Why the Irish Pol is the one of the most perfect bars.
1. In a sea of douche it has douche bag repellant.
2. They have lots of yummy beer, and know enough about them to make suggestions based on what you tell them you enjoy.
3. The bartender has totally let me charge my phone cause he's awesome.
4. There is often enough room to sit/stand/hangout.
5. The door guy is entertaining.
6. Walking outside to smoke on a Friday or Saturday night is perfect for people watching, laughing and remembering why you're at the Irish Pol, not the Blue Martini. -

Divey and unpretentious bar in the middle of Old City, I was surprised to find this bar basically deserted during happy hour.
A million beers on draft, the bartender will allow you to taste beers and can provide suggestions if you know what you like.
Super friendly staff and laid back vibe.Listed in: Old City

Heading up to Philly to visit some friends, I asked the folks on Beer Advocate which beer bars I should check out while in town. This is one of the places that they listed, and I'm sure glad they did!
First of all, the way the taps are mounted on the wall is really cool. (You can see it in the pictures.) The sheer number of taps also made the beer snob in me very happy. I was very excited to try Ballast Point's Big Eye IPA and Great Divide's Hercules. Yum!
The second thing that made my visit great was the fact that they have one of those crazy addictive video game machines with Photo Hunt on it. I'm not going to lie, I'm helplessly addicted to those silly things and I love having them around. This shouldn't be as big of a deal to me as it is. :)
But, most importantly, the servers were great. They were attentive, talkative, and just generally friendly. When I had a bit too much and knocked over the remainder of a beer at the end of the night, I apologized to the bartender and she said "It's no big deal! All I have to do is throw a towel on it! Boom! It's done!" Some bartenders act like you've ruined their day just by making them lift a towel, so it's nice to have someone who just takes it in stride.
I'll definitely be returning to this bar next time I'm in town! -

Friendly bar tenders, great selection of beers on tap and a great chill place to hang for the night.

40 beers on tap. Do I need to continue?? Well, I will anyway. Place is awesome. Old City gets an awful reputation for idiots, weekend warriors, amateurs and douche bags. This place is doucher free and almost hidden on 3rd street between Market and Chestnut. All of the bartenders know their beer but don't talk down to you if you're not an afficianado. The bathroom definitely needs some attention but almost all of their beers and shots are 3 bucks during happy hour so who cares. The ladies can hover if they need to... ha! Oh and the "Couzin Ed Hot Mustard" they use on their wings is f'ing amazing. I'd actually vote them as some of the best wings in Philly!

Hands down, my favorite bar in Philadelphia! It is one of the few places you can go with a mixed crowd and not feel out of place. The beer selection is incredible and their wall of taps only has microbrews. There were times when a classic song would come on and the entire bar would bust out singing. The bartenders are fun, knowledgeable and down to earth.

A fun dive bar located in the old city neighborhood. With great craft beer and a laid back clientele, it is worth a stop in for a pint or two. One can expect to find Victory, Troegs, Flying Fish, Great Lakes and other craft brewers on tap here. The prices will not bust your wallet and the staff was attentive. Bar and restrooms are kinda dirty, but hey, it is a dive bar.

Review from Chris W.
Really enjoyed Friday happy hour here. They have a ton of beers on draft for $3 from 5-7 with a few hard to find beers for $4. Both bartenders knew all about the different beers and give out samples too. I tried the old bay cheese fries which were crispy although the cheese cup was small with an odd consistency. I wasn't expecting gourmet food so no big deal, just something to munch on while downing pints. It was a little cold in the bar which I actually prefer. Overall, super friendly awesome Irish bar I can't wait to get back to.

Okay, so i had my verbal temper tantrum about them refusing my friend service because she forgot her wallet, and now I can go back to trumpeting my original love for the Pol.
5 Things I love about the Irish Pol:
1. It's frequently, and unbelievably, NOT crowded, so your group can sit and talk and laugh all night.
2. If you don't have friends, or they are boring, the signs can keep you entertained all night.
3. 38 (?) beers on tap! go ahead, i dare you-- try and drink them all :)
4. Midnight Happy Hours, awesome specials and overall CHEAPness.
5. It's down the street from the meat markety-ness that is often National Mechanics and that is always Madriver, so it's very, very easy to dip over when your friends are "shopping" and you're just not in the mood.

