I AM IN LOOOVE with the lab.  The staff was really friendly and helpful.  Everyone was chatty and un pretentious.. which is hard to find in Bev HIlls. But the star of the show was CK.  He did a FANTASTIC job on my hair.  I left there feelilng beautiful and gorgeous.  What more can a girl ask for?

The one downside is that CK is leaving the salon for NYC.  So he recommended this guy named Adrienne.  So I will review once again once I get my hair done by him.

But by far the best 80 bucks I have ever spent on a haircut!  GO TO THE LAB PEOPLE!!!

The stylist I go to at The Lab is Yanira. On top of being one of the sweetest people I know she does AMAZING color. I have people tell me constantly what a pretty color my hair is and how natural it looks. One time I even decided to go to another hairstylist for a blowout (sorry Yanira) and he had all the other hairstylists come looks at my highlights and wouldn't stop raving about what a good job it was.

Another thing I really like about Yanira is that she's very hospitable and detail oriented. She always remembers to ask if you'd like something to drink, a magazine or anything else to make you comfortable. She also extends this level of detail to your hair making sure the cut, the color and the style is perfect for you.

Overall, The Lab is great. Everything is always super clean and all of the stylists stay current with the newest products, technology and information.  First rate salon with first rate staff!!!

I go to Chrissy for Great Lengths hair extensions, she is amazing. Very precise and detail oriented (the way a stylist should be!), she even splits the extensions so they are smaller (more natural looking) and gentler on your hair. She's got a great personality too and I always have fun with her. I live an hour away, so I can't go to her for color (I get my hair colored pretty often). But my colorists have always complimented her work, saying it's much better than any other extensions they see. Stylists rarely compliment other stylists work, so that really says something. Parking is a bitch, but that is to be expected anywhere in LA.

I found Paradise today.

The Lab is about a block from Rodeo Drive, in the heart of Beverly Hills.
C K is the nicest guy on the planet.  When he began coloring my hair he said,  "Let's get this party started."
Diana, who assisted during the 3+ hours they worked on my hair, was delightful to talk with.
The shampoo chair is more comfy than my bed.
It wasn't real expensive.
The clientele were colorful LA types, stylin' to the max, as one would expect in that area.
The salon is a friendly, fun place and they even gave me good coffee.

I ended up with the absolute best color, highlights, and cut of my entire life.

C K, I salute you.  I think I love you for making me look so much younger.
JayChan, I love you, too, for sending me to C K.

Today I am a very happy woman!  Damn, I feel fine.

(P. S. Do blondes really have more fun?  Guess I'll find out......)

UPDATE:   9/21/07
Our beloved C K has moved back to the East Coast.  That's the bad news.  (Adrian is gone too, BTW....)
The good news:  Sean has arrived at the Lab Salon!!  He recently came from Miami, where he owned salons of his own.  I had my first appt. with Sean yesterday.....and he is an extraordinary stylist.  I expect big things will happen for Sean here in LA.
My hair has a different look now.  It's a messy cut with more dramatic contrast between base color and highlights.  I absolutely love it.
(I posted a photo of Sean.)

And...another update re hair product:
I have been a devoted user of Kerastase, however yesterday Eddie suggested I try the Lab's newly acquired line of Shu Uemura.  I think he said they are the only salon in the area to carry it, so far.  I can't wait to see if it really does make my hair feel like silk!  I'll keep you posted.....

NOTE: JADE HAS MOVED TO THE SALON BY MAXIME at 421 Rodeo Drive. An even more vibrant location for such a fabulous stylist and colorist!

Jade at The Salon by Maxime in Beverly Hills is simply incredible. She changed my entire look - matching my hair to my vibrant personality - and has increased my confidence exponentially over the past 3 years I have been seeing her.

I first found Jade after what has become known as the "bang incident" - when another stylist out in Washington D.C. massacred my side-part bangs and I was forced to bobby pin them back for 5 months during the grow out. Even my good friend Bessy was honest enough to tell me "This is bad."

