I go out of my way to get my fix here. Really, damn it... I knock people over to get a cab to take me here.... Yes, that's how much I want their grub, when I want it.... Poor guy working there has dealt with me a few times now, coming in at the last minute.... Really, I don't mean to, but you are toooo damn close to the Page, and could make a killing if you stayed open past 11pm... I'll drag them in at 1:30am- I promise...

Alas, they only stay open until 11pm, and I run up there with puppy dog eyes hoping they will serve me. It's not my fault... my cohorts are just now starting to appreciate the "before 11pm snack".
Even if they didn't offer effing PLANTAIN and black bean burritos.... I'd still harass them to let me pay them for whatever they still had on the grill.

But, they are still ever so pleasant and serve us anyway (now, you don't go rolling up there at the last minute.... don't cut yourself short of all they have to offer... and make me look like more of an asshole).

Not only is the food and salsa wonderful... the interior of this joint is cute, cute with all of the stained-glass and wooden dinning... oh, and some easy-on-the-eyes guys cooking up some yummin's.
And, if you didn't get your fill of elixir from the nearby bars.... they have some house-made margaritas... beer, and so on.

Dare I say that they need to become a CHAIN and make more people happy with their delightful fare.... Yes, I said it... and you all know that there are some chains that stared out as little places with groupies, like this little poochy.  Sooo, don't be surprised if you see others leg-humping this place... yes, it's that good.

This place is fantastic and offers REAL vegetarian food options that don't taste bland at all.

It's pretty tough to get a table which sucks and people give you dirty looks when you cut the line to pay for take out (like you're supposed to! calm down hipsters!), but the only major problem I have with it is that it's a bit expensive. I walked out last night paying over $17 for two vegan veggie burritos which really made me think a little bit.

Oh and the chipotle salsa is insane!

I was so excited when this place opened. I've been in the neighborhood a long time and have lived through all the other bad Mexican places that occupied this space. The worst was the one that was there back in 2000 called El Rico's or something like that. It was run by two middle eastern guys who used to make salsa with parsley instead of cilantro. I tried to talk to them about it a couple of times but they just shrugged me off. I even ran into one of the guys at K and J produce across the street one day and showed him a bunch of cilantro. I said, "Here, use this CILANTRO in your salsa, not PARSLEY. I would know, I AM LATINA!"

And he just looked at me like I was a crazy person. Oh well, I tried. And then there was Loco Taco which was a huge step up but not great. Around that time a great little joint had opened up in Lower Haight called Las Mesas so I would just go there. Loco Taco was average, but not great and I definitely never craved it.

And then the skies parted and god shone his heavenly light down to earth and blessed us with The Little Chihuahua. Contrary to it's silly name, they don't actually serve chihuahua meat there. Just Neiman Ranch Beef and Fulton Farms Chicken.

Everything on their menu is scrumptious, fresh and amazingly delicious. They are not super traditional Mexican, but they are still more Mex than Cali-Mex or Tex-Mex. How do I know? I brought my Mexican-food-snob-sister here and she loved it too.

When I'm in a veggie mood I order the plantain burrito (but in a bowl because flour tortillas are the devil when you're trying to keep your waist slim) but when I want meat I get the beef tacos. Nothing like that Bay Area hippie meat! Tastes great and is practically guilt-free!

I like their salsas but I don't LOVE them... same with their chips. I like that they have moved all the tables around to create more space, it gets quite crowded in there sometimes (don't go on a Friday or Saturday night!) The people who work the counter are always friendly, helpful and patient.  I highly recommend you give this place a try. And Rico guys, if you're out there reading this, you can shove some parsley in your poo-hole!

Don't know how I lived three blocks from this place for almost two years without going, especially when I would crave a burrito and dread having to make the trek to the Mission to satisfy it. Sustainable Mexican food seems to be all the rage in SF (really, a surprise?) and this place is hitting the sweet spot. My favorite Mexican place this side of Market.

