo. Again - it was a very good lobster roll, but nothing that I would consider to be "the best" I've ever had. The fried clams were nice and hot, and I will admit that this location did a fine job of them. But pssst...in my opinion, Friendly Fisherman did a better job on their clams.
Overall: 4 out of 5
I think this location was at least fully successful in meeting my quest of going to Maine and having some lobster by the sea. I contend that had my individual lobster been cooked for just a few moments less, this would have been an excellent, near-flawless experience. Nonetheless, because of the scenery and the ambience, and above average level of customer service, I still recommend this place to any who are looking for some good eats in the Portland area. Be sure to check out the gift shop next door. -

We visited The Lobster Shack and here is our review:
According to her: half a star, wasn't a fan of the warm mayo. The tables were dirty. The lobster roll was underwhelming, the bun was cold, no lettuce either.
According to him: I waited in line for 20 minutes for less than average lobster roll. It consisted solely of knuckle meat and not a single claw was to be found The fried clams were tough with very large bellies. -

First of all, it's BYOB so stock up before you come! Order the lobster dinner, if it's not enough order a second lobster to share for half the price. The place is popular so parking can be tight.

I don't think I ever have to come back here again. The prices were high for what you get and the service was pretty non-existent. The view was really nice, but seeing as how I could stand outside and see the same view for free, this place just wasn't worth it.
The great reviews mustve gotten my hopes up. Maybe they were just having an off day, but it just wasn't worth it. -

Went on a friday afternoon in October. Long line, food was alright, but price wasn't really worth it. $14 for a lobster roll is a little much when its literally lobster with a glob of mayo on the side of it, not mixed in. Fried shrimp was excellent. The clam cake was good, but the strawberry rhubarb pie was amaizng!

This is the best place for Maine lobster in Portland. Great view of the ocean as well. Go here if you're visiting Portland. I have to admit that lobster is not my favorite shellfish (I prefer king crab) but this place highlights it by boiling it sea water and cooking it properly. I just think lobster is naturally tough, no matter how you cook it. Plus, there's no meat on them. You need to eat six of them to get full. The lobster dinner is around $20. I suggest you add an additional lobster for $11 because one won't do much. Maybe go with three. I'm serious. Oh, and their desserts are way too sweet. I'd pass.

Brace yourself for a long wait if it's summer. The lobster roll isn't ample, although it tasted fresh. The lobster roll at Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery is better. Beautiful location. BYOB.

Yes, it really is a shack. Yes, they have lobsters. The real winner here is the view. Honestly, it is a beautiful location. We had a group of 9 on a rainy night, so we all jammed inside the tiny shack and shoved some tables together.
Everyone in my group ordered the lobster dinner, but I opted for the lobster roll. It was delicious with huge chunks of lobster and a little dollop if mayo on top that was easily to remove if you swing that way. In my opinion, only a fool would remove the mayo and not work it through the lobster meat. I also had a side of fried clams. They were delicious. Chewy, tender, melt in your mouth goodness.
After dinner, we ordered a few different desserts to share. The whoopie pie was insane. The amount of frosting was 5 inches thick, but that thing rocked. You knew you were doing something naughty, but it was so worth it. We also shared the pecan pie and blueberry crumb which were both fair.
If you find yourself out on Cape Elizabeth, the Lobster Shack is a must do. Skip the cheesy gift shop. -

Sweet spot overlooking the water. For around $20 you can get a full lobster dinner including a steamed lobster, coleslaw, biscuits, and fries. You get the great atmosphere and view as an added bonus. Make sure you BYOB. Also, get the strawberry and rhubarb pie - it is delicious!

Review from Sara M.
3.5 stars, really.
This place reminds me of The Lobster Pool in MA since it is a shack with the water in the back.
First of all, the parking lot is a complete disaster so I suggest bypassing the first one and going to the back one because you will have better luck. People don't care that you are trying to back out to give you their spot, which is weird since they are slowing the whole process up! Seriously.
We waited in a not too long line to order up a clam chowder, lobster roll, lobster roll boat, and two drinks. There are a lot of people waiting for their food but they seem oblivious to everyone around them at the drink area. I had to sneak in quickly to just grab a straw!
Finally our food was ready and we ran outside to sit down away from everyone. It was a gorgeous day without being too hot. The clam chowder was good but a bit thin - not thick and creamy like most others. I realize this is their way of doing it. I love mayonnaise but for some reason, the big glob on top irritated me. I took about half of it off and tried to mix the rest in with the lobster. It was good as far as cold lobster rolls go and I think I just prefer warm meat. I enjoyed it and the view though.
I wouldn't come back since the novelty has worn off and I am sure I can get just as good of a lobster roll nearer to me in MA. -
Review from Bobby C.
Wow. I've had lobster before but never this fresh. Those lobsters must've been caught in the morning. They were lively when they were brought out in front of us before cooking.
We ordered lobster chowder which was creamy, buttery and perfectly seasoned, with chunks of fresh lobster meat in it. 2 buttered rolls for the lobsters, and 2 fresh 1 1/4- 1 1/2 pound lobsters.
The lobsters were hard shell and the meat was plentiful and sweet. ASK FOR HARD SHELL LOBSTERS. Thankfully this place had the courtesy to give it to us without us asking but it's not always the case. Also try squeezing some lemon juice on the lobster meat before dipping in butter. It gives the meat another dimension of flavor and makes it that much better.
The restaurant looked like a classic lobster shack, with wooden tables and benches, one tv with the Red Sox game on, and beautiful views of the water out of the windows. The doors are kept open to allow the cool Maine breeze to blow in off the water and it makes for quite an experience eating fresh lobster.
I strongly recommend. Great food, views and vibe. -

Excellent views, tough parking, good food. Loved the onion rings and the fresh fish sandwich. Don't go with the frozen, splurge. All cash so make sure you have enough. They take checks but never carried a check book in my life so never an option. Who carries blank checks now a days?