Neat little bar with a great beer selection!
Here's the problem:
After a few craft beers I spy two things: 1) a message on a TV monitor for a $2 Phillies game Lager special and 2) a Phillies game in progress. So I order up a Lager... and the bartender charges me $4. WTF?
Apparently you need to buy a $5 paper cup to get the $2 Lager. Again... WTF.
If you cannot afford to run a $2 Lager special... don't run a $2 Lager special.
I don't do business with people I don't trust... so I guess I'll skip this bar and frequent one of the other dozens of bars in the immediate area. -

Should you go here? I don't know.
Do you like beer? 'Cause they've got lots of it. Are you cheap? 'Cause they've got shitloads of specials 7 days a week. Do you want cheap bar food? 'Cause they have it in spades. Do you like places with character? 'Cause the regulars and the staff have both.
Are you offended by naked ladies? 'Cause they've got 'em on the wall. Do you need to sit to enjoy your brew? 'Cause there's not too many seats. Do you love the typical Old City bar? Because you won't have trance music playing. Are you an asshole? 'Cause they don't seem to tolerate that. Do you prefer liquor? 'Cause a vodka tonic costs $8.
I'll let you choose your own adventure. -

This is a solid, non-douchey Old City hangout.
I'm probably one of the few folks who kept thinking this place's name was "45". "The Irish Pol? Where's that?"
Last I was here, friendly bartender Darren poured us tequila shots, and kept everyone cursing - in a good way - all night long. Plenty of seating and TVs let you take a breather from social interaction, though dancing is recommended.
If you're of a mind to enjoy yourself, go for beer, not hard liquor. After all, of all the Old City pubs, they rank up there in beer selection, stocking more beer than you can shake a stick at.Listed in: Philly Drinkeries

I was on my way to a different place to grab some dinner and decided to stop here because it looked neat. They have a lot of beers on tap -- most of which are $3 during happy hour. I wasn't sure what mine was, but the bartender recommended it, so I tried it. I wasn't a huge fan of whatever I tried, but it was only $3, so I wasn't too concerned.
All in all, the beer selection is great and the staff is friendly and attentive. Check it out! -

Hands down one of, if not the, best happy hours in Philadelphia. How do you win points in my book for happy hour?
+1 for drafts being $3 (almost all of them)
+1 for overall great beer selection
+1 for the 5-7 time frame
+1 for $3 shots if you need to get to a certain place.
+5 for offering happy hour on Saturday and Sunday.
The Irish Pol is in a location where you'll never find me at night because of a certain clientele, but during happy hour, the drinks are good and cheap, the bartender is friendly, and the crowd is motley but nice.
The only thing that could bump the whole place up would be the addition of a real kitchen. Still, a great place to grab a beer from 5 to 7. -

Nice little pub, fantastic beer selection, and played 80's rock when I was there. Good for watching sports too. Bar food available. Bar seating only. Comedy upstairs Mondays and movies upstairs Tuesdays. But the loos, well, ladies you may be disappointed with facilities. And gents, just go, no whinging. If you look under 40 bring your ID. $20 min on credit cards.

Review from Alan H.

What it is: A phenomenal place to actually have conversation with people (because you can hear them over the music) and probably the best beer selection in the city
What is isn't: A place to be seen or to pound Red Bull/vodkas (though they are available)
With a simply outstanding beer selection and a helpful, friendly staff, this is a place that bucks the general trend of foo-foo bars and clubs in Old City. As a resident of Old City, I'm incredibly grateful that this place exists so that I can hide from the popped collars and short dresses (okay, maybe I wouldn't mind seeing the dresses) and the people that wear them that invade my neighborhood on the weekends. The Irish Pol does what it intends to do very well - provide a low key atmosphere, a knowledgeable staff that will make recommendations on their ever-changing taps and serve it to you with a side of witty commentary. For the people complaining about the food, I'm not really sure why they're doing so. The Irish Pol is a bar, it is not a restaurant. Having fried food available when you're just looking to enjoy some beers is an advantage, not a disadvantage.
You have to appreciate the Pol for what it is, not what you want or expect it to be. Is the men's room great? Nope. But any guy that complains about the lack of a mirror in there or the general state of the bathroom is probably going to get ostracized for ordering a macro brew anyway and more than likely will not come back because The Pol doesn't have Bud Light/Miller Lite/whatever other watered down brew you can imagine on special.
If you're looking for something low key where you can actually enjoy a great beer with conversation and you don't worry about whether or not you're being checked out, then this is a place for you. -

Dive bar - you have to be a dive bar person (and like the quiet, the dark, and the companionship of people who never trouble themselves over whether it is technically noon yet).
A stellar draft selection from all over the country, and great happy hour discounts - even on the exotic drafts. Plus, they'll take suggestions for future beers.
No frills, just a great beer selection. -

