Review Highlights
Appropriately named considering it's a bit hard to find, the hideout is a little gem close to malibu that seems to cater to Pepperdine students. Since they can't drink on campus, this is a close enough a little spot to make it home in one piece.
I was here last night for a birthday party, and it was Karaoke night. Nothing like a bunch of Indian friend's singing Pink Floyd songs with Indian accents. Add another friend's horrible rendition of Journey's Separate ways and you realize why they make the drinks cheap. You really do need to drink a bit to make this manageable, unless your friends are good singers.
Just so were all clear, this used to be a gay bar called the SS Friendship. Im not gay but that's a killer name for a gay bar.
Anyways, the fact that the bouncer now has a card swiper must mean they realized their bar was haven for underage, rich kids from the palisades.
I only go there when a friend of mine is dj'ing/pushing buttons on his ipod, so i cant comment on a typical night at the hideout.
Drinks are reasonably priced for a bar in LA. The back patio is cool, if not a little small, and Im not sure anyone who works there ever goes out there, so you could get away with some shady stuff (not that I ever have.....)
I think the biggest problem is the parking, or lack of. Just a really bad location, right off of PCH. If you live in the neighborhood, this is a solid bar for you to frequent. But if you live in this neighborhood, you probably have way too much money to be going to this place.
I came here for a friend's birthday a few months back. It's seriously five minutes from the beach. You can also find parking just down the street for free.
First things first, there is no cover :) Also, the drinks aren't that expensive :) How ever, the music is not really great to me. They don't play any old school music, or recent tracks, or hip hop. Kind of more techno or music that's not that memorable, because all I know that I didn't really like the music.
It's a nice place to chill considering that there are some nice couches on the second floor. Would come here again? Maybe, but only if all of my friends were going.
I came here Saturday night with a few friends. It's a pretty cool spot in that it's pretty much across the street from the beach. I went mainly to tag along since a friend of a friend was having a party there.
The parking situation is not great. I didn't catch how much valet is, but we decided to first test out our luck on finding street parking even though it was already 11pm. Unless you or someone in your car is familiar with the area, or you have GPS, you might get lost while trying to find street parking. Luckily, I used my handy iPhone since some of these streets seem like they lead you in circles if you follow them. Fortunately, we ended up parking up Channel Road just a bit - half a mile max. A nice walk and away from any 5-0 that might be lurking waiting for you to pull out from the valet.
Anyhow, it was fairly crowded on Saturday. No cover! The crowd was mixed, but I'd say most were in their 20s. The booths on one side of the room and the area near the bar on the other were all busy. There seems to be a pseudo dance floor in between the booths and the bar, but that was mainly occupied by people standing around chatting. I wasn't really paying attention to the music, but there's a DJ on Saturdays.
It wasn't a difficult task to get a drink, but it was difficult to get in position to get a drink. Prices are not bad, all things considered. First round was on me - $21 ($5 bottled beer, $6 Guinness draft, $10 Jack + Coke). I cannot comment on the strength of the mixed drinks since I only had beer, but it seemed fine when I watched the bartender pour. Second round, was also on me haha - $33 (same + $12 Tokyo Tea).
There is a small outdoor patio area in the back where people were smoking. Also, there's a lounge-ish area on the second floor with couches. The music isn't quite as loud up here since all the speakers are downstairs, which was nice. It also had two small flat screen TVs with ESPN on, go figure. I'm not sure if the party officially reserved the upstairs area, but the only people up there seemed to be with the group.
Bottom line: No problems getting in, street parking a little difficult, average priced drinks, and no cover!
I went here for a friend's birthday recently. The place consists of downstairs housing the main bar, dance floor, a number of booths, and a cozy, outdoor smoking area. Upstairs you will find a small lounge area.
A few good things about this place:
1) No cover
2) Friendly bartenders
3) Decent drink prices
Some things that need work:
1) The valet service is HORRIBLE. The valets were rude, and upon returning my car I discovered they had scratched the front fender.