Lobster roll filled with the FRESHEST lobster I've ever had! Lobster was sweet and juicy. Huge dollop of heavy mayo...a little too heavy. they use very little seasoning so you can really savor the taste of the lobster. only they could get away with this b/c their lobster is so fresh. the bread wasn't that great either, but again the focus is the lobster!
lobster stew and clam chowder were bland and swimming in whole milk. ended up just eating the lobster. -

What a pig out...Seriously, I needed a shower I felt so ridiculous afterwards.
One regret: Instead of the Fisherman's Platter, I really should have opted for the lobster roll. It looked beautiful and I was mad I didn't get it.
The lobster stew was yummy, clam chowder very solid. The location was breathtakingly beautiful. -

I came to Maine on a beer run with the BF and a friend of his. While we were here we all agreed that we could not leave until we got some lobster. Someone recommended the lobster shack so we plugged it into the GPS and took the trip down to the coast. We ordered two lobsters and a lobster roll. I can honestly say that this was the best lobster that I have ever had in my life. I don't know if it was the freshness of the lobster or if it was water they were fished from but they were AMAZING! The flavor and the texture was unlike any of the lobsters that I've had in NY. And the view! Let me just say that you couldn't have had a more delicious lobster from a more casual restaurant with a more spectacular view. Come to the Lobster Shack, order lobster, eat outside and enjoy nature's awesomeness!
PS Watch out for the seagulls! -
Review from Kevin S.
No question here, that if the Lobster Shack was say....downtown Portland? No one would go there, unless they improved the presentation and food. Don't get me wrong, the seafood here is great, but the presentation....well, leaves a bit to be desired.
That said, I had the Lobster Roll Boat. They don't even make their own french fries? Ore Ida I think? Or probably whatever was on sale at Hannaford. Anyways, don't come here for the fries...and I don't like cole slaw...so I didn't even try it.
The lobster? I have to admit, there was a lot of it stuffed into that hot dog roll. The big blob of mayo on it didn't help, had to remove that. Should have asked for no mayo.
Lightly toasted bun....overall a decent Lobster roll. Was it worth $18? Probably not....
The location where this place is....well, that's why the Lobster Roll Boat costs $18. Because you are right there on the Atlantic. Loads of picnic tables (and some room inside their shack) make for one really nice view.
Just make sure you don't spill any food on yourself, or the seagulls will find you. And they aren't small either.
Parking is NUTS here. As in Boston, the first spot you see is the last spot you'll see. TAKE IT! You might even be able to make your own spot....just park in the middle.
Must be fun to be a neighbor of this place....hundreds of cars coming by just to get lunch/dinner.
I recommend a visit here, but don't judge the place solely on their food....or it's a 2-3 star review.
Service was "as fast as they could". Meaning the only way to make it faster is to hire more people, which they can't do because they only have so much room. ;)
Oh yeah, don't "freak out" with the 8 pm closing time (8:30 pm July/August). They will close once the last person in line has been served. Last night that was long after 8 pm. -

We ventured off here after reading about it on a blog. We were very excited as we drove down the road and noted that we were getting closer and closer to the ocean. Pulled up to a very busy parking lot, but had no problem getting a space right next to the ocean. Started off with a great view. Climbed the 10 or so stairs to the top and was greeted with a beautiful view of the ocean, lots of outdoor seating and a long line to order. We arrived around 7 o'clock, obviously in the height of dinner time, so a wait was to be expected. It took about 20 minutes until we were at the counter to order.
I ordered a lobster roll boat (includes fries and a side of cole slaw). Husband ordered a lobster dinner (includes fries and a side of cole slaw). Took a seat at one of the semi-clean picnic benches outside and enjoyed the view of the ocean as we waited for our number to be called over the speaker. Seemed to take about 20-30 minutes for our order to be ready.
Thoughts:
Lobster roll: clump of mayo on one side-good for me because I don't love mayo, was able to wipe most of it away. Lobster was cold and delicious. Just wish that there was more of it in the sandwich-seemed to be lacking a "rich" amount. Fries were fries and cole slaw was fine.
Lobster Dinner: lobster was not super hot to begin with. Either they let it sit when it comes out or something went wrong. However, the lobster was sweet and delicious. Husband even shared a few tastes with me, making me wish I would have ordered a lobster instead of the roll.
Good place for lobster and an amazing view. Be prepared to wait in line. Maybe bring some wipes for the table and some bug spray. Eat the lobster dinner and skip the lobster roll. -
Review from Lena N.
If you are only looking for a good lobster roll, you better keep on yelping because The Lobster Shack definitely is not it. Their lobster roll is overly expensive ($14 when we went) and was not impressive in any way. So save your money and go somewhere else.
The main attraction is the view that you get when you eat your food. There are red picnic tables along the shore so you get a gorgeous view of two lighthouses in the distance and the shore filled with crashing waves.
I'd recommend bringing your own food and having a picnic on the tables by the shore. While I was there, I saw people that had brought their own beer in a cooler, which I thought was absolutely genius. Overall, the view is worth the trip but the food is not.