I've only been here once, but I really like it. Great beer selection, the guys working there were really nice and helpful with recommendations. Good happy hour with $3 drafts. And they have tater tots!!! So good.
I usually hate going out in Old City, but I'm glad I can add the Irish Pol to my short-list of places to go. -

Many reasons why I love Irish Pol.
1. Beers on tap are of wide variety and bountiful!
2. Located in Olde City, within walking distance of everything you need.
3. First level has that smalltown cozy irish bar feeling that ignites a warm fuzzy sensation.
4. Second floor feels like your walking into a modern martini like bar, pinky fingers extended is a must.
5. Two words... Stoner...Platter. Everything that is wrong for you but right when it's well past your bedtime and you've spent your entire night drinking. It's a huge platter of fried goodness!!! French fries, onion rings, mozzerella sticks, fried pierogies and thats naming just a few!

Place is small, but beer selection is great and prices are just right. Prepare to stand, there's nowhere to sit, but it's a great find, and you'll have a ton of fun.
Craft beers at a dive bar is one of the best ways to spend a lazy saturday night. -

During a daytime bar crawl:
A. The happy hour special was terrif
B. The Yetti beer killed me...as the bartender smiles and tells me that it has 9.5% alc.
C. The men's bathroom had no lights and I must now jump into boiling alcohol to cleanse myself
D. Small drinking area, but if you imbibe enough Yetti, you will not give two sh*ts...about anything, in general
I will hit again, to kill the Yetti.Listed in: Yo Adrian!

If you love craft beer and/or dive bars... this is the place.
This is our go-to spot when we visit old city. Every couple months we head down specifically to catch a happy hour at the Pol.
It's a beer drinker's dream dive bar. The drought offerings are substantial (40 taps but usually 30 active from what I've seen). Lots of Yards and Victory plus beers from around the country. Most of the selections (except the most expensive) are subject to happy hour prices of $3 so it's a great deal especially for the Old City area.
They also have a nice selection of junk bar food. Two thumbs way up for the Hot Mustard wings. -

After dinner at ZoT with a large crew of yelpers, several of us were in the mood for a change of scenery. I had never been to The Irish Pol before, so had no expectations whatsoever. This is what I encountered:
- 30 or so beers on tap, including Blanche de Bruxelles, the first beer I requested at ZoT and seemingly the only beer that they did not have
- Awesome jukebox that consistently defaulted to Beastie Boys tunes between requested songs
- My newest addiction, Photo Hunt, which apparently cannot be mastered (even with a team of five people)
- AWESOME bar food. Does The Irish Pol cater? They should.
My brother will be so impressed when I introduce him to this most wonderful dive bar. It is sure to become a staple. -
Review from Bill M.
I'm upping my love for The Irish Pol only because you can have some serious fun when you try to create sentences from their diverse and extensive beer selection. Example -
"I had quite the Odd Notion that Sweaty Betty was a Crotch Sniffer due to the Flashbacks that Circus Boy had."
And so that might just be the BEST sentence ever that I have constructed for the sake of a review (sorry for the explicit nature. But when you find a beer called Crotch Sniffer you really have to run with it!).
But I'm also giving it up for the overall atmosphere of the place. It gave off a good and friendly vibe on every occasion that I've been to it so far. I'll give an exclamation point yet again to the fact that it has 40 taps! quite frankly when you roll into a place with the likes of a Burger Assassin, and a Cupcake Queen, food has to be a factor. and it's quick offerings satisfied our drunken munchies. And Photo Hunt is clearly amazing whether it the regular or nudie version. One day I will top Meredith's score!
And on another update I'm now not sure if Cousin Ed is the owner. But he's still the man!Listed in: The Highlight Reel, Philly Bars, Beer Haven, ROTD!!!, He took one guitar, juke box hero, stars in his eyes.

If you (1) love beer and (2) have a juvenile sense of humor, then The Irish Pol is phenomenal. I possess both those qualities in spades, and so I like it a lot.
Forty beers on tap? And almost all of them are $3 during happy hour? Yes please.
Boobie bingo*? And a gold bikini party on Carrie Fisher's birthday**? Again, how could you not love this?
The only reason I'm holding back that final star is because the food is just typical fried bar food. Its good, just not enough to net a perfect score.
* Which is exactly as exploitative and awesome as you are imagining.