After 6 months without a haircut, I was visiting my parents in Los Angeles and called the salon on recommendation from a neighbor.  It was fate that Jade had an opening.  She took her time, weaving close to 100 foil highlights with three different colors.  The color was impeccable and blends beautifully and naturally.  She also was immaculate with the cut, going back through my hair after the blow dry to make sure the bangs and layers blended perfectly.

I have now been going to Jade for 3 years , actually flying out to Los Angeles from Washington D.C. every three months to "see my family" (a.k.a  get my hair done by Jade. :P)  I get compliments on my highlights all the time from people on the street and after recently being selected for a "50 Most Beautiful" list, I was contacted by Washingtonian Magazine for information on who does my hair. They wanted to feature Jade in their annual "hair issue." Unfortunately, she is out in LA, so they weren't able to! (See attached pics)

If you're looking for an incredible stylist - and cool friend - you need to go see Jade.  Not only is she witty, beautiful, intelligent, charismatic and sexy - she is by far the most talented colorist I've ever come across.  You'll be coming back again and again! She will also trim up your bangs for free.

I can't wait to see Jade again at Christmas!

It was a Saturday morning.   I had a date to see some of my former band members that evening.  I hadn't seen them in a long time, and I was feeling very meh about myself.  I've gained some weight.  My hair was long and limp.  What was a girl to do?

Well, a new" do" has never hurt!

That's when the phone calls began.  I called a few places I've been to before, and, of course, they simply couldn't fit me in last minute on a Saturday.  Then I tried local places I hadn't been to, and still they couldn't get me in.  That's when I remembered Joan S's review and called it up.

The Lab Salon, in Beverly Hills, situated one block away from Rodeo Drive.  Yowsa!  I was sure it was going to cost me a pretty penny...but for what I got, it was well worth it!

I called and said in a small voice, "I have an impossible request."  The guy who I talked to hopped right to it, as he was apparently used to this sort of problem.  He got me in with Christina at the time I requested!

When I arrived, they were ready for me.  I only had to wait about 5 minutes.  The absolutely stunning Christina came over and we discussed my hair.  Then she began to work.

I sat in the chair, thoroughly entertained by how much she and I had in common.  When she disappeared for a few moments to mix color, it was the opportunity to people watch.  Oh, how fun in a salon like this!

She colored, she highlighted, she cut.  By the time we were done, there was a bunch of hair on the ground, yet my hair was fuller and finally had some body.  Then she styled.

I asked for "sexy hair," and that is exactly what I got!  Not only was the color gorgeous, the cut was fantastic!  Then she styled my hair into loose curls, giving me a very hip, feminine look.

That evening, I paired my new look with a little black dress and some sassy boots.  I felt vibrant and indeed sexy.  Apparently, my new look coupled with my inner confidence showed.  I got all kinds of wonderful attention and love.

My hair cut was exactly the little ego boost I needed!  Thank you, Christina!

WELL. So I had a few friends, and I see many Yelpers, who thought CK was the bomb. Probably so.  But CK is gone from the Lab and what is left...well...

So i have an "event'  to go to and need a blowout on a Monday. I check Yelp ( o' course...). I see the Lab is near my office and is open Mondays. Perfecto. I call. I get the MOST pretentious-sounding receptionist, like Martin Short in "Father of the Bride", who, Fraaaaannckly, gives me pause, but I ask anyway. "You open Mondays?" Why, yes, we are.
Cool. So, I book a blowout, with, apparently, "Melanie", telling Fraaaaanck that it is for a fairly big event and triple confirming etc etc.

I arrive that Monday (yeah, that'd be...YESTERDAY) at five minutes before the booked hour.
OK. First of all, this place is NOT open on Mondays. They open if a specific stylist is working but they are not, per se, open. So there is ONE very busy stylist there. Not "Melanie". Someone else...Chrissy, who is a doll, but that is not the point of this one-star review.

Does Melanie show? Uh...no. Does anybody offer me a magazine or a glass of water or any of the fabulous things which I READ ON YELP happen at this salon? No. Poor Chrissy has to take a break from dripping bleach on some yapping aging princess's locks to see where the hell my blowdry has gone.

