10 reviews for The Hotel of South Beach
Total cool points for snagging us the last room in the hotel (and perhaps all of SOBE) when we got stranded here thanks to a cancelled flight. NYE out by the airport wouldn't have rocked at all. Being right here at collins and 8th was party central (sorta).
wasn't our first time staying here - and the place hasn't aged well. What was once cool and funky 4 years back is now that "ridden hard and put away wet" kinda look.
And not sure if it was the holiday week, our goofy mood, or the clientele, but dammit if this hotel didn't feel like a cruise ship....long, narrow halways - thin, tinny walls - a rooftop pool that felt like it should be called the Lido Deck - and I may have spotted Charo.
but you can't beat the location, and the staff from front desk to rooftop amenities well all friendly (which isn't always a guarantee in these parts)
Discount travelers beware, they will stick you in the basement across from housekeeping. I booked months in advance and that's what I got. No view and next to the kitchen noise from the restaurant inside. The room decor must have been nice when it was new but now is very tired looking full of stains and discoloring. One of the decor details became one guests ashtray since there were cigarette butts and ashes inside despite it being a non smoking room. The bathroom is very cute and uniquely designed with stainless steel, mirrors and colored tiles. Nice shower. Location is very good but somewhat inconvenient to the convention center. To their credit, the staff, especially the bell hops are great. Lovely pool with a view on the roof, but everyone is on display in the small space.
This 40 room hotel on 8th and Collins in South Beach is the epitome of boutique. The staff is truly accommodating and they work hard to make sure you are happy. James, the front desk guy, upgraded our room so we can have more space. The rooms are clean, sparsely decorated with cool, art deco furniture, and the rain shower is heavenly after a day at the pool.
On Saturday, we didn't even leave the hotel until 1am when we decided to have a few drinks at Skybar. The Hotel has a roof top pool where they serve the best Mojitos. Do not drink these on an empty stomach or you'll be knocked out in 15 minutes. We also indulged in massages given in the cabanas. Ask for Bob. His technique is magic. There is also a separate cozy bar on the roof top called Spire that has a gorgeous view of the beach and surrounding street scape.
We also ate dinner at Wish, the hotel restaurant. The chef blends French, Asian, and Mediterranean flavors into delicious, exotic dishes. I plan to return to this property again for a relaxing, indulgent escape from Atlanta.
The staff here are really, really wonderful and do their best to accomodate your last-minute reservations/frivolous extra-towel requests/after hours boozing at the porch bar. Our room was gorgeous, with free snacks, wifi and a lovely beach view.
The downstairs restaurant is great for drinks, but our waitress at brunch was a little forgetful/surly. I was not terribly blown away by the food, which was more standard hotel fare than you'd expect from a Miami beach hotel. The hotel pool is a real gem, set on the roof with a gorgeous view of the water. The frozen mojitos are a revelation.
However: around 1 PM, they inexplicably start blasting the worst techno music imaginable. I wanted to relax with my book and my iPod, but it was like 1992 at a gay club in Akron. We asked a server if he could turn it down a little, and he said he'd do his best, but that he wasn't in charge of the playlist or its volume. Dear Whoever IS in charge of the music: all of your patrons were just trying to chill and get a tan; please stop demanding that we "c-c-c-come on ride the train."
Sure, it's a cute little boutique hotel with a cool restaurant and a nice bar on the roof. My wife and I stayed here while we were in transit to the islands (both on the way out and back).
But it is soooo loud. It rivals staying in a hostel. There are 2" gaps under the doors, and with wood floors in the hallway you really do hear everything. When the revelers get off the elevator at 2am, you hear everything. So unless you passed out, you'll probably wake up.
Not as great as I expected, but a comfy & cozy home base in SoBe.
The good: Awesome location on 8th & Collins, two blocks from the beach, walking distance from all the clubs & restaurants in SoBe. The chairs on the beach are great, as is having a beach towel provided.