I was so relieved on Saturday night when I stepped into The Irish Pol. In the midst of Olde City, The Irish Pol is a calm, quiet alternative to the watering holes with frat boys crushing beer cans on their foreheads. With an extensive draft beer selection, the place is tiny and intimate and not over-crowded. We spent our evening upstairs in the private room for a wedding after-party. I'm not sure if that room is usually open to the public, but there is a bar upstairs and some cozy benches around the perimeter of the room.
If you're looking to have a low-key evening and enjoy an extensive beer selection, onward, ho! to The Irish Pol! -

The Irish Pol matters to me for one major reason; I generally hate Olde City. The neighborhood is beautiful, but after dark it becomes a breeding ground for bros and girls trolling for bros.
However, in the event I'm asked to attend a function at some insipid, overpriced "lounge" with a monosyllabic name I delight in the knowledge that I only have to make an appearance and have one drink before I politely excuse myself and head over to Pol.
Once there I continue to delight in the wonderful and vast beer selection, the bartenders who know something about everything they have on tap and the bar set-up itself (I love that the taps are on the back wall of the bar.) The music is usually good and the "bros" tend to feel the icy stares of judgement being shot at them and head for the exit post haste. -

So I wandered over here with some of the ZoT crew last Thursday night. It's a pretty unassuming place from the outside, and the inside doesn't do much to dispel that notion. It was pretty dimly lit, and there weren't a lot of people there. Things weren't looking up.
Then I saw how many beers were on tap. 30+ beers on tap. Holy Moly. I ended up drinking a Guinness and a Blue Moon. The Blue Moon was pretty good, but the Guinness tasted like they hadn't cleaned the lines in a while.
The jukebox had a good selection of tunes, including The Beastie Boys, Flogging Molly, Allman Brothers and more. I also enjoyed playing Photo Hunt with Ms. Cupcake Queen, Dan the Fireman, Bill M, and some guy from Birmingham whose name escapes me(Eric?).
My only other gripes were that they needed to mop the floor around the urinal a little more, since it smelled like Eau D' City Hall train stop. That and they had NO frickin' TP, which made for an awkward ride home on the train.
Oh yeah, they also have a 20 dollar minimum charge for credit/debit cards so be forewarned. But they do have an ATM machine there, so no need to wander out. -

This is by far my favorite bar in Philly, because of their amazing beer selection. Not to be cocky or anything, but I definitely know my beer, and this place has at least seven beers I've never had before at any given time. Their total selections number forty beers, nearly all of which are sweet sweet craft brews. Delicious.
They have happy hour seven days a week, too. You absolutely cannot get better than that. I love the bartenders and have found myself conversing with them every time I enter the bar. Their food is the typical greasy fried crap, but they have some pretty awesome fried ravioli. Also, Jameson shots are on happy hour. How many times can I say awesome? Good jukebox, too. I love thee, Irish Pol!Listed in: Prost!, Where to Stroll When You're On…

This space has been so many different places over the past 10 years, it's a bit ridiculous.
i think they might have gotten it right this time--friendly staff, and nice space. There's a large beer section if you like this kinda thing (which I don't care about) but they've got lots of good specials here and a really good jukebox.
They also hooked up the Young Variety club for a happy hour here so they like their charity. -

Where can a bitch get a milk stout in the middle of August? At last, my question has been answered!
After being here for only a few minutes, I could tell I was in love. It is a divey bar in a nicer part of the city, a combination that I adore. I think the most notable aspect was the unusual lack of the bridge and... bridge crowd, especially in this neighborhood.
The number of taps (40) is impressive, although far from the most I've seen. And only a few of the offerings are crap, yay! Also, they have happy hour specials every night of the week, even Friday and Saturday. -
Review from Rachel U.
I doth write this review with the disclaimer that I'm not really a beer drinker. Hence, while they had a very impressive wall of beers that my beer drinking friends raved about, I'm reviewing two things.
One was my ability to get a non-beer drink without disparaging leers from the bartender, and for a reasonable price. Second was the discovery that they have an awesome upstairs space that we were given to hold our book club. A couple comfy couches pulled together around some little tables, and we had our biggest book club meeting to date... though I somehow suspect that had more to do with the wall of beer...Listed in: Where to find a yelping book…

Review from Mikey I.
This might seem like any other dive bar, and in actuality it pretty much is. However, to the beer drinker this place is as good as it gets. They have an insane amount of drafts available -- I don't even know where to begin.
It's pretty good for a week night, or early on the weekends. There isn't much seating downstairs so you're likely to find yourself standing.
There's an upstairs portion which has some cushy couches in the back, another bar and an open area which some take advantage of for getting their dance on.
Also, as much as I would recommend this place for the beer lover - I would surely dissuade the food lover. I'm honestly surprised they even have food, though in order to uphold the smoking ban - I suppose they need to have it. And by it, I mean whatever formerly frozen junk they feel like deep-frying. -
Review from Aly M.

