West Springfield, MA
Located right in the Book Mill, this place is great to relax and have a great cup of coffee or a beer. The place has two floors, with the bottom floor looking out to the river. The top floor is near the bar and waiting area. The wood floors, deck and decor is very charming and aesthetically pleasing to New Englander like me. The fact that the establishment is connected to the Book Mill makes the cafe a further winner in my book with its prime location and atmosphere. The times I have been there the staff has been very friendly and easy to talk to at the bar. The establishment has often played good music (and if I am not mistaken, have hosted small performances) for the calming, literary environment. There is a small but unique selection of beers and teas or coffee with plenty of regional literary or special-interest magazines/periodicals to read. I had the salads here and they are usually hearty with good portions.
My only complaint that it can be very popular and noisy; it has the tourist-appeal of being located near the Book Mill and attracts students from the Knowledge Corridor. I can't tell you how many Saturdays I see New York license plates or UMass parking stickers at the parking lot. This is ideally a good thing, but the relatively peaceful atmosphere that this place can be is sometimes seldom appreciated, especially on a busy Saturday. I did have a day off once and I went to the cafe at 11:00 AM on a Wednesday I think. It was quiet and I struck up a conversation with a stranger and then saw an old friend. I was able to read my book quietly over the dull rush of the river in the background. It is ideal for relaxing on those kinds of days, but its also fun with friends or a date. -

Eat some hot pressed sandwiches, drink some alcohol, and visit the sexy used book store right next door and you could easily kill a day here. The views are beautiful in autumn, which I can attest to but its likely gorgeous year-round with the stream and wooded areas nearby. The cafe and the bookstore are inside what probably used to be a residential house, and it's as cozy as you would expect in that regard.
If you actually wallowed a day away in woodsy, literary and alcoholic bliss, you can always get dinner at the night kitchen, also right next door.
The sausage/mustard sandwich is nice, and they all come with salad, a nice plus for a lunch.
Maple milk isn't terribly maple-y. It's more sweet milk than anything. -

I like coming here. The food is decent, and the atmosphere is great - relaxing, right over the water.
We were torn between 3 and 4 stars here, but went with three on one point. If you are going to serve me tortilla chips, at least have the decency to not make a big display with the Tostitos bag. Maybe it's pretentious, but at least pretend I couldn't go to Big Y and get the same chips for $2.50 a bag when I just handed you more than that for a portion.
Otherwise, no complaints. The beers are great, the wines are too. Food comes out in a good amount of time, and provides good value for price paid. -

Great food and an amazing location. I love sitting outside; perfect for letting the kids run around safe from harm. The proximity of the Book Mill is a huge plus.
The only downside is the incredibly surly staff. These people have no personality and are usually totally put out to do anything for you. Totally obnoxioius. Still, the warm rice salad will keep me coming back. -

Right after you buy your books from the Book Mill you can enjoy lunch at The Lady Killigrew Cafe.
I had a perfect panini with apples, cheese, and marmalade, which came with a really good side salad. They have a great beer selection and fantastic service. There are a bunch of tables inside, though I was there on a perfect fall day and sat near the water.
An all around special place. -

Love to go here and look out the window at the rushing water with a cup of tea. The menu is cute with nice variety. The peanut noodles are delicious...

Lady Killigrew's menu is limited but very delicious. When I have out-of-town visitors, I love to bring them here. You can hear the sound of the rushing water, have a salad with amazing homemade dressing, delish paninis, great baked goods, and terrific beers. Many ingredients are local. When you leave, you can stop by the Book Mill and get your friend a souvenir--a bumper sticker that says "Books you don't need in a place you can't find."

