3 reviews for The Jewish Theatre San Francisco
A cozy, well-maintained venue hidden in a nondescript industrial/residential neighborhood. When my friend asked me to go to this theater with him I had trouble picturing its location even though I had visited the area before. When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the warm and friendly staff and a very good audience. I felt thoroughly welcomed as a first-timer. Free refreshments too!
We saw a production of Woody Allen's "The Floating Light Bulb," an unusually bittersweet (by Allen's standards) portrait of a Jewish family in the 1940's (?). The fun is in identifying some of Allen's favorite character types: the beleaguered, two-timing husband, the overbearing wife/mother, the dim, sweet younger girl/mistress. They kvetch, whine, fight, sweet-talk in rhythms that are signature Allen; I do wish the story had a more definite resolution, instead of leaving most characters in situations not very different from where they started. (Small bonus: magic tricks, a theme revisited in The Curse of the Jade Scorpion.)
The actors were fantastic. My friend was more accustomed to subtle, naturalistic film acting and was a little turned off by the physical and (intentionally) melodramatic performances, but I was more accepting. Despite arriving 5 minutes before showtime we were fortunate enough to find front row seats; we also had a nice conversation with the girl sitting next to us. Overall, a very good night out!

I saw "Stateless - A Hip-Hop Vaudeville Experience" this past Friday. A very cozy space, but also very comfortable. You're so close to the action that the performance really jumps out at you. The seats are comfortable and the temperature is nice. All and all a great experience. This part of town is full of the arts. There are so many studios around here now that it seems there is something going on every week.
I saw my first production at TJT last night, "The Model Apartment", it was Excellent! Terrific, quality acting. Nice venue, small yet spacious. TJT has a good reputation and I can see why. I'll definitely go back.
Specialties
TJT specializes in providing a professional yet intimate theatre experience. For thirty years TJT has brought an incredible range of culture to San Francisco. From original works and award-winning plays to the re-envisioning of classics
History
Established in 1978
TJT was founded by Corey Fischer, Albert Greenberg and Naomi Newman. Between 1978 and 1982, TJT was based in Los Angeles where it performed at the L.A. Actors' Theatre (forerunner of the L.A. Theatre Center) and The Mark Taper Forum Laboratory.
In 1982, the company relocated to San Francisco, and embarked on its first tour abroad (Holland, Denmark and Israel). After the 1997-98 season, TJT ran a successful capital campaign for major renovations on its theatre. The space re-opened for the company's 20th anniversary season. The same year, TJT's current artistic director, Aaron Davidman joined the ensemble.
TJT continues to serve San Francisco as the only Jewish theatre in the bay area.
