Just reviewing the restaurant, not the hotel.

It's average at best. It appears they are resting on their reputation and not doing anything to make the restaurant stand out. Bland, boring menu, with iffy service.

The atmosphere was nice though.

After taking a 7 1/2 hour Tryke ride, with rain, sun & wind condtions, we were ready to check into our room at the HISTORIC Holbrooke Hotel. Reservations had been made for a Queen room @ $135. Upon checking in, we were notified that the room was above the bar & it may be noisy until @ 11:00pm., but there was another room available, the Bridal Suite for @ $195.00. We were shown the queen room which was across from the noisy elevator, small & SMELLED BAD. We were then shown the Bridal Suite which had a large sitting area & an outside balcony. Great!
Went to use the bathroom & noticed the once white, tiled floor looked dark in some areas. I thought just age, no it was dirty, the floor hadn't been mopped. I took a wash cloth and cleaned a small section, then covered the floor with bath towels as not to have to walk on the dirty floor. Went to wash my hands and the water would not turn off. Called front desk, after some time we were told the maintanence person would not be coming and I should just bend down & turn it off at the valve. Next the light in the sleeping area was not working and again, no one to repair it. These were the MINOR annoyances. We were advised of the Bar noise but no one told us about the noise that was right outside our balcony from the club across the street. I believe they were doing Karaoke with extremely loud laughter until 3:30am. We would have been better off with the elevator noise and the smelly room. The only good thing is that the clerk who checked us in was friendly. I wrote a letter expressing my displeasure and they didn't even acknowledge it.  NO STARS DON'T STAY HERE!

Built in 1851 & listed as California Registered Historical Landmark #914, this hotel restaurant & bar is located in the heart of downtown Grass Valley. According to the website, Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield and Grover Cleveland stayed there, as well as other famous guests including writers Mark Twain and Bret Harte, heavyweight champion boxers Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons, the infamous highway man, Black Bart, and entertainers Lola Montez, Lotta Crabtree and Emma Nevada. The bar on the first floor is a nice, quiet place to meet friends for a drink---food isn't too bad either. I like the parlor area just outside the bar where they had cushy sofas and you could still get table service.