My wife and I LOVE this place. We have been going there for years to relax and eat great food. We love it so much that we decided to rent out the space for our Rehearsal Dinner two nights before our wedding. The Lady Killegrew staff did an outstanding job for our event. They helped us pick out beer and wine, define the menu, and go through other details like dessert.
When we arrived that evening, they had lit candles throughout the restaurant, had the cheese platters out and about just like we discussed, and were ready with the whole meals when it was time for dinner.
Our 30 guests loved the place, and it could not have worked out any better. We are extremely thankful to Jason and the whole Lady Killegrew staff for their great food, service, and attention to detail. They were simply awesome! -
Review from Amy H.
When I lived far away, my mother would research the area for days and then send me gift certificates for local restaurants because she knew what a highbrow tightwad I can be when it comes eating out. I love to cook and when I dine out, I often leave the restaurant feeling dissatisfied and contrite because I can normally cook better food at home.
Not the case with Lady Killigrew Cafe.
I wish I could tell you more about their menu but for the several times that I have been here, I couldn't help but to get the same thing each time. The warm brown rice salad, it's unbelievable. A bountiful (enough for two people), fresh, organic salad on top and as you dig in, the sweet surprise of warm rice on the bottom that is loaded with other vegetables and topped with a tangy signature homemade beet dressing. They prepare the rice ingredient fresh everyday and don't bother asking them to make modifications; they couldn't because doing so would simply distort the entire essence of the dish. They have many creative, cafe-style options that seem to cater mostly to vegetarians.
Dee is always impressed by their nice selection of local beers. Free Wifi - stay as long as you'd like and be sure to talk to the locals. No paper products are used at this cafe except (scarce) chlorine-free napkins and recyclable to-go packaging. Someone is clearly paying attention to the amount of waste being created here and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. Saying this would seem trivial to you lucky folks in the Pioneer Valley, but a big deal in relation to where I live now. Aside from the ambiance (see my review on the Montague Book Mill) and goofy as it sounds, another one of my favorite things about this lovely place is the self serve water station where you can help yourself to fresh filtered water anytime. Homey.
I'll say it again. If you have not been to this area before, call ahead or double check the website of the place you are heading. I'm pretty familiar with the area, but recently, while coming from a different direction (where the road is closed) we got lost for a long time (camper in tow), but we didn't give up. It's always worth it.Listed in: High-Fives, Liquid Wisdom

I don't even remember how I stumbled on this place but man am I glad I did! It's situated in the middle of nowhere (as far as i'm concerned, lol) but the food is excellent which I think is due to an extremely limited menu (maybe 6 sandwiches, a few salads, and baked goods) but hey small is good if its done right, and here it is. The biggest draw for me at this place is their beer selection. They are constantly rotating their taps (I think there are 4) and they have tons of bottled micro-brews. I love how tiny places like this always appreciate quality things like local produce and hand crafted beer. I wish more places like this existed. Go during the day, you can sit by the river and sip a cold one, or pop in next store to the cool used bookstore. Definitely worth the trip! Oh and don't forget to try the warm brown rice salad!

The Lady Killigrew, contrary to what the name might suggest, always gives me warm fuzzies. It takes me back to college days of lugging a huge bag of books and notes into the cafe and ordering a tall cup of coffee before settling in for all the work. It's definitely one of the best places around here for working, munching, and sipping at the same time.
The menu will certainly satisfy many people's palettes. It's satisfied mine most every time I've gone. Their sandwiches are incredible, from the brie and apple to the Nutella and peanut butter. In the past I've loved the curried-chicken sandwich but recently I got a bit sick after eating it. Not sure if it was correlation or causation, but just a word of caution. And the salads are scrumptious. I don't know what they put into the dressing but it's addictive!
Aside from the main dishes, I highly recommend trying any of the cupcakes. I tried out one of the vegan chocolate cupcakes with mint frosting and was definitely pleased.
The atmosphere in the cafe is perfectly suited to the exterior, kind of rustic, woodsy, earthy, and completely complimentary to the view of the river, which you can easily catch glimpses of if you snag a seat by the window.
Oh, but be sure to get there early! Seats fill up quickly, especially on weekends, and the cafe has a no laptop rule during lunch hours on the weekend (luckily you can carry your food into the book store). But if you want to dine and enjoy the scenery, beat the lunch rush! One way or another, just get there, it's definitely a must-try. -

Great beer. The noodles and the brown rice salad are very good. You can buy a book, order some lunch and eat it in a lovely setting. The only downside is that the staff is a little distant. But it's New England, so what do you expect? I'm new to the area, and find service to be a bit on the frosty side frequently throughout the Pioneer Valley. Here there is a hipster variant that feels way too cool for Montague, but it doesn't really get in the way that much, since you order at the counter anyway.
The fact that it's situated within the Book Mill definitely raises the rating. If it were stand-alone somewhere else, I would probably give it three stars. -

Free wireless and really good food and coffee. It's attached to a used book store, and there's wine, and Jonathan Hodgman hangs out there.
i just described both my view of heaven, and the Lady Killigrew Cafe.
Try the brown rice salad, and the chips and chutney, both are not to be missed. They have Scrabble, so you can go there with a friend and order coffee or wine and play a round. An all-around fantastic cafe. -