2) Downstairs you will find 1 small, unisex bathroom, and upstairs in the lounge area you will find a girl's bathroom. There are always girls in both bathrooms, which makes it difficult for a guy if you need to go. Also, the night I went, our friend had the upstairs lounge requested for reserved for his birthday. But since the upstairs bathroom is a women's bathroom, any women could walk up to use the restroom. This defeats the purpose of a private party.
So I am NOT a club person at all, but was pleasantly surprised by this place! Great music and dancing, but not pretentious at all... definitely fun for a girls night out!
Plus, cute and nice bartenders. :)
PS - don't even think about parking, nowhere to park. Must valet.
Typical bar. Gets pretty crowded on the weekend. Drinks are pricey and not that strong.

Take Big Blue Bus #9 or Metro #534.
Once again, another place wins my heart.
After going to different places for karaoke, I finally found myself here on a Thursday night. I'll limit myself to 5 good things:
1. free tacos on Thursdays...did I say free?
2. great karaoke with a short wait and people singing along
3. great service and good drinks
4. A fun group of people who like to dance during and between songs
5. a fun bar with seating and standing room, and a place you can settle in and just have fun
Reasons to go to this bar:
you live within walking distance
you know the bartender and get hooked up with free or at least discounted drinks
your awesome friends want to go, and in your experience, even an alley can be a hot party
Ok, there are so many bars in LA, don't make the trek.
Cons:
Small, upstairs was closed for a private party.
Hot, SOO hot. Tiny little dance floor, and the patio had heaters on! we went out to the front to a small little space to cool off.
I think the drinks were expensive, i don't know I didn't buy mine. I think they were over 10 for small ones, typical for lounges and such but for a small little bar, not worth it.
They gave the mic to some douche who had a role in some movie and just talked about how he's cool because he knows people in hollywood. And ok, fine whatever, that was his schtick, but come on, nobody laughed in the first 2 minutes, but 5 more minutes of this shit, just Shut the F UP! Total abuse of "power" I thought he would throw in some real jokes, but no. It seemed like the guys who gave him the mic were regretting it. Just sing happy b day to your friend and get off the stage. Not only was he not funny and had too much time, but he wasn't even hot. ugh.
pros:
the guys at the club were nice. Except one who wouldn't let us upstairs to use the bathroom so we had to wait for the one downstairs
the music was pretty good, a few songs lagged, but the DJ held his own.
the drink was tasty.
the ocean breeze cooled us down.
Oh and this place was packed with girls! And i think gay men, i heard there was some gay couple screwing in the bathroom. yea the same one I had to wait for because I wasn't allowed upstairs. hmm.
Oh and valet had one guy! poor guy! I didn't even want to look for parking, I had hot new heels on. I paid the 6.
it was okay. it was like most lounges imo. nothing extra to offer, nothing really bad either. i refuse to ever do valet! at 7:55 on a thursday i got street parking up on channel that was maybe a 7 minute walk in heels. i was very lucky i found a spot because every street spot was pretty much taken. if you drive far up channel, you will likely find a spot but arrive extra, extra early if you are meeting people and dont want to spend the extra cash for valet. i ordered a mojito and it was an average price for los angeles. it actually was pretty strong, so you got your moneys worth.
would i go here again? no but i dont like 99% of these bars/clubs/lounges whatever the hell you want to call them.
This is my secret spot. It's so secret, in fact, that unfortunately sometimes the secret doesn't get out to who I want it to get out to: hot girls. So here I am yelping it... c'mon hot girls (and guys with hot girls as friends), let's do this.
The Hideout has all the elements in place to make for an epic evening out: a nicely stocked bar complete with nearly every libation one can imagine, chill and friendly bartenders, a nice patio and upstairs area, a very short stumbling walk to the ocean, karaoke and half price drinks on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Read that again, people. In fact, you don't have to, I'll write it again: karaoke and half price drinks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Chicka yeah!
