I love this place and go here at least once a month (to this location or the location near North Star Mall.)
The beer is great, the decorum is great, and the food is phenomenal.
All the stews are great, my husband loves the bangers and mash,
Also the sides that are the best: bubbles and squeak, sugar snap peas, and the fried mushrooms.
The onion petals are the best "bloomin' onion" type appetizer I have ever had!.
Best of all its great for most adult type groups.
So yesterday was a huge day for Soccer.. Alot of the World Cup games where yesterday.. So I knew I had to work in SA. But I needed to find a place to watch the games! I have seen games in here before and I know people come in here to watch games all the time. But dont get me wrong when I say this.. Being From Austin, and being a huge Longhorn Fan, the USA national team was playing. Every TV in the bar was broadcasting the Longhorn game and only one screen behind the bar as playing the USA game. It just really urked me wrong. I love the longhorns and hold tickets for alot of their games but this is our NATIONAL TEAM! So I was really let down on the fact they couldnt atleast have two TV's playing the game. They didnt play any of the other games and broadcasted the Mexico game afterwards. Which was fine but missed over 8 games that day. Regardless, this is my personal pfft and has nothing to do with the bar.
On the flip side, loved my blonde lil waitress - She was sassy and gave me a hard time and said she hated me because I lived in Dallas.. hehe but I knew she meant in a sassy way. She made my night and served me great small bite size burgers with some great service! I was really impressed with the food and LOVE the bar, it was really layed out well and has a very comfortable seating area. I would come back here regardless, if they didnt play all the games. So dont get me wrong, I love this place.. friendly people, awesome huge bar area and placed in a secretive area that makes it feel more like a hidden hole in the wall.. So I will be returning and im sorry for the lack of being excited about playing more soccer games. I just got off the road from driving 5 hours and being told you are only playing the USA game was a huge bummer for me :(

this is definitely one of my favorite places to go watch sports. I'm a soccer fan and I love being around other soccer fans when I'm watching it and this is the beat place to do that. this location definitely fulfills it's "pub" status. I went the other night to watch one of the USA qualifying match. after they won the whole bar erupted in the "star spangled banner". I don't think I've seen so much lie for the USA soccer team. it was great.
$5.00 New Castles keep this awesome place from being 5 star worthy. I will definitely come back regardless. Great atmosphere, great food. Oh and the music isn't too loud, the lighting not overpowering, and the crowd isn't out of control(even though they secretly are ;) )
Just like an English pub - inedible food and service that makes you wish you could do it yourself. Just as in England, don't tip.

I liked this place a lot.I only drank there a few times but i always had fun.
As an out-of-towner, this bar was recommended to my friend and me by our cab driver. I'm a huge fan of Pubs, and this one did me well.
We met some regulars sitting at the bar that were very friendly, and we all played a few games of darts together.
The beer selection is great!!! And although we didn't order food, the meals I saw being served looked delicious.
I was in San Antonio for a just a few days, and the time spent here was the best time I had. Period.

This had to be one of the best bars I have been to in a very long time. We also happen to have one of the worst servers ever! She only stopped by to ask us for for drinks 3 times in 3 hrs. Maybe she was having a bad night because she never smiled either.
The bar was very clean and didn't have that stale beer and cig smell. You can sit at the bar, high tops or booths. All the TV's were featuring sporting events, while we played Geeks who Drink... (I will review that separately).
We ordered several appetizers- bacon wrapped shrimp (only 4 on the plate), chicken tenders and onion petals. Everything was very tasty and I didn't feel like I just inhaled 10K calories. The dips that came with everything was soooo good. I don't know if they spike their honey mustard, but I could have licked the damn plate.
Since I just ate a weeks worth of calories, I opted for the "sugar free" red-bull and vodka. If this place wasn't good enough, having SFRB alone warrant's 5 stars. They had about 20 ales on tap and a full bar. The entire vibe was great. We kept chatting with people at the next table. This is one of the best times I have had living in San Antonio...
I will be back again... you can bet your ass on it!

Ok, so I've been here before but didn't review (although I thought I had, I just saw that I hadn't... oh well). Went here on the 30th and met up with Jamie B. and her bad@ss group of derby girls for Geeks Who Drink (sans Ms. Kimmie!!! *tear*) I didn't order anything except a Coke but I know that their apps are REALLY good! The fried onion petals and the dip, sweet potato fries and the hot wings are SO yummy. And the bangers and mash with mustard... ooohhhh
Plenty of seating (even with the crowd) and of course the atmosphere is always nice. Jamie did make a point though - the waitress was a bit on the slow side. Even when we were trying to check out. Despite that, a good time was had by all.

This is a really cool bar in that you get to watch watch rugby and soccer instead of American football while you eat/drink. I really liked the fact that they have Belhaven Scottish Ale on tap, and just so you know, Smithwicks may be made by Guinness, but it's an English beer, and us Scotts refuse whenever its convenient to drink their stuff...
The establishment is very clean, they have an English pool table and this location is by far the most "authentic" looking one with a stone entrance down a mini alley.
The food is pretty good, make sure you get the bubbles n squeak, and try and stick to the British menu.
Don't go to Pubs for Dessert.
Slainte Mhath!

We went there to sample there fare, but found that the service to be outstanding. This has to be one of the best bars I have ever been too in San Antonio.
The bar it's self is well maintained and clean I, while there is smoking allowed, most of it come from cigars. The have good music and bar games to enjoy. Also the food was great, we plan going back again.

My wife and I had a pretty decent experience at The Lion & Rose. We decided to visit at lunch, when there was very little crowd. I found it mildly unwelcoming that the non-smokers were ushered into a tiny room nicknamed the dungeon, but it is a pub after all, and if the majority of their patrons smoke, then I reckon that makes sense.
I can't comment on authenticity here, since I've never been to England. However, I didn't find it cheesy or silly or trite in the least. In fact, I thought the atmosphere was quite acceptable, and I enjoyed watching Wimbledon while we were there.
As for the food, it was good! We started with the Scotch eggs; they were a little oily, but the taste was nice. I got a Smithwick's to drink -- typically my ale of choice -- but my wife couldn't make a decision. The staffperson helpfully recommended one of their beer samplers, which let her try five ounces each of five different brews. The sampler was a little expensive, but it was fun! We went on to enjoy the Picadilly Pasties as our main entree, with bubble and squeak and chips for sides. Good food all the way through!
For dessert, we had to try the Guinness chocolate ice cream. I do have to say that one was overrated. For $5 you do get a really large bowl of the stuff. In the end, though, it's just chocolate ice cream. If you eat enough of it, you /kind/ of get a /little/ taste of /something/ that's not chocolate in the back of your mouth. I can only guess that's the Guinness. Save your money and go down the street to Marble Slab, or try something else.
Bottom line, we'd definitely go back. It wasn't nearly as froofy as I'd expected after finding out they'd just opened franchises out at Stone Oak and The Rim -- parts of San Antonio I find really distasteful and lame. I still like Waxy O'Connor's better, but The Lion & Rose wasn't bad!

Any bar that showed the rugby world cup games at 8 a.m. gets a high rating from me. Breakfast and beer go well with a good ruck and maul. The local ruggers (San Antonio Rugby Club) hang out here a lot, and the place has a good menu and a lot of beer. Mmmm, beer.
