The Hive is a great salon. I moved from NY 3 months and was worried about finding a reasonably priced salon in my area that does a fantastic job.
Lissa and her brother opened The Hive a little over a year ago, and focus not only on the hair itself but the experience (this includes the products they use, the music, and the friendly staff). The space itself is not huge, but has great interior and design. They also created a shopping wall where you can buy everything from perfume and jewelery and honey...all from local designers.
Lissa does my cut and color, and is so skilled. She used to work at Rudy's and opened up her own shop since she was in such demand. She's very accommodating and really works with you to get the perfect cut and color.
I would recommend this place is a heartbeat!
Yay! I am so glad I finally took my friend's advice and went to The Hive. I've been in LA for 8 months now (having moved from NY) and every time I've needed a bangs trim, I've held my breath and picked a salon at random. (Well, not totally random. Usually based on Yelp reviews, actually.) The results have always been "meh". I mean...no one ever effed up my hair, but then, no one ever did a terribly sophisticated job either.
Enter Jeremy Clark. He trimmed my bangs for me and it was just like my NY guy would have done. Nay, better! And I can't believe I am saying that. I have a pretty specific idea about how I want my hair (most importantly BANGS) to look and he just got it. He had real technique and took his time and really has such artistry. I am stoked! Now I kind of want to cut my hair...
I know where I'll be going if I do!
Got a bang trim here and I luvz them.
next to Lark cake shop. load up on the sugarz after.
After voicing my disappointment to the owner/manager I was very impressed with his customer service. I think the Hive deserves another star just for his willingness to improve the situation.

Unless you have straight easy to manage hair, not worth the risk or your time.

Over all experience was great. I had a 4:30pm appointment and I was called to the chair at exactly 4:30pm. The receptionist greeted me in a very friendly manner and offered me a beverage. My stylist Isadora was great and very friendly. I was very pleased with my haircut.
Having said that, the only reason I went to The Hive was because I was new the neighborhood and I was flying out for vacation the next day. I had no time to research a place to get a hair cut nor prices. I'm a simple guy. All I asked my stylist Isadora to do was to clean up the sides and leave the top a little long. I've been getting the same hair cut for over 4 years and never paid more than 25 bucks for it (and that is including tip). My simple haircut ran $38 dollars at The Hive (not including a tip of $7 that brought my total to $45!). So until I decide to get a cooler more complicated haircut, I plan to avoid going back to The Hive. But I do HIGHLY recommend it to those of you who have a little more style than I. Simple Joe's who get simple haircuts should not shell out $45 for a cut.
We got our haircut today by Lori and Sal, who were both very friendly, took their time and gave us great cuts. Cute atmosphere with good music and very professional. Even better service and cuts than Ive had at upscale beverly hills salons, and with mentioning their yelp special it was only 19 dollars a cut, can you say deal of the year!?
I'm not really jazzed about the Hive or the haircut I received from Sol, which was a 1.5 star cut (uneven), but gasped in greater horror when the salon staff categorized my short hair as "long" and charged moi for a long cut. They get "0" stars for ethics/customer service based on that so their average is closer to a single star ('cause they don't have negative stars here :().
My hair doesn't even touch my shoulders, so I am guessing they think I live on the planet DUPE. The price was a complete rip off. I am sure I came off as super friendly and a positive person, which I am, so maybe they thought I was also an idiot?
Just left the salon and, although the people are pleasant enough, and I really liked Sol, I will NEVER go back. Their prices would be super reasonable if they followed their own pricing guidelines for hair length. Cheating people to make a buck borders on evil, doncha think? They can just kiss my Yelp!
My five star rating goes to Lissa, shop owner. I haven't had my hair cut by anyone else in the salon but I definitely trust Lissa's judgment on hiring stylists.
I first started getting my hair cut by Lissa when she was at Rudy's Barbershop on Melrose. Things have gotten a bit pricier now that she's opened her own doors but she was still worth me tracking down after being away for a year.
With my last hair cut I told her I wanted to grow out and she did an awesome cut that is letting all of my layers grow out nicely. She does great short hair too.
The Hive LA is also hosting monthly art shows turn the salon into a showcase, sounds super fun, but I haven't been to one yet.
The Hive is great.... I live in the neighborhood and walked by it several times and when I needed a haircut I searched for reviews here and saw some positive feedback... well... thank you yelp! Lissa did a great job cutting my hair... and I will definitely be back.
I did see some negative reviews here regarding Hive being too expensive... and I have to disagree. The haircut was very reasonably priced... in fact it is rather cheap for such good quality... If you need a good groomin'... go to Hive!
I got my haircut at The Hive today and I love it!
I have always had short hair so I am super picky because it requires a lot of maintenance. So that means frequent visits to the salon. And that means $$$.
The list of the service prices are at the front desk so there are no hidden, secret costs. A short cut is $38. How can you beat that? I have paid a lot more for a mediocre hair cut.
Lori was my stylist. Super nice and easy to talk to. I did not feel intimidated or feel like I didn't have a say in my hair style. She gave me a great pixie cut.
In my opinion, this definitely deserves 5 stars. Great service, great prices, friendly atmosphere.
I was one of the lucky ones who just by chance got a haircut from Lissa when she was working at Rudy's on Melrose (over 2 years ago). I have been going to her ever since and have never been disappointed.
It is wonderful that she has opened her own place. My most recent cut was from one of her associates Liz Kent who was also excellent. Lissa is definitely in demand, so it is difficult to get a same-day appointment with her. My experience with Liz was great, and I would also recommend her without hesitation.
