Fun, challenging, pretty well maintained, affordable, good morning getaway!

We love this place.

Only caveat being this place is ALWAYS backed up. I think they may stack the tee times 2 minutes apart because if you are playing at pace, you are going to be waiting on the group ahead, or pairing yourselves up - guaranteed! Lot's of learning golf on the course - so this tends to slow things up a bit, but still challenging enough for someone who knows how to play, but isn't necessarily a scratch golfer.

Great place for beginners or more advance that just wants to work on your short game.  Good for afternoon or early evening round during the summer and very cheap too.

Only thing is they don't regulate it very well so it gets backed up pretty easily.

Haven't played on the course itself, but I am in LOVE with the driving range. It's 2 tier (level), well-lit, has a fairly large putting area with a sand trap, is relatively cheap ($8 for 100 balls), and on the occasion, you get to see the cute little foxes in the way back of the range. The guys at the front desk aren't douchey like some of the other guys at different golf courses, and it's close by Plaza El Segundo, which is a plus for me because Melt is located in it. Yummm, gelato after the driving range.

I am a huge fan of The Lakes!!  What a great place.  An executive golf course close to home.

OK, there are a lot of beginners.  OK, it can take some time to play.  But for $11, the conditions are great!

The driving range is also a great time.  There are good mats and real grass to hit into.  Too they have added distance signs, and other netted objects to shoot for.

To add to this, there is beer/wine available from the restaurant.  Ask for a cooler, and you can take them on the course.  Or a plastic cup and you can hit the range.

Done with golf?  Go back inside for a bite, beer, and watch some golf.  Or there is a great patio with great furniture to kick back in.

Very cute 9-hole course near LAX and 15 minutes from the westside.

Well-maintained with professional and friendly staff, great driving range and putting green (with practice sand trap!), outdoor cafe and huge parking lot.

Much better pace than Rancho, especially on the weekends. It took us just under one and a half hours to play on a Sunday with a foursome (tee time 11:15am). A cart isn't necessary for such a small course but they have plenty available for those that want 'em.

Went to the driving range in the evening.

There was a rotten smell by the ball dispenser machine. yuck.

The 2 leveled range was interesting, there were a few instructors there, they have signs up...dunno how you get lessons, maybe you just approach them at their sign?

I didn't like it as much as the 1st place I went to mostly because it was just not as beautiful nor large... plus I couldn't hit them as far as the little girl at the other end (this made me really sad boohoo ..but then I'm sure she's been playing forever and ever..still).

Cute little public course with a short 9 holes.
It's not boringly flat....there are knolls (I love knolls) and lots of water features, including geyser-type fountains.  It's called The Lakes, duh....

There is a:
- Pro Shop.  It was open today, Sunday.
- Putting green.
- Sand trap next to the putting green, just for practice.
- Driving range.
- Lot with plenty 'o parking & beautiful landscaping everywhere on the grounds.
- Cafe with outdoor seating next to a pond with a waterfall.  They are now serving Sunday brunch in the restaurant from 9 till 2.  Brunch is only 15 bucks, or get a package deal of golf & brunch for $25.  That's cheap!  I shoulda checked out the brunch.

Expect nice coolish temps here because it's located close to the beach.
This is a great little facility with much to offer and it was crowded today.
I added 11 photos to the ones already posted to the listing.

Now that the review is done, I feel a brief story coming on......haha.... :
My parents were avid golfers when I was growing up.  I was a golf orphan, haha. Actually, they dragged me with them much of the time.  I learned a lot about golf, mostly that I hate it.
But I do like hitting balls at driving ranges, go figure.

Witnessing a hole-in-one is like the modern version of finding a four leaf clover; every1 I know who's ever seen is one is forever turned lucky. After filling myself whole with brown rice and shrimp from Feast from the East my friends and I hopped on the 405 for a round at The Lakes.
Unfortunately, I have very little skill in the game that I've been playing since I was four yet am still a fan. I usually go along for the warm weather, the outdoors experience and to join my old buddies who are more talented fans the old-fashioned game. My old chum and I frequent Little Rancho for all our par-3 needs but today we decided to venture to the not so frequented Lakes. Last time we played here was near our high school graduation, so it's been a good four plus years but I remember it like it was yesterday. Fast greens, lush ponds, and surrounded by cars and airplanes this is about as good of a Par-3 that can be found in Los Angeles. And we had a great round; well I should say my buddy did. He chipped in a birdie from the sand right after saying "I never do well from the sand." Such a Modest British boyo. I hit over six on every hole except two but managed to only lose one ball, the nice one I purchased from the clubhouse that had The Lakes logo on it. After our hot and sunny round, we sat by the clubhouse and had our respective drinks. Lemonade for I, Mountain Dew, and Ice Tea for the true American of the group. Quite a relaxing afternoon. I would most certainly recommend The Lakes for any semi-novice/quasi-pro who wants something a little less audacious and I wouldn't consider it simply a pitch and putt either.

I suppose a driving range is classier than an outdoor shooting range...I have no class.

Ok I am not exactly a golf expert, matter of fact my whole golf experience comprises of one hour one night at this driving range and the next day playing best ball with teams of four with a shotgun start with my company.

What I can say is that the course is located 1 mile South of LAX and it is a 9-hole course so I think it would be the perfect place for a business traveler that is staying near the airport and does not have the time to play a full course or for someone that has a very long lay-over can hop into a taxi and play a few holes on one of our bright sunny days (a nice way to break up a day of travel).