The k-dj is really good with a good song selection, the staff is awesome, and the patrons can be very fun and friendly, that is, when it's not empty.
Evenings here so far have been either ridiculous or ridiculously pathetic. There is no in-between. It's a perfect place to bring a few people and howl away at some songs and blurp your drunk, stumbling ass off to the ocean after closing and run around the sand for a bit of the good ole i-don't-know-what afterwards.
My morning-after-hideout moments come in only one of two flavors: the "good god I need to find a better place to go" or the "holy crap, how did all this sand get in my apartment?".
Check it out. It's a moral imperative. But until word gets out and more people show up regularly, bring the party with you. And bring hot girls. Tell them AJ says hi.
if the air conditioning actually worked, this place would be well on its way to 5-stars in my book!
i came here for a friend's birthday and it also happened to be 80s night. good thing our party had the whole upstairs lounge because the crowd was a little suspect... so yeah, good thing that we had the upstairs rented out, but a few not so good things, like there's no bar upstairs and no ladies' room downstairs. so we had quite a few teased, bangled and bedazzled girls in spandex crashing through our party to go throw up in the restroom.
the a/c wasn't properly functioning so it was beyond hot. and the bartress that was serving our drinks was on the clumsy side. my friend got one drink that was only 1/3 full by the time it got to him.
but the music was great, the space is visually appealing and best of all valet is only $5. i highly recommend valet not just because i'm lazy, but because parking is a nightmare because of its proximity to the beach.
Very nice place. Fun, and not too loud. Good Patio and the night I went it was 1/2 off well drinks. I'm not sure of the atmosphere on a weekend, but I like chill places you can actually talk and on Monday that is what you get. Great little place, and the parking was a breeze. Fun night with a good group of friends. I bet this would be a great place for a weeknight birthday party. And if you have one invite me! haha =]
This place has the potential to be a really cool hangout. Maybe I shouldn't have arrived at 9:30 PM on a Friday, maybe we shouldn't have had my aunt's old geezer of a boyfriend tagging along complaining about the music, which in my opinion was great...but there's no accounting for taste between a 30 year old and a 60 year old, is there?
My only complaint was the drinks...not so good, but maybe its what I ordered or the bartender just a penchant for putting pineapple juice in everything? I don't know, but either way, this place could be cool if I get there later, bring more suitable peeps and stay away from bartenders who pour pinapple juice!
This is a nice little cozy place to lounge out with friends. Not too big or too small just right. The atmosphere of this bar is decent, it has that archaic feeling when you first step in. It can probably be considered a hole in the wall, you can literally miss it if you are driving around.
The crowd is pretty mixed and on Friday nights it can get crowded. This place is small that you probably know half of the crowd by the end of the night. They do have a private lounge in case you want to rent it out for a small gathering upstairs. If you want a laid back, low key place, this is it.
This place was pretty cool. Had a very chill atmosphere. I had set up a get together with my friends and we all had a good time there.
Pros:
- No cover.
- Owner was super nice. Because I had at least 25 friends going, he hooked us up with a bottle of my choice of poison and reserved two couches for us.
- Music was good. I went on a Friday so it was house music.
- There is a outside patio with couches as well. it looks like a separate room but once you walk out there, you realize it's an outside patio with heaters. Some people bought cigars from the bar and went out there to chill and smoke.
- It wasn't crowded. My friends pretty much made up the party there, so it might have been kinda empty had we not had our party there. But it was perfect for my group of friends.
- There is one pool table upstairs in the loft.
Cons:
- Location. Way west. There's not much around there besides the beach.
- Hard to find parking if you go later, but there is $5 valet
this place is ok if you live in malibu and dont want to drive that far to be in a room with people in it. sometimes the music is ok but the speakers are on the ceiling and don't make you wanna dance. the crowd is boring west siders, the kind with jobs. but the staff is cool and they treat people well and it is free to get in and there isn't anything better in malibu ever. a cool place to meet for a drink...