The food. Enchiladas are great. Burritos are juicy and a healthy size. My Brazilian girlfriend is especially picky about her steak, beans, & rice, that being her staple meal back home, and she loves the enchiladas & burritos here. Definitely take two of their salsas to try with your meal. I go with the roasted tomato and the habanero (sparingly).

The place. It's a cozy little spot with a few 2-person tables, 1 4-person table, and a couple long, family style tables. Patrons are encouraged to sit down and get acquainted with their fellow Lower-Haighters, I believe. If you stay, you actually get to eat off of real plates with real silverware! Imagine... If you taking out, you may want to call ahead. It's a little bit of a longer wait than the average taqueria.

During Treasure Island Music Festival, I waited on line for the ferris wheel. I waited for a good hour, maybe more. I was with friends, and as we got closer and closer to the front of the line that there were 5 of us. 2 couples, and me. Each seat accommodated exactly 4 people. Yikes. The crushing reality that I would have to ride with strangers hit me and hit hard. I looked around, and there were nothing but drunken ne'erdowells around me, which normally I'm ok with in your typical bar setting where your exit strategies are clear and mutually agreed upon. No such luck. I would be trapped in a small rotating box with strangers. Possibly for several minutes. All I have is 5 minutes of interesting material. Tops. I'm from New York. I work in advertising. Oh really, wow- so interesting. Then nothing but a long devastating cold silence. Or so I anticipated.

I wound up riding with an older couple. The woman was part of the event planning committee for the Treasure Island music festival. She asked me if I was enjoying myself. The husband took pictures and wondered what neighbored I lived in in the city. I told her yes I enjoyed myself, and I told him I lived in lower haight. He said the best burrito in the city was in the lower haight, and we simultaneously blurted out "Little Chihuahua on Divis!" And then- he preceded to blow my mind. He said they best burrito wasn't even on the menu. He said go in and order plantains and black beans. Depending on who's working, they may or may not make it for you, but if you can convince them to- it'll be the best burrito you've ever had.

The man on the ferris wheel was right.

Mmmm. I have now found the spot for that post-night-of-drinking brunch in this 'hood. Who knew that we would actually beat the crowds by going at noon on a Sunday??? Guess we were actually getting an earlier start to the day than most (by 1pm, the place was packed).

I had the breakfast tacos. Completely hit the spot. And even more perfect with some of the great salsas they have to choose from.

Almost looking forward to my next hangover!

This is a great Americanized/Non-Mexican burrito joint.  Hands down.

You order at the counter and try to find a seat.  My ONLY complaint is the seating and how busy it gets.  And it's a pretty small place, yo.
NOTE:  Not a good place for a big group.  So, don't come here with your ultimate frisbee homies after a big game and sit and chat for two hours over empty plates.  NOT COOL.
BUT, it's not Little Chihuahua's fault they are so busy.  Well, maybe, because they are so damn good.
But sometimes you have to sit with some weirdos at the shared bigger tables which is not always fun.  I have also almost gotten into altercations with people over tables. (NOT my fault by the way....)

Their food is amazing and always fresh.  The staff is always really, cheery, and friendly.

My new burrito-du-jour that I eat almost once a week would be the half wild mushroom/ half carne asada on spinach or tomato tortilla.  (Thanks to Austin's recommendation!)  SO GOOD.

Also, just recently tried the tostada salad thing for the first time in my life.  So worth the $10 or whatever it was.

YUM.

It automatically gets two stars for serving organic, local and sustainable meats and veggies.

Major Wins:
    * Meats marinated in the same way as the whole in the wall taqueries would do it. However, the cows ate grass, the chickens roamed free and the pigs lived the life a pig would enjoy =op
     * They offer beer, sangria as well as homemade Horchata
     * It's taqueria style (order at the counter), but you can stay and dine

Great alternative when Nopalito tells you there's a 2.5 hour wait!!

The other day I had a burrito craving and was driven by extreme laziness to the taqueria around the corner instead of walking the extra few blocks to Little Chihuahua.  And upon first bite immediately regretted my decision.