The staff is very nice at the pro-shop.  They allowed me to borrow several clubs (they seemed brand new) without a deposit or leaving my ID.  I had a blast and I did not do too bad for a first timer.

Update June 13, 07

Had my yearly company golf tournament yesterday and I sucked this year.

Nice executive golf course, and fairly easy to get a tee time on the weekends.  Very good value for a 9 hole round.  The driving range can be quite a bit crowded at times, as in addition to all the folks practicing on the weekends they have a number of golf instructors.  There's also a fairly big putting green for those looking to work on that aspect as well.

The Lakes is a basic executive course (9 holes, with two "par 4" holes).  The original course has changed hands a couple of times, and the new owners are did a great job of recreating the tee boxes, greens, etc.

One problem is, people that play it are not that experienced in golf.  So etiquette, pace of play, and playing ability is lacking.  But a course you can pretty much play in 1.5 hours at most.  Bad days are holidays and Sunday afternoons (can be 2 hours).

The driving range is fantastic.  Two levels with great mats, etc.

They also have golf pros for lessons in either group of private.

Pro shop is well stocked and very friendly staff.

Bar / restaurant is great too.  Kitchen is open until 230-300pm, and snacks after.  The bar has a beer and wine license.  They have Happy Hours as well.

Recent edition is Taco Tuesday and Pasta Thursday, where they have all you can eat food and golf for $15.

I once got drunk at a tournament here, was almost impaled by a flying tent, and fell off a green.

Good place.

I love playing at this course. Yes it pretty damn short, but its still great. As for as executive short courses go, this one is among the best. THey keep this place in tip top shape, and even allow lots of birds/animals to chill there. I saw a fox kick it around the 9th hole the last time i played. Animals are cool.

nice place to get a quick game with some friends on weekend or weekday. Pho Shizzle.

Oh hooray, one of my most favorite places to practice and to play. Right on Sepulveda north of Rosecrans Blvd. and south of El Segundo Blvd., The Lakes at El Segundo is a clean, quaint place to play the great game that I love.

First the course: Just a short, executive nine hole course with 2 Par 4's. The rest are Par 3's ranging in distances from 90 yards to 180 yards. The Par 4 are both well under 325, so anybody of any skill can play this course. It's a pretty course with a nice lake; you got nice sea breezes and salty air. Most of the people that play there are beach folk from El Segundo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. So it's always mellow.

Now the practice facility is on two tiers. I always use the top tier because the bottom tier is slightly downhill in most areas. It's weird but I can feel how uneven the ground is there. Going on, it's a nicely lighted, bright range that has clean balls, nice, new mats and in some places, mirrors so I check my positions of my swing.

It's usually open till late. I was there once until 11:30pm. I don't know what time they stop selling balls, I think it's 9 or 9:30pm. There's also a nice practice putting green there that's pretty huge and there's a little sand and short game area.

They are golf instructors on the site. I have taken a lesson here, but there's an instructor there named Aubrey. He seems to be a really nice guy and he seems to have the gift of teaching golf.

It's a great place to have a little fun. And now that the new shopping center has been built just south of the Lakes at El Segundo, there are restaurants, coffee shops and other cute hangouts nearby. You can add The Lakes at El Segundo as part of date package of golf with dinner or coffee or walk on the beach or whatever.

Yeah, so I'm reviewing a golf course.

Nice, 2 tiered range, open late. 11pm I think. Neat-o.

I'm new to golf, and 9 holes is about all I can handle. I really stink, so by the end of 9 I'm pretty angry, having a Mickelson style melt down.

Casual and relaxed, how I think golf should be.

Food's not bad, and the beer is cold. Amen.

I love this course because it is only 5 minutes from my house.  It is a pretty decent 9 hole course with 2 par 4's.  You can only hit irons on the 9th hole par 4 though.  The scenery is pretty nice.  There are some water hazards and nicely placed sand traps.  The grass upkeep is pretty good for a 9 hole.  The driving range is great because there is an upper and lower level.  I wish there was an area for grass hitting though.  There is a practice green and chipping area also.  Parking is easy, but I would not park next to the first hole.  I've seen a couple nasty shanks.

I first learned how to play golf here, many years ago. Although I haven't played here for many years, I recall that the conditions were great and the driving range is nice also. It's only 9 holes, but a great place to play after work (in the summer, especially when it stays light out). Lots of beginning golfers, so please be patient.

Great place to learn how to play. Driving range is quiet, has two levels, and you can get lessons easily. They have a cool pro shop and the food at the restaurant hits the spot after a game. Love it! Its a great place for newbies.

I've only ever used the range here so I can't rate the course itself.

Every time I've gone it has been very busy; doesn't matter if it's a Tuesday night or Saturday morning.  It usually doesn't take long to get a spot though.  The facilities are pretty good and nicely maintained.

My biggest complaint though is that anytime I go at night the pro shop is locked up with a "back in 5 minutes" sign in the window and inevitably it's at least 10 minutes before anyone opens it up.  This wouldn't be so bad, except that you have to pay for your range balls at the shop.  It gets pretty irritating to want to get swinging and your stuck waiting for the pro shop cashier to show up.  If they just let you pay at the machine like a vending machine everything would be fine.