I went to this bar recently for what I thought was the first time. I got there and realized I had been there when it was Jager's but was in no real condition to check the place out during my last visit.
This is a very chill bar, basically a dive by center city guidelines. They have a great beer selection and the bartenders I've met so far were both very cool and also more than willing to explain to me what a bunch of random beers taste like. Last night we missed Motown Happy Hour with Missy by hours but when we mentioned it she put more motown on for us, which was awesome.
$3 will get you a PBR or the much tastier Odd Notion and everything else is about $5 which I think is well worth it if you want to taste a couple (or bunch) of the other drafts.
I've also heard their food is great but have yet to try it.
It's a pretty small place without a ton of seating so probably not great for a crowd unless you're down with standing, but I went with 3 other people and sat at the bar without a problem although it did get more crowded as it got later.
They have a jukebox but the bartenders were playing their ipods on all my visits. Which so far has been preferable since I don't have to spend money on the jukebox or be subjected to other patrons' taste in music. -

Wow. What looks like a hole in the wall bar yields an unpretentious, true to itself bar. Walking by, one might judge a book by it's cover, and feel that this place isn't for them. But once inside, you will find bartenders who know their craft, and a wide selection of delicious, fresh beers.
If you are a beer fan... this is the place in Old Town for you. Do check out the bartenders recommendations for beers, they haven't been wrong yet. -
Review from Christopher S.
Swarthmore, PA
If you're in old city and want good beer, this is your best option. With the most taps in the city (40) and a few bottled options, you can find a drink for those who know little and those who know next to everything about beer.
The Irish Pol has a small menu (all fried foods) with reasonable prices. I personally enjoy the fried raviolis and their cheese fries most.
Downstairs seating is limited but they offer a second floor area for lounging around or even working on your latest dance moves. Lighting is generally dim but not too dark. The music is generally kept at a volume where you can have good conversation and still enjoy it. There is an electronic jukebox available as well.
The staff is comprised of a great bunch of people. They're very friendly, good for a laugh and they know a good amount about their beers.
Overall, if you're in old city and want to avoid a cover charge, popped collars, house/techno music, and you enjoy finer beers, this should be the only bar on your list. -

OK...where can I start...My favorite bar in Philadelphia...So what if I've only been to a couple. This place rocked..Great beer selection, great service, great customers. We saw it as we walked by & headed in. The beer was great & some guys at the bar gave us some authentic Philly pretzels.
I tried a local beer & then had the great stand-by ~ Rogue Dead Guy...Any place that pours Rogue from the other side of the country cannot be too bad.
The bartender was extremely knowledgeably & extremely friendly. I will definitely hit this pub if I'm ever in downtown Philadelphia. -

This is the first place we hit during out trip to Philly.
The people (bartender and patrons,) were incredibly friendly--one even offered us each a huge pretzel. Said something about how we can't visit Philly without having a pretzel...
They had Rogue Dead Guy on tap, so I was right at home as far as beer went.
Definitely recommend stopping by for a beer or two or three if you're in the area. -

I've seen a sign outside The Irish Pol claiming to have the most taps in the city. Skeptically, I entered and was pleasantly surprised by a wall of draft choices. After staring overwhelmingly at the taps for a while, the bartender sympathetically helped me narrow down my choices. Good beer, lots of choices, unpretentious. A good bar to stop at to have one good beer before heading to the next establishment.
Food selection is borderline horrifying. Fried raviolis? I think I'll pass.Listed in: All Things Old and City-like, Drink Drank Drunk

I'm surprised it took me so long to review this place...
The Irish Pol is my default destination when I decide I feel like just grabbing a beer. As everyone here has said, they have 40 taps, most of which are microbrews, and the selection is constantly changing. I'm not sure if this is official policy, but in my experience everything not marked with a triangle is $5, $3 during happy hours.
Other points: the bartenders are cool, the crowd is surprisingly eclectic, and the March Madness of beers is an awesome idea. (the winners of each matchup are on special for the rest of the night) I also have to say that I was a huge fan of the "No Michael Jackson Songs Here" sign they put up last summer.
In short, if you're in the mood to "just grab a beer", hit up the Irish Pol.