Because really, very few taquerias can measure up to Little Chihuhaua in my book (even if for some reason I seem to have a horrible time trying to pronounce and/or spell it).  It's definitely my favorite burrito place in the area, if not the entire city.  I've even stood and waited for long periods of time just for the $3 tacos they offer on Divisadero Art Walk nights when the entire city seems to have crowded into the restaurant (with an agave marguerita in hand to take the edge off, of course).

I can't speak for their meat, but all of their vegetarian options are delicious.  And they have a good variety, with both roasted veggie and wild mushroom tacos, as well as the usual vegetarian burritos, etc.  And OhMyGod, and the Plantain Burrito.  I've never seen this on a menu anywhere else, and let me tell you, it is like a spicy, starchy chunk of heaven.  My only complaint is that I can never finish it but always stubbornly try to because it's so good... and then inevitably feel sick.  But if you have enough self-restraint to save half for later (or just a very hearty appetite), do yourself a favor and order the plantain burrito.

I'm pretty boring though and almost always order their baby bean & rice burrito, spicy, with guacamole, and am never disappointed.  The "baby" part of the description is a bit misleading, it's enough food to always make me feel extremely full if I eat the entire thing, which of course I always do (see above).  And this is probably the only place where I actually order guacamole instead of avocado on my burrito, because it's just so damn good, with just the right amount of spice and a healthy dose of lemon... or is it lime?

The salsa bar is always stocked with a lovey array, which range from mild pico de guao to the ultra-spicy (and also a bit lemony) habenero.  And they keep the plastic containers at the salsa bar so you can totally pig out on the salsa and not have to feel like a douche asking for 10 containers at the counter.  Only drawback:  they don't stock limes at the salsa bar, so those you do have to ask for.

And did I mention the agave marguaritas?   Yum.  They may be sadly devoid of tequila, but they are deliciously orange-y and simply must be tried.

6 words: Black Bean and Fried Plantain Burrito.  Delicious.  My only couple knocks on my several times there are:
1) can get quite crowded and hard to find a place to sit
2) the consistency of the plantains seems to waiver - ie: sometimes they're soft, browner and sweeter, sometimes they're harder, whiter/yellower and blander
Overall though, good vibe, friendly peeps, good aesthetic but definitely in need of a larger space!!  :)

The other night we were on our way to a place nearby, (yes, shame-shame!) BUT when I passed by the Chihuahua I just HAD to stick my nose in there and then grab a business card. I know a good place when I see one, just like cafes :-}
So tonight 4 of us headed over and .... drum roll...
LOVED the HELL outa DIS place!!!

The gluten free items on the menu were a total bonus, and that their meat is "Organic" (gotta love that term, like what else is meat? -Synthetic? Not yet).
So, Salmon Taco's, very yummy, Fried Plantain, HOLY COW ! best I've had in ages, Black Bean re-fry, nummmies. We didn't need any alcohol here, the atmosphere was so festive and the food so good I was in my own happy bubble for the rest of the eve.

Yo quiero Poquito Chihuaha ! Pronto!
arf!

I eat here just about every week.  My favorite is the steak burrito, but I can be picky: I don't like pico and would rather have more salsa; I want it "super" with sour cream and cheese, but hold the guac.   They get it right every time and don't look annoyed even when it's busy, which I appreciate a lot.  Always good to have a few beers on tap too.

I can also vouch for the steak tacos (which I prefer sans cabbage), the plump chicken quesadillas, the shrimp tacos, and the variety of distinct salsas.

My only minor complaint is that sometimes the chips are stale.

dearest Little Huahua:

My favorite date night involves your super-baby carne asada burrito, paired with a six-pack from across the street, enjoyed at home while watching the Wire or Mad Men.  Sheer bliss.

I love how the "super" part of the burrito means I get all the toppings, and the "baby" part means I can actually consume the whole thing - although it's still pretty big.  Your shrimp quesadillas also do me right, and my man is partial to your steak salad.

I also like how you offer me bottled mexican-style coke, and how you accommodate my cilantro aversion.  And of course, your high quality products make me feel A-ok about eating meat & shrimp.