Sometimes you need a little dancing in your life. And sometimes you need to do the dancing in your chucks. Heels are too exhausting (and painful). This place is super casual. I saw a guy in shorts.
I went with some friends on a Saturday night. No line, no dress code, no cover, no problem! I'm at the bar waiting to order my drink when I look over and see Cuba "Show Me the Money" Gooding Jr. He seemed cool but he left after about 20 minutes. My Long Island Iced Tea (in a little plastic cup, btw) was $10. I can understand if it was in a regular glass but it was in a little plastic cup! Strong, but still, come on, a little plastic cup!!
So my friends and I are sipping our drinks and watching people "dancing" on the dancefloor. There's this crazy older woman dressed like she just came from jazzercising and she's dancing CRAZY. She had a gold bra on! She was great and I was going to challenge her to a dance off but she left early. I hear those jazzercise classes start early in the morning.
The DJ wasn't very good in terms of DJ-ing skills, but the music was fun. I didn't stop dancing all night. I had a blast because I found 3 nice guys to dance with =).
This place rocks.
You'll love the decor because it looks like something out of the old west with all the wood behind the bar, nice setup. This is not for casual drinkers or tee-totalers, this is a bar through and through.... great bartenders keep the place flowing even when crowded.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays is karaoke and a fair amount of people show to have a good time. Middle age to younger crowd but you'll see all ages on any given night.
Lively, fun, and with an interesting group of people, if you are ever on PCH poke your head in and have a drink....
Karaoke at the Hideout on Tuesday nights from 9PM - 1AM with half-price beers makes this place the best karaoke dive bar in the Westside, hands down, if only for just one night a week. It is pretty far west, but on Tuesday nights there's plenty of parking everywhere.
The KJ said that no one is there for the first hour, so that would be a perfect time for you and your friends to perform "Holla Back Girl" and "Baby I Love Your Way," where you might get booed anywhere else. And if you're too cool to be seen in public with your friends, it's just as fun going by yourself. You can hang out at the bar and talk to the locals and the super-friendly bartender or listen to the singers and judge them silently.
When I went at around 11PM, the place was mostly empty. There were a some drunk people singing country and classic rock songs. And then later, a group of people showed up and did some ridiculously crazy dancing in the middle of the bar area that would crack every singer up. Somehow I ended up with the last song and I chose "Ain't Nothin' But a G Thang." The unfortunate combination of the bar closing up and my obscene rapping in a predominantly white bar drove everyone out. I always like to help ruin a good thing.
My first impression was negative 2 stars because of the bouncer. We were 4 cute Asian girls out celebrating a bachelorette party, so we each had on cute, little outfits with limited pockets and of course no purses. When we played the ID game with the bouncer, we had to pass IDs around because there was one person holding all IDs. The bouncer gave us sh** saying that "sharing IDs weren't going to fly here no matter how cute you are." Anyhow, that was onlly bouncer no-no #1.
The night started to improve because they had good drinks (1 star), but they lose one star because the bar tenders we not very fair in taking orders. When we first got there, the bar was hardly busy. The bartenders were three girls and one guy. With the three girl bartenders, men customers trumped women customers which was a little frustrating. So, in my opinion it took too long to get a drink even though the bar was so vacant. If you are going to get a drink, send up a guy from the group.
The place received another three stars for some amusing dancers. One guy came with his girlfriend who didn't seem to be much of the dancer, so he came over dancing with us. That was very good entertainment. He was out of control funny with his moves and the bachelorette had a blast. Then there were two other dancers who were just amusing to watch. One guy we called the yoga guy. He was there with all of these girl friends and it looked like he was teaching them a yoga class as they danced. And last but not least there was the guy dressed in drag. He had the tallest platforms on, double D sized breasts, bright red lipstick, pigtails, and some eye-catching, ridiculous dance moves.
Another 2 star are for good music. Although we had expected 80's on a Saturday night, the 80's was minimal. I was ok with that though because instead the dj played a mix of early 90's and current pop. The early 90's was a fresh of breath air even though we didn't get a lot of 80's.