I really really wanted to love this place more than I did.
The location was absolutely breathtaking. That alone could give it 5 stars.
I'd heard about the Lady Killigrew Cafe by reading the owner's writings on McSweeney's. I was stoked- a young person, just really excited by wine- but not by pretension, who wanted a chill cafe.
But the place had split personality disorder. There were dudes drinking beer and watching football, surly hipsters behind the counter, old couples having lunch, and people studying. Even though the place is attached to a bookstore, I was somehow really turned off by the people plugged into their computers.
The food was downright good. But I was disappointed by the wine list. The prices were about a dollar too high per glass, and no where did I see the owner's signature style of descriptions. Just the names. How sad.Listed in: Back in the Valley Again

The most beautiful view in New England, right on the Sawmill River, fresh food, located in the Historic Monatague Bookmill on the Sawmill River. One of the most beautiful locations in Massachusetts. It was opened as a grist mill in 1832 by Alvan Stone, then in 1930, Martin Machine Co bought the mill and turned in to a factory for making marking machines.

The Lady Killigrew Cafe is out of this world. Both for food and location. You can get beer.
The used bookstore is one of the best, the wallpaper in the bathroom needs checking out.

Best peanut noodle salad I have ever had. Curry chicken salad sandwich is also fabulous. Those are the only two things I've had, though, because they're so good I can't bring myself to get anything else.
It's a drive for most people, so make an afternoon out of going to the cafe and the bookmill (just don't expect to plop down at one of the cafe tables and monopolize it for hours on end -- the seating is limited so the staff tries to politely encourage people who are done with their lunch to move on...) -
Review from Su-Yee L.
A wonderful cafe located in a really cool old gristmill. Their grilled sandwiches are delicious, much better and more filling than what I expected from a cafe. I had the special of a grilled sandwich with carved ham, swiss, caramelized onions and sage mayo which also came with a good-sized salad. My bf had the curried chicken sandwich which was also really good. The prices seem a bit hefty at first glance but are pretty decent for what you get.
It was super crowded when we went last weekend and rather difficult to maneuver around the small space but the service was friendly and pretty quick. Definitely check out the bookmill afterwards! -

What else can I say about this place except Pure Magic. There's an amazing vibe that is something completely unique to the Montague Bookmill, and with it, the Lady K. Just grab yourselves a snack board with summer sausage, cheddar cheese, apples, italian bread and whole grain mustard, a panini with delicious mixed greens on the side, and a couple of beers and sit next to the windows over the river and feel that life won't get much better than that one moment. Yes - this place really is that good. Let's just say I live in Rhode Island and I pretty much planned a solo October foliage trip with the main attraction being lunch at the Lady K. Head to the bookstore after lunch and browse through some used books and you've got one perfect afternoon.

Some dudes were hanging out drinking beer and watching the New England Patriots play a game of football against some other team while Nick Drake played some of his smooth stylings on the stereo. Weird, right? All this while snacking on a curried chicken sandwich, sipping some white wine I'd never heard of and looking out the window at a poetically flowing river. The view from the main room in this cafe is beyond description. And the sandwich kicked ass.
It's not quite the place I thought it would be -- it has a couple different vibes going on -- on one hand it's the kind of place people go to read a book or write in their journal or something (Nick Drake on stereo), and on the other it has people coming to watch the game and sip beers -- I suppose a third group are people that just want a good lunch. But this doesn't really bother me -- a place can successfully try to be all things to all people. If they had a movie night it would be the exact place I dreamed about owning when I was 16 years old.
I'd heard about this place by getting the column that the owner writes sent to me: http://www.mcsweeneys....
We were hoping we could comment to the owner that we had a humorously similar experience at the Wine Expo last year but we were kind of hung over and not very talkative and it looked like it was hired help that was there, being a Sunday and all. At any rate, I'd love to go back to this place some time and maybe play one of their board games. -

This place is a 10 minute drive from my new apartment. Yessssssssss.
Do you like used books, vintage charm, and beautiful scenery? Who doesn't, right? The Bookmill and the Lady Killigrew have all of these in spades. I come here at least once a week to study. The people are so nice, and don't mind you sitting for hours. I always end up in the same table near the window.
I love their grilled nutella sandwich, and they have delicious teas, but I'm not so much a fan of their other food, which is why I'm making this 4 stars. The sandwiches are a little one-note, and they scratch up my mouth! It's a minor quibble, but still. -