Thanks for being so reliably delicious and close to my home!

After an afternoon of absorbing the lively atmosphere on Haight Street, we were at a loss of where to eat for dinner.  My friend pulled out her itouch to seek help.  Luckily, fellow Yelpers directed us to the Little Chihuahua.  We both tried the specialty burritos; she the fried plantain and I the garlic shrimp.  The burritos were a pleasant change from the usual Americanized Mexican fare, where variety only meant switching up the type of meat and beans in our burritos.  Although the restaurant was crowded and bustling, we had enough elbow room and were still able to have a conversation without raising our voices.  The only complaint I had was that the chips were slightly stale, but slathering it in the delicious salsas concealed the staleness, and all was well.

Food:

(I tried brunch here one lazy, hungover day.....)

Free chips and salsa ++
GOOD salsa with a lot of varieties that actually taste different ++
French toast fried tortillas with bacon and fried plantains....  I was so dubious.  SO dubious.  But let me tell you - it's worth it.  Take the plunge.  You'll never regret it.
Ask for a side of bacon?  You'll get a huge bowl of it.  Greasy, not over-cooked, thick sliced goodness.  Don't bother asking for a side of potatoes, if you order the french toast you won't need them.

Service:

Friendly, fast, but it's mostly do it yourself (get your own napkins, silverware, water).  Can't complain.

YUM! I just had mind blown here for the second time last night!

The Plantain & Black Bean Burrito is the best vegetarian burrito I have ever put in and around my mouth!

The sweetness of the the plantains and the meaty texture of the fruit are divine with the spicy beans and salsa. If you are anything like me you put a jalapeno on every bite, belisimo! I rarely am able to eat all of my burrito but I tore that mofo up!

The restaurant is currently going under a renovation to make the seating more efficient but that doesn't keep people away. I called and placed a pick up order and got a busy signal the on the first try. The second try i had to wait awhile to get someone to pick up, but no worries that's just how busy they are. They still had my food promptly ready within 10 minutes. When I arrived to pick up the food MAN they were PACKED! It was definitely a happy sight to see since so many other businesses are empty.

I want to come back and try the chiliqueles & the Mexican French Toast. They do brunch from 11-2 Mon - Fri :-D

I will be back again soon, and maybe to give that 5th star!

I'm conflicted. There is nothing wrong with this place. I mean the staff are very nice, the food is fresh and drinks arent expensive. Its just that every time I come here I'm just not all that pumped up about what I'm eating. I have eaten here probably..6 times?

I've had the chicken burrito-GCK'S chicken is 10x better and the flavors just werent right to me. I had the brunch tacos, which were crazy crunchy (not the good kind) while my potatoes were not spiced at all and the bfs were over over spiced. Recently, I had the garlic, shrimp burrito, which again, while not bad, lacked oomph and did not provide me with much excitement.

I like their ideas and the place is cute, its just that food-wise, I think there are better options for this kind of food. At least for MY taste buds--a lot of my friends really like it.

Not sure what the hubub is all about.  The Little Chihuahua is solid and the ingredients they us are fresh - which is key to great Mexican (or for that matter, any) food.

It offers a San Francisco twist on Mexican food.  Which means, in part, that they use Nimen Ranch meats (didn't they go bankrupt?) and Rocky Range chickens, and organic vegetables.  So if that's important to you, then I suspect this place would merit an extra star or two because there aren't too many Mexican joints in town that do that.

But don't be fooled - it ain't authentic.  My tostada salad was made with, so far as I could tell, little gem lettuce.  Nothing against little gem lettuce, but it's got no place in a tostada.  My girlfriend's carne asada quesadilla was quite good, but again, nothing that you can't find at many other spots around the city.  I got the sense that, when they get busy, quality suffers a bit.  For example, the steak in the quesadilla was overcooked and dry.  But we went on Halloween (albeit on the early side) so I understand.