As the evening progessed, the place got packed. The people who came give it another 1 star because they helped us celebrate the end of her bachelorette-hood. Without having to tell them, people came up to the bride-to-be with congratualtions and free drinks. It was wonderful.
The last star is for the air-conditioned upstairs lounge with free drinks I don't think this is the norm because a private party reserved the lounge and we randomly got invited to hang out up there, but if you are getting too hot in the dance area head upstairs if you can or step outside for a little bit.
Have fun. I hope you are as lucky as we were with finding street parking.
I was there on a sat, and the only reason I would drive that far from Hollywood was b/c my friend works right next door. My first impression was that this place was really small but it turns out it has a smoking patio (which was nice) and an upstairs lounge. I guess the upstairs was taken up by a party and it seems that there was some restriction on going up there.
On another note, the beers were averagely priced and they have a good selection. There is parking out in the street if you get there early enough. The crowd seemed like the typical club scene and anyone that didn't fit in that criteria stayed out in the patio and had their brew and a cig.
Good place to relax and to meet drunken people; however it is a ways off from anything else.
OK, so we staggered in here after enjoying the wine at Giorgio a bit too much. I remembered this place as a gay bar that had been around since the sixties. Apparently it's now a karaoke bar (on Tuesdays) that has been around since, like, 2006.
Honestly it was a really endearing spot with decent drinks, and since I was with the absolute best company in the world, so much the better. We sat at the bar and just watched. Mellow.
Schlepping it to the West Side is never on my list of things desirable to do. Which is part of why I can only manage three stars. Generosity got the better of me.
The Hideout is appropriately named at least. You might as well be on the Hut for Red October in attempting to find this bar. And My GOD is it impossible to park unless you valet. Being a NYer I loath paying for parking, so that is lame. LAME.
Its a pretty nicely set up place, but oh so small. Drinks are more expensive than they should be, and really not that good. I think my vodka 7 had more of anything other than vodka or 7.
Good music though.
I thought it was okay. I have been here a couple times and the crowd varies. At one point it was crowded and people were trying to dance but there is not really that much room. Fortunately, I knew the bartender from an acting class and he was giving everybody in the group I was with free drinks so i didn't buy anything here. However, I felt it was kind of a mess. They have an outdoor patio and the place has a claustrophobic feel. The music was too loud to talk and it was too dark to see what anyone looked like.
I had heard a lot of great things about the Hideout before I first came here. Perhaps my expectations were too high? Maybe it was an off night. It was a mixed crowd and the vibe was not so inviting. I gave it a good go. The place definitely has potential, it's a good size and it's also right by the beach which is always a plus.
This used to be a speakeasy way back in the day, and the interior hasn't changed much since then.
Not much to it, but I used to go here all the tiempo. But now I live too far. Good hangout for the Pepperdine kids though.
This used to be an old historic gay bar. Now, it's painted charcoal grey and I guess it's a club catering to the rustic canyon crowd. Not really sure why...Westside nightlife in general is pretty lame, and this is even more isolated from civilization. Decor is blah, bartenders are competent, and there's a little smoking patio out back with searing hot nuclear powered heat lamps. DJ quality (on both of my trips here), have been extremely poor, consisting of frat party / top 40 remix classics, popular among the clue/hope-less set.
Fun times had on Friday night. Really low key spot with a hip feel. Great martini's, friendly service, good music, no cover! I like it. The upstairs was closed for the evening, but I would be curious to check it out. The only thing that sucks is that there are not a lot of other places around, but all and all it is a cool spot!
Great DJ, friendly crowd of 30/40 somethings and just a great spot to hang out. It has a local feel to it and is on my list of great places.
I just hosted a bday party for my husband here with a couple of friends. What a great place. We were able to reserve the whole upstairs just for us, bring our own food and they didn't charge us a cent for entry or make us pay a BS bottle service charge. We had a great time. DJ, full bar, friendly & helpful staff. Niko rocks.