The bad: the noise! The windows did a good job of insulating from Collins, but there was a 1 inch gap under the door. This meant we heard EVERYTHING from the hall, including all the elevator conversations.
Room Service wasn't really together--I called front desk, and got transferred to the pool bar, which said they didn't do room service. My boyfriend was more persistent and got transferred a third time to the actual restaurant. And they are strict about only serving breakfast til 11:30 AM.
We loved the location facing Collins--we had a cozy window seat where we could sit & watch the human scene go by, and our window even opened a few inches.
WORST hotel experience EVER. All due to one factor----there is ZERO sound insulation between rooms and the worst, old, creaky floors. Think the most rundown NYC tenament apartment ever--times ten. It sounded like an elephant stampede when my upstairs neighbor merely walked and paced about. It's too bad the rooms are cute and the staff really nice, but they need to invest some money in making this into a real hotel before they should expect people to pay $200/night. Sleeping in the street would be about as peaceful.
Funky feels-like-a-regular-hotel feel
One of the first places I've ever stayed on SoBe trips and its great. Great rooftop pool with great breakfast from the restaurant. Great beach chairs and towel service right on South Beach a block away from the hotel. You can take some take-out from WIsh at the Hotel or News Cafe a block away to the beach. There is absolutely no view in any room, but as if you are getting a view. Now, the sssshhhhh best secret is that the penthouse is the best room, and not outrageously priced. Great if you are with a group of friends to have a couple stay in the PH, makes for very fun-pre-going out-after-going out fun...Great SoBe Boutique hotel.
The best hotel OVERALL in the area of 8th & Ocean. You cannot beat the rooftop pool with any other nearby--certainly the hotel's brightest plus! The view from the rooftop is awesome and the food and drinks are quality...though sometimes you have to approach the almost "shy" seeming staff to get them ordered. The beautiful pool can at times run very warm (almost like a hot tub) so if you find this mention it to the staff--we did and the temperature was back to what you'd expect the next day. The rooms themselves are "decent", everything's clean and works and there's a good selection of channels on cable to keep you entertained should it be raining...a good free internet connection here too. The beds could be improved upon...you'll be hanging off the end of the bed should you be over 6 feet tall, but they are cosy. WISH is always a great experience, one of the best dinners on the Beach! If there's just two of you ask to be seated around the fountain. Biggest minus? For us, it was just how small the rooms run here...a bit of South Beach we can never get over...the bathrooms are a little bit more roomy than an airplane's...they are nice, but I'm a guy and I realize there's no room for a girl to get ready in there. Small minuses: the elevator can be very slow--expect to wait a few minutes quite often even though there's just four floors. SKIP SKIP SKIP the penthouse unit...especailly Wednesday through Saturday nights!!! The penthouse is located right between the Spire Bar (a beautiful must visit at night intimate rooftop bar!) and the elevator and if you're an early-to-bed type you're going to be very annoyed by the noise...and suprised (and scared?) at how many people try the door! The unit itself really isn't that much bigger than any of the other rooms in the house...maybe an extra 35 square feet? Of course, what hotel on SOBE doesn't have valet problems? With this hotel however we've had problems more than once (which you can't really blame on the hotel)...so definetly call ahead and ASK FOR THE FRONT DESK to call your room when the car is finally PARKED OUT FRONT...one early weekday afternoon it took over 45 minutes--YIKES! The front desk staff have ALWAYS been friendly and helpful in every one of our visits, and Juan Pierre is a very friendly part of the lobby staff so keep your eye out for him! OVERALL again, The Hotel of South Beach is the best there is on the immediate South Beach area--steps away from great Lincoln Road shopping and a block away from all the Ocean Drive action. Best kept kinda secret: there's a shower next to the gym, just off the pool (looks like it'd just be a closet)...VERY useful if you have a late flight and find yourself in need of a quick shower after laying out at the pool after already being checked out of your room.
