Post re-model this place deserves some credit for trying. An updated motel is the best description. To be fair, if you're looking at this place, it's the price point that drew you (and it's good, at about $90/night). What you're hoping for is that nothing will deter you. Credit to the owners for updating the furniture with the only failing being it doesn't all quite fit in the room right (I had a queen/queen).

So here's the lowdown: Yeah, it's close to the Amtrak line and if your windows are open, you will hear trains consistently (as that runs right through Jack London Square).

The doors open up onto the main courtyard (not a hallway). The place is older and has that smell that most older buildings do (but air conditioning units seem to render it inert). Being older it shows signs of age but the facilities are kept very clean. They apparently do what they can to maintain the premises. Yes, they have FREE WiFi.

Location-wise, it's only five blocks from Chinatown and two blocks from Jack London Square and the marina (look it up for a list of shops). The freeway is only two blocks away. It also means it's sandwiched between the two places in a relatively quiet neighborhood without a lot of traffic. Ample FREE parking for guests was very useful for my five-day stay.

It's a one-person front desk staffed by someone that always smiled and said hello and goodbye when I passed. Housekeeping was very attentive.

I originally tagged it as a no-frllls place to stay while I tended to a family emergency nearby, not expecting to be there much. I'm happy that it matched my expectations and wouldn't mind staying there again.

We check in on the weekday and the guy is so nice that he update our room to deluxe King size room for free. The room is not too bad, but the bed sheet is a little bit dirty.
I feel pretty safe at night time because there is a security guard stay in the lobby.

even though it is close by the amtrak station, the noise is not too loud.

The pictures on the website of the updated rooms are pretty accurate. The new upgrades are nice, and the room we had was quite clean. A major PLUS is that there is free wi-fi!! Having a flat screen Philips t.v. was pretty awesome too... although it was a bit annoying that everytime you turned on the tv the default volume was super loud.

The carpet is brand new, and I wasn't afraid to walk barefoot on it haha. The sink and fixtures were new, fresh paint everywhere... bathroom shower was high-powered, but noisy.

I also liked that there was an ironing board and iron... as well as a built in hair-dryer. Nice one-cup coffee maker.

The price for the location is good, just a couple of blocks from Jack London Square. The inner hallways of the place still look retro, but the rooms definitely make up for it. There are three different staircases to go up to the rooms (one through the office and two through the garage) as well as a old elevator. The elevator was kind of creepy... and one of the staircases is near the garbage bin. yak.

However, there is free parking for the guests, and they have room-service (Buttercup Grill).

A VERY GOOD HOTEL NEAR JACK LONDON SQUARE
Good clean room with a fine view of Heron's nesting in the trees.
An exceptional value within two blocks of the waterfront.

I lived here when our house in oakland flooded and was deemed uninhabitable. Thanks to renter's insurance, it was all paid for. The hotel was really good about working with our insurance for payment.
Our room was clean, had internet access, and it was nice they had a pool (even tho it was january), bonus that it's three blocks from the ferry and only a few more to bart. We found the commute easy and i'm pretty sure they had a bart shuttle, tho they may have done away with that.
They also allow dogs here.
My dad stayed here before this and his car was broken into, though they didn't have a chance to steal anything since the car had TWO alarms on it  (just smashed the back window), the hotel paid for it. Kinda to be expected in downtown Oakland. Still, we felt pretty safe while we stayed there...though I wouldn't hang around too much at night!

The location is GREAT - in between the water and minutes away from downtown and the BART station. I really dig it. It is very clean and the beds are really comfortable. I'm still here and I expect it to keep getting better!

We stayed here two nights and were very pleased with everything.  Coming early on the train, we asked if we could check in before the usual time of 2 p.m.  The room was ready so they said yes.  The desk even called to ask if the room had been prepared okay and if everything was fine (it was).  The room faced the courtyard with a great pool (didn't bring our swimsuits - bummer) and wonderful lounge chairs and patio tables with nice fluffy towels for pool users.  The room was spacious, clean, typical of a fair-priced hotel and we were very happy with everything.
The Buttercup Grill and Bar next door serves a great breakfast (didn't try any other meals there) and is a popular place with the locals.
The location is great for walking to the Amtrak station and Jack London Square attractions and also to Chinatown (try Gum Kuo restaurant in the entrance to the courtyard on 9th between Franklin and Webster for a real ethnic experience at a great price), and you can walk to the BART and the Museum of California too.  Ferry to San Francisco leaves from Jack London Square.
We would definitely stay here again.

It was an interesting place. Staff was really nice - they let me use their office computer to print something out, which is cool. It's like a motel from the 70's off of a Southwestern highway.  But, it's in the middle of Oakland. Notably, there were herons galore chilling by the pool. The place tried to give itself a makeover, but it was superficial. I was embarassed for my friends to visit me here frankly. My bed was comfy I will say. And, the free breakfast (not continental) is a plus. It would take a lot of money and renovating to move up a star, which might not be worth their while.

I ended staying here during the torture-a-thon better known as the California bar.  The hotel itself is no different then any other Best Western, however the surly and exceedingly slow service likely elevates this place into the pantheon of shitty hotels.  Be sure to give yourself a couple hours to check in and out of here.

I found the rooms to be comfortable and the upgraded rooms have private balconies overlooking the courtyard and pool. Free Oakland tribune at your door. No refrig. or micros in the rooms here, but that is because they want you to eat at the Best Western Buttercup onsite restaurant which by the way, has been closed both times I have been there.  Nice stay, otherwise.  It's walking distance to Jack London Square and nice restaurants on Embarcdero St.  There's a Nation's across the street for a great but SLOWWWWW service hamburger.   For whatever reason, this hotel is not affliated with Best Western anymore.  Only 3 stars for not having micros in the rooms and their restaurant being closed on holidays.

I think this place used to be a best western, but they changed hands.  When I stayed there in September 2007, they told me they just changed hands about a week or so.  wow!
This place has a really nice courtyard, the place is rather clean, it has a nice decor and I think the rooms have been a bit remodeled.  It was pretty nice looking.
The price for a regular room was around $100/night.
There is plenty of parking for the place and the Buttercup Kitchen Family Restaurant is right in the same lot, so it convenient and a nice place to eat at.
Really nice courtyard, big pool.  some chairs in the room were sunken in, but clean place.
The only really bad things were that they seem to be understaffed, its near Jack London Square right next to the train so its loud at night, and even worse is there are doing construction right now so its loud with that too.  And twice I went to take a shower and the water was always cold.  Not that many amenities to the room.
Otherwise, a nice place to stay at.

This property is going through a major renovation and looks GREAT! The staff is very friendly. No matter where you go anyone could always find things that could be better. They are still in the process of renovating which will then allow them slighlty increase their prices therefore filtering out any riff raff. overall nice property with SUPER FRIENDLY STAFF.