Here I am enjoying the scene at The Lady Killegrew:
http://www.youtube.com...
This place is a perfect place to stop to break up a day of leaf-peeping in the Berkshires. As you can see by the season, I visited on a rainy day in May, so the colors were green and grey for me.
The problem with this place (or the reason why it is so fantastic ) is that It's not on the way to or from anywhere, you kind of have to seek it out. I am sure it's a favorite of UMASS Amherst and Amherst collegians, and I'll bet there's a Bill Cosby sighting every so often, but you're not likely to find this gem if you're looking for a place to eat off 91 (seriously, it's not easy to get to).
Enjoy a vegetarian entree and perk your ears to learn about some alternative uses for compost and the pros and cons of leather chaps. -

The Lady Killigrew is a hidden secret on a babbling river in Western Massachusetts. I grew up here and never knew it existed until recently. Since my discovery, I try to go often, for many different occasions. I notice that some are turned off by the many functions of the establishment, but I feel that this only adds to its intrigue.
Lady Killigrew is a favorite spot of my husband and I to go to finish up our grading at the end of a marking period (we're teachers). No matter what the season, the river offers a gorgeous backdrop. We grab a cup of coffee or tea and share one of the amazing dark chocolate cupcakes. We have also enjoyed relaxed meals here, with a nice selection of beer and wine and hearty sandwiches. A great place to come in the morning with a friend to catch up over a bagel and cup of tea. I tried the maple milk one day when I needed a sweet fix and it was delicious.
I always enjoy the fun artwork, games and reading material that are available. There are stack of a magazine devoted to random notes and photos that have been compiled from different people. There are boxes of games available to play, from Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, to Connect Four. The art on the wall changes quite frequently and one piece that stands out in my mind was a series of polaroids that were pasted together and captured an interesting point of view of the cafe itself. Finally, the wallpaper in the bathroom is a collage of random facts, notes, menus and pages of books. I'm sure that the average trip to this bathroom takes much longer than one would normally expect.
Overall, a spot that should not be overlooked. -

Review from Rue B.
Montague, MA
Love the atmosphere and the waterfall and the lighting and the Bookmill overall. Bookmill - 5 stars. Lady itself - 3 stars.
Here's my breakdown of the Lady's 2 phases.
Under the original owners, a 5 star establishment - it was their own unique creation and highlights were ridiculously worded literary dispatches to the world at large via interweb and paper adverts, a polaroid wall full of cowboy coffee completers, they created the bones of the delicious menu that is mostly still intact, and had the most delicious cupcake recipe known to mankind (since retired for tasty Evolution cupcakes) Plus these owners were all-around nice people who'd make small talk even if you weren't part of the pre-approved clique. They eventually moved on and sold.
Under the current owner, 2.5 stars. No more picture wall. A tv instead. Inconsistent attitude from some staff - some days nice, other days hardly acknowledge you even when you try for brief small talk. Waaay overpriced beer. $8 bottle "special" for an Old Rasputin the other day. $8? Really? On special? Is this a joke? Few things get me more livid than a 300% markup on a 12 oz bottle of beer. For the $9 after tip that I'd pay for that beer, I could get a 4-pack of Rasputin at Whole Foods. Much of the menu has big markup along these same lines. You gotta make money somewhere, but damn that's just inhumane! (On the flipside, Narragansett is $2)
And the kinda smug-seeming owner guy laughs his way home to a fortune built on a simple panini press, microwave scrambled eggs, and charging what the intelligaffluentsia of the Valley will bear.
Fortunately these negative aspects are balanced by the wonderful historic, literary, and natural atmosphere of the overall Book Mill experience. Seriously, who doesn't love the place?
11/23/2011 - why does the Lady K refuse to carry local beers? The fantastic Element Brewery (http://www.elementbeer...) is made IN MONTAGUE - yes, Millers Falls is in fact a sub-village of Montague, but I have never seen their mindblowing beer at the Lady. Same with Berkshire and Lefty's. This makes zero sense! Franklin County businesses got to stick together. What's the deal guys? -