Well, apparently my triple confirmed, we-have-your-phone-number blowout with Melanie is truly a blow-off, and for whatever reason, she is not showing up. And I have this THING to be at in a couple hours. Now..they could have called..or they could have said "We're not really open on Mondays, but..." and they didn't do either one, stranding me with bad hair on a big day.

Chrissy is a sweetheart but the Lab sucks, because if you can't trust your hair salon, whom can you trust? I can't attest to the quality or not of the appointment THEY missed, but this is bad salon behavior (still haven't gotten a call from them) and I'm not planning on returning.

Kinda sad for a biz that is a "Yelp sponsor"!!

Tell me why I don't like Mondays.....

YELP HELPS THE WORLD GET PRETTIER or something like that.

CK came to an unofficial yelp dinner with his sister in tow. BOTH are walking billboards for the best asian hairstyles around. so, as an asian with a propensity for ponytails, i took his card and got my ass down to THE LAB in beverly hills where he works his magic.

yes, the place is small and yes, they're expanding, but really i could give a crap as long as my hair looks great when i walk out of the place. and it does. it looks like the waves in the ocean. and i'm not an ocean.

i got the same service the other yelpers did. water. the intro from the owner. but really, my appreciation lies with the magician behind the scissors. that would be CK. he's CK++ to me.

why only 4 stars? well, there wouldn't be a reason to expand if they had 5, now would there?

I've only been here once, so my review might not be the most reliable, but I am definitely not going back to The Lab.

Walking into the salon was a bit awkward--they didn't even greet me. I had to stand around before anyone even acknowledged me. I waited for Christine (the stylist with whom I had an appointment). When she finally came, I was surprised--she was much younger than the rest of the staff. I was a bit apprehensive because with age comes experience...especially with hair.

I asked Christine for something edgy and contemporary, but still sophisticated. She basically cut my hair into a ball with a tail, and swept the front to the side.

Positive: It had a very textured, choppy look which definitely contributed to the edgy look, and the tail was nice and even. Christine, as a person, was very sweet and pleasant to talk to.

Negative: She barely cut anything--it was how she styled it that made it look good. Needless to say, when I got home, showered everything out, and tried to style it again, it didn't look the same. My hair grew back out within a week and I had to look for some other place to cut my hair.

Anyway, after my cut, I went over to the register where the receptionist took care of me. He was, by far, one of the snobbiest people I've ever met...I mean, it WAS Beverly Hills and I guess I should have expected that.

Bottom Line: It's a really busy place, filled with snobby hairstylists  who hide behind congenial facades. The cut was definitely NOT worth the money I paid.

I have been seeing Damo for 9 years. I have followed him to 5 different salons. He is so amazing that when people offer me free haircuts in exchange for hair modeling, I refuse. He is a lot of fun, you can tell him something vague like "I am working a lot so I don;t want to have high maintenance hair" and he will give you exactly what you wanted. I aways get stopped on the street with compliments on my haircut. Also, he is so good that I only need a haircut every 5-6 months. His cuts grow out extremely well.

He takes his own appointments. Call him at 310-497-1019

So I got my haircut here after getting a Britesmile treatment the other day and I had Lindsey.

This was my first time and when I walked in some guy shook my hand and said my name's Danny (I was like great....but then later I found out that owned the place)

And then the manager of the joint introduced himself and was very overaccomodating and if the salon was larger, then it wouldn't have been so awkward.  Or maybe I was awkward.

I also glanced down at the appointment book and saw that I was Lindsey's only client of the day....Hm......

Anyway, Lindsey asked me several questions before we started and I just told her anything goes except for fauxhawks.

Over the course of the next hour, while I was in pain even after I downed 4 Advil, I learned that:

She was from Montana
She moved here 5 years ago
She has been cutting hair in BH for a couple of years
But not always at this salon
She smokes Benson Hedges
She lives in Santa Monica
She accidentally ate her friends' weed brownies and missed work the next day
She really likes cutting hair
But maybe she will move onto something else
Everything happens for a reason
Her relationship with her parents
And much, much more.

So I felt obligated to share my entire life story as well.

Anyway, I really liked my haircut and she knew what she was doing.  She explained to me how my hair grew and how Asian hair was different from other hair, which is always good to know......