I suspect that all of the five-star reviews are from people who live in the area and for whom this is a neighborhood favorite.  And I totally get it.  I've got a Mexican place near me and the only people who frequent it are the meth heads from over on 6th.  I'd be psyched if there was a good one near me.  If you're not walking distance from The Little Chihuahua, though, and don't see your friends and neighbors here, there are better choices in town for Mexican fare.

This place has made a couple changes that have made it even more awesome!!!

1) They've rearranged/added more seating. This has helped open up the front of the restaurant so you don't feel crammed in when your waiting for takeout orders.

2) They've added a second register for people picking up takeout orders. This is extremely helpful!!! Before, you had the choice of waiting in line with everyone else, which could sometimes take up to ten minutes even though your order was ready or just cut to the front of line and have to deal with dirty looks and under-there-breath obscenities from other patrons.

I also finally got to try a breakfast burrito from here and it was AWESOME!!!!

After watching the Dodgers win the NLDS by sweeping the Cardinals at a nearby bar, it was time for some real food.  Mexican sounded just right, so my friend and I walked over to this place.  Good call, Ronnie.

I had my heat set on a good ol' fashioned combo meal, and I wasn't disappointed here. 2 chicken enchiladas, rice and some black beans to more specific.  The food was flavorful and the serving size was ample.  I also had a horchata....muy bien.

The place isn't too big, only a few tables, but it's nice and tidy.  The staff was friendly, and the food came out quick.

I'm a fan.

So we've been back maybe ten times since this last review was written. And although I have tried to expand what I eat there, I am always drawn back to something containing plantains (which they will reluctantly put on other things besides the burritos).

But, although the price is a little higher than say El Toro, the food is better quality. Totally worth it.

These guys really take their food seriously, and want you to like it. The service (which is why you are paying more here than CanCun for example), is exemplary. It's pretty hands-off until you have a problem, then they are right there to help. An all-around great place!

My 1,100th review and my 2,000th burrito.

(Not lying either, plus like my Met-Life blimp-like body shock many of you).

This is also true, I'm also recording all my burritos and trips to every taqueria I've been to. Chalk up another taqueria visit, because this is my first time to Little Chihuahua for a place I've heard that they make a Plantain Burrito. For a somewhat Burrito-enthusiast like myself and recent obsession with Plantain Bananas on almost anything, I was enticed to try the unique burrito.

For $7.95+ tax, I get the usual filling that I find in a standard burrito. But instead of the meat, I get the Archipelago sweetness in my "silver-bullet". I'm used to burritos with meat-overload, but the sweetness of the Plantain tasted awkward with the other key ingredients. Don't get me wrong, but I think the restaurant has created a great burrito for other people. But for a burrito-lover like myself, I might pass on this special burrito.

Just like any little Chihuahua(dog), this is a very cute place with limited seatings, in which I'll be back and try other foods. But I'll definitely skip the Plantain Burrito.

Not necessarily that most authentic mexican place; although I do come from southern California where there is authenticity everywhere, this place was a pretty good find. First trip had the shrimp burrito which I loved, more of a modernized burrito but damn good. The second trip I had two carnitas tacos that were mammoth. I am used to ones I can finish in three bites tops. These were basically an open burrito. They were ok, but I think next time I will just stick with their burritos.

Also, my friend and I took our food into The Page (bar next door) and ate our food in the lower pool table area. Ordered ourselves a beer and had a nice, quite meal. We did this mainly because there is not very much seating in The Little Chihuahua. All in all, pretty good mexican food for the Bay Area. Since I live within a 5 minute walk, I will be back.

On one of those nights, after one of those weeks, I finally tried this place out on a night I was just too freaking tired to rummage through my pantry and make myself dinner.  My pure lack of enthusiasm for cooking that night had an excellent reward when I decided to pick up a burrito from The Little Chihuahua.

I only got take out, but it was great.  I had the plantain burrito which was delicious! I was a little nervous about trying a burrito which I had never seen on a menu, but I will definitely be back for another! It was original, huge and delicious! I would highly recommend it.  I'm a vegetarian and it is not all that often that I get to be too experimental in my food choices when I eat out, but this was a great opportunity to do so!