The Hive is a great spot.
i loved my haircut here. it grew out awesome, so the pleasure kept going. i feel spoiled and classy when i come in here, but i don't feel snooty. this place costs more when compared to a barbershop but is really reasonable for a salon. i got my haircut from liz, and she is really sweet and gentle and warm.
parking sucks.
ladies i don't know what your options are, but if you are an eastside dude and you were about to go to rudy's or shorty's-which are fine establishments, don't get me wrong-come here instead. it probably only costs a little bit more, and it's smaller and you'll get tlc and just have a relaxing nice time, and get a good haircut. i don't like the factory conveyor belt vibe of rudy's.
ooh, and the shampoo smells hella good. natural, not perfumey.
PS: this used to be a sexy latino salon with cute gay boys. they are still around! but they moved around the corner. now it's more white people (don't be racist). you can still see cute boys here. there is one right behind the counter!
Been in LA for over 2 years and this is the first haircut that I'm truly happy with. Got my haircut by Jeremy Clark who is by far the most skilled stylist/barber I've ever been to. He really listens to what you want and collaborates with you in a way I've never experienced before.
Had such bad experiences going to Rudy's that I've resorted to cutting my own hair for the past 6 months (with mixed results) because I was so sick of getting crappy haircuts. I find that even if you explain exactly what you want, most stylists don't have the technical ability to actually execute it... Jeremy does.
Will definitely be back. Highly recommend.
Lovely! Just got my hair done by one of their freelance hair guys, Jeremy Clark, and he's wonderful. Did SUCH a great job with my hair, and so nice! Love the vibe and overall feel of the place- great attitude, and they have some gallery space showing off rotating art work.
Definitely recommend!
After so many years of slipshod haircuts, I finally got a real hair*style* that I was happy with from none other than Lissa. She's badass. Stepping up from basic barbershops to a real hair stylist totally makes a difference; and it didn't break the bank either! I'm stoked.
The service is great. I was offered a magazine and a glass of water while I waited. And there's art for sale on the wall! badass. I really like how THE HIVE is about the entire experience, not just a great cut.
I only wish they had one up in NorCal!
Love my haircut.
Would totally recommend to friends.
Also, their prices are better than most of the salons in the area, which is a total plus.
After my hair being butchered so many times, a girlifriend recommended id go see Lissa, after the first time i went to her i knew i could trust her-
so glad to see shes has finally opened her own salon! just got my haircut there a few days ago and its totally KILLER! i love it and so does everyone else! the atmosphere is so mellow and fun! great vibes! this girl truly knows what she is doing and can create a masterpiece with any type of situation you hand over to her! as i am typing this the UPS guy just walked in and told me how great my hair looked.. thanks Lissa!
Ok, let me first say that the haircuts I saw in the 5+ hours(!) I was there were darling. I had a less than satisfying hair color experience with Isadora, and when I called to speak with Lissa (the owner) less than two weeks later because my hair had morphed to a horrible reddish brown (with green on the ends!!), I was offered a "fix it" appointment. When I explained that I was not interested in that, I was told in a very clipped tone that I waited too long and there would be no negotiation or even partial refund. Then she practically hung up on me, because "...I have clients waiting" Outrageous! As the owner, I feel Lissa should have tried harder to resolve this problem. I was treated, instead, like "that lady" that makes crazy demands and can't be dealt with reasonably. (When I worked in customer service years ago, I heard it all, believe me.) Now, I agree I should have gone right back to The Hive the day (or two) after my hair coloring debacle, but I was concerned that any more fixing/processing would just make it worse! I told Isadora on the day of my appt. that my hair really grabs red, and to watch out for that, because i wanted a nice light to med. brown but alas... It was NEVER what I wanted, but could I live with it? I thought maybe I could until it started washing out to the aforementioned GREEN color! This was not a good experience overall, for the time it took alone (as I mentioned, I was there for 5 hours!). Isadora seems like a great hair cutter, I liked what I saw of her other clients, but color, not so much.
Lissa finally opened her own place! I have been going to get my hair cut by Lissa for about 2 years now...and this year, she had to go ahead and get super-famous. It became impossible to try and get her to cut my hair over at Rudy's because of their "we don't make appointments, you can be put on a list" policy.
No longer! The other day, I was perusing Yelp for salons and stumbled upon The Hive purely by accident. I was so excited that I made an appointment for yesterday (Saturday). (Side note: A couple of days after I made the appointment, Chris, Lissa's brother and business partner, messaged me on Yelp and asked me if I found Lissa! He's on his game, that one.)
I show up for my appointment and Chris offers me something to drink--coffee, tea, wine (!!). The idea of drinking wine and getting my haircut largely appealed to me, but I had a cup of coffee instead as it was a bit early to start drinking. The space is bright, airy, and, well, spacious. Lissa welcomed me with open arms. We went through our usual song and dance--she consulted with me for a minute regarding what I wanted in my haircut, I loved what she suggested, and we got my hair washed. She's using a line of products now called Davines, a sustainable company which uses mostly natural ingredients. We chatted about all sorts of things while she whipped my mangled coif into shape. By the end of it, I had a new cupcake place (next door!), a new hair cut, new product, and a newfound respect for Lissa. She's just fantastic with what she does and I'd highly recommend her to anyone. Short, long, color, you name it, she can do it.
Jeremy at The Hive is a genius. Such, such a nice guy and he gave me the best highlights I have ever gotten, including when I used to pay big bucks to Warren-Tricomi in New York. His blowout was also something special -- I never have looked this good! In fact, Jeremy is so good that some little selfish part of me wants to keep him a secret, but I know that is WRONG!!! Absolutely my favorite cutter/colorer ever.
I have been fighting the masses for a while just to have Lissa cut my hair and now I am so glad that The Hive is open so I can make an appointment!!! The salon is beautiful and the haircuts are the BEST I have ever had. This is my number one spot. How much do i love The Hive? I drive from Woodland Hills just for a cut!!