We even made fun of short people and Jimmy Au's store for Men under 5'8'' .

If you're male and under 5'8'', please don't take it personally. I only laughed because I didn't want her to fuck up my hair if I deadpanned her. Just kidding I am offensive and laughed because it was funny.

5 stars for a great haircut by Lindsey, -1 star for the small space.

And for the record, she said that she "does hundreds of guys" chuckle chuckle..guess my earlier apprehension was unneeded.

OMG!

CK moved to Beverly Hills!
This is what happens when you are successful in LA. You pack up and move to B.H. Bravo!

I really think the salon is a bit too small but they are taking over the space next door and increasing the elbow room so Artistes like CK can feel more comfortable and schmoes like me can feel more relaxed to dish with my "counselor" !!!!!  I can't wait for the grand re opening!

Danny, the owner is a real cool dude. I was watching him style out this chicka with massive blond curls! The guy just glides....
He has an accent that says Brooklyn even though he is from Detroit!

CK is my guy @ Lab.  He moves like a ballet star.....oh wait he was a ballet star....hmmmmm...well any ways I got a real education on eyelash extensions. CK is considered one of the top guys doing such procedures. One of his clients was going on and on about how she loves her new longer, fuller look.
Sorry kids I'm not sitting still that long for any kind of extension!

For more on CK see my review of his former space.
The guy is a shear genius!

Add me to the list of CK lovers!

Booked an appointment on the recommendation of a few Yelpers and boy was it a surprise. He's the first stylist that I've met that works in an upscale neighborhood who's both friendly AND knowledgeable.

More importantly, he knows how to deal with asian hair!

CK treated me terrifically -- he fixed a self-inflicted bad haircut and answered all of the little questions I peppered him with. And more than simply doing the job I requested of him, he added all sorts of little touches such as trimming the little hairs that grow in and around the ears, cleaning my eyebrows up a bit and giving me a nice scalp massage during the shampooing. He's really a one-of-a-kind.

If you're asian (or even if you're not!) and you're looking for a stylist who can deal with your hair, I recommend CK wholeheartedly.

Thanks for the great treatment, CK!

I called The Lab today... Eddie, the manager answered, and I proceeded to tell him my story that went something like this, "Hi.
A few weeks ago I went to a hair salon and the stylist butchered my bangs, they look horrendous. I need help... is there anyway you can have someone try to fix them for me, today?" Eddie was SO nice, sympathized with me, and got me an apt within the next hour.

I get to The Lab and am immediately welcomed by Eddie, who remembered my name and offered me a drink. :) The salon has a very hip, yet friendly atmosphere, I like.
Then... I met Danny. Thank you, thank you Danny. You fixed me, my bangs no longer look horrendous... they're actually quite cute. Danny deserved the huge tip I gave him and I will definitely make all of my future hair appointments with him. Pshewwwwww, it feels so good to finally find a hair stylist I trust.

I highly recommend The Lab.

I wavered writing this review, since technically I didn't have anything done.  But the sheer 'adorability' of CK and his sis, whom I met today, rate 5 stars.  Also the fact that he honestly told me that my hair is too short at the moment to do the hair extensions I have been considering.  He told me he 'could' do it, but basically it would pretty much look like a mess, and that just wouldn't work for me or his rep.  But,  give me two months to grow it - and I will be back!

I love this place and I discovered it from Yelp =)  After all the rave reviews, I was drawn to make an appointment in a heartbeat.  It was the best hair decision I ever made.  My stylist was Tiffany and she had an awesome personality and I did not have to guide her through anything.  I just left it up to her to do what she thought was best for me.  She turned my door knob ponytail into an edgier look and it is so much more easier to manage too =).  I love the fact I can style it in so many ways.  In addition, this place is not pretentious at all and everyone is so warm and welcoming, which is always a nice bonus =)

For a year straight, I made a commitment to pay the money and get my hair done to see if made a difference in my personal life.  I met Schuyler, who I thought was gay, but alas, he is entertainingly not!  He listens to the clients, asks for feedback, and tries to accommodate your every need, dislike, want, and issue.  I am high maintenance when it comes to my hair.  VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE.  Schuyler did a wonderful job making my already beautiful hair even more beautiful.  I have recommended coworkers to him and they loved him as well."