The restaurant is pretty small so I'm sure it fills up fast but the staff was courteous and fast and I will definitely be back to eat in!

Bottom line:
-street parking is probably somewhat of a pain
-fair prices ($16 for 2 huge burritos)
-delicious plantain burrito
-great for a night when you just aren't in the mood to cook!

Basic Mexican in a small semi-self-service enviroment. As a :"light" dinner before my red-eye back to NYC, we shared 2 beef burrito bigger than my head, an order of fresh-made guac and two juicy pork tacos filled with cilantro and other tasty green things.

Thank god my stretchy pants were able to conceal my subsequent food baby...otherwise the flight attendants might have thought I was pregnant, and made me give up my exit-row seat.

i feel very lucky to live a block away from this place. It is great for high quality, fresh, gringo mexican food. their wild mushroom tacos are delicious! they also have a tasty brunch menu- which is great for lazy weekends when the first meal of the day invariably starts after noon.

my two objections are that it's a little on the expensive side, and it can be hard to get a table. overall though, an awesome spot.

The Little Chihuahua was pretty good, the dishes we all ordered were the salmon tacos, fried plantain and black bean burrito, and the chicken tostada, all which were good. I want to go back to try the brunch specials.

Yippie, I have finally found a Mexican joint I actually love!!! This little innovative Taqueria gets kudos for having not only many vegetarian options, but a plantain burrito...I had dreams about this burrito!
Also, the chips were warm and tasty!  My bf had the enchilada and he loved it, but the only thing he said it was missing was sour cream and salsa.  Overall though, the food was great tasting and fresh.  I will be back there very soon!

I was here a while back when it was under a different owner and it wasn't as good as it is now! This place was packed at about 8pm on a Friday night but the turnover was pretty quick. As we waited in line all the seats were taken and by the time we ordered and got a number a few seats had opened up. The salsa bar can use a little updating or rather more options but i cant complain.

I had the salmon taco and a shrimp taco and wow they were good. The food is so much better now then it was awhile back, they even changed the decor. Last time i was here it was red and had a funky paint scheme going on inside. Almost like a bad taco shop in Mexico. The salmon taco was cooked perfectly. It was slightly blackened so it was easier to eat then the ones that are barely cooked and fall apart as your trying to eat. The shrimp taco was great and it had this really nice sauce that made it o so good. Follow it up with a cheap beer and it was prefect meal before a night of drinking. Not too heavy but filling.

I am SO happy this place is now open until 11.  Finally, delicious legitimate burritos within foggy-windy-walking-radius (not to be confused with beautiful-SF-day-walking-radius, which is much much larger) from home.

I have to say, Little Chihuahua beats out the competition (Papalote) in authenticity, tastiness, and price.  It's hard to beat that crazy orange salsa though, so it's not over yet Papalote.

This place seemed to have really good ingredients but my super shrimp burrito just didn't come together that well and cost over $10. The avocado was fresh, the beans and rice were well done, ample salsa and sour cream but -- it just came out average. Maybe I'm jaded from living really close to the Mission my whole life. (Not to say that the Mission is the only place for a good burrito, Ocean Taqueria is surprisingly delicious, albeit overpriced.)

If I could, I'd give them an extra half star for having really fresh-tasting horchata (probably made with real, not-from-goop rice)

The carnitas here are fantastic.  So is the salsa bar, and the tortilla soup, and the nachos.  The decor is pleasant and the tables can be moved around with a little effort if you have a big group.  It does get really crowded at dinner time on a weekend, so try to avoid coming during that time.  Takeout available so call ahead and save the waiting.  Cheep beer on tap is a plus, too.  Lovely neighborhood spot as a fancier alternative to the nearby taquerias.

I love this place but never could remember the name until just recently. This place has the best tortilla soup. It hits the spot every darn time I come here. Again not 5 stars worthy due to lack of seating on a weekend night. Sometimes you have to stand and wait for a table for 30 minutes. No fun.

I say come on a weekday or order to go. Yummy salsas and chips too if you are into that kind of thing.