Beautiful, woodsy, with a wine/beer or coffee/tea bar (your choice) up front, the sound of the water in the spring, fall and summer, or bright light shining in from huge windows showing your view of the river and the trees in the winter, and all wood walls and furniture, Lady Killigrew Cafe is a delight in every way.
The servers are easygoing and friendly, the atmosphere is casual, (yes, they have free dsl, but it's limited on weekends, due to the limited seating), they accept credit cards, and the food is farm fresh and delicious. My favorite meals are the egg and cheese on a bagel; the cheese, bread, mustard, and apple plate; and, the brown rice bowl with their superb light dressing mixed throughout the absolutely freshest, softest, green and red lettuce (it's so beautiful!), with carrot strips and broccoli, and so good for you! They also have vegan cupcakes from Cafe Evolution, which I love. Esp. the mint chocolate one, which I didn't even know was vegan, it was so creamy and moist, until I tried it twice! They also have meat and chicken sandwiches. Their curried chicken sandwich (which comes with a hefty portion of beautiful greens) is hearty and flavorful (though, part of me wishes it would have raisins in it because I like savory and sweet together). And, it would be awesome to have one with tofu, curry, and currants. Yum.
But, anyway, The Lady Killigrew Cafe is my favorite casual, friendly cafe (order up front, sit down and they bring it to you). They have bands occasionally, and always a friendly, easygoing, quiet-ish vibe (perfect for studying or after a cycling trip, or just because). It's like Cheers, but in Montague. And, it's absolutely heaven, next door to the rambling Bookmill bookstore. -

This is definitely what I miss the most about being in the Pioneer Valley. The Lady Killigrew/Book Mill's views are beautiful, the space is relaxing, and the overall feeling is one of friendliness and good cheer. Bagel sandwiches are divine, and I have no words to describe the Allagash White with raspberry lambic ice cubes. This was my favorite place to go study in college, though my friend and I would usually end up talking, ordering numerous coffees, and playing rounds of scrabble. It's unfortunate that the Book Mill is now being sold; I just hope it ends up in the hands of someone similar to the previous owner.

Location location location - riverside table in a beautiful old mill on a sunny late fall day. Good looseleaf tea in a mug and a grilled Nutella sandwich for a late, light lunch. Yum, but a little pricey. Service OK but a little on the frosty side. Order and pay when you enter, grab utensils etc., order delivered to your table, bus your own table. Dusty coffeeshop atmosphere with wifi. Used bookstore next door, and various other shops, the real star is the riverside location and the cool old mill, which is worth the "off-highway" detour.

If you love any of the following: books, panini's, nature, and country drives, then the Lady Killigrew and the Book Mill are for you. The drive through beautiful countryside alone is worth the trip. Spend an afternoon reading, having a pint with a friend, or going to a winter film screening. If you are in the area, it would be a tragedy to never experience the Book Mill. It would be an even greater tragedy if you didn't order a panini.

This is just a fantastic package deal...browse the books at the book mill then stop in for some cold ones. Love the hole-in-the-wall feel. Fun staff, hard to find brews, tv, good snacks. We got semi-drunk here before heading to dinner at the night kitchen downstairs.

My b.f. lives only 2 blocks from the Killigrew, so we stop in pretty frequently for lunch (and I know he goes all time time when he's too lazy to cook). The menu isn't huge, but if you're in the mood for a panini, this is a pretty good place to go. Speaking of panini, I like the curry chicken, and sandwiches come with a small salad too. During the weekend, the inside can get packed, since people camp out at the tables with their laptops enjoying the free wi-fi, so finding a seat is often an adventure.

By day, this bookstore-cafe enjoys quite a view of the falls. At night, the low lighting on the classic, natural furniture makes the atmosphere warm and refined, yet still casual. I'm enjoying the fast internet and the barista's Pavement album. I wish Boston had a cafe remotely this classy.

The most charming enchanting place. Lovely babbling waterways, beautiful bookstore, lovely food, tasty pints. Charming. The music shows (although I don't think they are doing them anymore) at the bookstore are a real treat. It's got real magic to it...However, it seems they have added a TV - this I don't approve of (haven't been there in a bit). One of my favorite places to escape to in the Valley.

Montague, MA
Best outdoor seating in the Valley (when people say that it's on the river, it really is ON the river). The brown rice salad is their trademark dish and rightfully so. The coffee is brewed hot and cold and is worth the slightly high price. The selection of beer is eclectic and widely varied. Their dessert supply is lacking, but I can forgive them that. And the adjacent used bookstore is equally as eclectic and expansive.