So I found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try while I was on a weekend vacation in LA. I booked an appointment for cut and color with Adrian.

I'm a preschool teacher so my hair has been BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH for awhile now since I just shove it into a ponytail every morning.

This place is everything you would imagine it to be. Cool atmosphere, cool people, cool vibe. I highly recommend Adrian. He knows what he's doing and the cool thing about him was he let me know what he was doing to my hair every step of the way. Not to mention an amazing head massage on the shampoo chair, and good conversation, he made me feel completely at ease. I walked out of there with color, lowlights and a new cut and I must say I've never been so happy with my cut and salon experience. How come I can't find a salon like this in the bay area? It means i'll just have to plan another trip to LA sometime soon to get my hair done! It's well worth it.

Here's my plug for Adrian-

P.S. Like Kolbe wrote, Adrian is quite a charming Irish man!
Too bad he's taken! =)

So an out of town friend comes to visit me and she wants to get her hair done.  I'm thinking "great now have to find her a salon" but thankfully this girl came prepared.  She says she has an appointment at a salon called "the lab" and so I just google map it and well... I get
directions to the place (I'm not exactly an expert on women's salons).

So we get there and her butcher I mean stylist, Sean, greet one another and the nightmare begins.  Like I said I don't know anything about salons, but even I know certain styles go with certain types of faces - but Sean was feeling experimental that day.

My friend's new look was just that - new - as in experimental new lol.

Instead of venting her disgust of her new style at Sean  - I got to hear about 2-3 hours of complaints.  I'll be sending Sean a bill for the 2-3 hours of cursing that I had to endure.

I won't bore you further but suffice to say we had to find another salon to fix what Sean did to her hair.

Thank you Yelpers for recommending The Lab and Shirin- my new favorite salon and stylist in L.A.!
Shirin gave me one of the best cut and blowdrys I've ever had.
And my experience here came with three bonuses that I've yet to experience at any of the comparable shi-shi BH salons I've been to- (1) a  not-ridiculous price,
(2) a cool, hip atmosphere and funny, down to earth staff - in contrast to some of the other nearby places with stuffy stylists trying to cater to old, even-stuffier clientele, and
(3) NO WAIT- I was in and out of there in an hour in time to get back to work for the afternoon.
If nothing changes, I can't imagine going anywhere else for a cut or blow-dry in L.A.!

Fist off, I'm  super picky when it comes to hair cuts. I've had amazing $30 cuts and amazing $125 cuts, I've also had really terrible $125 cuts and really terrible $65 cuts.

My first experience here was great. After reading yelp reviews, I called the day of to get my hair color corrected and they totally fit my in. It was actually the Andrea's first day, but she way awesome and i loved my color and she totally fixed the mess I had made. About 6 weeks later I called to make an appointment with the same girl for cut and color, no problem. I get the confirmation call the day before and everything seems to be great, they even confirm that I will be seeing Andrea. So I arrive and tell the same manager I spoke to on the phone the day before that I was there to see Andrea and he informs me that she hasn't worked there for a few weeks because she moved back from where ever she was from. Now, why did they not tell me this on the phone the day before? couldn't tell ya. Anyway, I'm feeling weird, but the manager tells me he'll see what he can do about fitting me in somewhere. So after about 6 assistants approach me, "are you so and so? oh, no? sorry), finally Sean approachs me and says he'll take care of me and thank god I came in because doesn't my hair look a mess and he is going to fix everything. Now, even if he hated my hair and thought I looked terrible, from a customer service stand point, telling a new client tha she looks terrible is probably a bad move. So we get started and I explain to him what I want and the crazy nuances of my hair and I let him get to work. An hour and a half later my hair is not the color I requested, but it doesn't look horrible either and by my count, about an inch more hair is gone than we had discussed. This wasn't the worst haircut I ever had, but it wasn't the best either and he really didn't listen to me (but that's a man for you), which is the most irratating part.  All in all, this place seems to be pretty hit or miss, so go to the Lab but choose your stylist carefully.
