Laughing Goat.  The semi-replacement of the beloved Penny Lane.

In reality its a wonderful coffee house.  Their coffee is superb, the ambiance is lovely, the barista's are friendly and talented, the patrons are hip, and even the music is good.

It must be hard for the poor Laughing Goat to live in the shadow of Penny Lane with all of its classic, grungy, O.G. Boulder hippies, and super weird art and decor. But i think that they have done a wonderful job replacing the much needed local coffee house on east pearl.

Laughing Goat, you are a perfect addition.  Thank goodness you came along when you did.

Pretty typical university cafe hangout with convo on environmental fuels and the like. I can't speak for the coffee. Every other table was occupied by a wireless-bandwidth hogging youngster. Bookshelf on the back wall contains some reading material, and bathrooms are clean. I think they run their own coffee brands.

Too bad I didn't get to experience Penny Lane.

I went here yesterday on my way to work and I really liked it.  The guy at the counter new everyone's name and order, and greeted them all with "mornin' Nancy, nonfat latte this morning?" It was so nice.

Being a newbie, when  I got to the register, he didn't know me but said "good morning Hun, what can I get you?"

And he didn't call me Hun in a creepy, gross way, but It a warm, nice guy kinda way.

I had a large coffee and a day-old blueberry scone (that was delicious and in no way tasted old) for $3.30.

Since I had some time to spare I sat for a while and watched people come and go.  The ambiance is really nice- artsy but not too artsy, classic coffee shop but not too classic, friendly and warm but not too much.  I'll definitely be back!

The only problem with The Laughing Goat is that it is not the cleanest of places.  You are supposed bus your own table...some people do this, many don't.  And the staff don't seem to make it around to wipe up the crumbs very often, so the place is full of flies.  But if you're looking for sterile, there's always Starbucks, right?

And finally, one of the most important things for an internet cafe- the Laughing Goat has a ton of outlets available!  Old laptop users rejoice!!

The Good:
Excellent atmosphere, good people--even those having conversations and not just looking at Zappos or reading TMZ online. The open-air store front is really relaxing and the barristas engage you in a nice way

The Bad:
$2.25 for a tea is ridiculous. I'm sure the rent is high, but that's too much. I'll pay almost anything for an industria- grade, professionally brewed coffee, but that's too much. I know the price comes with the amenities of the shop, but please. A monkey with a tambourine can place a tea bag in a hot cup of water. This tea isn't special--lower the price.

The Goat's coffee is very good because it's roasted by Kaladi (but would be better if it was brewed more carefully) and their quiche is outstanding because it's made by Spruce Confections. Good atmosphere for hanging out and taking in the sights on the street. Nice guys own it and are usually around during the day to keep the vibe special. They support community artists of all kinds and sponsor the Fringe Festival - all around a great Boulder coffeehouse.

This depressing hole of self-ashmed losers displays Boulder's decline. Long ago, there was "Penny Lane", where hot, underground hipster babes would do art.

The Laughing goat is unhappy people on mac laptops. Yes, go there and you will see: lonely people on mac laptops. That isn't life.

The Laughing Goat....nothing can replace Penny Lane, actually.

If you know Boulder, home of pseudo hippies and trustifarians, you know Penny Lane--premiere coffee shop/open mic sport for the like (not to discredit-- it truly was epic)..but, sadly...no more.  And, what has come in its place?  The Laughing Goat.  Catering to the same crowd in a replacement kind of way, but also appealing to hipster/death metal sensibility, somehow.

I think the staff have great taste in music (with the exception of They Might Be Giants but I Will  excuse that mistake).  Anyone who plays The Islands melts my heart.

Coffee is good. Interior design is better.  Lighting, even better still!  (Of most importance!)  Great tables and booths.  You might even pick up someone here.  Many new faces as far as I'm concerned.  Always (fresh?) new artwork dusting the walls (even if it was created in Boulder).    The only thing...last fall there were serious flies.  (I cannot deal!)  Luckily...it is dead-frozen winter now.

Locally roasted, yes.  Organic, YES!!!.  Amazing amounts of crema on my Americano, YES!  Can they make soy milk froth into a glorious cloud for my Macchiato?  YES!  The Goat has an eclectic, friendly staff and an owner who never stops smiling.  Community-supporting and community-supported.  Check out the Open Mike Night and all of the great shows in between.
